Jessica Knoll joins Carol Fitzgerald to discuss her latest novel, BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN, which is a Bookreporter Bets On selection. It's a fictitious look at the victims of a serial killer, based on Ted Bundy, though he is never called by name here. Jessica talks about the structure of the novel, where the crimes that open the book are captured hour by hour and day by day. She explores the three characters in the book, as well as the research that she did to get the right tone and tenor for the story. Jessica realizes that if the victims had survived, they would be in their 50s and 60s today. She also touches on the television series adaptation that she has been tapped to write, as well as her experience with the film adaptation of LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE. Knoll's book focuses on the women involved—victims, survivors, and investigators—and turns a bright light on the banality of evil."--Goodreads, 55 Most Anticipated Books of Fall"Jessica Knoll is a careful writer, and this, her third novel, is a perfect match for her cold dissection of social mores and her fierce rage at misogyny. Knoll takes on the story of Ted Bundy, told from the perspective of a student who survives a horrific attack on a sorority house... Some may claim that the crime genre is rift with misogyny; those people have not read Jessica Knoll. She tears apart the restrictive world of women's roles and lays bare the purpose of such hobbles: to keep women from making a scene, to keep them from seeking justice, and most of all, to keep them from seeking their own lives."CrimeReads/LitHub, Most Anticipated Books of 2023"Bright Young Women braids the stories of two survivors, Pamela and Tina, and their fervent bond forged through grief and a pursuit of justice."—Bustle, The 35 Best New Books of Fall 2023“Something about fall weather begs for a thriller, and Jessica Knoll delivers with her latest.”—Country Living“A stunning, engaging subversion of the Bundy myth—and the true-crime genre.”—Kirkus (Starred Review)“Stunning… By focusing on the women affected by her Ted Bundy stand-in instead of the nuances of his criminal psychology, Knoll movingly reframes an American obsession without stripping it of its intrigue. The results are masterful.”—Publisher's Weekly (Starred Review) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/booklicious/message

On this episode of Complicated Conversations we are thrilled to welcome back one of our favorites, Jessica Knoll! Jessica is the New York Times best-selling author of The Favorite Sister and Luckiest Girl Alive, which she adapted and executive produced for the screen. Jessica's highly-anticipated new novel, Bright Young Woman, is a fictional reimagining of the final murderous spree of our country's most famous serial killer.  We chat with Jessica about how this book is the result of a “rage epiphany” and proposes a new narrative – that the so-called brilliant and charismatic man behind these acts was actually incredibly average – and that it was the women whose lives were cut short who were the exceptional ones. Jessica discusses the bright young women of her novel – which one helped her work through issues within herself; how these women leaned on each other and saved one another; the ways in which victims are always blamed; and how important it was for her to make clear that women were never fooled by this man. We also talk about grief and finding purpose from loss. We couldn't let Jessica go without also covering some Bravo content too! Bright Young Women is out now and it's amazing! In today's bumper October Bonus Episode, Emilie Sommer of East City Bookshop kicks us off with suggested comp titles. After which, Jessica Knoll joins Carly to talk about Bright Young Women. They also discuss opening pages and prologues; the book vs the audio version; violence on the page; the power in naming things we typically shy away from; the internet and social media as a tool for authors; influences and inspiration; being a part of screen adaptations and filming; and being in a healthy creative space. After which, we do a deep dive in memoirs!Bianca interviews Tove Danovich, journalist and author of the chicken-keeping memoir and animal welfare reporting book, Under the Henfluence. They discuss Tove's journey in publishing a book that encompasses two very difficult genres to market and sell (non-fiction and memoir); writing a proposal for a book that is largely unique and difficult to comp; blending anecdotal humour with animal welfare reporting; the structure of Tove's memoir; and Tove's advice for memoirists.Bianca then chats with Natalie Maclean, journalist and author of the memoir, Wine Witch on Fire. They discuss what inspired Natalie to write a memoir about such a difficult time in her life; starting with the "inciting incident"; how to balance writing your truth with still being mindful of the potential legal ramifications of doing so; when to consult with lawyers and who covers that cost; and the witch-related structure and theme of the book. Finally, in the Q&A segment, Carly and CeCe answer all your burning questions!Find us on our socials:Twitter: @TSNOTYAW @BiancaM_author @carlywatters @ceciliaclyraInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_shit_about_writing/https://www.instagram.com/biancamarais_author/https://www.instagram.com/carlywatters/ https://www.instagram.com/cece_lyra_agent/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TSNOTYAWWebsites: www.theshitaboutwriting.com, www.biancamarais.com, www.carlywatters.com and www.cecilialyra.comBookshop.org affiliate page: https://bookshop.org/shop/theshitnoonetellsyouaboutwritingTo ask a question, go to: https://sayhi.chat/TSNOTYAWTo connect with Emilie Sommer go to https://www.instagram.com/emiliegsommer/ and you can find East City Bookshop at https://www.instagram.com/eastcitybookshop/More information about Jessica Knoll can be found athttps://www.jessicaknoll.com/.
