Break 1: Kia MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Rainbow Village Awards More Than $25K in Microgrants to Families in Need Rainbow Village's fifth annual Microgrant Award Ceremony, held on December 10, 2024, awarded nearly $26,000 to 28 households in need. Funded by the Better Together Women’s Giving Circle, these microgrants support recipients in achieving financial stability, repairing vehicles, pursuing education, and covering emergency medical or rental expenses. Over the event’s five years, a total of $102,604.32 has been distributed. CEO Melanie Conner emphasized the program’s role as a “hand-up,” not a handout, enabling families to regain self-sufficiency. This year’s ceremony, attended by nearly 100 people, highlighted its remarkable growth since starting via Zoom in 2020 with just 15 participants. STORY 2: Greater Atlanta Christian School Collects Food for Salvation Army Greater Atlanta Christian School has participated in the 11Alive/Salvation Army Can-A-Thon since 2012, and this year, its 1,800 students collected 28,730 non-perishable food items. These donations aim to combat food insecurity in Gwinnett County and beyond. On December 6, students from all grade levels sorted, packed, and delivered the items, accompanied by festive music from the GAC Concert Choir. Efforts throughout November included competitions and family-supported shopping, which helped surpass donation goals. School officials highlighted the event as a reflection of Christ’s love through service and generosity, emphasizing the true spirit of Christmas and the community's shared commitment to giving. STORY 3: Gwinnett will celebrate Hanukkah with five public menorah lightings Gwinnett County will celebrate Hanukkah starting December 25, aligning with Christmas this year due to the lunar-based Jewish calendar. The Chabad Enrichment Center of Gwinnett will host five menorah lightings across the county through January 1st. Events include Lawrenceville City Hall on Dec. 26, Sugar Hill's The Landing on Dec. 30, and Lilburn City Hall on Jan. 1, each featuring songs and Hanukkah treats. The main event at The Forum Peachtree Corners on Dec. 29 will include live music, crafts, dancing, and the lighting of a 6-foot menorah. RSVPs are encouraged. Partnering with Jackson EMC, Walton EMC, Republic Services, and Gwinnett County departments, the program transforms trees into mulch for parks and public spaces. Drop-off locations include select fire stations, with trees transported to Bethesda Park for the main event on January 25. Executive Director Schelly Marlatt emphasizes the environmental benefits, noting treecycling reduces landfill waste, prevents harmful methane emissions, and enriches the soil. Volunteers 14+ can register online to assist during the event. STORY 5: Murphy and Watkins feted as they depart Gwinnett's school board Mary Kay Murphy retired from Gwinnett County Public Schools’ board after nearly 30 years, leaving a legacy of growth and innovation, including the creation of 76 schools and the Gwinnett Educational Management System. Rerun: Using Solar Energy to Power Composting with Chris Seney

In 2018, nearly one-third of the 39 million tons of waste in California landfills was compostable organic material. Organic material – food and agricultural waste – releases methane, a very potent greenhouse gas, as it decomposes. As a result, California's Short-Lived Pollutant Reduction law, SB-1383, targets such food waste by establishing methane reduction targets and takes aim at food insecurity in the state. The implementation of SB-1383 is vital in supporting California's climate goals. Methane is produced when organics rot, and it is critical to reduce methane emissions levels as the gas is eighty-four times more potent than carbon dioxide in the atmosphere over a 20 year period. When implemented, SB-1383 will reduce California's methane emissions from organic materials in traditional landfills by an estimated twenty percent.SB 1383 also supports California's commitments to improving human health, creating clean jobs, and supporting local economies. Some of SB-1383 targets include: expanding California's organics infrastructure, ensuring all residents and businesses have access to recycling and organics collection services, a seventy-five percent reduction in organic waste disposal from 2014 levels, and that no less than twenty percent of currently disposed edible food is reserved for human consumption by 2025. The bill also requires jurisdictions to conduct outreach and education to all businesses, residents, solid waste facilities, and local food banks. Chris Seney is the Director of Organics Operations at Republic Services and has operated organic facilities for over twenty years in California. Seney helped lead the development of organics infrastructure and enactment of SB-1383 across the state. The implementation of SB-1383 has resulted in an increase in demand for composting facilities, which, in turn, has increased energy demand. Now, California has its first fully solar-powered compost facility,  Republic Services' Otay Compost