American actor, voice actor and director
POPULARITY
This episode's guest is actor, writer, voiceover artist, and unapologetic improv nerd, Roxana Ortega.Roxana is one of those rare artists whose vulnerability, honesty, and humor hit you all at once – and leave a lasting impression. If her voice sounds familiar, it might be because she's voiced everything from the passionate Frida Casagrande on The Casagrandes to characters in Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, and Monsters at Work. She's narrated Pulitzer Prize-winning novels, voiced countless animated characters, and is a master of voice matching (yes, she's dubbed for Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek). In our conversation, Roxana takes us through the unexpected path that led her to acting – from growing up in an academic household where creativity wasn't considered a “real” career, to having a life-changing epiphany while teaching English in Spain. We talk about the internal battle between playing it safe and going after what you truly want—and what it really means to decide to be an artist. We go deep into the power of improv as both a performance tool and a life philosophy, how failure can be a gift, and why community-building and representation matter now more than ever. Roxana shares how she uses her voice – literally and figuratively – to make space for underrepresented stories, and how she's continued to evolve as a writer, performer, and director.Whether you're someone who thrives on stage or someone working up the courage to take the leap, Roxana's journey will remind you that embracing risk, staying curious, and being fiercely yourself is always worth it.Episode Chapters 00:00 – Welcome + Introduction02:00 – Names, Language, and Laughter04:00 – Academic Roots & Artistic Restlessness07:55 – The Epiphany in Spain13:49 – “I Decided to Be an Actor”16:00 – Improv, Joy, and Redefining Failure21:45 – Performing, Directing, and Creating Her Own Work32:00 – Representation, Identity, and Making Space40:00 – The Tapestry of Humanity49:30 – Amazing Race Nerd Out50:50 – Blissful Spinster & Making Art on Your Own Terms54:35 – Final Words of Wisdom55:14 – What's Next for Roxana58:00 – Wrap-Up & Thank YouRoxana's Bio:Roxana Ortega is an American actor, writer, and voiceover artist who is known for voicing the ever-emotional Frida Casagrande on Nickelodeon's Emmy award-winning and Imagen award-winning cartoon The Casagrandes, a spinoff of the acclaimed series The Loud House.On-camera, she recently starred opposite Danny Trejo, Reno Wilson, and a cast of legends including Garrett Morris, Barry Bostwick, and James Hong in the Universal feature Grand-Daddy Day Care. (00:01) Indoor Golf Technology and Instruction This chapter welcomes listeners to a golf-centric discussion featuring top instructors Jeff Smith and James Hong. We explore the benefits of indoor golf facilities, particularly during winter, as well as advancements in golf technology. With simulators and launch monitors, practicing indoors has become increasingly accurate, allowing players to hone their skills regardless of the weather. The conversation also touches on the latest innovations, like the Foresight launch monitor that syncs with Bushnell rangefinders, offering real-time data to improve decision-making on the course. This technology could streamline the game by suggesting clubs and potentially speeding up play, underscoring the exciting intersection of golf and tech. (13:31) Improving Golf Alignment Perception This chapter focuses on the challenges of perception and alignment in golf, particularly for amateur players. We explore techniques for improving aim, such as using alignment sticks and creating a practice station to train the eye and mind. The discussion highlights the importance of understanding personal perception of straight lines and how it affects aiming on the course. By examining how different people perceive alignment, I demonstrate methods to help golfers correct their aim, such as placing clubs across the body to visualize alignment and using finger spacing to gauge accurate aiming points. This practical approach emphasizes consistent practice and adjusting techniques based on individual perception, ultimately helping players improve their accuracy and performance. (21:06) Donut Debate and Golf Instruction This chapter explores the intricacies of golf alignment and the challenges golfers face in maintaining proper aim. We share a detailed anecdote about a regular client who struggles with aligning his shots, illustrating how small adjustments and understanding peripheral vision can improve accuracy. We also touch on the humorous side of golfing practice, noting how sometimes, despite hitting beautiful shots, perception can skew a golfer's understanding of their performance. As the conversation shifts, we take a lighthearted detour discussing the ongoing debate between Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts, highlighting personal experiences and the regional preferences that can affect a brand's success. (24:53) Optimizing Golf Swing With Age This chapter focuses on the adjustments and mindset shifts necessary for aging golfers to maintain their game. We emphasize the importance of managing expectations, especially regarding distance loss as players age. Strategies to minimize distance loss include maintaining physical fitness without excessive gym routines and adjusting one's swing style. By exploring different swing styles, such as those of Tommy Fleetwood