In the small, isolated Nevada town of Perfection, two aimless handymen Val (Kevin Bacon) and Earl (Fred Ward) were just minding their own business working their latest gig when they suddenly discover strange things occurring....including the inexplicable death of some one who has hidden way up on a light pole in the middle of nowhere. What were they afraid of....something on the ground....or underground perhaps? :o Well as it turns out, this town has been invaded by large, strange creatures travelling underground....and what results is a wild adventure which might be described as "Jaws on Land." Ron Underwood (City Slickers, Heart and Souls) directed this now beloved cult classic which first under-performed in theaters back in 1990 but has since spawned several sequels and even a TV spin-off. It also starred Michael Gross, Reba McEntire, Finn Carter, Victor Wong, and....some very nasty sand-worms?Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

For our 250th episode this week, the boys headed to Peking to discuss the Bernardo Bertolucci masterpiece ‘The Last Emperor.' The random year generator spun 1987, and we set up the film year, noted some world events, and then discussed how great it is to no longer have fantastic films set in Chinese spoken in English. Val (Kevin Bacon) and Earl (Fred Ward) are tired of their extremely small town, but they just can't seem to get out. It's like a Tom Petty song – almost! A few dead bodies bring them back. The road is blocked and that brings them back. A seismologist, Rhonda (Finn Carter), brings them back. And, of course, the subterranean tremor monsters are bringing them back. Town just isn't safe. They do have fire power though. That's thanks to Burt (Michael Gross) and Heather (Reba McEntire). It's time to teach these creatures a lesson when you're not pole vaulting over them. RTS takes some souvenir photos at Walter's (Victor Wong) store. Collin, Jeremy and La-Mar feel the “trem” from the beginning. They're still feeling it now. They have a bad case of the “trem,” and that's a testament to the fun of the film. Inquiries on cannon fuses are accepted.

It's week 2 of Carp-winter, our series on John Carpenter and his Apocalpyse Trilogy! Today's mammoth episode likely means excommunication from one or several religious institutions for the podcast. because it's the trilogy's middle-child: 1987's PRINCE OF DARKNESS!Carpenter is one of our best filmmakers who will notice a thing and make a movie about it, and this one is tied to his discovery of Quantum Mechanics. How much do you need to know about quantum mechanics? According to JC: nothing, it's just a horror movie. We're discussing how Carpenter gets to PoD after THE THING upset the world, how his efficient visual style is at its peak, Victor Wong's fascinating life, the secrets of the dream and the incamera special effects, our favourite Satan taunts, and the secret to an excellent Donald Pleasence impression. What does Born Again Christian Alice Cooper think of the theology of this movie? And for that matter, what do we think of it and how it intersects with the unknowability of quantum physics? We answer all this and so much more in our own Debate segment.Next time, we wrap up the Apocalypse Trilogy with JC's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS!
Another Patreon exclusive is out of the vault and we're talking the 1992 movie 3 Ninjas! Are Jake and Cody recording together for the first time? What do we think about the UFO/UAP news? Is one of us an alien? Did an alien make this movie? Was ninja stock up in the 90s? Does the movie hold up? Was the grandpa's stunt double obvious? How is 9/11 connected to this movie and actor Victor Wong? Would Tum Tum survive in real life? Would be be able to defeat the 3 Ninjas in a fight? Is Anthony taking the 3 Ninjas side? Why couldn't the villain Snyder tell that the undercover white cop at the beginning of the movie wasn't Arab? Was Snyder a generic 90s villain? Why was the only black kid in the movie cast as a bully? Was the dad a racist? Was he an absent father? Does he deadname his children? Are the 3 Ninjas ACAB? What happened to their babysitter after they were kidnapped? Would we be the 3 stoner villains in the movie? Were they similar to Bill & Ted/Koopa's henchmen in the 90s Super Mario Bros. Movie? Could we take the kidnappers in a fight? Was Anthony inspired as a kid to use laxative against home intruders? What scenes do we remember the most vividly? When was the last time we all watched this movie? Do we like this more than Super Mario Bros. 93? Did this movie have any notable actors? How is this movie connected to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie? Was the TMNT movie not made for kids? What else has the director of this movie, Jon Turteltaub, made? Are we planning to do an episode on Warriors of Virtue? Is Cody doing stand-up comedy with a bunch of big names in LA this week? What happened to sketch comedy? What is Jake's Patreon exclusive dark secret? What is the scar of shame? Who had the best first dark secret? Who should be murdered for their dark secret? Which 3 Ninjas would each of us be? Why do Snyder's henchmen wear plastic visors? Did the 3 Ninjas boil a guy's face off? Does the soundtrack have too much whimsy? Would these kids be taken by CPS? Who would win: the 3 Ninjas or Kevin McCallister from Home Alone? Can the Pigeon Lady and Shovel Man take on the grandpa? Who had better traps for the bad guys: Kevin or the 3 Ninjas? Is diarrhea their only weapon? Did the 3 Ninjas almost murder a guy by hanging? Was Emily an undercover agent for Snyder… or secretly his daughter?! Who had the coolest mask? Which ninja was the best actor? Does Cody have any ninja skills? Would he be the greatest or worst ninja? Would Cody survive a ninja attack? Should they reboot the 3 Ninjas? Who would