Excerpt:Milton, then, was not merely a hired pen of the Republic but its principled supporter. He began his service believing in the possibility that, in the Commonwealth, he was helping to build God's kingdom on earth. Yet, over the course of his many years' unflinching service to the Republic and subsequently to Oliver Cromwell as its Lord Protector, Milton's optimism drained out of him slowly but surely like sap from an injured tree. In 1641, as Christopher Hill points out, Milton was full of millenarian hope and wrote of Christ's return in terms of a ‘shortly expected king'. * * *Support Warhorn here.Music is Rise Up, O Lord, a recording of Psalm 10 by My Soul Among Lions.

The Juno-winning Canadian jazz singer and pianist Laila Biali is back with a new album, “Wintersongs,” which was inspired by some time she spent in Banff. She says the album brings her back to her roots as a classical pianist — a path that was cut short after a car accident changed her life at 15. Laila sits down with Tom Power to talk about the record, how it blends different sides of herself, and a difficult new challenge she's facing in both her life and music.

His Dreams of Being a Doctor Dashed, He Found a New Calling Running a Physiotherapy Business: Jason T. Smith Jason T Smith thought he'd missed out on his calling to be a medical missionary, until he realized he'd been gifted a new one. Smith's vision for being a doctor helping heal those in underserved nations came crashing down when he didn't qualify to study medicine. So instead, he pursued physiotherapy, first as a backup plan, but then with a passion for not only restoring health, but for reimagining the field. He became founder and CEO of Australia's largest physiotherapy network, the Back in Motion Health Group. He never wanted a business, he says, yet ended up as a franchisor, with more than 140 of them supported by a team of more than 700 employees. But that isn't the final chapter of his life of significance. He sold the businesses for $100 million to focus full time on pursuits like his Iceberg Leadership Institute, where he's mentored more than 1000, others just like him. Hi friends, Penn here. As some of you know, I am obsessed with all things sci-fi. This traces way back to my childhood during the Star Wars and Star Trek days that sparked a lifelong fascination for all things space. It's the main reason that I always wanted to be an astronaut. Fast forward to today, you can see that life took me in a wildly different direction. (Plus I have terrible vertigo so I would have made a horrible astronaut.) Dashed childhood dreams aside, the impact these movies and shows had on me got us thinking. Turns out, the stuff we consume has a greater impact than you think. Walt Hickey wrote a fascinating book called You Are What You Watch: How Movies and TV Affect Everything that discusses just that. In it, Hickey dives into (among many other things) the power of entertainment, how it can have an actual physical effect on us, and how it can greatly shape who we are as individuals and as society. So we invited him on this week's podcast! Also bonus–after the interview, Kim and I test our 90's pop culture knowledge with our producer, Ann Marie. Heartbreak for Hockeytown. The Detroit Red Wings came so, so close to making the playoffs. Tune in as we start by lamenting the past few nights (0:00) before giving our thoughts on how the Red Wings just barely missed the playoffs due to the Philadelphia Flyers pulling the goalie against the Washington Capitals, and also give an overview of the final standings in the Eastern Conference Wild Card postseason race (6:05). We then cover Detroit's first dramatic win over the Montreal Canadiens, including J.T. Compher keeping them in it on another off night for Alex Lyon, Alex DeBrincat finally scoring from distance, Shayne Gostisbehere's insane leap to save the game, leading to Perron's great pass for Lucas Raymond's tying goal that set Detroit alight. Then, Lucas Raymond working with Dylan Larkin to finish the job, celebrating Patrick Kane style as Detroit's newest star saved the season again (15:00). After that, Lalonde's squad's next game against Montreal, including Reimer's highs and lows, Moritz Seider, Daniel Sprong. and Joe Veleno scoring, drama as David Perron scored a miraculous late goal and John Tortorella pulling the goalie still afterwards, Kane's shootout winner for naught, and feelings on how the barely missed playoffs played out (27:45). Next, we discuss Patrick Kane's comments and whether he's likely to be signed by Steve Yzerman for another stint with the Red Wings (51:00), and updates on Shai Buium, Simon Edvinsson, Sebastian Cossa, and the Grand Rapids Griffins (58:30).
