News that Wilson Parking in Fort Street, Auckland, is the most expensive parking in New Zealand says a lot more than just a company creaming it. If you turn up first thing at the park and you use the on site machine then a days parking will cost you $74. Now who pays $74 for a days park? If you park casually then it will cost you $22 an hour - more than the minimum wage. I'm picking that if you park in this park then you're not working in hospo, you're earning enough to blow money like this, you don't feel you have an alternative and you love your car and want to park near work. So let's break that down. The average wage in Auckland is $72,000 a year, after tax that's $900 bucks a week in the hand. The median rent is $700 dollars, you need $100 a week for power, phone internet and gas, you need to eat. So where's the money for that park? The only people paying that earn way more than $72 grand. On the alternative, most don't have a car park. 50 per cent of workers in Auckland's CBD take public transport into work. That's because they don't get a park from their employer and they don't earn enough to face the parking charges. That's not their choice, it's an economic necessity, that's why public transport is critical to our productivity. Remember that the next time you complain about a bus lane. And finally a love of the car distorts the debate, because there are plenty of parks that don't cost that much. Like the city owned downtown car park, a car park which is half empty most days, which is why the council has sold the car park to developers to become a skyscraper and much more expensive parking. But park there and you may have to walk, so many don't and pay a fortune on wasted productivity. There comes a time in every city where the ease and convenience of driving to town becomes only available to the better off and that kills a CBD, a CBD that has already been gutted by suburban malls and cinemas. The fact that so many Aucklanders are prepared to pay so much to park a car in the CBD it makes me believe that the idea of congestion charges in an attempt to reduce traffic will fail, we're just going to pay to stay stuck in the same traffic queues. In his first official day in the job the new Police commissioner has delivered an early Christmas present to Auckland businesses and residents; anouncing the city centre's getting a new police base, almost a decade after the last one closed. A number of businesses and residents have been campaigning for a bricks and mortar presence in the central city saying violent and anti-social behaviour is major issue. In July, police increased the number of officers carrying out foot patrols in the area - adding another 21 officers. The previous station on Fort Street closed down in 2013 and the police headquarter moved to Freeman's Bay in 2019. Police Minister Mark Mitchell, previously told RNZ there was no budget for it, he spoke to Lisa Owen.

Good morning everyone, Carlos here, ready to embark on my Sunday adventure. Today, I'm catching the 28 bus instead of my usual 27 because it gets me to my destination at a more convenient time. Fort Street, where I'm heading, is named after the historic Fort Victoria and intersects with the bustling Douglas Street in downtown Victoria.I'll also be sharing an update on Norma's back surgery—she had a spot removed for biopsy, and I've been helping dress her wound daily. As for me, I'm working a couple of hours today due to a shortage of chefs, so I'm running to work from Fort Street to Little Piggy's Cater. On my way, I'll take some scenic photos and enjoy the views, like the beautiful Johnson Street Bridge and the serene Inner Harbour. It's overcast but still gorgeous, and I'm capturing these moments for my podcast and trailer video. Thanks for joining me on this run; I'll upload the audio once I get home. This is the Running Jackal signing off from my Sunday run to work. Have a great day!