play are grandpa if we were cast in the reboot? Do we have the Stephen Rosenfield-like ability to get $7000 from each Patron? Could we have beaten the bullies in a game of basketball? Does 2 months of training as a ninja equal dope basketball skills? Are the sequels to this movie any good? This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to analyze a trio of “cult classics” from the actor/director pairing of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. Starting with 1981's Escape From New York starring Mr. Russell, Donald Pleasance, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, Isaac Hayes and Season Hubley, on to 1982's The Thing starring Russell, Donald Moffat, Keith David, Richard Dysart, David Clennon, T.K, Carter, Richard Masur, Charles Hallahan and Wilford Brimley, And finally 1986's Big Trouble in Little China starring Russell, Dennis Dun, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, Donald Li, Kate Burton, Suzee Pai and Victor Wong, My two guests are the only pair who would be up for such a comprehensive cinematic showdown : Lit major and lil' Sis Roseanne Caputi and Actor Funnyman Photobug, Alex Robertson. Before we run the gauntlet, the synopses: In Escape From New Yorkex soldier and current convict Snake Plisskin is forced under the threat of death by government agent Hauk to rescue the President of the United States after a group of insurgents cause Air Force One to crash in New York city which by 1997 has become a walled off maximum security prison. The Thing catalogues the paranoia, fear and sheer horror that ensues when a shape-shifting alien invades an American Antarctic Research Facility. Big Trouble in Little China follows the mystic, martial-arts laden misadventures of blowhard truck driver Jack Burton, who, on a routine stop in San Francisco's Chinatown wins a bet over his buddy Wang Chi. In order to collect his money, Jack follows Wang to the airport to meet Wang's beautiful green-eyed betrothed bride Miao Yin who is summarily kidnapped by the evil ancient supernatural gang Lord David Lo Pan. Lo Pan, for his part, inhabits a broken down and decrepit old body and can only move as a spirit in his young and powerful form. In order to attain full strength and fleshly form, Lo Pan needs Wang's green-eyed bride to break his century old curse. With the help of lawyer Gracie Law and a troupe of warriors led by magical Egg Shen, Jack and Wang charge into David Lo Pan's compound to stage a daring rescue. Which film rates the highest?Find out!

HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST ends week 2 on a John Carpenter movie that was unappreciated in its time but has since aged like fine wine. It's the second in what Carpenter has declared his “apocalypse trilogy”. Yep. Hell and Satan is a little more than what we traditionally know in John Carpenters 1987 horror “Prince of Darkness” starring Donald Pleasance as “Father Loomis”, the twin brother of “Professor Loomis”, and also starring Victor Wong as the scientist who, unwittingly, drags Phd students to their demise. Alice Cooper is in it and the Anti-God loves piss-play. Will Walter ever come out of the closet? Check out this cult classic and then hear us talk about it. Justus and David kick off a month of Halloween horror programming with John Carpenter's underrated middle chapter in his so-called “Apocalypse Trilogy.” Pour yourself a tall glass of Satanic Baja Blast and settle in because Justus is going to gush about this movie like he's a physics student who's just been stabbed with a broken bicycle by Alice Cooper. As for David? Well, let's just say that neither the Holy Ghost nor the God plutonium will save him from Justus' ire. This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve raise the flag and welcome back esteemed guest of honor Chris from the Mount Molehill podcast as we rap about his favorite and second entry of John Carpenter's self-appointed Apocalypse Trilogy, Prince of Darkness from 1987. Join us as we continue our second year of seasonal horror centric cinema scrutiny to discuss another Carpenter flick which has also been rediscovered over the years and, to a lesser degree, praised for its contribution to cult horror, witness both Donald Pleasence and Victor Wong absolutely defying typecast and dominating in their respective roles, and G-Baby leaves us with a trademark overshare on perfecting the art of annoying the living piss out of your significant other. The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, dare to stare into the void that undoubtedly stares back into us as we approach nexus between religion and science while Steve calls horseshnip on Schrödinger's cat, a claim neither of us are academically qualified to make. Katie and Bridget make their way to Bixby but then immediately keep turning around as they re-watch the movie: Tremors! It's a story all about a small town... Filled with dust... That is ransacked by giant man-eating worms! Eek! Come along as we meet Kevin Bacon - er, we mean, Valentine - a dude who never has a plan but also never forgot those sick Footloose dance moves (and neither did we); Earl, the ultimate wing man and honestly most go with the flow guy ever; Rhonda, a grad student who really is the only one who knows what's happening and YES we should all listen to her; and Burt and Reba (aka Heather), two doomsday preppers who thank god were there otherwise everyone would be screwed! Unfortunately not everyone makes it out of the town of Perfection alive (RIP Grandpa) and the folks have to band together to outsmart those Graboids! Will Kevin and crew be able to defeat those worms? Should pole vaulting be left to the Olympics!? Released in 1990, it stars Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross, Reba McEntire, Finn Carter, and our fan favorite Victor Wong (aka 3 Ninjas Grandpa).

