Bestselling thriller writer, Abigail Dean, joins Simon and Matt to discuss her latest novel, 'The Death Of Us' This has been an idea she's been thinking about for over a decade, but the timing hasn't been right to write it until recently. She talks about her inspirations and influences - and how she reacted to learning that Stephen King had read it! Here's a little more about the book: t's the story everyone wants to hear. That spring night in South London, when Isabel and Edward's lives were torn apart. The night Isabel learned that the worst things wait, just outside the door. The night Edward learned that he was powerless to stop them. The night they never talk about. When their attacker is caught, it's finally time to tell the story of that night. Not to the world. Or to the man who did it. But to each other. This is a story of murder. This is a story of survival. But most of all, this is a story of love. Learn more about your ad choices. The Death of Us by Abigail Dean. Isabel is a lead protagonist in this story, who throughout much of the book directly addresses the intruder who perpetrated a home invasion on her and her husband Edward when they were 30 years old and happily married, but those days are long gone. More than 20 years later, they reunite to attend the trial of a man finally charged with the crime, trying to reconcile their lives before, and after. This is gripping psychological drama. A Spy at War by Charles Beaumont. Simon Sharman is a former British spy gone rogue to track down the Chechen assassin who murdered his friend and business partner Evie. He's a man alone, but his friends and former colleagues in Whitehall are never far away and it turns out there's much more going on than his solitary pursuit of the bad guy – British intelligence has its fingers in several pies and it takes Simon a while to figure out his place in their schemes. Set amidst the war in Ukraine and the kind of news headlines we've seen for three years now, this story takes you right up close to some of the action and its commentary on US and European politics could be said to be prescient. It's terrific espionage and if, like me, you love David McCloskey and I.S.Berry, this one's for you. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stonesmere is an English seaside suburb defined by poignant traditions passed from generation to generation, and the bonds of small town community spirit. But when a lone gunman disrupts a school assembly, he sets of a chain of events that throws this close-kint town into turmoil. Marty is a golden girl, albeit one sometimes in the shadow of her father's accomplishments and the care of her mother—an outsider who became a beloved teacher. Meanwhile, Trent's home life is in the only child of a mother forever on the lookout for the boyfriend who can remake their lives, Trent longs for Stonesmere's stability. But he and his mother only pass through. In the wake of the violence in Stonesmere, Trent is transfixed by the news coverage of his former home, and his sense that something doesn't quite add up. As he dives deeper, he falls under the spell of a slick online media personality and the conspiracies he peddles. As Marty fumbles to play the part of the grieving good girl, she becomes the focus of these conspiracies—and Trent's attention. The Hidden Storyteller by Mandy Robotham The war is over. Posted to an Allied-run Hamburg, reporter Georgie Young returns to the country she fled seven years prior – as Chamberlain spoke those fateful words – to find it unrecognisable. STIG ABELL chats to Paul Burke about his new crime novel DEATH IN A LONELY PLACE, rural idyll as vest of Vipers, identity, writing a series, love of genre fiction and how crime fiction is a tonic for the soul.DEATH IN A LONELY PLACE In a quiet village, darkness is closing in…A rural paradise…Detective Jake Jackson moved to the countryside for a quieter life. And he finally seems to have his wish – spending his days immersed in nature, and his evenings lazing by the fire.A terrifying secret…But the return of an old case shatters the calm, and pulls him into the shadowy world of a secretive group serving the extravagant whims of the elite. An enemy closes in…As the web around Jake tightens, he must determine who he can really trust in his small community. Or else he will learn just how far the elite will go to protect their secrets.STIG ABELL believes that discovering a crime fiction series to enjoy is one of the great pleasures in life. His first novel, Death Under A Little Sky, introduced Jake Jackson and his attempt to get away from his former life in the beautiful area around Little Sky. This book is the second in the series, and Stig is absolutely delighted that there are more on the way. Away from books, he co-presents the breakfast show on Times Radio, a station he helped to launch in 2020. Day One by Abigail Dean. Set in the Lake District of England, this is about a school shooting and its aftermath. A local school is putting on an annual performance by the older kids, designed to make the four year olds who will start school in the autumn feel comfortable and keen to begin their education – but it all goes horribly wrong, and the way it plays out afterwards is a real sign of the times. A young man with connections to the town becomes convinced that it never happened, while the daughter of one of the teachers killed in the tragedy has a version of events that seems at odds with some of the evidence. It's a sobering premise which I think is probably drawn from recent world events such as the Sandy Hook massacre in the States, after which a denier called Alex Jones claimed it was all made up and peddled gross misinformation. Run for Your Life by Sue Williams. Nick Stride is an Englishman who moved to Russia in 1998 to work on the construction of a new British Embassy in Moscow, and then later on a palatial new home for one of Putin's sidekicks, a guy named Shuvalov. He fell afoul of them and he and his family (wife, two kids) increasingly feared for their lives and moved half way around the world to Australia where they went completely off the grid, staying on illegally after their visas expired and spending years in the remote Kimberley which must be one of the most inhospitable places on earth. They eventually