From Eric / @ericanthonyjohnson: I was born in Essexville, Michigan. Almost instantly, I had the power to destroy everything that came into my path; carpets, rugs, bottles of milk, you name it, I had somehow found a way to make it my own, or change it into something that meant more. Now I use the word destroy because that is exactly what I did, something that was once a simple coffee table meant more, to my 3 year old self, having my name carved into. Mother was not pleased with this "process." So, I was enrolled in gymnastics, then dance, then the community theater. For as we all know, play practice and rehearsal are cheaper than daycare. It is then that my addiction started. I was obsessed with everything that happened on a stage--dance, drama, singing, the occasional rollerblading/acrobatic routine... I simply could not get enough. In fact, my father built me a stage in our basement (which still exists). So, this was my life until I was 18 and carried my obsession to Boston, where I attended The Boston Conservatory to get my BFA in Musical Theatre performance. It was during my time at The Boston Conservatory where I realized that these hobbies I had growing up would become my livelihood. It's pretty great when you actually get to do what you love for a living. So, 4 years of college later, I set off to New York City, to try and make "The Dream" happen. It was in my first month of being in the city that I got an audition for the the revival of West Side Story that was already out on tour. I auditioned, had a callback, then another, and made it to the last day. Two weeks went by and I got a call that changed my life--I would be going on tour for the next year playing one of the Sharks and understudying some of the Jets! Cut to a few... uhhhh, several years later, and I've completed 5 Broadway tours, and will do a 6th later this year, countless regional gigs, I've worked with TONY winners, EMMY winners, been around the world, danced for hundreds of thousands of people, and somehow turned my experiences into an ever-changing teaching and choreography career. Now, I'm not done, and I don't intend to ever be done, but that's where I come from, and where I'm at now. I cannot speak for the future, but I think it will be the same thing that has been true the whole time--I will do awesome shit. Eric Anthony Berdis shared his story of finding refuge and courage in art. He talked about imagining a queer space and how he creates that imagined space. He also spoke about the idea of being a parallel player alongside his young students and his continual work to move away from facilitator or director in the classroom. I loved hearing about his process and all the research behind his work. I also loved how he is able to incorporate play and whimsy among all the references and context that goes into his work. If you can, take a look at his work while you listen! As a queer maker, Eric Anthony Berdis (Erie, PA) continuously finds ways to imagine and embody joy through his practice. Navigating the new normal as an elementary school teacher, and studio artist working. He finds himself working in the hours from 5-11 pm. His work embraces a maximalist aesthetic of archival research, personal secrets, and pubescent gay boy glamour. Entering their installation, the audience is transported to a new world. Thrift store castoffs and hobbyist craft supplies are reassembled into a cast of characters that blur the lines between ghost, creature, and friend. For Eric, the studio becomes a haven in periods of instability, insecurity, and oppression. Happiness, play, and pleasure are not only sought after during difficult times but are arguably necessary components of survival. Joy is an act of resilience—a critical method of subverting hegemonic narratives of suffering. Queer joy in Eric's work is found through forms of exuberance such as world-building, materials, and escaping into new types of textile processes like quilting. Eric is a teacher of preschoolers. In his classroom, he tries to become a parallel and collaborative player in his students' activities. Hoping to not only build a deeper connection to students but also support their development in a way that is true to their interests. They have received their MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Eric has exhibited work at the University Galleries of Illinois State University, Stay Home Gallery, Paris TN, and Bunker Projects, Pittsburgh. His work has been published in Hiss Mag, Emergency Index, and American Painting. Eric Anthony Johnson is a native of New Orleans and has worked and studied throughout the country, but the new president of Minneapolis-based affordable housing developer Aeon is no stranger to Minnesota. Johnson, who starts his job as president and CEO of Aeon on Feb. 8, earned a Master of Public Administration degree from Minnesota State University-Mankato in 1996 and later embarked on a career path that included a stop in Bloomington. As Bloomington's director of community development from 2018 to 2020, Johnson oversaw the creation of the city's inclusionary housing policy and a $15 million affordable housing trust fund. The fund helped Aeon acquire and preserve 306 affordable homes. In his most recent job as chief of economic development, housing, and neighborhood services for the city of Dallas, Johnson led efforts to create a $100 million affordable housing fund. An alumnus of the Harvard University Advanced Management Development Program in Real Estate, Johnson earned an MBA from the University of Tennessee, and a Ph.D. in Urban Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Delaware. Johnson succeeds Alan Arthur, who started his run as president and CEO in 1988 – two years after Aeon's founding. The nonprofit developer, owner and manager of affordable housing now serves more than 16,000 people each year at 5,800 homes. In the following interview, Johnson talks about his career path, his new role with Aeon, and the big-picture challenges and opportunities related to the construction of affordable housing in Minnesota.
