Shortly after her murder Parcell's fiancé was arrested, but not on charges relating to her murder. Parcell had also been involved in a contentious custody battle with the father of her child. Eventually an arrest was made for the murder of Christine Parcell but it was not her not her fiancé or the father of her child. There will be no new double murder trial for Alex Murdaugh, despite the fact that one juror says her vote was influenced by comments made by Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill. According to the Juror Z, “She made it seem like he was already guilty.” Hill allegedly made comments such as "watch him closely" and "watch his body language." During Juror Z's testimony, she was asked by Judge Jean Toal if her verdict based entirely on the testimony, evidence, and law presented in this case. The juror answered yes. She was also asked if she heard Becky Hill make any comment about this case before your verdict. Again Juror Z answered yes, and that the comments influenced her decision. Prosecutor Creighton Waters that in her affidavit the juror had responded that, "I voted guilty because I felt pressure by the other jurors." After hearing all the testimony, Judge Toal ruled that the defense did not show that Hill's improper comment or question actually influenced the juror's verdict. Alex Murdaugh's three-day evidentiary hearing takes place later this month. The hearings will held in open court and court-controlled television cameras will be allowed. They cannot, however, focus on the faces of testifying jurors, who will be referred to by their juror numbers, not their names. The hearing will determine whether Murdaugh will be granted a new murder trial, after his attorneys, alleged jury tampering by Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca “Becky” Hill. Former S.C. Chief Justice Jean Toal is now the judge hearing the case. She took control of her South Carolina courtroom -, making several rulings affecting Alex Murdaugh's bid. His attorneys say jury tampering by Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill impacted the original trial's outcome, and that according to Toal, will be the defense's burden to prove. The attorneys argued the law only required them to prove improper contact with jurors had occurred. Toal says she will rule that, “Prejudice must be proved, not presumed.” Toal says the stand she will take on the specific evidence of ”what was said, when it was said, and how it impacted the jury,” lies with the defense, not an assumption on Becky Hill's credibility. Toal told the courtroom that she would not allow the upcoming evidentiary hearing to turn into a trial of Becky Hill. Becky Hill is facing her own ongoing ethics and criminal investigations related to her conduct during and after the Murdaugh trial. The judge says she intends to limit the witness list to the twelve deliberating jurors and Becky Hill. An alternate juror and Juror 785, now known as the “egg lady” due to her insistence that she retrieve a dozen eggs from the jury room before leaving the courthouse, will not be allowed to testify. Toal says she sees “no necessity” to hear from anyone other than the (deliberating) jurors.” What's more, Toal says she will be the one asking the questions. The Murdaugh Murders, Money & Mystery | Unsolved South Carolina
State investigators have found evidence linking a Colleton County government wiretapping scandal involving Jeffrey Hill to a public ethics complaint against his mother, the county's elected clerk of court, Becky Hill.In this episode, former S.C. Attorney General Charlie Condon tells hosts Anne Emerson and Drew Tripp how the ethics complaint and attacks on Hill's character might impact a potential retrial for convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh. BACKGROUND: The date of the wiretapping incident involving Jeffrey Hill came in late July 2023, about a month after someone filed an ethics complaint against his mother with the State Ethics Commission.Becky Hill's county-issued cell phone was confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation. A public corruption investigation tied to the wiretapping incident has now been escalated to the S.C. Attorney General's Office. The original ethics complaint against Becky Hill, dated June 2023, alleges that during the Murdaugh murder trial and afterward, she "utilized her authority, the Colleton County Courthouse and taxpayer's money outside the scope of routine court business."In documents dated August 2023 reported by FITSNews, Hill categorically denies many of the allegations made in the original June 26 ethics complaint, and alleges other accusations have been crafted to exclude important context and other details to intentionally make her actions appear nefarious.MORE: Source says Colleton wiretapping & corruption probe linked to court clerk ethics complaintSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Will Alex Murdaugh get a new trial? So far the possibility is up in the air, as allegations of jury tampering have been levied against Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca (Becky) Hill. Hill has denied any wrongdoing. At the same time Hill's son, Jeff, has been arrested and is facing charges related to wiretapping. SLED agents accuse Jeff Hill of illegally recording conversations of deputy county administrator Meagan Utse. She served as a liaison between the county and the court during the Murdaugh murder trial. Jeffrey Hill is the technology director at Colleton County Administration. New information is also coming in on the death of Stephen Smith. The 19-year-old was found lying in the middle of the road. His car was found three miles away. The coroner's office ruled the death a hit-and-run. After having her son's body exhumed and a new autopsy performed, we learn Smith was killed by blunt force trauma. Disbarred attorney Alex Murdaugh is set to appear before a judge again. The convicted killer has been indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of bank fraud, a total of five counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and 14 counts of money laundering. The indictment alleges that while an attorney, Murdaugh came up with three schemes to take money and property from his clients. If convicted on the federal charges, 480 more years could be added to his current sentence. Fines could exceed $13 million. That's not all of Alex Murdaugh's legal woes. He will soon be deposed in a high-profile wrongful death suit against him. The family of Mallory Beach filed suit in connection with the March 2019 death of Beach in a boating crash. The body of Stephen Smith has been exhumed, autopsied and reinterred. A SLED security team accompanied the body to a location in Florida where the examination took place. Information on the new autopsy has not be released yet. Meanwhile, news of two possible persons of interest has come to light. Investigation into those leads are continuing. Stephen Smith's body was discovered on a rural road in Hampton county back in 2015. Just 2-weeks ago the South Carolina law enforcement division announced they are now investigating Smith's death as a homicide. Smith's death was initially investigated as a hit-and-run but investigators say the evidence did not support that as a cause of death. Stephen Smith's family is close to answers about his death as attorneys work to get approved to exhume Smith's body. Smith's death was originally designated a hit-and-run, but something uncovered in the Alex Murdaugh double-murder investigation prompted the South Carolina Highway Patrol to reopen the investigation. Crime scene photos have been released by SLED and some graphic crime scene photos were leaked. What can we learn from them? Also, new information has been released concerning a rape kit reportedly performed on Smith during his autopsy. Where is it now?