Facility in Chula Vista. The facility runs completely on renewable energy, processes one hundred tons of organic waste a day, and helps the San Diego region meet the demands of SB-1383. Compost also supports California's climate goals as it promotes a “an economy that uses a systems-focused approach and involves industrial processes and economic activities that are restorative or regenerative by design.” A circular economy focuses on sustainability and  the lifecycle of materials, maximizing resources while minimizing waste. Compost is a critical part of a circular economy as the compost produced from recycled organics preserves natural resources, nutrients, and water that would otherwise be lost in landfills. Along with preserving resources, the composting initiatives in SB-1383 are expected to significantly support decarbonization goals. Whendee Silver, a UC Berkeley ecosystem ecologist, “has estimated that applying an inch of compost to just 5% of California's rangelands would suck enough carbon out of the atmosphere to equal pulling 6 million cars off the road.” Composting may be the next climate crusade and SB-1383 is leading the nation in efforts reducing both food waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Sources: SB 1383 Resources - CalRecycle Home PageChris Seney - COMPOST2023 - USCC Conference Site (compostconference.com)SB 1383: Cal Recycles Organic Waste Recycling Requirement | City of Corona (coronaca.gov)Organic Materials Management and Climate Change - CalRecycle Home PageUnderstand Senate Bill (SB) 1383 - Recycling & Waste Reduction Division - County of Santa Clara (sccgov.org)Republic Services (RSG) Opens Solar-Powered Compost Facility | Markets Insider (businessinsider.com)California's first fully solar-powered compost facility shines brightly, SCS EngineersCalifornia goes to war with food waste. Sarah Stallard is a 7th generation farmer who came to work with her uncles on a new farm near Las Vegas Nevada raising hogs. The farm is in partnership with the local waste and recycling company Republic Services. They lease the land from Republic Services and use food waste to feed the hogs. She says the partnership was formed “to help find a solution to organic waste." The family had always fed food scraps as pigs “are not picky about what food scraps” they eat.  Sarah describes the process of collecting, sorting, and feeding tons of mixed rations from casino kitchens and buffets, facilities such as an ice cream factory, and grocery stores. What the farm produces is marketed locally, and they do face challenges due to the lack of an USDA processing plant for meat in Nevada. The family's dream is to “complete the circle” through having their locally produced food offered in the casinos. She also describes how the hogs are housed and raised sustainably and humanely. There is a lot of attention paid to what they are doing to reduce food waste, and they are “willing to help and network with other farmers,” including hosting many tours. About this work, Sarah says, “I can feel really good about what I'm doing; it's good to know that I'm making a difference daily.”____________Thanks for listening to Fresh Growth! Talking Trash, Part 3

As housekeeping goes, trash is easy - you place it in a plastic bag and inside a plastic carton and a truck arrives and takes it away. But where those trucks end up is vital to the health of the Highlands, and to the planet. The hundreds of thousands of tons of garbage produced by residents each year that can't be recycled (or can be, but isn't) must be buried or burned, which contributes to global warming and air pollution. In the final part of our series, we examine what it would take to break through the "plastic ceiling" that's limiting the effectiveness of recycling. Recycling is considered one of the few national environmental success stories and has become part of the fabric of our everyday lives. Also: You're doing it wrong. "When in doubt, throw it out," not into the green bin, says Audie Holt of Republic Services, a fourth-generation trash processor, as we donned hard hats and safety vests and headed into the deafening, cavernous Republic Services recycling center in Beacon. Holt's great-grandfather came to the U.S. from Italy in 1898 and made a living by collecting discarded copper in his horse-drawn wagon. Every generation in her family since has been in the trash business. She resisted at first, getting an accounting degree and working on Wall Street, until the pace and excess became too much. "It was the '80s," she explains. Republic processes about 5,000 tons of recyclables from the Hudson Valley each month; the material is sorted, packed and sent to the processors that will break it down. But its staff also spends an excessive amount of time pulling items from the conveyor belt that should not be in the stream. Some of those materials can have serious consequences. The day I visited, the plant had just reopened after being closed for a few days to install technology that puts out fires caused by exploding lithium batteries. Because people keep throwing stuff