and Vijay Singh, we discuss finding a technique that suits an individual's natural movement. Additionally, we address the challenge of conflicting advice from instructors and tipsters, highlighting the need for golfers to focus on what aligns with their body's capabilities rather than blindly following trends or professional golfers' techniques. The importance of personalized instruction and avoiding one-size-fits-all tips is stressed, encouraging players to develop a game plan that works uniquely for them. (30:48) Indoor Golf Technology Advancements This chapter explores the humorous and often frustrating world of unsolicited golf advice, as we share anecdotes about how well-intentioned tips from fellow golfers can sometimes derail a round. We also touch on the importance of professional lessons and the stubbornness of some golfers who proudly avoid them. As we navigate through these stories, we introduce our guest, James Hong, and discuss the rise of indoor golf facilities as an alternative during harsh weather conditions. These venues, likened to bowling alleys, have benefitted from advancements in technology, offering improved golf mats that closely replicate grass conditions. Finally, we reminisce about an innovative mat suspended on magnets, showcased at a past PGA show, highlighting the evolution of golf practice tools. (43:52) Embracing Indoor Golf Technology and Instruction This chapter explores the transformation of indoor teaching environments with the integration of modern technology. We discuss how embracing these changes has shifted the perception of indoor spaces from being dark and claustrophobic to open and airy. A key example highlighted is Jeff's indoor studio in Indiana, which features a large space and high ceilings, showcasing how such environments can positively impact teaching and learning experiences. James and I express gratitude to Jeff for sharing his insights and experiences, emphasizing the importance of adapting to and appreciating these innovative spaces. We encourage our listeners to take note of these advancements in educational settings.
(00:01) Golf Equipment Rules and Performance This chapter addresses the misconceptions surrounding golf equipment and its impact on improving one's game. We emphasize that buying new, expensive clubs won't drastically change your performance if you're not already skilled with your current set. Our discussion with James Hong highlights that proper lessons can be more beneficial than acquiring new gear. We also explore the USGA's proposed rule changes and their potential effects on older golf equipment, expressing skepticism about the necessity of these changes for amateur golfers. Additionally, we consider how distance achievements can motivate golfers, particularly older players, and how rolling back equipment capabilities could diminish that motivation. Ultimately, we underscore the importance of skill development over equipment upgrades in achieving a better golf game. (09:14) Improving Golf Game Through Strategy This chapter addresses the challenges faced by golfers as they adapt to changes in equipment regulations and the impact on their game. We explore how new rules, such as making golf balls fly shorter distances, affect players, especially those not playing professionally. We discuss the importance of making golf more accessible for casual players by allowing them to use training aids like grip-enhancing clubs, even if they're not technically legal in competitions. The conversation highlights the benefits of proper grip and technique, leading to improved performance and enjoyment of the game. We also emphasize the importance of seeking guidance from experienced instructors to help break personal golfing milestones, such as scoring under 90, 80, or even 70, by focusing on consistent practice and technique rather than relying solely on new equipment. (13:54) Strategies for Improving Golf Game This chapter explores strategies for breaking 90 in golf, focusing on understanding individual strengths and weaknesses. We discuss the importance of identifying areas that need improvement, like scoring from inside 50 yards, and the misconceptions players often have about par expectations. Emphasizing the need for realistic play, we suggest that golfers consider each hole strategically, turning challenging par fours into personal par fives to avoid unnecessary risks. We also highlight the importance of selecting the right clubs and staying within one's comfort zone to prevent double or triple bogeys. Additionally, we stress the significance of putting, encouraging golfers to pay attention to their three-putt statistics and make adjustments to save strokes. Throughout, we underline the necessity of honest self-assessment and smart decision-making to achieve personal golfing goals. (24:19) Indoor Golf Practice Strategies This chapter explores effective strategies for improving golf skills when outdoor practice is limited. I discuss the importance of maintaining communication with students, using tools like OnForm Golf to provide ongoing feedback and support. I emphasize that practice doesn't always require hitting a ball, highlighting creative indoor methods such as dry swings with a ribbon attached to the club for visual feedback, and chipping pennies onto a sofa to develop touch and precision. Additionally, we explore the benefits of practicing short game swings without a ball to internalize the feel of different distances. These techniques not only build confidence but also ensure