Are work and Sabbath polar opposites? The Rev. Dr. Joel Biermann, Waldemar A. and June Schuette Professor of Systematic Theology and author of Day 7: For Work, Rest, or Play from Concordia Publishing House joins Andy and Sarah for a series on what Sabbath means for us. In this episode on chapter 3, they discuss how the “Protestant Work Ethic” affects how we consider work, our culture's “therapeutic” mindset, how the concept of being “made to work” is affected by the fall, the ways in which work and Sabbath are related, how we define and categorize work, whether work is part of what it means to be human, and what we learn about vocation from Luther's teaching. The Rev. Dr. Joel D. Biermann is the Waldemar A. and June Schuette Professor of Systematic Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and author of several books, including Day 7: For Work, Rest, or Play (new from CPH) and Wholly Citizens: God's Two Realms and Christian Engagement with the World (Fortress). In this lively and insightful Kitchen Table Talk conversation, Dr. Biermann answers timely questions on how to live, talk, think, and vote faithfully as a Christian citizen. Can Christians (in good conscience) opt out of the voting process? If we are to vote, how do our Lutheran doctrines of vocation and the “two realms” inform our civic engagement? What pitfalls should we try to avoid as we engage in party politics and the democratic process? Can Christians still vote their consciences when there don't seem to be any truly good or godly choices on the ballot? What do you mean? What does it mean to follow the sabbath? What do you think most people get wrong about the sabbath? Why is called the sabbath? On Becoming Your True Self Ibrahim Ansari To become your true self you will need tools, clarity on the objective, and perspectives on the big and little picture. Sufism is a well-developed system aimed at learning and knowing your Self. At this moment there are too many selves. Some you know, some you hide. In this case, we are looking for the one connected to the Universe, Allah, God, Truth, Ultimate Reality, Divine, Buddha —- whatever you call the feeling of Connection. We need something and someone who is really there to guide us out of our bad habits (Nafs) and towards a connection to the Divine, or Reality (Haqqiqah) First, we have to acknowledge that whatever power we have is, in reality, not ours. It is something given, and we are responsible for what we do with this energy. Secondly, there are many bad habits blocking that original, pure energy we were given to our True Self. We face a vicious intelligence guarding those bad habits. This guardian knows us so well that it can sabotage, camouflage, rationalize and subtly manipulate us into thinking we are in control. In truth, we are not in control. We are out of control whenever we get angry, or when we judge others, gossip, backbite, smoke, drink, swear- whatever we learned from our parents, guardians, teachers and culture. So the first thing we have to do in order to clear the way to our True Self, is to witness the Nafs at work. We see it whenever we react to others, in the knee-jerk responses to the news and politics, ricocheting off our close family members, and at work and on the job with others. We will need to learn a new kind of martial art that will allow us to fight these old and inherited loops of behavior. This is where Sufism is a fantastic partner in your journey to knowing your True Self. Sufism offers a number of tools depending on the degree and duration of the reviled habit. You cannot do this by yourself. I’ve tried. You may clear a couple of the cobwebs, but in reality it only delays the development and growth. The monumental problem is... you. You are in the way. All right, we are close to clarifying our first goal. When you know the habit you want to Change we move into the first warrior position. First position is called Change. Change is rewiring your brain. For this neurophysiological rewiring to happen requires Effort. Effort requires Work. Work means you develop an Intention to want to change. Work means you will clamber outside your comfort zone and perhaps experience some stress, anxiety, fear, embarassment and unwillingness. For Work to achieve its goal of Change we will need Time. Usually if you allow yourself 2- 4 months of focused work the habit will change. Second position: A sense of humor. To avoid taking yourself seriously and getting bogged down in what might look like failure at first, keep a good sense of humor about the whole thing. To get lighter and dump these noxious habits overboard, laughing at yourself and these demons takes away their power. Watch comedies, even take a crack at doing a stand-up routine, or take a class in Improvisational Theater. It’s a great way to get to know your inner characters, to let them out and laugh at them. Third position: Practice. Maintaining the intention of work through focus and determination. This is called Practice. Everyone needs support to keep up the Practice. What do you have at your disposal to call in for that support: Friends, smart watches, schedule, a reward system (Cookie? Star chart? List?), learn what works for you. Learn about how you learn. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Use your strengths to help overcome your weaknesses. I tend to get very genSupport the show (http://www.ansarisufiorder.org)

Nasir and Matt welcome author Meg Hirshberg to discuss her recent article about firing your spouse. They address, "I run a business that hinges on customer service. My son is home from college and can't find a job. Is it worth me taking the risk of hiring him knowing he probably won't be good for the business?" Full Podcast Transcript NASIR: Welcome to Legally Sound Smart Business. This is Nasir Pasha. MATT: And this is Matt Staub. NASIR: And this is where we cover business in the news and also put on our legal twist and also answer some of your business legal questions that you, the listener, sends in to ask@legallysoundsmartbusiness.com. Very good. MATT: Good intro, too. NASIR: I’m talking about myself – my intro. MATT: Yeah, good intro today. Good job. NASIR: Great. We are going to cover a nice little topic about families and businesses and spouses. I was thinking about this. I probably have at least I can think of four or five different clients that literally it’s a husband and wife operation as far as ownership goes. I always wondered how the dynamics filled that line. Today, we have a guest, her name is Meg Cadoux Hirshberg. She is the author of For Better or For Work and we found her. She actually got an article picked up on Inc.com which I thought was great. It’s called “I Love You but You’re Fired.” I thought it was a funny title. Well, of course, the link is on our show notes. Meg, how are you doing? MEG: Fine, thanks for having me today! NASIR: Absolutely. Matt, I’ve been thinking about this, we talk about how partnerships are like a marriage but what happens when the actual partnership is a husband and wife? That can really change the dynamics. MATT: You’re exactly right. A partnership, you have to view it as a marriage. If your partner in business is also your partner in your personal life, I could see lots of issues of where do you draw the line if you spend all day together at work. Do you go home and talk about work all day? There’s just a lot of things that go into that. So, I do really enjoy this article. It has a couple of stories and, from what I understand, Meg, you once worked with your spouse as well, correct? MEG: Yes, I did. My husband, Gary, founded Stonyfield Yogurt almost thirty years ago. When I met him and we moved up, we decided to get married and I moved up to the farm, we were actually on a farm in New Hampshire at that time – no longer – but when I moved up to the farm, I started working in the business right away and we worked together for a couple of years at which point we decided this was not the best thing for our relationship. So, I backed away from the business and haven’t worked for it since. NASIR: Very good. I think one of the biggest issues – despite whether it’s a marriage or not – finding who the decision-maker is in a business is sometimes difficult. We have a lot of people that come up with their partners, 50-50 partners, but I always tell them, “Look, even though you make decisions together, there has to be one person that breaks the tie, so to speak.” It reminds me, of course, we have to bring in the show The Office, when Jim and Michael were co-managers of the office and just how that just did not work and it doesn’t work in any other business. There’s always at least one person making those decisions. Would you find the same, Meg? MEG: Right. Well, that brings up one of the key issues that kind of rise when couples work together which is that it’s hard to transition from a situation at work in which usually one person is in-charge, i.e. the entrepreneur, often the spouse. Most businesses that are run by couples are not started by the couple together. Most are started by one person, the entrepreneur, who has a dream, has a vision, and then, “I want to help out.” That’s usually the way couples wind up working together. The relationship in the business setting is not equal. Usually, there is one person in-charge. Transitioning from that back home to a relationshi...