away even when the plant shuts down, the staff was working its way through a backlog. Having never thrown a lithium battery into my recycling bin, I felt pretty confident talking with Holt and Dave Kahn, who has managed the plant since it opened 10 years ago. I know they also would appreciate that I had spent time browsing the company website at recyclingsimplied.com. It was there I learned that rinsing my tomato paste cans and peanut butter jars does make a difference. However, as Holt and Kahn riffed on the common items that can't be recycled but still end up on the conveyor, my smugness vanished. Those blue-and-white mailers from Amazon with the big recycling logo on them? Not recyclable. (Oops.) Shredded paper in a clear plastic bag? Not recyclable. Holt explained that if one of those bags makes it past the pickers, it will explode when it hits the machinery and rain shredded paper. (Oops.) The paper coffee cups with the plastic lids from chain coffee shops? Because of the coating on the inside of the cups, they're not recyclable. They go in the trash, although the lids go into the recycling. (I thought the lids were too small to be recycled and had been throwing them away and putting the cups in the recycling. Double oops.) But there were depths of depravity to which even my recycling habits did not sink. There were the diapers. Soiled diapers. "And not just baby ones," says Kahn as he points out an enormous pile of wet plastic next to one of the conveyor belts. Holt says that she once spoke to someone who believed the diapers were recyclable because the box had the universal recycle triangle on it (indicating the box can be recycled, not its contents). She also casually mentioned that Republic knows when deer-hunting season has started because carcasses start showing up. Thankfully, those stories are outliers. Kahn says that most of what comes into the plant is recycled. He can even find a buyer for the "higher-numbered" plastic containers, although the plastic in those has been recycled several times already and isn't worth as much. Plastic contai...

Sources: SB 1383 Resources - CalRecycle Home PageChris Seney - COMPOST2023 - USCC Conference Site (compostconference.com)SB 1383: Cal Recycles Organic Waste Recycling Requirement | City of Corona (coronaca.gov)Organic Materials Management and Climate Change - CalRecycle Home PageUnderstand Senate Bill (SB) 1383 - Recycling & Waste Reduction Division - County of Santa Clara (sccgov.org)Republic Services (RSG) Opens Solar-Powered Compost Facility | Markets Insider (businessinsider.com)https://www.scsengineers.com/californias-first-fully-solar-powered-compost-facility-shines-brightly-scs-engineers/https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-12-09/trash-compost-california-climate-change-lawhttps://www.epa.gov/recyclingstrategy/what-circular-economy#:~:text=It%20is%20a%20change%20to,manufacture%20new%20materials%20and%20products. https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/speech/methane-action-tackling-warming-planet#:~:text=Methane%20in%20the%20atmosphere%20is,also%20delivering%20air%20quality%20benefits.

The accident took place on campus at the intersection of Lumpkin and Baxter streets. Sources also confirmed to UGASports.com that Arik's Mercedes was totaled, but there appears to be no injury to the tight end. Arik was at practice Monday afternoon and he appeared to have no restrictions. Georgia is preparing for its season opener versus Oregon on Saturday. Arik, who returned to the team in January after sitting out last season, caught two touchdowns in the spring game and is expected to make an impact on the offense in 2022.                     STORY 2:police   What is the greatest need of the Cobb County Police Department? “More officers,” Cobb Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer said during a recent community forum. The department brought on nine new officers Thursday but is headed for a net loss of officers this year. The biggest reason, per Chief VanHoozer: retirements. According to the county, the department is currently short 85 officers, and the MDJ reported in May it employs more than 700 sworn officers. Chief VanHoozer said problems the department faced both prior to and during the pandemic are high attrition rates — losing staff to retirement or other departure reasons — and pay compression, which occurs when new hires' wages are similar to experienced employees as a result of the labor market outpacing raises over time. He thanked Lisa Cupid, chair of the Cobb Board of Commissioners, who was in attendance, and other county officials for helping to address pay for police staff. In its 2023 budget, the commission gave public safety employees a “step” increase, moving them up a pay level under the county's “step-and-grade” pay plan. This year was the second with a raise for public safety workers since the plan was instituted in 2020, and the department is working to address compression over a three-year period, according to Public Safety Director Randy Crider. Public safety employees not covered by the step-and-grade program — high-ranking police and fire officials, for example — saw an average raise of 3.3% in the 2023 budget. The department's successes did not go unmentioned during the forum. Deputy Chief Dan Ferrell, who oversees the department's special investigations and response division, touted the fact that the department has already taken more guns off of the county's streets this year than in any year prior. He also made clear one of his biggest priorities as head of special investigations.                 