Seventy Quraysh were killed, including Abu Jahl — the man who had led the persecution of the believers for over a decade. And then the Prophet ﷺ did something that tells you everything about his character. He instructed the Muslims to dig graves and bury the Quraysh dead. These were men who had tortured and killed companions. Men who had tried to kill the Prophet ﷺ himself. Men who had driven the Muslims from their homes, confiscated their property, starved them, humiliated them.Grounded is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Bury them.No mutilation. No revenge. No public display of contempt. The body is the body — even the body of an enemy is to be respected.Only one man was not buried in the conventional way: Umayyah ibn Khalaf — the master who had tortured Bilal RA, dragging him into the desert sun and placing a boulder on his chest. When the companions tried to lift Umayyah's body, his skin disintegrated. They could not move him. Rocks and stones were placed over him where he lay — just as he had placed a rock on the chest of Bilal in the desert. The Arabs say: what you give, you get back. The Prophet ﷺ then walked to the grave of Abu Jahl and asked him a question — the same question the people of Jannah will ask the people of Jahannam, which we reach tonight in the surah. Did you find what Allah promised you to be true? The companions asked: Ya Rasulullah, can the dead hear us? He said: they can hear you as clearly as you hear me — but they cannot respond. When we visit the graves of our loved ones, when we make dua and say our salams, they hear us.Iman and Amal — They Cannot Be SeparatedAllah now turns to the people of Jannah: those who believe and do good deeds.Islam does not offer salvation through faith alone. Iman and amal salih must come together — and they are inseparable by nature. True iman will always manifest as good deeds. And truly sincere good deeds can only come from a heart that has iman. Without iman, the deeds may look the same from the outside — but the intention is elsewhere. You are doing it to be praised, to be seen, to be known. The action and the heart become disconnected.A sincere heart shows. It shows in what a person does when no one is watching. Publicly and privately, the same. That is the mark of iman. And those who say my heart is good while their actions tell a different story — Islam does not accept this. A good heart is not invisible. It is expressed.

Loving in the face of violence, danger, and distress is an act of defiance, as demonstrated in Lena Khalaf Tuffaha's achingly beautiful poem “Dukka”.  The Palestinian American writer spotlights seven aspects of love in action — between father and newborn, for example, a journalist and her audience, a pair of intimates dining out. She shows us the “million ways to love” flowing through her community and cascading through generations, centuries, millennia, as inexorable and constant as the ocean and as bright and surprising as a rare meteor shower.  We invite you to subscribe to Pádraig's weekly Poetry Unbound Substack, read the Poetry Unbound books and his newest work, Kitchen Hymns, or listen to all our Poetry Unbound episodes. Lena Khalaf Tuffaha is a poet, essayist, and translator. She is author of three books of poetry: Something About Living (The University of Akron Press, 2024), winner of the 2024 National Book Award for Poetry and the 2022 Akron Poetry Prize; Kaan & Her Sisters (Trio House Press), finalist for the 2024 CLMP Firecracker Award and honorable mention for the 2024 Arab American Book Award; and Water & Salt (Red Hen Press), winner of the 2018 Washington State Book Award and honorable mention of the 2018 Arab American Book Award. Chris welcomes back George Khalaf, founder of Data Orbital and candidate for the Arizona State House in District 3. The conversation begins with George's humble beginnings as a young data analyst working for Sean Noble, and how that experience launched him into becoming one of the few truly data-driven political analysts in the state of Arizona. From there, George shares his family's story of fleeing Lebanon in the early 1980s amid the rise of radical Islam—and explains why those same ideological forces are once again threatening communities across the United States. Chris and George examine how mass illegal immigration, facilitated by the Biden Administration, is reshaping American cities and accelerating cultural and political instability. They also break down the surprising reality behind Arizona's changing demographics, arguing that the state is actually becoming more conservative as families flee failed left-wing policies exported from deep-blue states. The discussion expands nationally, highlighting the collapse of the “moderate Democrat” myth, with New Jersey and especially Virginia serving as warning signs of what happens when radical progressives seize full control of state legislatures—leaving citizens stunned by the consequences of what they voted for. Chris closes the episode on a deeply personal note, asking for prayers for Savannah Guthrie and her family, specifically for the safe return and recovery of her mother, Nancy, who was abducted from her home over the weekend. He reflects on Tucson as the smallest big town in the world—where everyone knows one another—and how friends, neighbors, and the broader community are rallying together in prayer around the Guthrie family during this painful and uncertain time. Ustadh Muhammad Tim Humble begins explaining the book Faḍl ʿIlm as-Salaf ʿalā ʿIlm al-Khalaf by Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbal, laying the groundwork for why the Salaf were recognised as more knowledgeable than those who came after them - and by what measures that superiority is understood.
