Welcome to Season 2 of The Writers' Cafe! Brought to you from the award-winning indie, Sevenoaks Bookshop! This week's visitor to the cafe is the lyrical and deeply contemplative Miranda Cowley Heller. Miranda is the bestselling author of The Paper Palace, a Reese's Book Club pick and long-listed for the Women's Prize for Fiction. Her debut poetry collection, What The Deep Water Knows, traces the arc of womanhood; it is a mediation on self-discovery, love and its losses; the complexity of family, and nature's quiet role in shaping memory and resilience. Join us as this episode as we delve into the inner realm of girlhood and womanhood illustrated through poetry; the nature of love, family, nature, and 'soul hunger'. Bookseller review: “This poetry collection chronicles a woman's life in six parts. It is a collection I know I will hold dear for a long time, as it made me fall back in love with poetry. What The Deep Water Knows is beautiful, deeply vulnerable and terribly gut-wrenching at times. With wonderful, intimate reflections on love--familial, self, romantic-- I hope everyone gives it a read and comes away as in awe of Miranda's weaving of words as I was!"If you are new to The Writer's Cafe pod: Inspired by our own in-shop cafe of the same name and the conversations about books, life, literature, and so much more every single day - as well as the literary salons of old where gossip thrived - this podcast seeks to highlight and celebrate the best writers and voices every episode with a warm, detailed conversation about their work and craft.Miranda's work can be purchased with us here:The Paper Palace https://sevenoaksbookshop.co.uk/shop/the-paper-palace-by-miranda-cowley-heller-2/ Hosted on Acast. Hiya, book club besties! This month, we read the New York Times Number One Best Seller: The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller. The story's protagonist is Elle Bishop, a 50-something woman in love with two men - her husband, and her childhood best friend. As the blurb tells us, “so begins a story that unfolds over twenty-four hours and across fifty years.” What is Elle's big secret - the one that has kept her tethered to, but arm's distance from, her best friend Jonas? And which man will she choose in the end? Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle go everywhere: from standout characters, to the theme of intergenerational trauma, before a big chat about that ending. Join us in the all the book chat over on our Insta, @theshamelessbookclub, and our TikTok, @theshamelessbookclub. Or, if you're after some variety, here's a link to record a voice message via our website, too. You can browse the eBook and audiobook versions of past book club picks in our room on Apple Books! Have a look-see right here. (You might spot our little baby, The Space Between, in the mix there, too.) Want to support our show? We are sending air kisses, air tea, and air hugs (too far?) to anyone who clicks ‘subscribe' on Apple (bonus hugs for anyone who leaves a five-star review, too) or ‘follow' on Spotify.  Still not enough? Grace Chan has created an online world called Gaia in which the people of 2080 take refuge from the climate ravaged earth. Gaia is clean, beautiful and exciting and it's just announced the opportunity for citizens to shake off their bodies entirely and permanently upload their consciousness to it. Gaia seems to have everything, but is it enough? And… Join Annie Hastwell's discussion with retired ABC Radio host Annie Warburton about Phillip Roth, the author whose book “Portnoy's Complaint” was considered so filthy in 1969 it was banned from being imported into Australia. The ensuing court battles helped define Australia's censorship laws and ensured an end to book bans in this country. Guests: Grace Chan, author of “Every Version of You” Annie Warburton and Annie Hastwell discuss Philip Roth's books “Portnoy's Complaint” (1969), “The Breast” (1972), “My Life as a Man” (1974), “The Human Stain” (2000), “The Plot Against America” (2004) and “Nemesis” (2010) Our Random reader: Mads Grace's tsundoku contains “Empathy” by Fay Lee, “Everything Feels Like the End of the World” by Else Fitzgerald, “Terminal Boredom” by Izumi Suzuki, “I'm waiting for You” by Bo-Young Kim and “Where the Stars Rise: Asian Science Fiction and Fantasy” edited by Lucas K. First time novelist Miranda Cowley Heller has written The Paper Palace, which joins 50 year old Elle as she steals away from a family holiday to have sex with her childhood crush for the first time, while her beloved husband is inside with the rest of her family. How can Elle choose between two equal but entirely different men? Miranda joins Richard and Judy to talk about how her own life inspired the story in a number of different ways – not least that she grew up in mesmerising Cape Cod where the book is set. They also discuss how Miranda wrote the entire novel not knowing herself what decision her protagonist was ultimately going to make. Miranda Cowley Heller joins Carol Fitzgerald for a “Bookaccino Live” Book Group program to discuss her debut novel, The Paper Palace. Please note that this program is full of spoilers, unlike our interview with Miranda last year, as yes, this is a book group discussion where we assume that everyone has read the book. Miranda talks about the depth of her characters and the need to see the situation through their eyes to grasp the complexity of their choices. She also talks about why she chose to write in first person and set a special timeframe. Debut novelists, Jo Browning Wroe and Miranda Cowley Heller go head to head in a war of the words... They discuss their books, "A Terrible Kindness" and "The Paper Palace" - as well as their writing journeys and inspirations. Miranda also discusses her former career at HBO - where she worked on shows such as The Sopranos and The Wire, whilst Jo explains how she came to the idea for her novel and how she approached such a sensitive subject. They also recommend some of the books they have been reading and enjoying recently - and pitch us a book that they both love in the Book Off. In this episode, we see J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord Of The Rings" go up against "A Manual For Cleaning Women" by Lucia Berlin...but which one will win??? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Hiya, book club besties! This month, we read the New York Times Number One Best Seller: The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller. The story's protagonist is Elle Bishop, a 50-something woman in love with two men - her husband, and her childhood best friend. As the blurb tells us, “so begins a story that unfolds over twenty four hours and across fifty years.” What is Elle's big secret - the one that has kept her tethered to, but arms distance from, her best friend Jonas? And which man will she choose in the end?Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle go everywhere: from standout characters, to the theme of intergenerational trauma, before a big chat about that ending.Got some thoughts on our January pick, ‘Love Stories' by Trent Dalton? Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Miranda Cowley Heller talks to Carol Fitzgerald about her debut novel, The Paper Palace, which was an instant #1 New York Times bestseller. Set on the Outer Cape of Cape Cod over the course of 24 hours, Elle must make a decision about whether to stay with her husband, Peter, or to leave her marriage for her childhood friend, Jonas. The book looks back over Elle's life and delves into moments, including one pivotal one, that will influence her decision. Miranda talks to Carol about how she came to write this book in her fifties after putting it aside almost a decade ago and the story's development. She talks about how her poetry background has influenced her writing. They discuss the cover, which has its own background in her family. Miranda is currently writing the script for the book's adaptation for HBO, a homecoming of sorts for her, as she worked as the head of programs at HBO, including "The Sopranos," "Six Feet Under," and "The Wire."
