Episode 422: The Crew's getting some ink while watching David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. This Russian mob film set in London, despite dealing with people and locations we usually don't see in mob films, feels surprisingly familiar. Cronenberg's horror body is limited to onscreen violence and tattoos. The Crew discusses… If you like our music intro, head over to Soundcloud and hear more amazing music from aquariusweapon. On this episode of Face2Face, David Peck sits down with legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg and acclaimed costume designer Anne Dixon to explore their haunting new film The Shrouds. We dive into grief, storytelling, and the power of collaboration—from Dixon's sculptural approach to costume design to Cronenberg's reflections on love, loss, and existentialism. It's a layered, philosophical conversation about death, creativity, and connection—and one that turns costume and character into deeply human art forms.Synopsis:In The Shrouds, visionary filmmaker David Cronenberg delivers one of his most personal and provocative works to date. The film follows Karsh (Vincent Cassel), a grieving tech entrepreneur who, after the death of his wife Becca (Diane Kruger), develops GraveTech—a revolutionary system that allows mourners to monitor the real-time decomposition of their loved ones via high-tech burial shrouds and smartphone apps.Set in a near-future Toronto, the narrative unfolds as Karsh's creation becomes the center of controversy and intrigue. When several graves, including Becca's, are vandalized, Karsh embarks on a journey to uncover the perpetrators, delving into a web of conspiracies that blur the lines between technology, grief, and obsession. Drawing inspiration from Cronenberg's own experience with loss, The Shrouds is a meditation on mourning, the human desire for connection beyond death, and the unsettling intersections of technology and emotion. With its haunting visuals, a synth-heavy score by longtime collaborator Howard Shore, and a narrative that challenges perceptions of reality and memory, the film stands as a testament to Cronenberg's enduring exploration of the human condition.David Cronenberg is one of Canada's most influential and daring filmmakers, renowned for pushing the boundaries of cinema. Often dubbed the “Baron of Blood,” his work explores the dark intersections of technology, the body, and psychological trauma. From cult classics like Videodrome and The Fly to award-winning dramas like A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, Cronenberg has consistently challenged audiences with his provocative storytelling and signature style. With The Shrouds, he turns inward, crafting a deeply personal meditation on grief and connection, once again proving that he remains one of cinema's most fearless auteurs.Anne Dixon is a celebrated costume designer whose work spans film, television, opera, and dance, bringing characters to life through meticulous research and a deep understanding of visual storytelling. Her recent collaboration with Viggo Mortensen on The Dead Don't Hurt showcases her commitment to authenticity, as she recreated 19th-century attire with precision, even commissioning traditional ceinture fléchée belts from Quebec artisans to reflect the film's French-Canadian roots.Dixon's diverse portfolio includes projects like The Song of Names, Falling, and Anne with an E, earning her accolades such as the CAFTCAD Award and multiple Canadian Screen Award nominations. Her designs are known for their emotional depth and historical accuracy, making her a sought-after talent in the industry.F2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face.For more information about David Peck please visit his site here. With thanks to Josh Snethlage and Mixed Media Sound. On the Saturday April 19, 2025 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet Dr. Janet McMordie. She is a sports medicine physician who blends her medical expertise with a passion for the arts. During the pandemic, she embarked on a simultaneous journey into storytelling, discovering a revitalized connection to her creativity. She shifted from a tunnel-visioned medical career to explore improv, acting, and producing. We talk about medicine, acting, her award-winning Second Act Actors podcast and much more. Then, David Cronenberg. The Village Voice called him "the most audacious and challenging narrative director in the English-speaking world.” He has directed horror films, dramas, psychological thrillers and gangster films, like “Shivers,” “Scanners,” “Videodrome,” “The Fly,” “A History of Violence,” “Eastern Promises” and “The Dead Zone” among many others. Seven of his films were selected to compete for the Palme d'Or, the most recent being “The Shrouds,” which was screened at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger and Guy Pearce, “The Shrouds” explores the future of death. Casserl plays a “an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time.” It's an unsettling idea for a film, but it is a powerful and ultimately therapeutic look at grief in its many forms.

