A Liberal majority was officially confirmed last night. The Carney government got a clean sweep in the three by-elections. Should young Canadians, thinking about heading south for better pay and bigger opportunities, write Ottawa a cheque for half a million dollars on their way out? Christine Frechette held her first press conference as Premier designate yesterday, looking for unity in a party that might be showing signs of cracking. The cumulative deficit for road maintenance now stands at $24.5 billion. So how can we fix it? Are you paying more than the person standing next to you… for the exact same product — and you don’t even know it? That’s the concern behind a new push from Avi Lewis and the NDP, who want Ottawa to crack down on what’s known as “surveillance pricing”.

This week, we break down Albo's defensive masterclass on Sunrise where he pulls off the classic "I'm not the finance minister" dodge, name-drops Sussan Ley, and attempts the slowest political pivot in history — all while journalists actually hold his feet to the fire about ministerial spending. Beauty Pageant Politics: The Million Dollar Distraction While the Murdoch media machine goes into overdrive about Annika Wells' travel expenses, we expose the cherry-picked outrage for what it really is: beauty pageant politics designed to distract you from the real scams. Sure, politicians waste a million bucks on flights — but while you're focused on that, Labor's taking $600,000 from gambling companies and refusing to ban gambling ads that cost Aussies $31 billion a year. We do the bad maths: if banning gambling ads reduced losses by just 3%, that's a billion dollars back in punters' pockets — or a thousand times more than all the ministerial travel rorts combined. Transurban's Toll Scam: The Junk Fee Heist Nobody's Talking About Konrad gets absolutely fleeced by Transurban's toll fee scam — $40 in tolls, $50 in junk fees — and breaks down every single predatory charge this legal monopoly hits you with: $10 admin fees, $0.75 "video matching" fees, $15 non-return tag fees, and a dozen other made-up charges that would make a Nigerian prince blush. Plus, we float the idea of a digital toll protest: what if 100,000 punters just stopped paying until Transurban pays their fair share of tax? It's a toll hostage situation — you want your money? Start acting like a legitimate business. Also: Konrad rates his own political redirect performance, we answer Spotify comments about whether One Nation is taking over the Libs, and we're officially on a government-mandated break until February (probably). TURF also educated the public about the Trans Texas Corridor (TTC), the first of the planned NAFTA Superhighways, and eventually helped pass a complete repeal of the TTC from state statute in 2011. TURF also helped secure a moratorium & sunset of controversial public private partnership road contracts in 2007 and was also the first grassroots group to oppose the use of stimulus money for toll roads in 2009, which garnered national coverage by the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Fox News.TURF is a grassroots group of Texans asking for reforms through accountability and good public policy as well as promoting non-toll, sensible transportation solutions. Is it easier to get 400 baseball writers to all agree on who is a Hall of Famer or 30 Major League Baseball owners to agree on ways to address skyrocketing payroll disparity? That's the question that begins a brand new episode of the Best Podcast in Baseball. Esteemed baseball writer Tyler Kepner, of The Athletic and formerly with the New York Times, joins host Derrick Goold to discuss Ichiro Suzuki and his peers in the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2025. It's a robust class that includes a top left-handed starter CC Sabathia who got elected on his first ballot and a top left-handed reliever Billy Wagner who got elected on his final ballot. The class also includes Dick Allen and Dave Parker to further reveal the many numerous routes available to players to reach induction in Cooperstown. There is the expressway that Suzuki takes with near unanimous support. There is the state two-lane highway that will likely welcome switc-hitter Carlos Beltran to Cooperstown in 2026, and then there's the country roads that Wagner had to drive to ultimately reach immortality. All of which brings us to the crossroads currently facing baseball. With the Dodgers spending freely and collecting all of the talent, is the only way deep into October through Los Angeles? The two baseball writers discuss the widening gap in the game and explore one reason for the dramatic change (hint: shrinking small- and mid-market television revenues) -- and whether there will be a correction in a few years. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold. It appears weekly wherever you subscribe or listen to podcasts and is part of the newspaper's Constant Cardinals Coverage.

Motorists will have to pay between a $1 and $5 .40 to drive on them. The announcement, made by Minister of Transport Simeon Brown earlier today, doubles the number already operating in New Zealand. Mr Brown also announced changes to tolling systems meaning the vehicle owner - rather than the driver - will be charged. But the government caved on a proposal to toll the new Manawatu-Tararua Highway after the proposal faced backlash from the local community. Dom Kalasih from Transporting NZ spoke to Susana Lei'ataua.

It should come as no surprise to anyone, driving on our roads is about to get more expensive. Simeon Brown's come out this afternoon and whacked tolls on 3 new highways or expressways. Otaki to north of Levin - $2.70 for a car. $5.40 for a truck. Takitimu North Link - that's the Tauranga to Te Puna. 4 lanes. $2.10 off peak. $3.10 peak. Double that for trucks. Penlink in Auckland - $2 off peak. $3 peak. Again.... trucks double. These prices will increase with inflation. This does not bother me at all, in fact, I welcome it. If we keep relying on governments to fund infrastructure off their balance sheet with borrowing, we'll keep getting the same woeful results we have thus far. Roads that are shoddy and unsafe. Roads that aren't big enough or wide enough. And not enough roads being built to drive regional economic growth. The last government cancelled a bunch of RONS and put some of that money into public transport instead. Hopefully if a road has a toll attached to it it'll be harder to justify them doing that when they get it next time. What we don't yet know is whether existing roads will be tolled, which I don't think is a fair thing to do. The government has changed the rules to allow tolling of existing roads if a new corridor or extension is being added. But it hasn't yet been specific - does that mean the whole road or just the new bit. They need to clarify that cause it's hardly fair if you've bought a house and commute you ran your sums on the basis it wasn't tolled... if they turn round and whack you with a charge then that's not on. On the whole I say build the roads. We'll pay for them. Just get it done.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Australian drivers are spending billions on toll roads, with one company, Transurban, operating 18 of the country's 22 toll roads. As toll prices are pegged to inflation, costs are increasing, leaving drivers paying more each year, especially in cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane where daily commutes can cost drivers up to 150 dollars a week. Stephen Mayne, an Australian journalist and shareholder of Transurban, is attending the company's general meeting, armed with lots of questions about why the tolls are so high. He spoke with Ingrid Hipkiss.

The Government's released its fourth quarter action plan, which largely focuses on infrastructure. Its 43 actions include passing the Fast-track Approvals Bill, RMA reform, and looking at more road tolls. It also includes establishing a National Infrastructure Agency. Infrastructure New Zealand chief executive Nick Leggett told Heather du Plessis-Allan the Fast-track approvals bill will help speed up infrastructure projects. He says the National Infrastructure Agency will be a shop front for foreign direct investment, and funding and financing tools to build more housing are also important. Leggett also says we need to change our mindset on tolling. He says if people want things, there isn't a magical money fairy to come and deliver them, as we're in a tight fiscal position.