The Spin Chagrin, a concept that finds Frank having to watch a movie he's never seen before based on the random spin of a wheel filled with off-the-wall genres, continues into a new year. In this episode, Frank's category was "Ninjas Attack 7: Ruthless Aggression," where Frank had to watch a ninja movie with a professional wrestler that wrestled at some point during WWE's Ruthless Aggression era. He choose 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain, starring Hulk Hogan along with Jim Varney, Loni Anderson, and Victor Wong.

Join our Discord https://discord.gg/jDrUtNcRq2 So this had been planned as a two-parter titled "Those Pesky Kids!" (the other movie we were going to cover was 1997's Masterminds) but instead will provide us with our final episode before we go on indefinite hiatus. More on that in a minute but first some details on the episode. For this last hurrah we pulled in an excellent guest in the form of fellow podcaster and Coppola family expert Petros Patsilivas to talk about a film that both him, our regular host Scott Murphy and we would guess any 90s raised martial art enthusiast have a lot of nostalgia for 3 Ninjas! Over the course of the episode Petros and Scott talked about scenery chewing villains, obvious stunt double work and the greatness of Victor Wong. Plus, they get into how this movie manages to pack in EVERY early 90s cliche, try to make sense of the villain Snyder's operation and how this film was popular enough to spawn three sequels. Lastly, Craig and I would just like to thank everyone who checked out our little podcast that allowed us to revisit some childhood action favourites and some movies we never want to watch again! It has been a blast. Hopefully we can record specials in the future. So, keep subscribed as you just never know when we will be back!
The Bois check in with Wombat and ICCC and Roosevelt alum, Victor Wong. Probably the most fun episode yet!
"We don't lead with Blockchain, we lead with the value." In this episode, I'm in conversation with Victor Wong, who is the Chief Product Officer and Founder of BlockApps, on the problem of seismic entitlement management for upstream oil and gas companies. Seismic data is long life, frequently changes hands, very high value, multi-format, and gains in value as interpretation technology advances. The administration of the rules of use and access, called entitlements, are contracted between companies, but administering those contracts is very hard because of the nature of seismic data. Blockchain technology presents a very attractive solution, reducing process times to seconds (vs months and years for the status quo). "You can think of it as like a registry that you can trust. And because it exists on the blockchain, it's kind of neutral. It's not held by one party, and it's not owned by anyone." Victor Wong is a serial entrepreneur and recognized thought-leader in the blockchain space. In his current role as Chief Product Officer & Founder at BlockApps, Victor has helped define the STRATO architecture to solve key blockchain issues of permissioning, data privacy, and enterprise-level performance. "The best thing that a startup has, in their complex world, is speed of execution. That's your one advantage, because there are always going to be bigger companies, there are always going to be people that have more resources, but the bigger you are, the slower you make decisions." It's the third anniversary of the podcast and the Common Craig is STILL not cured! Nicole has chosen a nostalgic favorite, John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China (1986), in hopes of finally escaping the Hell of the Way Too Long Podcasts!Kurt Russell stars in this 80s box office flop turned cult film sensation, as Jack Burton, a truck driver who uses his swaggering bravado to mask the fact that he is completely inept at pretty much everything. When a stop in San Francisco has him witnessing the kidnapping of his friend's fiancée, the resulting adventures in Chinatown leave Jack feeling completely out of his element. But to be fair, how many people would feel comfortable stumbling into a back alley funeral procession that becomes a war? Or meeting an ancient sorcerer, who must marry and then sacrifice someone with green eyes, to appease the demon who has cursed him? Not to mention the Lords of Death, a gang of toughs, have stolen his truck. It does seem like a lot for one day.