From breaking bones to trudging through snow – it is a Foley artist's role to reproduce the everyday sound effects that are added to film, TV and games. By using a variety of unconventional props and their own bodies, the goal is to create an authentic soundscape that will enhance our auditory experience. If the Foley goes unnoticed then they've done their job well! Datshiane Navanayagam speaks to two award winning Foley artists and asks what it's like to spend so much time, quite literally stepping into someone else's shoes. Caoimhe Doyle has over 25 years' experience creating Foley sound effects and footsteps for film, television and video games. She's been nominated three times for the MPSE Golden Reel Award for her work on Colm Bairéad's An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. In 2011 she won a MPSE Golden Reel Award and was nominated for an Emmy for her work on Game of Thrones: Season 1 and is a current MPSE nominee for work on Rich Peppiatt's Kneecap. Caoimhe collaborates with an all-female team out of The Foley Lab in a quiet part of County Wicklow in Ireland.Marita Sbeih is a Lebanese Foley artist and one of only a handful working in the Middle East. Since 2018, she has been the dedicated Foley Artist at DB Studios in Beirut, which provides audio post-production for films, documentaries, and art productions from around the globe. Pursuing a career as a Foley artist in a country with many unique challenges has been far from easy, but Marita has built an impressive list of credits for Foley and footsteps in some of the Arab world's more distinguished art-house and indie productions, as well as international projects. Most recently, she worked on Hot Milk, a UK film directed by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, which was selected for the official competition at the 75th Berlinale (2025).Produced by Hannah Dean (Image: (L) Caoimhe Doyle courtesy Caoimhe Doyle. Show Notes This week we watch a naïve midwife and a cynical gangster, whose mostly cynical because he's actually a cop, in Eastern Promises. One of the least Cronenbergian David Cronenberg films is best remembered for a naked bathhouse fight, but which has some deep and nuanced characters played by thoughtful actors and interacting in interesting and eminently believable ways. But also, there's a naked bathhouse fight. What a wonderful day! Hayley has made her way out west for an LCD Soundsystem concert, which means your intrepid hosts are in the same room recording live in person for the very first time, as we took our best gals to see 2024's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on laser IMAX at the old SilverCity Coquitlam on a great trip through the many suburbs of Vancouver. And because they were in the room listening along during the recording anyway, J Mo and Haylz are joined on the mic by their respective life partners (platonic or otherwise) as Sydney Beaudin and Ashley Olson make their triumphant podcast debuts. It's an off-brand episode as we break the format to talk about a movie we saw in theatres, recorded mere hours after we had all just seen it. Directed by Wes Ball, written by Josh Friedman, and starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, Travis Jeffrey, Lydia Peckham and William H. Macy, Kingdom has a tough act to follow in the Caesar trilogy but still manages to offer its own unique thrills thanks in no small part to its overgrown ruin, post-apocalyptic setting. It's also a perfect demo reel for Ball to show he was the perfect choice to make a live action Legend of Zelda movie. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, it is of course currently in theatres everywhere, and will no doubt be streaming on Disney+ about five weeks from now. Other works discussed in this episode include Videodrome, The Fly, Crimes of the Future, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, Scanners, Cosmopolis, Maps to the Stars, A Dangerous Method, The Maze Runner, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Lord of the Rings, Abigail, Real Steel, Deadpool & Wolverine, I.F., Harold & The Purple Crayon, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Twisters. We'll be back next week recording separately from our respective provinces as we welcome Mad Max: Fury Road into the podcast canon. That one is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and Starz at the time of publication. You can also grab it for $5 on Blu-ray from the discount bin at your local Walmart. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