decided to hand themselves in but the callous indifference of the Australian immigration authorities made reintegration to mainstream society extremely difficult. Nick and his children ended up here in New Zealand where I believe they still live, and feel it's the right time to tell their incredible story. Kto sa naučil žiť s traumatickou minulosťou a kto ju nikdy neprekonal? Lex Gracieová prežila kruté detstvo. Sadistickí rodičia ju aj jej piatich súrodencov neprestajne týrali, držali v dome o hlade, zväzovali reťazami, zamykali potme v špinavých nevykúrených izbách so zatemnenými oknami. In this episode of Lessons I Learned in Law Scott Brown speaks to Abigail Dean. Abigail is legal counsel at Google as well as author of Sunday Times and New York Times best-selling novel Girl A, which was published in January 2021. Abigail has always loved reading and writing and discusses how her law career has helped shape her career as a successful author. She also shares three lessons she learned in law including:Consider the importance of words, and the impact that your choice of words and pronunciation can have on your writing. You will require a tolerance to boredom, as many jobs will include elements that you mind find uninteresting. All you can do is work on the ratio.Law is good for teaching you that you can do hard and difficult things, and they will rarely be as frightening as you imagine. Abigail's choice for Room 101 is the legal profession's tendency to aggrandize certain members of staff; something she finds very unhelpful.Presented by Scott Brown of Heriot Brown Legal Recruitment.Follow Heriot Brown:Twitter | LinkedIn | Facebook | InstagramThis episode of Lessons I Learned in Law is brought to you by Beamery.Beamery is an AI-powered talent platform, designed to hire candidates faster, develop the skills of your workforce, and increase employee retention.Find out more at Beamery.com
Summary: On this episode of Propcast, Louisa speaks with Jeanne Casey and Jacinda Lofland from Nuveen Real Estate. They talk about what led them to the innovation, sustainability and technology space at one of the largest real estate investment managers globally. Jeanne and Jacinda explain what works in creating a diverse and inclusive powerful team, and how to avoid the issue of tokenism. They elaborate on needing strategy and investment decisions and how ESG, technology and community play a part in all of it. I have been in venture capital for over 10 years. Half of that time I have focussed on PropTech and most recently at MetaProp. I started my investing career in FinTech at Morgan Stanley in the early 2010s and then I worked at a fund that spun out of Cisco. We were investing in digital infrastructure, including smart cities and IOT and that's what led me to PropTech. [02:55] Jacinda, can you tell us about your journey? I started out at PwC and I worked mostly on commercial real estate clients. My first time with Tiaa was back in 2013 and I did commercial mortgage originations as well as equity investments on the West Coast. I moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina and was the first finance hire for Remote Year. I worked for Selina for about 10 months after that. After that, I came back to Nuveen where my focus is customers, community and the experience of our end users as well as engaging around ESG. [06:30] Jeanne, what do you think can be done to attract more diversity to this space? The crux of the issue is around retaining, promoting and genuinely empowering diverse talent that's already within the organisation. [07:20] What is Nuveen doing in terms of their hiring? Jeanne and I sit on the Insights Team which is led by Abigail Dean and that team includes our research team, sustainability, PropTech, Customers & Communication and Innovation. [09:40] There is a lot of women leadership at Nuveen, what do you think can be done to increase this? I think it's beyond just attracting and recruiting diverse talent. It is about retaining, promoting and empowering the talent that already sits within an organisation. Our DEI initiatives are more genuine and actually reflect what our teams look like. [11:45] Jacinda, you are from more of a real estate side, what have you seen in terms of diversity and inclusion? We're making meaningful progress. There have been a lot of reports around the benefits of diversity. Implicit bias training has been a really important step for us. It's important to hire outside of the same sets of colleges that might have strong, finance or real estate programs. [19:50] Is there anything more you want to delve into about what you've seen in the more VC (corporate side), or within the startups? I've seen a lot of genuine improvement over the decade. I've always been at the intersection of finance and technology and both of those are historically very male dominated, very white dominated and a little bit older. I think that's largely, or at least in the process of changing quite a bit. Boardrooms and investment teams look quite a bit different than when I started just 10 years ago. [19:10] Talk us through the focus for 2022. Our tomorrow's world strategy, there are three key things that we focus on; sustainability, technology and demographics. We have what we call a smart, sustainable building blueprint (SSBB) and there are a number of categories that we think really tied to those three overarching themes; energy, water, waste, resilience, health, and wealth, tenants & community, leasing and data & digitalisation. We want to build on our partnership with Fitwell. We'll be launching a VC strategy in the coming months. The two, overarching themes are; a data strategy and tools and new technologies that help unlock our own proprietary data across our massive portfolio. the intersection of sustainability and ESG with PropTech [27:40] What do you think the industry could do better as a whole to move things forward in terms of adoption/integration? Incentives alignment is an area that is still fairly nebulous. Cascading goals around our own compensation targets that are specifically tied to sustainability and innovation goals. Rethinking how our buildings work, but also rethinking how we work. [31:40] The ‘LMRE' part, Louisa asks the guests to talk about: Lessons learned in your career Jeanne: