As he supported his wife Giulia through psychotic episodes and grueling hospital stays, International Bestselling author Mark Lukach's world was completely upended. He dedicated his waking life to supporting her and first imagined his unconditional love would solve everything.  But Lukach learned an important lesson during those times that is especially poignant as the country acknowledges National Mental Health Awareness Month: You have to take care of yourself — mentally, emotionally and physically — in order to care for someone else. “Twelve years ago when Giulia got sick, the conversations about self care were really quiet and sort of hidden in the closet,” Lukach said, “and thankfully I feel like there's a lot more around that. I'm glad I can be another voice encouraging people to take care of themselves as they face their own traumas in their lives and lean on the people who they love to get through them.” Lukach, an educator and author of the International Bestselling book ‘My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward' is the latest guest of “The Whole Student” podcast, a show hosted by Lukach's former colleague in the classroom, Dunn Head of School Kalyan Balaven. Lukach spoke about the teachers who have influenced him over the years, including the 10th-grade English teacher, Mr. Jordan, who inspired his love of writing — by challenging him with his first and only poor grade.

I'm a Blubrry affiliate, but that's not the only reason I'm telling you this. I've been using Blubrry Podcasting as my hosting service for my podcast for years and it's one of the best decisions I ever made. They give great customer service, you're in complete control of your own podcast, you can run it from your own website, and it just takes a lot of the work out of podcasting for me. I find for that reason that it's a company that I can get behind 100% and say, “You should try this.” Try Blubrry. It doesn't require a long-term contract, and it's just a great company, period. It also has free technical support by email, video, and phone, so you can get a human being there. Isn't that nice? If you want to podcast, try out Blubrry. No long-term contract, excellent distribution, and great technical support, too, by email, video, and on the phone. I've included an affiliate link on this blog. Here's a link to a PDF copy of the interview. Debbi: Hi, everyone. Our guest today recently released her third novel. It's called FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, and has been optioned by a production company to be adapted into, I suppose, an HBO Max series. We'll have to talk about that to the extent it can be talked about. Her first novel, MY LOVELY WIFE, has been nominated for multiple awards, and is also under option to be adapted for the screen. She lives and works in New Orleans, a place that I've always wanted to visit, but have not gotten around to yet. I am pleased to have with me Samantha Downing. Hi Sam, how are you doing today? Samantha: I'm good. Thank you for having me. Debbi: Well, thank you for being here. I really, really appreciate it. The setting of your latest book reminds me of an interview I just did with another author who was an educator. And her comment to me was that she was surprised that more authors didn't set their books in schools because they're like microcosms of society. And my thought was it's like a small town. What are your thoughts on that? Samantha: Absolutely. I think there's a... In this book, in FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, there's a number of social structures that exist within the school. There is the structure between the teachers themselves. This is a private school where the kids are all wealthy. The parents pay the bills. And some of the teachers are wealthy, some of them are not. And there is a structure between the parents and the teachers. The parents pay the bills and are the donors to the school, so they think they can tell the teachers what to do. And then there are the students who drive better cars than the teachers. So, the money and the wealth and the entitlement has a lot to do with the story itself. The protagonist, or one of the main characters, is Teddy Crutcher, who is not wealthy and lives on a teacher's salary, and that is something that really drives him and his actions in the book. In this book, in FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, there's a number of social structures that exist within the school. Debbi: I was going to say,

