Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On Elitism in EA, published by James Lin on July 22, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction Elitism often gets a bad rap. Its role in EA is complicated, and though it sometimes leaves a bad taste in our mouth, we think that elitism is better understood in shades of gray rather than black and white. In this post, we'll look at when elitism can be useful in EA and when it can be detrimental. Hopefully, a more nuanced understanding of elitism and its benefits/drawbacks can lead to a more productive conversation around its place in community building. A closer look Elitism in EA usually manifests as a strong preference for hiring and funding people from top universities, companies, and other institutions where social power, competence, and wealth tend to concentrate. Although elitism can take many other forms, for our purposes, we'll be using this definition moving forward. We've categorized several traits in the following table by whether they'll be selected for during prestigious recruiting/hiring processes, or whether they'll be independent/selected against. Feel free to propose edits or other traits in the comments! We've found this table useful for thinking through situations when elitism may or may not be appropriate. Traits that elitism tends to select forTraits that elitism tends to select against (or neutral) - Ambition/desire for power - Problem-solving - Self-motivation and self-regulation - Academic/intellectual competence - Possession of social power - Access to resources - Altruism/desire to help others - Agency/agentic-ness - Critical thinking - Risk-taking/rebelliousness (e.g. choosing safer career options like finance, medicine, Big Tech) Pros of elitist selection 1. Talent Prestigious programs select for a baseline of traits EA generally looks for. Making something more elite in an academic context will draw in competent and ambitious talent. Given that impact is heavy-tailed, there are often several orders of magnitudes difference between the expected impact of median vs top percentile talent 2. Class and social selection Elite selection (e.g. at top universities) will often select for people who have a baseline of financial stability. EA careers aren't as stable as alternative career pathways for most people (e.g. teacher, doctor, researcher), and financial stability is an important prerequisite to getting more involved. It's far easier to consider earning to give if you're making $100k+ a year. Edit: It's challenging for students/workers from even middle-class families to give up several hours a week to preventing a far-off risk while struggling to pay off $50,000+ in student loans and support their families. Cons of elitist selection 1. Optics and Demotivation As EA becomes more mainstream, we should be careful with how EA's image grows. An elitist reputation may kneecap recruitment efforts and the movement's impact. Additionally, internal perceptions of EA may turn sour as conferences and organizations start being viewed as “only for the elite” vs. “open-to-all.” It can be incredibly demotivating being told that your potential for impact is far less than a select few. 2. Epistemics and Homogeneity Recruiting from the same 10-20 universities who all have similar demographics makes it more likely to end up engaging in groupthink. This is problematic since novel and creative solutions are in high demand. Lack of diversity is also already a problem that EA struggles with, and promotes a self-perpetuating cycle. 3. Altruism Prestige doesn't select for people who want to do the most good. This can be counteracted by recruitment processes that select more heavily for altruism and the self-selection effects of EA as a movement, but given the importance of strong value-alignment within EA, this is potentially damaging in the long-term. 4. Interview with P-VALLEY Creator and Cast, Katori Hall, Nicco Annan, Elarica Johnson, Brandee Evans, Shannon Thornton, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Parker Sawyers #PValley is a popular series about the lives of strippers and the other people in a fictional town (Chucalissa) in Mississippi. Uncle Clifford is the house mother that runs The Pynk, the club where much of the show initially takes place. While strippers Autumn, Keyshawn and Mercedes, as well as the bouncer Diamond, are central to the show, Clifford and his relationships - particularly with rapper Lil Murda - also take center stage. In the interview, the cast and creator talk about flack they've gotten for the show, as well as the fact that many people are supportive of it. It's a great show, with fantastic art and characters, and heart - not "just a show about strippers." ~ Edit: It's not in the interview, but as I was telling Nicco (Uncle Clifford) after, the relationship between Clifford and Murda was/is adorable. (Until a certain point) it's healthy and has a natural ease of just two people who genuinely care about each other that's great to see! #loveislove ~ While #PrideMonth was officially last month, it's a celebration all year 'round! Happy #Pride2