This week, we return to the fuzzy, high-contrast world of Tony Scott, as the late great Scott brother cranks his signature style to the max in service of a bored rich girl becoming a bounty hunter. It's 2005's Domino, directed by Tony Scott, written by Richard Kelly, and starring Keira Knightley, Mickey Rourke, Edgar Ramirez, Delroy Lindo, Mo'Nique, Dabney Coleman, Dale Dickey, Lucy Liu and Christopher Walken. It's seemingly a staple of hot couch culture, and dropped in the middle of a very interesting run in Scott's career, but its failure may have scared him into only making movies with Denzel for the rest of his life. And that's fine. Plus, it was a busy week at the theatre as we've got field reports on Challengers, Abigail and (gasp) The Mummy (1999). Other works referenced in this episode include Beverly Hills Cop 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Mummy (2017), Uncharted, Rebel Moon - Part 2: The Scargiver, Atomic Blonde, A Knight's Tale, Mr. Show with Bob and David, Monkey Man, Alien, Casper, Jurassic Park, Dune: Part 2, The Social Network, Ready or Not, Scream V & VI, The Guest, Barbarian, Malignant, Annihilation, Men, Freaky, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, LOST, 3:10 to Yuma (2007), Smokin' Aces, Exposed, The Night of the Hunter, Stop Making Sense, The Beekeeper, Unstoppable, Deja Vu, Man on Fire, The Taking of Pelham 123, Southland Tales, Training Day, Spider-Man, The Wrestler, Ocean's 13, Final Destination 3, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, Crimes of the Future, The Fly, SpikeTV's Blade: The Series, and The Royal Tenenbaums. We'll be back next week, as we gear up for the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes theatrical release by finally watching the capper of franchise's Caesar trilogy -- Matt Reeves' 2017 War for the Planet of the Apes, which just like the entire Apes franchise is currently available to stream on Disney+. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

David Cronenberg is a great filmmaker, a legend in sci-fi film community but he also makes these dark, undertone thrillers where little action goes in the film but the one big violent scene is suppose to make it up for it all. In some cases, it works. In this film, it didn't work too much for me. It is a sold crime/gangster film. I love the fact how Anna who is played by Naomi Watts goes into the rabbit hole of Russian crime life all to make sure the baby she delivered is safe and with some type of GOOD family. Great motivation, great premise. It falls short in the third act of the film. I honestly felt it was weak. The screenplay overall is solid, it's written well everyone to understand what's going on. I just wished some scenes were birthed instead being known as a footnote in the overall film. I like cinematography, I like how the actors really became these characters, especially Vincent Cassel. He's the french GOAT and as always, he puts it all in this film. I like how the events in the film slowly unravel. I'd watch it again to appreciate Cronenberg's style and it's a style I can definitely get behind.Three out of four tokes.

Squarespace will honor existing customer pricing for at least 12 months following the completion of the purchase. It will also use Google's infrastructure to ensure a "seamless transfer of domains." For existing customers, Squarespace will provide billing and support for Google Workspace customers who've already purchased domains through Google Domains. However, as time goes on and as subscriptions start to renew, these customers will likely be forced to migrate to Squarespace's billing system. The acquisition is not surprising, as Squarespace is already a behemoth in the websites and domain space. The lawsuit, filed by the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA), claims that Twitter has "routinely ignored" requests for takedowns and that it is one of the only major social media platforms that does not have licensing agreements in place with music publishers. The NMPA also alleges that Twitter is less likely to take action against verified accounts that share copyrighted music, even though these accounts often have large follower bases. Shaun and Paul are back again for the latest discussion of David Cronenberg films, this time celebrating the sublime depths of A History of Violence and Eastern Promises. Both movies read like standard action thrillers on the surface, but some quick digging revels how these films display the dark violence that lurks just below the surface of everyday life. Both films also feature the astonishing range of Viggo Mortensen, who does a brilliant job bringing Cronenberg's ideas into reality. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jason-sacks/message