When the pandemic altered nearly every part of daily life, we wondered what it would mean for those struggling, for those currently fighting to stay alive. A mental health crisis already existed and the pandemic only made it more glaringly obvious. The collective trauma and loss nearly doubled the number of people having thoughts of suicide and experiencing depression compared to previous years.   One bright spot, a moment of tragic optimism, is that this shared experience made talking about mental health almost a normal part of everyday life. We were surprised to see moments where the polite, “How are you?” was not expected to be met with an unassuming “fine.”   Over the course of the next few episodes, in honor of TWLOHA's Another Day With You campaign and World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th, we want to use this space to have conversations that challenge the lie that says we can't or shouldn't talk about suicide. We want to share real-life experiences as they relate to suicide attempts, loss, and ideation. For today's episode, we're joined by Ashley Holstrom, who is talking about the latter: suicidal ideation. As you'll find out in more detail, suicidal ideation has been a part of Ashley's existence as far back as she can remember. And for her, she describes the thoughts as passive rather than active; she thinks these thoughts but has no plan to act on them. They are a “passive wish to no longer exist.”   Ashley is a professional book person, designing for an indie publisher and writing for Book Riot. She's an advocate for mental health, reads any book about mental illness she can get her hands on, and wrote an essay about trichotillomania (compulsive hair-pulling) for the young adult anthology (Don't) Call Me Crazy. #PodcastersForJustice Internationally bestselling thriller author, Samantha Downing, took a break to chat about her "20-year, overnight" success, writing psychopaths, and how to write a novel in six months. Samantha's debut novel, My Lovely Wife – about a married couple teaming up to commit murder – was a #1 international bestseller that earned Edgar and ITW Thriller Award nominations and an Amazon Best Thriller of the Month selection. Her latest bestseller, psychological thriller, For Your Own Good, has been called “A perfect summer book,” by NPR and described as "...a twisted and compulsively readable spin on the teacher-student relationship." New York Times bestselling author B.A. Paris called it, a "... wonderfully dark, twisty and compelling thriller set in a prestigious private school." And the book has been recently optioned by Robert Downey Jr. and Greg Berlanti for a series adaptation at HBO Max. Stay calm and write on ... And Stay Tuned: I'm cooking up some extras for fans of the show in the coming weeks you won't want to miss including the option to have episodes, extras, and added insights delivered straight to your inbox, and maybe even some Writer Files merch on the way. If you're a fan of The Writer Files, please "Follow" us to automatically see new interviews. In this file Samantha Downing and I discussed: Why she chose to showcase the insular world of an elite private school as the setting for her latest How psychopaths tend to hide in plain sight Her unique creative process and how she cranks out pages Why there are stacks of unfinished manuscripts she never goes back to And why writers need to love the craft and be ready when opportunity knocks Show Notes: SamanthaDowning.com For Your Own Good by Samantha Downing Samantha Downing Amazon author page A Sickness Spreads, A Parent Dies, And A Mystery Unfolds In 'For Your Own Good' – NPR Samantha Downing on Facebook Samantha Downing on Instagram Kelton Reid on Twitter

Thriller writer Sharon Doering may have grown up in a nice suburban neighborhood just outside Chicago, with normal parents, who worked normal jobs, while living a normal life. And even though Sharon is a wife, mother of three children, and does most all the normal things an American housewife does, she has been getting away with murder. Writing about murder, of course. Join Sharon and me for some hilarious moments, as we discuss her nearly perverse love of dark humor, pages of hot 'n steamy sex (in the book), and a fistful of dark, twisted, and broken characters with whom she hangs out. With a Master's degree in biotechnology, this former science professor and stock analyst, has turned her craft of writing stock reports to crafting psychological thrillers. If you need any more persuasion as to her talents, check these few testimonial endorsements: “Somewhere between OZARK and SHARP OBJECTS, there is Sharon Doering's CONFESS TO ME." – Samantha Downing, Sunday Times bestselling author of My Lovely Wife and He Started It“Brilliant, vicious and wildly compulsive, CONFESS TO ME is a masterpiece of a thriller.” – PJ Vernon, author of Bath HausSharon Doering arrives on the mystery scene with an explosive, darkly comedic thriller that belongs on every to read list." — Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of The Other Mrs.Learn more about Sharon at SharonDoering.com and feel free to follow her on Twitter @SharonJDoering.

Six Weeks to Live By Catherine McKenzie Website: https://gobookmart.com “Just when you think you know what's happening…there's a new twist, a new piece of information, a new direction. Unpredictable and captivating, Six Weeks to Live had me mesmerized right up to the shocking end.” —Samantha Downing, bestselling author of My Lovely Wife and He Started It “Six Weeks to Live begins with a devastating premise, then takes the reader on the most unexpected ride as a mother seeks to uncover the truth about the illness that is about to take her life. With skillful plotting and flawless narration, McKenzie weaves together past and present in this twisty, page-turning and, ultimately, heartbreaking novel. Thoroughly enjoyable!” —Wendy Walker, bestselling author of Don't Look for Me "Every time I open the covers on a Catherine McKenzie novel, I know I'm in for a ride. Six Weeks to Live proves my theory right yet again. With its impeccable plotting and ticking clock, it is the best kind of domestic suspense—a story both heartbreaking and visceral, surprising yet inevitable. Jennifer and her triplets will shock you from start to finish." —JT Ellison, New York Times bestselling author of Her Dark Lies and Good Girls Lie “Telling a multi-layered story is not easy, but Catherine McKenzie does it with ease, without revealing too much and letting the reader guess what is to come.” —Mystery and Suspense Magazine “A twisty tale of secrets and lies that reverberate across generations of a dysfunctional family. The Last Thing He Told Me: Book By Laura Dave “Laura Dave's The Last Thing He Told Me is a thrilling roller coaster of a novel. This smart, intimate exploration of love and family is the foundation of a beautifully constructed mystery filled with twists and turns. A must-read.” — Jean Kwok, New York Times bestselling author of Searching for Sylvie Lee “Dave pulls off something that feels both new and familiar: a novel of domestic suspense that unnerves, then reassures. This is the antithesis of the way novels like Gone Girl or My Lovely Wife are constructed; in The Last Thing He Told Me, the surface is ugly, the situation disturbing, but almost everyone involved is basically good underneath it all. Dave has given readers what many people crave right now—a thoroughly engrossing yet comforting distraction.” — BookPage “A page turner.” — Associated Press “The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave is a fast-moving, heartfelt thriller about the sacrifices we make for the people we love most.” — Real Simple website: https://gobookmart.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