Episode 44 opens with listener comments about our tribute to Brian Smiley; an update on the Dan Rentz 911 suicide call from Episode 42; then lots more updates in the city hall and provincial round-ups! 8:00 Part 2- Using the bully pulpit of the Free Press, Brent Bellamy is the mouthpiece of the elitist 'urban visionary' crowd in Winnipeg, aligned with the radical bike lobby. When Coun. Ross Eadie wrote to the newspaper disputing Bellamy's proposals that would make River and Osborne a nightmare for disabled and blind pedestrians, Bellamy mocked the concerns. You'll hear Eadie's detailed explanation and the crass, no class response from Bellamy, distorting the issues and dismissing the objections of the councilor who is himself blind. It's indicative of how actual public safety is an afterthought to the anti-car, anti-capitalist mob Bellamy fronts for. As Eadie put it: "This guy has an architecture stamp – wow... maybe architects should be penalized under the Accessibility For Manitobans Act." Comments, news tips, Interac donations- martygoldlive@gmail.com 19.40- That attitude against protecting genuine public safety is on display with the debate about closing Assiniboine Avenue at Main Street. Marty Gold provides the history of the idea, which was a favorite of the Manitoba Club front group, "Friends of Upper Fort Garry" in 2010. The flaws of the idea were put on the record by Kelly Ryback at the Public Works meeting - starting with a naval base down the block and the use of the road to get to St. Boniface Hospital. You'll hear audio clips from the subsequent discussion by councilors and the stunning deceptions that the bureaucrats were pulling to conceal their plans, dissuade public input, and cater to their allies in the bike lobby. 26.45 - Janice Lukes and Russ Wyatt question the department heads. You'll hear how emergency services were not actually asked about ambulances getting delayed going to the hospital, the dirty trick of labeling the report as 'information' when they intended to "roll this out" anyways, and Wyatt challenging this "dangerous" idea. Lukes called it "a tricky recommendation" and "confusing." Another trick was revealed- summer repairs on Assiniboine will block eastbound lanes, which will lower the numbers of vehicles diverted northbound down Fort Street and make it seem less obstructive of traffic than it really is. 34. 14- While the administration called it a "pilot", Wyatt rightly said, "It's a trojan horse, not a pilot". You'll hear the bureaucrats admit they didn't mention the word 'pilot' anywhere in the report or that the proposal to forbid right hand turns onto Main St. is for a YEAR. This is an example of the public service deliberately deceiving the public to tamp down their input. Not coincidentally- immediately after Wyatt identified the bike lobby as manipulating this initiative, the YouTube feed of the meeting was mysteriously cut off. He's taking his complaint about being censored to the Governance Committee. Marty recaps how stakeholders like small businesses and residents downtown are being shunted aside by high-paid liars on the public payroll who favor the bike lobby elitists. Lastly in the City Hall round-up, a Matt Allard sighting. Hear the questions he's going to be asked as we continue to seek an interview with him. It's not only about the Goulet bike lane, but that's a start. There's a Happyland Pool fundraising update to end the segment. 48:47 - Part 3 - Provincial round-up Update on the Bell MTS layoffs in Brandon, as we again scoop MSM; More reasons why Wab Kinew's NDP shouldn't follow the BC model of hard drug decriminalization and 'safe supply'; Four hopefuls- at least- are lining up to contest the PC nomination in Tuxedo to replace Heather Stefanson, one of whom is a strong voice for the Jewish community, Larry Pinsky. ******* To support the Truth for Lily, Justice For Dan $25/ticket fundraiser raffle: sheenapaterson.massagetherapy@gmail.com

Ongoing anti-social behaviour in central Auckland is prompting safety concerns among business owners and tourism operators, as more people flock into Downtown for summer. Co-owner of Vivace Restaurant Mandy Lusk says there have been multiple fights outside of her Fort Street venue, and she is no longer comfortable with staff walking to their cars alone. The Cruise Association is heading into its biggest season since pre-Covid days - but has told Nine to Noon its operators are noting that behaviour by rough sleepers, drinkers and drug dealers is intimidating for passengers. Central business association Heart of the City is calling for an urgent bylaw which would give council the power to trespass people when they are a risk to public safety. Heart of the City CEO Viv Beck, Auckland City Mission Chief Executive Helen Robinson and Vivace co-owner Mandy Lusk speak with Kathryn Ryan.
Auckland businesses have demanded more action on addressing antisocial behaviour in the city centre. They're calling to adjust a bylaw, which would give the council power to trespass people if they believe they're a risk to public safety. Fort Street restaurant Vivace is planning on giving safety advice to customers and using private security guards. Co-owner Mandy Lusk says the unruly behaviour is a nuisance and hurts their businesses. "But there's also people just out there making a nuisance of themselves- and they seem to get some kind of pleasure out of scaring people and being aggressive." Where do the mile roads in metro Detroit begin? And why do we have mile roads in the first place? WDET's Pat Batcheller answers those questions and explains what you need to know about mile roads in Southeast Michigan. Then, we connect the dots on why intersections on roads like Michigan Ave and Fort Street have such weird angles. Finally, we find out who John R really was. Have your own question about Detroit? Doesn't the shooting in Auckland overnight illustrate to you that the Police Ministers' idea of getting volunteers to do patrols in Auckland CBD so police don't have to is not only cooked, but also dangerous. The latest from police is that these