Big Trouble In Little China movie review from the Salty Nerds have them perplexed at this awesome cult classic movie from John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. Kurt Russell plays the legendary Jack Burton who teams up with Dennis Dun and Victor Wong to fight the cursed Chinese sorcerer David Lo Pan (played by James Hong ) all the while romancing Kim Cattrall and dropping epic one-liners. Big Trouble In Little China is ahead of its time in many ways, and part of its box office failure was because the studio didn't know how to market such an off-the-wall movie. But John Carpenter has such a subversive take on typical 1908s action movies that this film is quite brilliant once you "get the joke." What is your Big Trouble In Little China movie review? The Golden Child movie review from the Salty Nerds has them talking about this 1986 classic from Eddie Murphy which went from being a serious mystical thriller to what essentially amounts to a supernatural version of Beverly Hills Cop. This fantasy comedy film is a nostalgic favorite of the Salty Nerds and follows Eddie Murphy as private investigator Chandler Jarrell as he teams up with expert martial artist Kee Nang to search for the kidnapped Golden Child. Along the way, Eddie Murphy deals with strange mystical creatures, biker gangs, and the evil Sardo Numspa, played by Tywin Lannister himself - Charles Dance. Also, you can't have an 80s movie that deals with Asians without Victor Wong and James Hong! But the real question is, why is this movie (which was originally going to star Mel Gibson) so hated by Eddie Murphy that he swore never to do a sequel to it? We discuss all this and more in our review of The Golden Child! What is your The Golden Child movie review? Did you love it? Hate it? Do you want the knife? Pleeeeeaaaasssse? Phil & Jake are back to rank John Carpenter's 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China, the musical subgenre known as Bro-Country, and Baby Yoda on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The kid in Madonna's Open Your Heart video isn't Leo Dicaprio, he's Felix Howard, who is now an A&R guy. Actors that we talk about include Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, Victor Wong, James Hong, Danny Trejo, He Huy Quan, Al Leong (here's his wedding announcement), Dennis Quaid, Harrison Ford, Jason Mantzoukas, Tom Cruise, Jackie Chan and Rodney Dangerfield. Other movies discussed include Everything Everywhere All at Once, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Overboard (which Phil thinks is really indefensible because Kurt Russell's character brainwashes Goldie Hawn's; “it's a Rapemantic comedy”), Minority Report, Dreamscape (filmed in Stockton, CA), Innerspace, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Golden Child, Friday, Caddyshack, The Matrix, Trading Places, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Flashdance, The Truman Show, The Wizard of Oz, Howard the Duck and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Jack Burton is a very influential protagonist, maybe even more so than Snake Plissken. He's sort of John Wayne as a buffoon. Bruce Willis' persona owes something to Jack Burton. If you want to hear an even more in-depth discussion of Big Trouble in Little China, check out this episode of the Blank Check podcast. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson owns the remake rights to Big Trouble in Little China and makes noises about a remake from time to time. John Carpenter's soundtrack (and especially the theme song) are a must-listen. Here's the New York Magazine article in which Jody Rosen first coined the term “Bro-Country.” Here's a history of the Country laundry-list song. Dr. Suess' pants with no one inside them are from the last story in the Sneetches book. “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line is maybe the ur-text of Bro-Country. Or– going further back– in could be either “Honky Tonkin'” or “Jambalaya” by Hank Williams. Other songs discussed by include “Big Green Tractor” and “Dirt Road Anthem” by Jason Aldean, “Sand in My Boots” by Morgan Wallen, “Jack & Diane” by John Mellencamp, “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” by Trace Adkins, “Dilemma” by Nelly w/ Kelly Rowland, “If That Ain't Country” by David Allan Coe, “That's My Kind of Night” by Luke Brian, “Friday” by Rebecca Black, “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” by Hank Williams Jr., “If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time” by Lefty Frizzell, “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks, “Tulsa Time” by Don Williams, “Boys Round Here” by Blake Shelton, “New Truck” by Dylan Scott, “Beer With My Friends” by Shy Carter, “Beer” and “Turned Up On the Weekend” by Branchez & Big Wet, “American Pie” by Don McLean, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick, and “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt.
