It's been a trying year for Denver's mayor. Mike Johnston has battled with the Trump administration over the city's welcoming immigration policies. On the flipside, a top attraction, the 16th Street Mall, is finally reopening. Then, a steel startup in Boulder plans to make climate-friendly iron. And MSNBC's Eugene Daniels returns to his alma matter, CSU, as president of the White House Correspondents' Association.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston on Wednesday announced the creation of a new police unit focused on downtown safety, a move that another official said would yield "significant changes in the crime map" for the corridor within a year and encourage people to come back. Joined by Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas and other city officials on the 16th Street Mall, Johnston said the success of the city depends on the success of downtown.“Downtown Denver is not just the backbone of Denver's economy, but it's the cultural and civic heart of the Mountain West," Johnston said in a news release. “These new public safety resources — coupled with $570 million in economic investments through the Downtown Development Authority, the completion of construction on 16th Street, and non-stop events and attractions all summer — downtown is well on its way to being the vibrant core of our city once again."

Four stabbings along the 16th Street Mall last weekend left two people dead and put downtown back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Was the tragic violence just another sign of an increasingly unsafe city? Or an outlier on the path back to a vibrant, thriving downtown? Former mayoral candidate and criminal justice reform advocate Lisa Calderón joins host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi to discuss the vibe shift downtown and all the other big stories of the week — from the mayor's needle exchange veto to the massive news about the future of the Park Hill Golf Course.  Paul quoted from former mayor Wellington Webb's comments at the PHGC press conference, Mayor Johnston's statement on vetoing the needle exchange proposal and the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment's 2024 report on syringe access. He also mentioned the Uber lawsuit and a “true old-school Chinese breakfast.” Bree mentioned our episode about the City of Denver's bison herd. Rundown -   Intro - 00:35   Wellington Webb - 10:33   Troubadour Dave Gunders - 01:11:24   "Can I Ask for Everything?" by Dave Gunders - 01:27:08   Outro - 01:33:15   Wellington Webb came to Denver as an 11-year-old asthmatic but soon became a Colorado legislative leader, Denver's elected Auditor, and then Denver's strong and successful three-term Democratic mayor (1991-2003).   Just back from Nevada, where he went door-to-door for Kamala Harris, Mayor Webb gives his insights on problems Kamala Harris will have to overcome to win over some voters, including too many women who won't vote for a female.   A champion doorknocker, Mayor Webb recalls his 42-day-and-night walk through Denver that won him the election in 1991. Channel Nine and East High debates against late Denver DA Norm Early were decisive in 1991, and the debate victor, Mayor Webb, reviews highlights with pleasure.   Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb recalls three major Denver protests and how he handled the civil unrest. He reviews and critiques Trump's authoritarian threats to quell civil demonstrations. But what about the Constitution? That was always Mayor Webb's touchstone.   Denver's Nuggets are off to a rocky start, possibly related to Russell Westbrook. Mayor Webb laments the loss of KCP, and Uncle Jeff Green's departure caused the Nuggets to slide last season. The out-of-state pro sports owners of Colorado franchises are critiqued.   Mayor Webb is unhappy with Denver's current feelings and conditions. He gives a frank assessment of problems (e.g., 16th Street Mall) in the Mile High City and explains the essentials of bringing a swagger back to the capital city of Colorado.   Troubadour Dave Gunders provides his entertaining song "Can I Ask for Everything?" How about the Democrats win the Presidency, Senate, and House? How will the women of America react to this threat to their autonomy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUqSWAqv_sQ   The host describes his feelings after a swing state tour of Georgia (MLK Center) and North Carolina. The capitulation of WaPo and LA Times to MAGA is discussed and ripped. This is how fascism does its damage. We keep going. Electoral tension builds with voting well underway.