A book club win for kids, a book train with friends, and strong opinions about a bookish movie. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. There’s some serious gushing over books in this week’s titles, plus a couple “I didn’t like this” strong opinions. Hold onto your earbuds. We are doing a brief Slow But Steady check-in this week to let you know what we’re choosing for our next reads for this challenge. For our deep dive this week, we are playing around with book pairings for TV shows that we’ve enjoyed in the past. We each chose two shows to dive deep into and then find ways to replicate some of those same feelings in our reading. What fun! Hey there word nerds! Today’s episode is extra-awesome because I’m speaking with not one, not two, but three fabulous ladies, who have had hand in bringing a truly buzz-worthy novel to life, on the show! First we have author Samantha Downing, whose debut novel My Lovely Wife has been getting a lot of attention. When she was a kid, Samantha’s mom brought her to the library every two weeks, where she would check out a stack of new books that she couldn’t put it down. She walked around with a book in front of her face, often walking into walls and stubbing her toes because she never watched where she was going. In her adult life she decided she wanted to be the one telling stories that would make people walk into walls and My Lovely Wife, is one such book. Next we have Samantha’s agent Barbara Poelle who began her publishing career as a freelance copywriter and editor before joining the Irene Goodman Literary Agency in 2007. Barbara also did a brief stint as a standup comic in Los Angeles and if you’ve ever bumped into her at a conference or literary event, you know she is hilarious. Barbara has found success placing thrillers, suspense, young adult and upmarket fiction, She is actively seeking her next great client in those genres, but is passionate about anything with a unique voice. Jen Monroe is the editor behind this fabulous book. She joined Berkley in November 2016 and edits psychological suspense, upmarket fiction, speculative fiction, and narrative nonfiction. Previously, Jen spent two years at HarperAudio where she handled all editorial needs, and produced the in-house podcast HarperAudio Presents. Jen also pursued journalism interning for places including The New York Times and The San Francisco Examiner. So listen as Samantha, Barbara, Jen and I chat about the amazing novel MY LOVELY WIFE, and the teamwork involved between an author, agent, editor to bring a book into the world. In this episode Samantha, Barbara, Jen and I discuss: The matchmaking experience of publishing. Why communication is vital to a successful author-agent-editor relationship. Crafting an unreliable narrator while still maintaining your readers’ trust. Advice to help navigate disagreements in the editorial process. The most important thing querying writers need to know. Plus, each of these lovely ladies’ #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: DIYMFA.com/245

Guest: Mark Lukach is a teacher and freelance writer. His work has been published in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Pacific Standard, Wired, and other publications. He is currently the ninth grade dean at The Athenian School, where he also teaches history. He lives with his wife, Giulia, and their son in the San Francisco Bay area. His latest book, a heart-wrenching memoir, is called My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward. Mark first wrote about Giulia in a New York Times “Modern Love” column and again in a piece for Pacific Standard Magazine, which was the magazine’s most-read article in 2015.Story: During his freshman year in college, Mark spotted the love of his life across the quad and immediately knew he would spend the rest of his life with her. They became inseparable: they graduated together, married, and began building an exquisite life with dreams, hopes and expectations. Until one day he came home to find his lovely wife living in a radically different world – a state that he now knows to be deep psychosis. Staying profoundly committed to each other, Mark and Giulia learned to navigate the challenging times and rebuild their lives and their family.Big Idea: In today’s world of the "ideal life", as portrayed by social media, people yearn to be open and vulnerable, and have authentic conversations about what they are going through. They are desperate for deep human-to-human connection without trying to pretend that things are better. You’d never guess: How Mark and Giulia, as a couple, came up with a plan to deal with potential future psychotic relapses without totally disrupting their lives.Current passion project: Mark works as a 9th Grade Dean, helping families with the transition from middle school to high school.Rockstar Sponsors: Audible has the best audiobook performances, the largest library, and the most exclusive content. Today on the show we have Mark Lunkach. Mark is the author of international bestseller, My Lovely Wife in the Psyche Ward: a vulnerable personal story inspired by his wife Julia. Mark and Julia fell madly in love at 18, they got married and started living their dream in San Francisco. But some years later, Julia unexpectedly had a psychotic break, which landed her in a psyche ward for nearly a month and over the next few years, they both struggled with what was bipolar, depression, suicide and a lot of uncertainty and difficulty in their life and in their marriage. Mark managed his feelings by writing this book, My Lovely Wife in the Psyche Ward and above all, it is a conversation about loyalty, love, commitment and how to handle the challenges of mental illness, which many people struggle to talk about. In today's episode mark shares his authentic story; delving deep into the gift of vulnerability, the resentments of caregiving, and ultimately the perseverance of love. Take a listen to this compelling conversation.
