This week's episode is the multi best selling Irish writer, John Boyne. You will almost certainly have read The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas or The Heart's Invisible Furies and the latest venture for John is a quarter of books which he's been releasing every six months. Next year, he'll release them in one compendium called The Elements. But hot on the heels of Water and Earth, comes Fire: a disturbing novella which looks at child sexual exploitation from the point of view of a female abuser of young boys. During our conversation, John explains that the idea for this quarter of books came after he himself was inspired to report his own abuse at the hands of one of his teachers to Police, following a high profile trial of a different abuser in Ireland.He hopes this book - whilst a work of fiction - might help others to come forward and report their abuse.Trigger Warning: Whilst this episode does not talk in detail about sexual abuse, there is conversation about John's first hand experience of abuse and the reporting process he went through. You may have noticed that most weeks in our ‘rapid fire' questions to featured authors, we ask if they have a favorite author. Little secret: Sometimes we are looking for ideas. A few weeks ago, John Irving told us he would read anything John Boyne has written just because Boyne wrote it. So we got busy reading John Boyne. It turns out he has a new book released just this past November, All the Broken Places, that is a continuation of sorts of a book released many years ago that was made into a terrific movie, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, that we both saw and admired. All the Broken Places centers around a now 91 year old woman who deals with the shame she feels knowing her father was commandant of Auschwitz, having tried to hide her past for decades. How that haunts her makes for an engrossing read. Thank you to John! When this podcast was in its infancy, John Irving joined us to talk about his work and what he described as “his last big novel,” that was, at the time, still being written. It is now “in better bookstores everywhere” as they say. And “big” is something of an understatement. “The Last Chairlift” is close to 900 pages! Is it worth that much an investment of time? If you're a John Irving admirer—how can you say no? And we are among John's many admirers. The novel has all of John's familiar themes: the search for an unknown father, sexual politics, a highly unusual family, ghosts as well as skiing, wrestling and Exeter Academy. John even includes a couple of screenplays as part of the story. Reading “The Last Chairlift” is a significant investment of time, but it is both moving and entertaining. This is our second conversation with John Irving, and he never fails to fascinate us. I’ve read 23/52 (Don’t worry, I know there are 50 states, I’m counting DC and Puerto Rico). I wanted to wait to submit a question until I was closer to finishing, but I’ve hit a slump on this challenge. Could you recommend books with a strong sense of place set in any of the states I’ve listed? I’m open to most genres, but my favorites are: historical fiction, literary fiction, travel/food writing, and SFF (which is hard for this challenge). I love stories that focus on intergenerational families, coming of age, subcultures, and female protagonists. My favorites so far have been Molokai for Hawaii and The Seed Keeper for Minnesota (thanks for posting that on your IG, Jenn!!!). Two series I loved are the Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier and the Samaria series by Sharon Shinn – fantasy romance where each book tells its own complete story and the successive books in the series stay in the same world but with a new cast of characters of the next generation. It’s the opposite of ending a book on a cliffhanger (WHICH I HATE) so it really works for me. Also want the series to be complete so I can binge read the whole thing at once. No YA please. This week, we sit down with, EJ Harper, scientist turned novelist!She grew up in the North East of England and left to go to university in Nottingham. Home is now a twelfth century mill in South West France.Who or what are your literary influences?For me, the most important aspect of a novel is the emotional journey. I want to shed tears of joy and tears of grief and am in awe of any author that can craft a story with a powerful emotional punch. Maggie O'Farrell's After You'd Gone is the perfect example of this; it tore me apart, as did the achingly beautiful Hamnet.Another emotion is, of course, surprise and there's nothing more delicious than a twist that leaves you reeling. Daphne du Maurier does this beautifully with Rebecca, and so does Sarah Waters with Fingersmith.I've also a soft spot for Irish writers and their wry observations on life; John Boyne's The Heart's Invisible Furies is just about the perfect novel and I unreservedly recommend it to everyone.Tell us about your writing careerI've always loved writing and, following a twenty-five year career in scientific research and communications, finally realised my life-long ambition to write a novel. Early in the process I decided to make it an audiobook complete with a soundtrack. Thus the idea for Lazarus Remembered, my debut novel, was conceived. I'm currently working on my second novel, a psychological drama set in France. I also write short stories and have twice been shortlisted in international competitions. What were the highlights of writing Lazarus RememberedThere were so many! From a writing perspective I remember wrestling with various plot strands and one day, while out walking, suddenly they fell into place. It was an extraordinary eureka moment.Working with Andy was a revelation. Seeing him take a musical phrase and turn it into a song was and is amazing. I still have no idea how he does it.I loved the time in the studio recording the narration, but a particular highlight is Francesca singing Sosban Fach.
