Today, we're talking about VW potentially bringing manufacturing to the US to avoid tariffs, Honda planning to introduce a sub $30K EV in the US, and how iPhones can now text on the SpaceX Starlink satellite network.Show Notes with links:Volkswagen Group is exploring plans to build Audi and Porsche models in the U.S. if President Donald Trump imposes high tariffs on vehicle imports from Europe and Mexico. This proactive move aims to safeguard the brands from potential trade barriers that could significantly impact profitability.Unlike the VW brand, which already has U.S. production, Audi and Porsche models sold in the U.S. are currently imported, making them vulnerable to tariffs.VW's Chattanooga plant, which produces the VW Atlas and ID.4, has excess capacity and could be expanded for luxury models.Another option is VW's upcoming South Carolina plant for the Scout brand, which could also accommodate Audi production.A 10% tariff on European imports could reduce VW Group's profits by 5-10%, while a 25% tariff on Mexican imports could result in a 15% hit, according to Moody's.Honda is stepping into the affordable EV space with a sub-$30,000 electric vehicle that could hit U.S. dealerships as early as 2026. A third of Honda's global sales are EVs and it aims to boost its U.S. EV presence. The new EV will be locally built in Ohio, starting with battery production, to reduce costs. It will be a part of the new Honda 0 Series and will follow Honda's higher-end 0 Series SUV and sedan, expected to cost $50K–$60K.Honda sold over 33,000 Prologue SUVs last year, outperforming the Chevy Equinox and Cadillac Lyriq, despite sharing GM's Ultium platform. The affordable EV could compete directly with GM's next-gen Chevy Bolt, also slated for a 2026 launch at a similar price point.Apple's latest iPhone update gives T-Mobile users access to SpaceX's Starlink network, marking a new era of connectivity.iOS 18.3 introduces support for SpaceX and T-Mobile's direct-to-cell satellite texting, meaning text messaging via satellite in areas without cellular coverageThe feature was previously limited to select Android devices, including Samsung models.Beta testers have begun receiving texts confirming access to satellite messaging.Future updates aim to add voice and data capabilities for complete off-grid connectivity.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Shoot us a Text. It's Monday and that means we GET to work in automotive retail. Today we're talking about GM's adjusted EV plans, BP's investment into EV charging and what it means to be “luxury.”Show Notes with linksGeneral Motors is gearing up to launch a series of new electric vehicles across its Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac brands this year, aiming to capture a broader market despite current sales challenges.Although EV sales growth has slowed due to high prices and charging concerns, GM still aims for zero-emission light-duty vehicles by 2035.GM has already cut EV production targets by up to 50,000 units this year. The Chevrolet Equinox EV is expected in all trims this year, and is set to be GM's most affordable electric vehicle. MSRP will start at around $35,000, including shipping before the $7,500 federal tax credit.Looking ahead, GM will introduce the new-look Chevy Bolt in 2025 and plug-in hybrids in 2027.GM's Mary Barra said "I think we all know that the growth of EVs has slowed. We never expected it to be linear."BP is partnering with Simon Property Group to install 900 electric vehicle (EV) chargers at various locations as a part of BP's broader strategy to expand its EV charging network and support the increasing demand for electric vehicles.Last year, BP Pulse made plans to invest $1 billion in America's EV infrastructure by the end of the decade.BP Pulse has more than 33,900 EV charge points globally, the company said, and plans to have 100,000 points by 2030.This initiative supports BP's commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions.Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks are also teaming up to install fast electric vehicle chargers at 100 coffee-slinging locations on Interstate 5, which runs along the West Coast from Canada to Mexico. These new stations will be part of the German automaker's $1 billion plan to build 2,000 new EV charging hubs across the globe.A recent Morning Consult Intelligence brand tracker study highlights shifting priorities among luxury shoppers, with over 75% saying quality is more important than cost in luxury retail.65% of consumers value exclusive access to products as part of their luxury shopping experience, and 64% believe that high price is an important aspect of luxury.Superior customer service is crucial, with 72% citing it as a key expectation and 63% expect personalized shopping services as part of their experience. In travel, luxury is defined by comfort; in food and beverages, it's fresh, rare ingredients. Most luxury purchases are still made in brick-and-mortar stores, including secondhand items.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

He also installed generators in each of his stores.Chris Poulos, owner of West Point Lincoln in Houston, focuses on securing lot items and relocating vehicles to protected areas, but knows that high deductibles often hinder how much insurance can help. “In incidences [similar to Beryl], insurance — unless you sustain significant damage with significant flooding — is not going to really help you offset any of the cost involved in getting up and running."Tom and Anita Castriota, owners of Castriota Chevrolet in Hudson, Florida, are able to move hundreds of vehicles to 10 acres of higher ground behind their dealership and have installed windows that can withstand 140mph winds.Ted Smith, president of FADA, says that this time of year, pushing out information to help dealers minimize risk becomes a huge focus. “Standard operating procedure in Florida is to be ready, to take every storm very seriously and, most importantly, protect lives — but protect the inventory, as well.”For the first time ever, an EV topped the monthly best-seller list for Manheim. In June, the 2023 Tesla Model 3 was Manheim's No. 1 seller and the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt ranked as No. 3.The top 5 best-selling EVs at all auctions according to AuctionNet were; 2021 Tesla Model Y, 2023 Model 3, 2021 Model 3, 2023 Chevy Bolt, 2021 Model 3 (maybe a trim difference?)This milestone reflects the growing presence of EVs in the wholesale market.Manheim saw over 21,000 EV sales in Q2, marking a 108% YoY growth and in the first half of 2024, EV sales are up 97% with