Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Elizabeth Crook, author of the novel THE MADSTONE.  Set during Reconstruction in Texas in 1868, THE MADSTONE is an adventure story of a young frontiersman who helps a pregnant young mother and her child flee across Texas from outlaws bent on revenge. The outlaws are based on the historically true Swamp Fox gang which terrorized and killed blacks, and agents of the Freedmen's Bureau, a federal agency which provided relief and helped formerly enslaved people become self-sufficient.  In the interview we discussed Crook's commitment to tell the whole truth about Texas history in her storytelling. Purpose-driven companies who are focused on doing the right thing. Words like ‘fair trade,’ ‘eco-friendly,’ and ‘triple-bottom-line’ are commonly associated with these companies, but does it all really matter to a scaling-up business? Do your beliefs help you or hurt you in life? Leaders with limiting beliefs prevent themselves from showing up as powerful leaders. The thing about it is, everyone has limiting beliefs, it’s how we identify them and improve upon them, that helps us get out of the trap.   Elizabeth Crook is a business strategist and advisor at Orchard Advisors. She is also a Gazelles coach and the bestselling author of Live Large.   When Elizabeth was 30 years old, she was living in Latin America and working directly with the American Embassy as well as consulting companies on how to expand and grow.   One day, Elizabeth was invited to speak at a reading and learning group. Despite her extensive experience at the time, Elizabeth kept starting every sentence with, ‘I’m probably wrong, but...’ This belief was seriously limiting her career and her potential in life. When it was pointed out to her, Elizabeth had to stop and break through this.   We can’t scale a company without scaling its leaders as well. An important part of Elizabeth’s work is helping leaders develop and increase their self-awareness so that they can show up in a powerful way. If you’re not evolving your leadership, there is a serious problem within the company.   People can turn a strength into a weakness as they take on more responsibility. For example, Elizabeth was working one-on-one with a leadership member who believed asking for help was a sign of weakness. He cited that his best strength was being self-reliant.   This might have worked when he was an employee, but as a leader, he now needs to grow and start to depend on others. By putting this man in a leadership role, his primary strength effectively got turned upside down. Elizabeth Crook talks about a critical step in decision making, to identify all your possible options. In our culture, we tend to think in terms of either/or instead of having an abundance of possibilities. Often, the way we come to our decisions is to boil it down to, “I can either do this OR do that.” Instead, we should ask, “What are the other options I could entertain?” As we allow ourselves to consider more options, we begin to see our whole range of choices instead of getting locked into binary thinking.

Elizabeth Crook reminds us that hard things happen in life. People lose jobs, or a big client, divorce, illness…something we did not imagine. And as those storms come into our life, it feels like our whole landscape has been destroyed. Many times we try and run from those emotions rather than face our emotional storm so we can move forward. Elizabeth says it’s better to allow ourselves to face and feel the emotions, then move past them so we can base our decisions on the hard truth of the facts as they are.

Elizabeth Crook says as we walk through our life or business, all kinds of tempting invitations will come our way. But as you work through your strategic planning, you will have to decide if those “opportunities” the direction you should be going based on what you want, or are they a detour that will take you away from your ultimate goal? Sometimes others will offer us opportunities, and we have to decide if we’re playing their game instead of playing our own.

Elizabeth Crook says if you are not clear on what you want and why then you end up looking at pros and cons without having clarity. Your first step is the foundational question, “What do I want out of the situation?” When making a big decision on a complicated situation there are many steps, but the first step is to know clearly what your bottom line is.