Throw out for a 5- or 10-year plan. Mention a person, product or service Jacinda: Our asset management teams and then the properties that sign up and do pilots. Cushman & Wakefield and Industrious Office Rewarding parts of working in the space: Jeanne: I love real estate and PropTech because I love seeing the tangible impacts on the ways that people work, live and spend all of our time. What are you most Excited about for the future of the space?: Jacinda: Data Standardisation and Climate Tech. Perris, California. January 14, 2018. Few cases are as chilling as that of the Turpin family. Regardless of where you live, you likely remember this story dominating national, and even international news, in January 2018. The photos splashed across our television screens were designed to project an image of a big, happy family. But something just feels off about the photos, something you can't immediately put your finger on. The reality could not have been further from what parents David and Louise Turpin, were attempting to convey in those photos. When the story broke of what was really going on behind closed doors in their southern California home, those who got the impression that something just wasn't quite right had their feelings confirmed. It was all a charade, put on to mask the reality of how depraved human beings can be. While this case is not one of murder, I would certainly classify it as true crime.Instagram: @talkmurderwithmeFacebook: @talkmurrderwithmeBuy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/talkmurderI highly recommend the novel Girl A by Abigail Dean, which is loosely based on this case.Episode sources:Turpin case - WikipediaLouise Turpin's Sister Talks Childhood Before House of Horrors | PEOPLE.comHouse of Horrors Aunt Opens Up About Louise Turpin's PastCalifornia couple accused of torturing their children had North Texas tiesInside the Texas home where the malnourished, shackled siblings lived over 18 years agoTurpin case: Shackled California siblings 'victims of torture'Turpin: Shackled siblings found in Perris, California homeTurpin case: California couple deny torturing 'shackled siblings'California family: Parents charged after children found shackled13 captive siblings forced to shower once a year, strangled, subject to frequent beatings: Prosecutor13 siblings, some shackled and malnourished, rescued from California houseBefore police rescued their 13 children, the two parents had a history of strange behavior, family and neighbors sayAunts of 13 captive children reveal years of secrecy and concernsAirfares, fancy clothes and lavish meals: How the Turpins kept their evil secretCalifornia torture house: Louise Turpin's sister said sibling experimented with religion, sexGrandparents say 'God called' on Perris couple to have so many childrenDavid and Louise Turpin case: A timeline of parental torture and abusePerris parents, accused of torturing 13 kids, dreamed of a reality show about their family, reports sayDavid Turpin's Sister-in-Law Says He Would Watch Her in the Shower, Wouldn't Let Her Contact KidsSouthern California torture case: Outline of accusations against Turpin parentsCaptive teen's chilling 911 call details parents' alleged torture: 'My two little sisters right now are chained up''I've never been out': Chilling 911 call reveals abuse in Turpin familyTurpin siblings: Judge bars parents from contacting 13 children in torture caseTurpin parents sentenced to life in prison for torturing childrenTurpin children speak out as parents are sentenced in torture case: 'I'm taking my life back'Eldest Turpin Children Discharged from Hospital in What Attorney Describes as 'Birth Into Real World'Turpin children 'working toward forgiveness' of parents in California torture caseCan anyone open a school at home in California?California torture case raises questions about home school regulationThe Twisted Psychology Behind the Turpin Family CaseAs a forensic psychologist, this is why I think the Turpins may have held their children captiveInside Turpin family's Disney trips: kids wore same outfits each time | World | News | Express.co.ukDavid Turpin charged with 8 counts of perjuryTurpin trial: Couple jailed for life for 'inhuman' child abuseThe Quiverfull: The evangelical Christians opposed to contraceptionMusic from Purple Planet MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/talk-murder-with-me/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Aunque nadie en su entorno lo sabe, la protagonista fue años atrás la Chica Uno, la única que logró escapar para pedir ayuda de la casa de los horrores donde sus padres tenían prisioneros a sus seis hijos. A bidding war, a screen adaptation by the director who made “Chernobyl” - and now, a place on the bestseller lists. What a whirlwind few months it has been for Abigail Dean and her debut novel, Girl A, which documents the aftermath of the horrific abuse the narrator, Lex (aka ‘Girl A') endured at the hand of her father. Obviously, I was thrilled to interview her - the book is unbelievably gripping, and Abigail herself has a fascinating story, having worked as a lawyer for her 20s before deciding to pursue her literary ambitions. She's now back to working in law again, while also writing, and I loved hearing about how doing those two different things helps her process - as well as how she cures writer's block and how on earth she went from unknown to wildly successful author so quickly. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Buy the book: https://www.waterstones.com/book/girl-a/abigail-dean/2928377050276 Twitter: @aliceazania / @abigailsdean Edited by Chelsey Moore

Here is a quick blurb about it: When Jake was in ninth grade he discovered a mysterious portal while on a field trip that was going in a flash but the image never left his memory. Now, in 1997, Jake is about to start his Junior year at the State University of New York (SUNY) New Paltz when he meets Beth. I also just wanted to encourage you to make God your top priority this year and to make it a habit to seek him every day. I also wanted to remind you that Jesus loves you! And nothing you can ever do can change that:) He will never leave you, his got your back! Much love, Rumbi ❝ We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. ❞ — 1 John 4:19-21