STORY 3:Recycle   City Council members face a decision on whether to keep curbside recycling for residents after this summer. If the service does remain, it will come at a cost. Republic Services of Georgia was the lone bidder to reply to an August request for proposals on the collection and disposal of solid waste, recyclables and yard waste. Two other companies attended a pre-bid meeting but declined to submit an offer. Republic Services, which is the existing provider in Kennesaw, would keep running the garbage routes but is proposing a price hike in recycling for items other than glass. To continue with full recycling service, Atlanta-based Republic would raise rates by $5.75 a month for every customer, regardless of participation, according to city Public Works Director Ricky Stewart. As a result, Stewart told Mayor Derek Easterling and council members at a Monday work session he recommends they approve the contract without the recycling program. Mayor Easterling said the issue facing council members at their meeting next week comes down to the contract they wish to approve. The monthly bill for customers is currently $29.15, including stormwater and streetlight service. As news has spread of a potential rate increase should recycling continue, citizens have begun reaching out to the mayor. He expects to hear more in the coming week.         STORY 4:Art  dk Gallery will kick off its September show with an opening reception on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at 25 West Park Square in Marietta. The fair, which will run for 11 days, will feature many family events, exhibits, midway rides, concerts and special attractions. The Miss first runner-up gains a $500 cash scholarship and the second runner-up wins a $250 cash scholarship.                   STORY 6:  Kell ***Audio For He's a Jolly Good Fellow  BED***  After two years without its annual honoring of retiring staff, the Cobb County School District hosted approximately 170 former staff to thank them for their years — or in most cases, decades — of service. Even worse are the times throughout our history that the majority has worked to erase the history, culture, and very existence of groups like Asian Pacific Islanders. Today we begin a series of looks at those moments in U.S. history. First up, we talk about the erasing of Historic Wintersburg in Huntington Beach, California. This 4.5 acre parcel of land is a slice of Japanese American history that spans three generations from the early 1900s through the early 2000s. However, the current owners of the land, Republic Services, are trying to ignore the historical significance and turn the land into a public storage facility. There are groups working hard to preserve history, but it's an uphill battle. To support, you can always learn more about Historic Wintersburg and donate to their efforts or write directly to Republic Services with some of the linked suggested talking points. Great Cleantech Stocks Despite the recent turmoil in renewable energy stocks, many analysts remain positive about them over the next few years. In this light, Tezcan Gecgil on investorplace.com has this article titled 3 Cleantech Stocks to Buy for a Greener Portfolio as well as the article following this. Here's some of what Ms. Gecgil had to say on each stock in this article. “1) Ameresco (NYSE:AMRC) It is a leading clean technology integrator offering energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. The company works with government and private enterprises, serving customers ranging from airports and industrial installations to hospitals and schools. Ameresco released fourth-quarter results on Feb. 28. Revenue increased 32% year-over-year (YOY) to almost $416 million. Adjusted net income came in at $26.7 million, or 50 cents per diluted share, up from $23 million in the prior-year quarter. Cash and equivalents ended the period at $87 million. The group's energy assets generated more than half of the profits in 2021. Analysts suggest the entry into utility-scale battery storage solutions represents a significant long-term growth opportunity. In addition, the integrator boasts a solid backlog worth more than $5 billion. Ameresco stock is down 32% year-to-date (YTD). Shares are trading at 30 times forward earnings and 2.5 times trailing sales. Meanwhile, the 12-month median price forecast for Ameresco stock stands at $85. 2) ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ:ON) It provides power and analog semiconductors as well as intelligent sensors for cleantech industries. The chipmaker generates two-thirds of its revenue from automotive and industrial end markets, primarily from electric vehicles (EVs). ON Semiconductor announced Q4 results on Feb. 7. The company posted record quarterly revenue of $1.85 billion, up 27% YOY. Adjusted net income stood at $478 million, or $1.09 per diluted share, up from $147 million a year ago. Cash and equivalents ended the period at $1.38 billion. Overall, gross margin improved from 33% in 2020 to 40% in 2021. Free cash flow soared 167% YOY to $1.38 billion. Meanwhile, management has signed agreements that will see committed revenue growth of more than $2.6 billion through 2024. Like many other tech names, ON stock is down more than 22% YTD. As a result, shares are trading at 12.9 times forward earnings and 3.5 times trailing sales — an appealing valuation level. At present, the 12-month median price forecast for ON stock is at $75. 3) Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) The group is regarded as an innovator in modern hydrogen and fuel cell technology. It develops hydrogen fuel cell systems that replace conventional batteries in vehicles as well as equipment powered by electricity. Plug Power issued robust Q4 results on March 1, generating a record quarterly revenue of $162 million. Net loss narrowed to $193 million, or a loss of 33 cents per diluted share, up from a loss of $484 million a year ago. Cash and equivalents ended the period at $3.13 billion. Hydrogen fuel cell technology is gaining traction worldwide. As a result, Plug Power has forged various partnerships to bolster growth. Those names include SK Group in South Korea, Renault (OTCMKTS:RNLSY) and Lhyfe. The agreements range from the promotion of hydrogen fuel cell EVs to building green hydrogen plants in Europe. Meanwhile, in 2022, management projects full-year revenue to increase 80% YOY to exceed $900 million. Despite stable growth in operations, PLUG stock has lost nearly 12% YTD. Shares are trading at 28.6 times trailing sales. Finally, the 12-month median price forecast for PLUG stock stands at $38.” End quotes. Incidentally, Plug Power just did a major deal to supply Walmart with 20 tonnes of liquid green hydrogen every day. ------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Great Cleantech Stocks Now, here's Tezcan Gecgil's second article, though this time appearing on Investing.com. It's titled Sunrun: 3 Trades For Investors Seeking Solar Energy Exposure. Here are some quotes from her on Sunrun. “Shares of the leading solar products installer Sunrun (NASDAQ:RUN) are down close to 18% so far this year and 47.5% in the past 52 weeks. By comparison, the Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE:TAN) has lost 2.7% since January and 16.1% over the past year… Despite the decline in share price, Sunrun is among the top residential solar panel providers in the US. In October 2020, it acquired competitor Vivint Solar. Thus, the company has seen volume growth in panel installations, especially in new homes, as well as in battery installations. Recent metrics Investors have also been excited about Sunrun's upcoming partnership with Ford (NYSE:F) on home energy storage solutions. Ford's F-150® Lightning™ truck will be used to ‘power homes and help accelerate the adoption of zero-carbon solar energy… Sunrun [will be] the preferred installer for F-150 Lightning home charging solutions in select service areas…' Sunrun issued Q4 and FY21 results on Feb. 17, reporting a quarterly loss of 19 cents, which was wider than expected. Supply issues meant the alternative energy group delivered fewer battery systems than forecast previously. Nonetheless, Sunrun added close to 30,000 new customers during the quarter, and the total number of customers went over 660,000. As a result, the annual recurring revenue was $851 million… Sunrun shares have an ‘outperform' rating among the 19 analysts polled via Investing.com and the 12-month average target price stands at $49.53, implying an increase of more than 71% from current levels.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Faith-Based Funds Many ethical and sustainable investors might want their religious or spiritual values reflected in their investments. This is a new article that can help them in this. It's titled Religious investors who want to buy into companies that uphold their beliefs have these options. It's by Russ Wiles on azcentral.com. Here's some of what he writes. “Faith-based investing is getting easier to do with the advent of more religious mutual and exchange-traded funds… The funds are still comparatively few in number, with relatively small assets under management… While Christian funds predominate among the religious offerings, Islamic funds also have gained a following, such as the Amana mutual funds managed by Saturna Capital. The Amana funds steer clear of businesses engaged in liquor, pornography, gambling and banking. They also avoid bonds and other conventional fixed-income securities, favoring dividend-pay stocks for income. For example, large holdings in the Amana Income Fund include dividend payers Eli