On this Pentecost Sunday, The Rev. Canon C. K. Robertson, PhD, tells us that the miracle of Pentecost was not just that the many heard the Gospel in their own language but that they heard a word of hope and about the love of God that gave them a sense of belonging – a sense that they mattered. The miracle of Pentecost is the love of God, not just spoken but lived out. As beloved children of God, we are called to bear and share the love of God with everyone we meet. We are ambassadors for God and Jesus. It is our responsibility to show everyone we meet that they are the most important person on the planet. When we do this, Pentecost comes anew and the world is changed once more, one life at a time. (The Rev. Canon C. K. Robertson, PhD serves as Canon to the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Michael B. Curry. He is responsible for Ministry Beyond the Episcopal Church. He represents the Presiding Bishop at many International and Anglican gatherings. He also works with the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church and the General Convention on World Mission.) Midterm elections. General Convention. Lambeth Conference. Family dinner. A work meeting. Interacting with parishioners on social media. Seeing for the first time the bumper stickers and various car decals of the person you thought you really liked. From friendships, family, and marriage to church leadership to international politics, we live in zones of conflict. We can, and sometimes have to, avoid it. We can, and sometimes have to, manage it. But the people who lead peacebuilding programs at Jerusalem Peacebuilders believe you can always, with the right tools and time, participate in transforming conflict. What the heck does that mean? Transforming conflict. And without avoiding religion, politics, or anything else spicy and personal. That's the question we ask today. This topic is for everyone. How can we broach tough topics rather than protecting ever-widening safety zones of silence? The topics we avoid are often the things that make us human and able to know others as full humans. And they're often our soft spots. So if you're not a hider, and you're more a wear-your-opinion-on-your-sleeve kind of person, this episode is for you too. What if our soft spots are right where God is calling us to connect? Calling us to be courageous witnesses to relationship in polarized communities? How can we face relational challenges without running away or exploding? How do we deal with feeling triggered? And what are some tools we can use for investing patiently in the relational long run, instead of trying to fix everything now? The Rev. Canon Nicholas Porter joins us today with his colleague Sarah Benazera. Nicholas is the founder and executive director of Jerusalem Peacebuilders, an interfaith, non-profit organization that promotes transformational, person-to-person encounters among the peoples of Jerusalem, Israel, Palestine, and the United States. A long-time resident of Europe and the Middle East, Nicholas is an educator and Episcopal priest. Sarah is Senior Educator and Curriculum Advisor of Jerusalem Peacebuilders. She is a humanist, peace-activist, storyteller and educator, with years of hands-on experience in international and intercultural dialogue. They'll share their wisdom with us today. They'll also tell some beautiful and inspiring stories about the messy but rewarding experience of working with young people from some of the world's most contentious contexts. As Sarah and Nicholas tell us today, peacebuilding is a marathon. So let's join them to get hydrated, and get stretched. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/living-church/support
Church and Main: At the Intersection of Religion and Public Life
The General Convention of the Episcopal Church will consider an important proposal this summer. The measure proposed by the Diocese of Northern California would repeal canon law that requires those who receive communion must be baptized. “We believe that all the people are God's people, so it's not just the gifts of God for just baptized people,” said Martin Heatlie, speaking in favor of the resolution. Hospitality and inclusion are the values that are pushing the resolution. Those are two important values, but is that enough? Baptism and communion have been tied together since the early church. Does it matter if they become decoupled? Would the nature of communion and baptism change if they are split apart? Today, I welcome back Frederick Schmidt to the podcast. Schmidt is currently the Vice-Rector of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Nashville. He is an Episcopal Priest, spiritual director, retreat facilitator, conference leader, writer, and academic. In this interview we talk about the theology behind baptism and communion as well as Mainline Protestantism's obsession with countering fundamentalism. This is part one of a two-part episode. In the second part, I talk with Fred about abortion in light of the leak of a draft opinion from the Supreme Court that could overturn Roe v. Wade. A special guest with special memories. Reverend Canon Susan Russell is with us today, and shares her poigniant memories of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who passed away last week. Archbishop Tutu was one of the rare religious leaders of the world who stood firmly for LGBTQ+ rights and dignity. In 2005, addressing a congregation in Pasadena, he said: ""Jesus did not say,'I, if I be lifted up,will draw some.' Jesus said, 'I, if I be lifted up, will draw all.' All! All! All! All! Black, white, yellow, rich, poor, clever, not so clever, beautiful, not so beautiful. It's one of the most radical things! All, all, all belong. Gay, lesbian, so-called straight. All! All are meant to be held in this incredible embrace that will not let us go." Reverend Canon Susan Russell is an Episcopal priest currently serving as the Canon for Engagement Across Difference for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and as a member of the clergy staff at All Saints Church in Pasadena, CA. In 2012 she authored a resolution calling for the repeal of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) which was overwhelmingly adopted by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. And in 2015 she was part of the team successfully lobbying for equal access to marriage rites for both opposite and same sex couples in the Episcopal Church. She is a frequent guest on both local and national news and talk shows, her appearances have ranged from Good Morning America to Fox News; from Air America to CNN Headline News. Ep. 49: "Putting the Heart Back in the Valley by Putting the Fire Back in the Ground" feat. Bobby Fossek A place-based, indigenous approach to ecological restoration in eastern Oregon Cove, Oregon, is a tiny town in the eastern part of the state that most Oregonians haven't heard of. Surrounded by fields of conventional monocrops in the heart of conservative ranching country, it seems an unlikely place for leading edge cultural transformation, and yet it is, thanks to what might strike some as an unlikely partnership between Native Americans and the Episcopal Church. I first visited Cove, and met Bobby Fossek and his family, in the summer of 2017. I was traveling through the area with a friend on a foraging and wildtending mission that also took us to Hell's Canyon. Bobby's place was our base camp for a few days of picking and processing cherries from nearby trees, and we cooperated together in setting up drying racks and running their steam juicer. Bobby is a Walla Walla and Yakima descendant from the Umatilla Reservation. In his youth, he picked up some traditional knowledge from his father, but it wasn't until later in life that he committed more fully to learning and practicing the skills of his ancestors. Perhaps ironically, the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon provided the particular means to do so that he is now pursuing. The Diocese is based in Cove, and has been running the Ascension School Camp there for decades. Bobby attended the camp regularly during his childhood because his father married an Episcopalian woman. As an adult, he visited the place again, and heard that the Diocese wanted to “right some wrongs” with the indigenous people whose land they were occupying. He inquired and they ended up inviting him to be part of that effort. The background on this invitation is that, at its General Convention in 2009, the Episcopal Church passed resolution repudiating the Doctrine of Discovery and calling on congregations to support efforts by indigenous people seeking respect for “their inherent sovereignty and fundamental human rights.” Here's to hoping that other Christian denominations will also take up this banner to make up for past behavior. The Diocese now provides Bobby with a salary and housing, as well as making the camp's facilities available for events that he helps organize. It's an inspiring story of real cooperation and a sincere attempt to make reparation. Bobby and I conversed on December 30th, 2020, We talked about the ecological restoration he's doing at the camp and in the area, and how it encompasses more than the typical restoration projects sponsored by universities, governments or non-profits. Going deeper than science, Bobby's work is rooted in the traditional knowledge of his ancestors, and includes cultural values and language as essential elements. As he summed it up: "You can't restore the landscape without restoring the indigenous presence."