Halo Infinite SUCKS: 343 Industries is the WORST Gaming Studio of All Time I give my Halo Infinite Review. As an OG Halo fan from literally Day 1, it is heartbreaking. 343 Industries had 6 years to work on this game and have been screwing up Halo games with 4, 5, and the MCC for over 10 years. It's time for them to go! Edit: It was $10 for one color, NOT $20, my bad! SPOILER WARNINGReviewing the newest entry of the MCU. Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings. And man do I have to say I really enjoyed this one.Edit: It tried timestamps. Didn't work, I pretty much talk about spoilers the whole time--NON SPOILER REVIEW BELOW--Shang-Chi is a film that embraces both the technique and the beauty of its action. Some breathtaking visuals combined with fantastic camera work make this one of the most visually pleasing films in the MCU and maybe all superhero films. It also has elements of; tradition, family values and responsibility. Shang-Chi himself is a welcome addition to the ever growing roster of MCU heroes, but it's the side characters and organizations, i.e. Xialing and the Ten Rings and Ta Loa, I am excited to see how they come into play in the future. Add to that the clean CG in the film makes Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings one of the best first entries/debut for a Marvel character. I mean if anyone did anything Avenger worthy on their first outing, it's this man. Final Score 8.5/10

We take a different tack this week and discuss out favorite heist films. (EDIT: It's the 9th episode, not the 8th as I say in the intro.) What would we define as a "heist film"? In 1987, the police received a tip that Ayakanno Marimuthu had been killed and cooked into curry with rice. The suspects? His wife and her three brothers. It was reported that Ayakanno had a temper, that he was drunk and violent. Was that motive? Nothing was ever found - not his body, not a murder weapon, not the alleged cooking pot... TW: gender dysphoria Come listen to me talk about my experience with gender identity with my friends Maria (a cisgender girl) and Ben (a trans guy, FTM)! Gender identity is a widely discussed topic today, but it was nice to be able to hear different perspectives on what it means to be transgender. I left in a bit at the end where we were all gushing about the new Minecraft update, as well. Enjoy! Edit: It's so interesting how my gender identity has changed since November. In December, I decided to switch to he/they pronouns and I experience a lot more dysphoria than I did when recording this episode. I now absolutely hate it when people use she/her for me. It goes to show that you can feel one way and then completely change your identity. Going back and forth between identities doesn't make those identities any less valid and I think that's something people need to hear. I'm happy that I'm finding myself :)

Rob and I got into a marital tift the other night because I made the claim that I never lie. He didn’t agree. He contests that I omit details in a way that leads people to believe something that isn’t true. That’s not lying right? That’s just a totally healthy need for people to like me. So, in our interview with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead, this plays out something like this, - “I have to tell you, in the first 2 minutes of Synchronic I was totally getting vibes of Midsommar…” and what I was about to say was “THANK GOD it wasn’t like that, because that movie was the WORST” but Moorehead jumped in to let me know that “If I loved Midsommar… I should definitely check out his film “The Endless” to which I replied, “Ooooh… I’ll definitely have to check that out!” But see, I didn’t say what movie or when I would be checking it out…so see? Not a lie. (Edit: It turns out, I've see The Endless...shhh don't tell) A bit about Synchronic Two friends Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan) are best friends and are working as paramedics on the night shift. They begin to encounter a series of strange deaths and people in hypnotic-like states that they link to a new designer drug, Synchronic. In the mix of all of this Dennis’s daughter Brianna (Ally Ioannides) goes missing and the story unravels the more details about this trending drug and it’s true effects. Time travel! Steve discovers something about himself that motivates him to buy up all the Synchronic in town to protect others, and to take it himself and chronicle how the pill works with different forms of ingestion, how it causes you to time travel with the goal of discovering what happened to Brianna. A bit about our interview with Justin Benson / Aaron Moorehead Rob was super nervous about talking to the creative duo of Benson and Moorehead because he really admires their collective movie-making skills. I had only seen parts of two of their previous films, because murder-horror-thrillers always have a way of lulling me into a good sleep. This isn’t to say I don’t like their movies (I liked Spring), I’m just still an exhausted Mom, at the end of the day. We really enjoyed catching up with Benson and Moorehead. Admittedly, we had a whole bevy of questions for them that we weren’t able to get to because of time constraints, but we hope you enjoy the time with had with this talented duo! Synchronic trailer! https://youtu.be/XGCrg1OAYfs Synchronic releases on VOD October 23rd!