that golfers continue to improve their skills, even when they can't practice on the grass. (29:03) Improving Golf With Ping Pong Balls This chapter covers practical tips for improving golf swings without the need for hitting actual golf balls, highlighting the effectiveness of practicing with ping pong balls. By using the clock method and experimenting with swing lengths, we emphasize the importance of consistency and understanding one's own swing distances. For indoor practice, we extol the virtues of ping pong balls as a safe, effective, and inexpensive tool that doesn't damage surroundings. The ability to spin these balls and observe their motion helps in learning about the spin axis of a golf ball, making them an excellent resource for indoor practice. As we continue our journey to break 80 this season, Jeff Smith and James Hong provide valuable insights and encouragement, underscoring the accessibility and practicality of golf practice in any setting. (42:39) Improving Golf Game Through Instruction This chapter emphasizes the importance of putting practice, especially on a 30-foot mat, to improve your golf game by focusing on speed control and shot placement. We explore the benefits of reducing the number of putts, which can significantly lower your overall score, potentially taking you from not breaking 90 to nearly reaching 80. We stress that achieving this improvement doesn't require expensive equipment but rather finding a PGA professional you trust and can relate to for guidance. Additionally, we encourage seeking recommendations from fellow golfers for the best local instructors. Lastly, we invite listeners to join us regularly and reach out with any specific questions to benefit from the expertise of top golf instructors like Jeff Smith.

We've been doing What's New to Netflix for nine whole years, as we mentioned in our last show, so we do what we do every year! That's right, we are doing a full-length commentary for a movie that's on Netflix right now! This time it's the wacky yet heartfelt multiverse of madness, also known as Everything Everywhere All at Once, starring Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, and James Hong, from 2022, directed by Daniels. So, fire up Netflix and watch all of that silly sci-fi mayhem unfold while we also join in the fun! WARNING: This is not a typical episode of What's New to Netflix. This is an audio commentary. This episode is meant to be listened to while you watch Everything Everywhere All at Once. If you try to listen to this episode and you are not watching Everything Everywhere All at Once along with us, a lot of this will not make any sense. got a suggestion for the show?: whatsnewtonetflix@gmail.com

If you like what you hear, and/or would like to give us feedback on how we're doing, follow us at: https://beacons.ai/senornerdpodcast / senornerdpodcast @senornerdpod on Twitter Everything Everywhere All at Once is a 2022 American absurdist science-fiction comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who produced it with Anthony and Joe Russo and Jonathan Wang; the film incorporates elements from a number of genres and film mediums, including surreal comedy, science fiction, fantasy, martial arts films, immigrant narrative, and animation. Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn Quan Wang, a Chinese-American immigrant who, while audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse. The film also stars Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., and James Hong in supporting roles. Kwan and Scheinert began work on the project in 2010. Production was announced in 2018, and principal photography ran from January to March 2020. The filmmakers initially sought Jackie Chan for the lead role before the script was revised to feature a female protagonist as part of a wife-husband duo. The works of Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai, as well as the children's book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and the video game Everything, served as inspiration for several scenes. The soundtrack features compositions by Son Lux, including collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, André 3000, John Hampson, and Randy Newman. The film explores philosophical themes such as existentialism, nihilism, surrealism, and absurdism, as well as themes such as neurodivergence, depr2ession, generational trauma, and Asian American identity. Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2022, and began a limited theatrical release in the United States on March 25, 2022, before a wide release by A24 on April 8. The film grossed over $141 million worldwide, becoming A24's highest-grossing film. It garnered widespread critical acclaim, gained a large cult following, and was a success at the 95th Academy Awards, winning a leading seven awards out of eleven nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress for Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Quan, Best Supporting Actress for Curtis, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Kwan and Scheinert, and Best Film Editing. It also won two Golden Globe Awards, five Critics' Choice Awards (including Best Picture), a BAFTA Award, a record four SAG Awards (including Best Ensemble), a record seven Independent Spirit Awards (including Best Feature), and swept the four major guild awards (DGA, PGA, SAG, and WGA). With 266 awards out of 405 nominations, Everything Everywhere All at Once is currently estimated to be the most awarded film of all time.