Downtown Denver is definitely not the hellhole that some suburban Republicans think it is, but since the pandemic it's certainly seen better days. The work-from-home boom means fewer and fewer people traversing the city's core and, in turn, fewer customers for downtown shops, bars, and restaurants. But even with many eateries shuttering in the last few years — The Market, The Paramount Cafe, The Hard Rock Cafe, and even McDonald's! — has come opportunity. Host Bree Davies is joined by Westword food editor Molly Martin and newsletter editor Peyton Garcia for lunch at one of the most exciting new spots — Little Finch on 16th Street Mall — and a conversation about the potential for a downtown dining rebirth. The Daily Sun-Up

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 4, 2021 11:33

Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Monday October 4th,    Today - Countrywide many industries have been faced with worker shortages throughout the pandemic. Now, as federal unemployment benefits fade, Colorado employers are hoping to see an uptick in applicants for open roles.    Before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”:   Today we're going back to October 4th, 1982 when an estimated 200,000 people - roughly 40% of Denver's population at the time - showed up along sixteenth street at lunchtime. They were there to celebrate the transformation of the former commercial hub - and the dedication of the Sixteenth Street Mall. The Sixteenth Street Mall offered the hope of real urban renewal.    Now, our feature story.    Colorado's employers are locked in a battle for workers, with the service industry struggling to hire the same workers eyed by giants like Amazon, which needs one thousand more employees at its two-point-four million square-foot warehouse in Thornton and another twenty-two hundred workers at its Colorado Springs' facility. As federal unemployment benefits fade, employers across the state are hoping to see more applicants.    And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today:   The legal wrangling over Colorado's new district-tweaking congressional map has begun. After months of contentious debate, the Colorado Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission has sent its new congressional map to the Colorado Supreme Court, where a host of political candidates, political parties and advocacy groups will challenge the proposed redistricting.    San Juan County in southwest Colorado boasts an impressive ninety-nine point nine percent vaccination rate, yet the one-town county is struggling with the spread of COVID-19 and the highly contagious delta variant. The recent death of a resident -- and the hospitalization of others -- has caused the county to backtrack with new regulations that limit indoor events and require masks indoors.     When search and rescue teams must delay recovery of a fallen adventurer, sometimes friends step-in. In the last year, when two skiers, a hiker and a kayaker did not returned home from the mountains, their friends have conducted ad hoc, and often complicated, recovery efforts. Colorado's search and rescue teams rarely condone civilian rescues or recovery missions, but sometimes the lost or fallen's friends are uniquely skilled and qualified to step up when others are unable.   For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Now, a quick message from our editor. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Franchise! How Small, Local Business becomes Big Business

Location 3, is a digital marketing agency that “delivers enterprise-level strategy with local market activation. In its 20th year in business, the Google-Analytics Certified agency works primarily with franchisors to understand their business objectives and facilitate enterprise strategy alignment and with individual franchisees, to promote hyper-local-level marketing activation. Services include business listing management, SEO, data and analytics, and driving new revenue through paid search, paid social, local programmatic buys – and anything else that makes sense for boosting local level revenue.  How big is the franchise market? Alex notes that over 50% of all US retail locations are part of a franchise organization. Only about 30% of the approximately 750,000 franchise locations in this country are in fast food/casual dining. Almost anything, Alex explains, can use the franchise model. Location 3 focuses less on fast food and more on services or franchise systems with measurably higher customer lifetime values. In this interview, Alex explains how Digital marketing at the local level is interesting, but also complicated. Unlike direct mail, where someone can walk into a store with a traceable coupon, programmatic vendors (e.g., Google and Facebook) can claim, based on their technology, that someone saw or engaged with your ad or website on their platform, and ended up in your location. When promotions are on multiple platforms, how does one tell which one actually drove the store visit? And how should the proportion of spend be tweaked to maximize revenue growth? To facilitate optimal decisions, Location 3 provides franchisees with full turnkey campaigns across a broad variety of platforms, tracks return on ad spend, and shares that information with it clients with full transparency. Location 3 developed a franchisee-facing software platform, LOCALACT, which serves as a hub of local digital data. Franchisees can use this tool to see their local page analytics, how their local Google My Business is performing, and where their traffic is coming from; respond to reviews; and buy additional media.  Alex can be reached on his company's website at: https://location3.com/, on YouTube, or at 820 16th St. Suite 300, Denver, CO 80202. You can always check out our website. We're very active. We have a pretty active YouTube account. We put up some video content. We go to pretty much every franchise tradeshow that's out there, so if you're in the franchise space and we haven't met you, I'm sure we will soon. Very active in that community, the tradeshow community. If you're ever in Denver, we're right on 16th Street Mall right downtown.

Denver already has 11 license-plate readers mounted in vehicles that it uses around the city, which it has operated since debut in 2015. In its first 47 days alone, police used just a single unit to read nearly a half-million plates, generating more than 9,000 “hits” on suspicious cars and resulting in 40 citations and 71 arrests.