Lilly, Microsoft, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Rockwell Automation and Pfizer. Another Islam-focused portfolio, the Azzad Ethical Fund, excludes those types of corporations as well as tobacco producers, weapons manufacturers, some insurance companies and corporations suspected of being connected to human-rights abuses. Different areas of emphasis Even under the same general religious banner, faith-based funds differ somewhat in their investment emphasis, especially when screening out companies. The Ave Maria fund family, for example, favors corporations that follow, or at least don't violate, anti-abortion Catholic values. The fund group said it avoids investments in several key areas — corporations engaged in or supporting abortion including Planned Parenthood, pornography, embryonic stem-cell research and companies with policies deemed to undermine the sacrament of marriage. Incidentally, advisers to the Ave Maria funds range from Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron to economist/Fox News anchor Larry Kudlow to Lou Holtz, the Notre Dame football coaching legend. By contrast, the new FIS Biblically Responsible Risk Managed Fund, based in Scottsdale, enunciates a longer list. This fund won't invest in corporations believed to be involved in abortion, contraception, embryonic stem-cell research/human cloning, human-rights violations, pornography, alcohol, tobacco, armaments or gambling… Much is in eyes of the beholder But in many cases, portfolio managers don't always have a clear-cut decision on whether a corporation would make an acceptable faith-based investment — not just based on business operations but also in terms of which groups or causes a firm supports with its philanthropic dollars or promotional efforts. For example, some Christian portfolio managers will blankly avoid companies that, say, donate to gay-rights groups or Planned Parenthood… Top stock holdings in the FIS Biblically Responsible Fund, which trades under the ticker symbol ‘PRAY,' include Palo Alto Networks, Apple, Medtronic, Ecolab and Zimmer Biomet. The fund also holds shares in two Arizona-based corporations — trash hauler Republic Services and GoDaddy, the technology-services provider for small businesses. Do religious funds sacrifice returns?  To the extent that religious funds aren't widely embraced, that could partly reflect a perception that, by weeding out stocks or bonds in certain industries, investors will sacrifice performance. Yet one study, from the Christian Investment Forum, showed solid results. The study tracked the returns of 35 Christian stock funds against other stock funds over the 15 years through December 2020. Christian funds gained 7.1% annually on average over that period, compared with 6.3% annually for the other stock funds. The study also attributed a slight performance edge to nine Christian bond funds against fixed-income funds in general, 4.2% annually compared with 3.8%... The study ‘dispels some of the long-standing perceptions that incorporating faith-based criteria, in addition to traditional investment criteria, is correlated to underperformance,' wrote the study's author, John Siverling.” End quotes ------------------------------------------------------------- Other Honorable Mentions—not in any order 1. Tim Ginn, General Manager at Republic Services, shares his unique journey from politics to waste management. Tim always had an interest in how communities work and what allows them to thrive. Much of this passion came from an early age and watching his grandfather's involvement in all the small town happenings and politics. From his first job of working for a small Texas town, to helping shape policy in the Governor's office, he learned the ins and outs of keeping a community running. Helping create, shape and execute policy is no easy task, but an important one. Tim believes that folks should be involved in their communities, because after all, it is a community's direct input that ultimately shapes policy. After spending the beginning of his career in public service, Tim decided he wanted to take a more private sector approach to his passion and took a chance on waste management. Not the normal job one would get after earning an MBA, but Tim says this was one of the best decisions he has ever made. He talks about the incredible people that he gets to work with and how the tenures in this industry can be decades long, because people know they are directly making their communities better. Running a waste management operation is an enormous endeavor, that requires a balance of process and grit. Tim dives into the nuances of trash, misunderstandings about recycling and the intricacies of running a landfill. What you may not know is how waste management sites are able to gather and replenish water, as well as harvest gas for reuse. Running this operation is more like running a mini-city. Tim is excited about he future of waste management and their focus on sustainability and environmental impacts. Without the hard work of everyday folks who keep their communities clean, our world would be a very different place.