Lucy and Saul are fully aware that the world has taken a monumental shift - the Coronavirus outbreak has left our little bit of the world in Horticulture reeling both personally and professionally. So we both decided that instead of our longer format episodes every 3 weeks or so - we going to record shorter podcasts, through the week, to bring you a slice of our lives at East Donyland Hall and Stonelands and beyond - trying to bring a little bit of spring and sunshine to your eardrums.Bank holidays are always gardening weekends in Lucy and Saul's houses - an extra day tending to there own personal patches is always well needed a they spend most of there times tending the larger gardens at Stonelands and East Donyland, but what have they been up to. Well Saul always relishes extra time to learn more about his beloved tropical plants - this time joining an Online Class given live by Fairchild Botanical Garden on Gingers, and Lucy spends more time in her amazing Kitchen Garden at home where among many weird and wonderful veg she is growing Agretti - a halophyte that adds a little crunch to her salads.(Edit: It was only Monday afternoon when Saul realised it wasn't a Bank Holiday and spent the rest of the day feeling quite stupid as he pottered away in his garden at home. Part 2 of a 2 part special... loaded on sugar the gang try more cis food, discuss the anatomy of seabirds and work out the moral grey areas in a favourite fairy tale. We talk about testing Starfinder, Fire Tower, Hands of Fate, Sumer, and many other games! Oh, and Dan is back as well. Episode 25 - Critics: This Isn't For You Impartial as ever, your attractive hosts, EJ Pennyman and Ryan Dalton have a follow up to the episode about lazy crticism. Here is an episode about lazy writing. Can an auteur claim a work is not 'for the critics' as a defense of said lazy writing? Working definition of Criticism: the analysis and judgment of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work EDIT: It was June Cleaver who spoke Jive in airplane. Also, here's a link to 'Sweet Cuppin' Cakes' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SLA57pppzI. Watch this if Ryan's ending aside leads you astray. The Crew of the Tin Sparrow have tracked down those responsible for the murder of Numdress the Hutt - Oldregg and CJ the Lost Boy. *EDIT* It has been brought to my attention that the audio at the end of this episode was previously used in Episode 15.... Whoops! I forgot I had already used it, and threw it on the end here. My apologies if that confuses our listeners.
We're down to a paltry week later than intended this time around, progress! The audio issues from the previous episode should be resolved now except in a few places, and all email adresses mentioned in the episode are real, so good times. We still have that lame intro though. Edit: It seems the music from the first break lasts a few seconds too long. Sorry about that guys. In this episode: We discuss the third Humble Bundle Andy says some mean things about Kick It, despite it being a work in progress Quick Save - All games need it The Chief volunteers his eyes for a very special cause, if you'd like to help out, please contact him at penisfund@spacewalrus.net Anti-piracy methods we approve of The Bee Gees. A fair bit of this discussion had to be cut from the episode due to yet more audio issues Myke and Andy reveal their inability to memorise the months in the year Controversy! Ok so here it is (finally) --our 'live' episode of the glimmercast.Basically, Dustin and I set up shop outside of the comfort of glimmercast studios (aka my apartment) and took our microphones down into the red room on monday, Dec. 8 and recorded our podcast in front of a crowd. If you weren't there it might be hard to track with everything that was going on, so I apologize in advance for the craziness of the audio in the episode. In the future when we do live podcasts we will make sure to set up crowd mics to pick up what other people are saying better, along with organizing the format in a stricter way so we don't get a ton of people talking over one another.Regardless, it was a fun night and we talked about a ton of different stuff to close out the podcasting before break. Here in the next week or so I'm going to record a small episode to tide everyone over until we all return to Olivet in January.Enjoy!-ScottEDIT: It seems that for whatever reason the audio completely tanks after about 18 minutes. I went back into the original file and theres something wrong with it that I can't fix. What a bummer. I think maybe we need to equipment as this is the second time that this has happened now.