over half sold units (57%) are Teslas"Electrics command a 2.1% share of Manheim sales, up from 1% a year ago," said Jeremy Robb, Cox Automotive.Robotics startup Figure released a video last week showing its 01 humanoid robot performing tasks at a BMW car plant. The 01 robot demonstrated moving multiple components onto a jig with placement tolerances claimed to be less than a centimeter,, showcasing its potential to handle repetitive, low-skill tasks. The robot uses neural networks to learn tasks and can work in human-designed spaces without requiring costly factory redesigns. BMW and Mercedes-Benz have both signed agreements with robotics startups to Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Recently the IIHS has provided a rating of 14 driver assistance softwares across 9 manufacturers, all of which received marginal or poor marks. There's no evidence of real-world safety benefits from these systems, with the IIHS citing a lack of reduction in insurance claims.Despite Tesla's claims of safety, federal regulators are investigating nearly 1,000 accidents involving Autopilot.Lexus's Teammate with Advanced Drive system received an "acceptable" rating, standing out among its peers."We have been able to look at vehicles with and without these (systems) and determine there is no reduction in claims as a result of these more advanced systems," says IIHS President David Harkey. We all love the idea of a connected car, but it looks like insurance companies are taking liberties with the data available from manufacturers connected systems to determine insurance rates per driver.Kenn Dahl, a careful driver from near Seattle, was stunned when his insurance spiked by 21% due to data collected by his Chevy Bolt and shared by General Motors with LexisNexis.LexisNexis' report on Dahl detailed over 640 trips, monitoring speed, braking, and accelerations but not locations, affecting his insurance rates.GM and other automakers collect driving data for insurance purposes, often with driver consent buried in fine print or unknown to the driver entirely.Jen Caltrider, a researcher at Mozilla who reviewed the privacy policies for more than 25 car brands last year, called cars “a privacy nightmare.”How to Find Out What Your Car Is DoingSee the data your car is capable of collecting with this tool: https://vehicleprivacyreport.com/.Request your LexisNexis report: https://consumer.risk.lexisnexis.com/consumerRequest your Verisk report: https://fcra.verisk.com/#/After filing for bankruptcy in October, a California court has sanctioned the sale of Shift Technologies' digital assets, including domain names, trademarks, and social media accounts.TrueCar founder Scott Painter won the domain names, trademarks and social media accounts of Carlotz.com, Autoacquire.com, Canvas and Xchange Leasing for $35K. Polestar has announced that it will adopt Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS), joining other automakers like Ford, General Motors, Rivian Automotive, and Volvo Cars. This agreement will give Polestar drivers in the United States and Canada access to Tesla's Supercharger network. Volkswagen is currently in discussions with Tesla about potentially adopting Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS). Volkswagen's EV charging network unit, Electrify America, has already established over 850 charging stations in the US and Canada. Electrify America, the second-largest electric vehicle fast-charging network in the US, plans to add Tesla's connector to its charging stations, aiming to adopt Tesla's plug as the industry standard. By 2025, Electrify America aims to incorporate Tesla's connector into both existing and future chargers. Blink Charging, a provider of electric vehicle charging solutions, has announced plans to integrate the North America Charging Standard (NACS) by Tesla into its entire product range. The company aims to make all its charging products NACS compatible by October 2023. According to a study by J.D. Power, Tesla's chargers are more reliable than those of its competitors. Tesla vehicle owners reported the highest satisfaction with public charging, scoring 734 on a 1,000-point scale. Chevrolet has announced that the base trim of the 2024 Silverado EV will start at $50,000. However, the actual MSRP is subject to change, and there will be different price ranges available to cater to buyers' needs. Germany is planning to allocate up to 900 million euros in subsidies for the expansion of electric vehicle charging stations for households and companies. The country aims to have one million charging points by 2030. South Korean battery supplier LG Chem is expanding its main plant in Holland, Michigan to increase its production output of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) from 5 gigawatt hours to 25 gigawatt hours. Tesla's upcoming refreshed Model 3 is rumored to feature CATL's new M3P LFP cells, which are expected to increase the vehicle's range. CATL has become one of Tesla's main battery manufacturers. Tesla is reportedly examining StoreDot's XFC Extreme Fast Charging battery technology. StoreDot is an Israeli startup known for producing EV batteries capable of rapid charging. Suzuki's first electric vehicle for global markets has been spotted in images ahead of its planned launch in 2025. The production car closely resembles the EVX concept unveiled earlier in India. Aston Martin is making changes to its supplier network as it prepares to develop its electric car platform. It has decided to source parts from its shareholder, Geely, in an effort to cut costs and expedite the arrival of its electric vehicles. The EU parliament has approved new legislation aimed at making electric vehicle (EV) batteries more environmentally friendly and efficient. The regulations will impact the design, production, and waste management of all batteries sold in the EU. Toyota has fallen in brand loyalty rankings in the United States, dropping to seventh place in a study by S&P Global Mobility. This demotion was partly due to customers defecting to Tesla. The UK is set to gain its first lithium mine in Cornwall through a joint venture between British startup British Lithium and French mining company Imerys. The mine aims to produce enough lithium for 500,000 electric cars per year by the end of the decade. Domino's Pizza is set to have the largest electric pizza delivery fleet in the US, with over 1,100 custom-branded Chevy Bolt electric vehicles planned for use by the end of the year. The electric vehicles provide various benefits including longer battery life, zero emissions, advanced safety features, and lower maintenance costs.
