Joining Nathan this week is returning guest Caleb Daniels of Commando Bond and for the first time on the show, Ian McCollum of Forgotten Weapons and Headstamp Publishing Co. to talk about Caleb's new book, featuring illustrations from Nathan ‘Licensed Troubleshooter: The Guns of James Bond'. This week, we're joined once again by a familiar face to delve into a familiar topic: Paul B and Moons Out Goons Out 2024! Moons Out Goons Out 2024 is a night vision carbine match hosted by Forgotten Weapons and supported by great companies like TNVC, Varusteleka, Refuge Medical, and many more. The match consists of several stages of carbine-only shooting at night, with only non-white light illumination sources being allowed during the entire course of the match. Our guest this week is a relatively new user of night vision devices, and Moons Out Goons Out 2024 is Paul's first venture into the competition space while using night vision. Paul B, an experienced writer affiliated with our sister sites OutdoorHub and AllOutdoor.com, had the opportunity this year to participate in the main match at Moons Out Goons Out 2024. Today, I've invited Paul to show us just how accessible attending the match can be – even for people who don't have the most expensive or latest night vision equipment. Unlike other competitors like myself who used expensive sets of night vision binoculars, Paul relied mainly on a single night vision monocular, and a relatively inexpensive gun. Tune in as we discuss his match experience, highlights, and plans for next year's Moons Out Goons Out night vision match.
We're back this week with another episode dedicated to the recent night vision carbine competition Moons Out Goons Out 2024 hosted by Forgotten Weapons. This week I had the opportunity to speak with the overall match director, a fellow competitor, and a good friend of mine - Les Winner of Polaris Logistics. This year Les had to put a lot of extra thought time and effort into each stage design to compensate for the reduced situational awareness, and drastically reduced visibility during the nighttime match. Since no white light was allowed at the match, everything from the movement of each squad, down to the terrain of the Echo Valley Training Center played a role in the creation of a safe match. Today Les and I talk about the gear he used for his own run during the match, some of the struggles with this year's stages, and how he and the Forgotten Weapons crew are planning on improving the event for next year's competitors. Please welcome Les Winner of Polaris Logistics back to the show! Les' YouTube Channel - Pegasus Tests Les on Instagram
For the next couple of weeks, we're going to be bringing on a couple of competitors from this year's "Moons Out Goons Out" night vision carbine match hosted by Forgotten Weapons. Our first pair of guests are Ian McCollum and Jordan Flayer, the two gentlemen from Forgotten Weapons responsible for putting the match together. Moons Out Goons Out is more than just about shooting under night vision. Today Ian, Jordan, and I talk about the tough safety challenges that they had to take into consideration for the match, their decisions behind the stage challenges and designs, as well as the effort they went through just to get the prize table stocked with great products for the competitors. If you're interested in attending next year's match, you can keep track of the Forgotten Weapons YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram pages for more information on the match, as well as dates for next year's match and equipment that you'll need to start training with and have. Please once again welcome the guys from Forgotten Weapons to the show! Forgotten Weapons on Instagram Forgotten Weapons on YouTube Forgotten Weapons on Facebook Forgotten Weapons Website

In our continuing coverage of Finnish Brutality 2023, it's only approprate that we bring on one of the founding members of the Brutality Matches - Ian McCollum from Forgotten Weapons! Ian along with Karl Kasarda of InRange TV started up the series of Brutality Matches back in 2018 after developing them from some local Arizona "Two Gun Action Challenge Matches." If you want to hear the full story on that, take a look back in our episode archive for our coverage of Woodland Brutality 2022 where Karl Kasarda and Russell Phagan give a full breakdown of how the matches were inspired, and how their unique ruleset works to create a highly fun yet competitive shooting environment. Today Ian joins us to talk about his personal experiences at Finnish Brutality 2023 with me in the media squad, as well as some areas where he thinks he could have done better, and finally, some advice for those considering attending a Brutality match anywhere in the world. Please give a warm welcome to the host of the Forgotten Weapons YouTube channel, Ian McCollum Ian's full match breakdown of Finnish Brutality 2023 ForgottenWeapons - Ian McCollum - Instagram Forgotten Weapons Website Thank you to Varusteleka for Sponsoring the event!
This week we're focused on YouTube's erratic moderation of silencers. The social media giant began deleting videos and even whole channels that featured silencers, often called suppressors, from their site a few weeks back. Then, after public outcry and an inquiry from The Reload, the company reversed course. But the damage to trust many gun creators had in the platform was already done by then. Ian McCollum, who had one of his suppressor videos from Forgotten Weapons deleted, joins the podcast to talk about the ordeal. He explains how this is not the first time YouTube has targeted gun channels with unclear policies. In fact, he said he's been dealing with these problems nearly the entire time he's been on the platform. That's why he's attempted to diversify where his content is hosted over the years. He's also taken to using alternative means for growing a sustainable income outside of YouTube in order to mitigate against the video company's impact on his ability to make the content he and his audience love. At the same time, he said he remains on YouTube because it's by far the largest platform out there and it's important to go where the audience is. He also shares some insight into what he has planned for the future of Forgotten Weapons. Both the long-term vision for the company and some hints at upcoming videos. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I talk about how the NRA managed to lose over a million members in just 4 years. Special Guest: Ian McCollum.
Amateurs talk strategy, but professionals talk logistics, according to General Omar Bradley. In 2017 he left Fabric8Labs to partner with Jason Murray and founded Arcflash Labs, LLC with the goal of advancing electromagnetic propulsion technologies.Together they developed a new type of high-density power inverter and offered a number of coilgun and gauss rifle prototypes for sale, including the GR-1 "Anvil" which was recently featured on Forgotten Weapons. David has been featured on the Forbes' 30 under 30 list in the area of manufacturing, and his projects have been featured on the Discovery Channel, Popular Mechanics, New Scientist, The Drive, and Popular Science.
One of my favorite YouTubers joins me on this week's episode of the podcast. Ian McCollum has built Forgotten Weapons into the premier firearms history publication. His videos documenting some of the world's rarest and most interesting firearms have been viewed nearly a billion times. His depth of knowledge on guns dating to the early 19th century is unrivaled and his ability to explain the unique, and often complex, mechanisms unique to hundreds of different guns from across the globe is impressive. And the way he is able to connect the development of the gun with the historical context to create a compelling story sits at the core of what makes his channel so successful. We talk about what motivated Ian to get into making gun videos and how he chooses which guns to make videos about. What is it that makes a gun a Forgotten Weapon? What is it about a gun's history that makes it interesting enough to grab hold of millions of eyeballs? We also get into what it's like to run a successful gun channel while YouTube is continually cracking down on gun content. How does Forgotten Weapons deal with not being able to rely on YouTube for ad revenue? Plus, Ian discusses whether there were guns throughout history that should've been more popular than they were. He also talks about where gun design is headed and whether something like the Laugo Alien is going to lead to new innovation through the rest of the industry. Special Guest: Ian McCollum.

This week we take a good long look at the colorful history of the musket. From the earliest “hand gonne” to the good old Brown Bess and Charleville, from Germany to England to the Americas, there’s a lot to talk about. Light your slow match, knap your flint, of course be sure to keep your powder dry, and for supplemental pics and info be sure to visit Gordon's blog. None of the world’s great powers were ready for the carnage World War I. The armies of 1914 looked a lot like the armies of 1814 … but they didn’t go to war with 19th century weapons. This week on War College, we sit down with Ian McCollum of Forgotten Weapons as he walks us through the Maxim Gun -- one of the earliest machine guns -- and how it changed the pace of war forever.