guys didn't know each other and got into a verbal altercation on Fort Street. Next minute, got into a physical altercation, and next minute one chap pulls out a gun and shoots one bloke in the abdomen, another in the head, and then takes off on a Lime scooter. For a start, do they really think that people that are prepared to shoot at each other are gonna be put off by a couple of volunteers patrolling the street? But even to the point... do we really want to those volunteers walking into a situation like that? Imagine just for a second, that a couple of Maori wardens came across those men rumbling last night. What if they tried to break up the fight where one of those guys had a concealed gun? I don't want to send Maori grandmas and granddads into that, that's nuts. It's crazy that the Police Minister even thought this was feasible. Police are doing a valiant job of trying to tell Aucklanders that there's nothing to worry about today. But you'd have to be living under a rock not to notice the increase in violent crime in that part of the city lately; this is the second shooting in two weeks. It comes after a mass brawl of multiple people laying into one guy on the waterfront in May, and it comes after kids with hammers held up a jewellery store on Queen Street. Police Minister Ginny needs to get with the page. We need more cops. Remember those 1800 extra police were recruited to fill a gap that existed in 2017 already. That was before Labour emptied the prisons. That was before hundreds more 501s arrived here. It was before the Comancheros even set up a chapter in NZ. Six years on and a heck of a lot more crime, we need more police patrolling Auckland's CBD, and everywhere else. We do not need grannies and grandads trying to break up fights, and I'd bet you that even Ginny realised that after last night. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New in this update:Victoria Police served fines to a party host and a party goer over the weekend. Police say the host was twice warned about COVID party rules on Friday night before being hit with a $2300 dollar ticket. Police say 30 people were in the one bedroom apartment at the time but dozens more had come and gone between the warnings. Officers returned to the same Fort Street apartment for another crowded party early Sunday morning. When one partygoer refused to leave, he was hit with a $230 dollar fine. The fines were levied under new COVID-19 public safety rules, announced by the province on Friday.Nanaimo's Loaves and Fishes foodbank is turning the hardships of COVID-19 into an opportunity to improve services. Its executive director says many volunteers were uncomfortable about continuing to serve when the pandemic started. The foodbank was able to replace them with six younger workers for longer shifts thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Victoria Foundation. Peter Sinclair says other cash donations paid for COVID needed supplies like tents for outside food distribution. He says food donations also increased dramatically from restaurants that were shut down due to the pandemic.“At the height of it, we were receiving 9,000 dozen eggs a week: all of them were supposed to go to restaurants and we also got a lot of salmon coming in, again destined for restaurants. So we saw a dramatic increase in donations.” —Peter Sinclair, Loaves and Fishes Foodback Executive Director.Sinclair says Loaves and Fishes shared its overflow with other not for profit groups. As a result, that decreased the number of its clients, who collected their food hampers from other local organizations.Casino operators are hoping to get the green light to reopen, now that they have created restart plans, with the BC Lottery Corporation. The new rules would mean fewer slot machines, more plexiglass and only dealers would be allowed to touch the cards. But, BC's Minister of Health, Adrian Dix says there are NO plans to reopen casinos in BC, although they are open in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec. BC's Deputy Provincial Health Officer Dr. Reka Gustafson, says casinos are too high risk."COVD 19 transmission is highest risk in close settings where people are in close proximity, touching many things, and especially if some of the behaviours are altered by alcohol. We also know that as people get older, their risk of severe disease increases. So from a disease control perspective, these would be particularly worrisome places to reopen." —Dr. Reka Gustafson.Last year, casinos contributed close to one and a half billion dollars to provincial government revenues. Close to 3,000 casino workers were laid off when the pandemic began.Starting today, masks are now mandatory on all BC Ferries and your local transit buses.
Abe Hefter and I finally crossed paths in 2002. I recall hearing him on CJFM (FM96) in the 80's, and in 2002 we convened on Fort Street at that station when CHOM, Mix96 and CJAD merged itself into one entity. Abe began to transition into academia in 2003 when he received an opportunity to teach part time at Concordia University. There's something about teaching that brings out the energy in Abe. Very simply, you can hear it in the episode when we talk about inspiring the next generation of broadcasters. In this episode, Abe and I track his career in short order which included stops at notable radio stations like CFNY, CKEY, CKNW, CJFM, and CJAD. He also told us what it was like to be call Montreal Canadiens hockey games. Abe has always done a little of everything, and today that includes hosting a blues show on WWUH 91.3, on campus at the University of Hartford. We also discussed in depth about social media and the impact it is having on news, and whether a platform should be censoring its users. Abe said Twitter was his "go-to" so give him a follow. We also referenced other episodes which featured former personalities and creators now teaching. This includes:Dave Bannerman, Nova Scotia Community CollegeDonna Halper, Lesley UniversityCarlos Benevides, Conestoga CollegeThere's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatrax
