Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley have been married and making music together as Yo La Tengo for over thirty years at this point, but in the spring of 1997 they recorded their magnum opus - “I Can Hear The Heart Beat As One”. They put Hoboken on the indie map around this time with legendary Hannakuh residencies at a bar called Maxwell's and collaborated on music videos with local alt-comedy luminaries David Cross and Bob Odenkirk. Containing krauty motorik jamming, fuzzy trip-bop and noisey blasts of scuzz alongside the more traditional straightforward indie rock guitar music, I Can Hear The Heart Beat As One is generally regarded as the best Yo La Tengo record, and is the most commercially successful LP from their oeuvre. I Can Hear The Heart Beat As One is also the 423rd Greatest Album of All Time according to Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, which means that Christopher and Liam have listened to it and now they're going to get their autumn sweaters on and smash it up octopad-style. For two producers whose respective sounds have dominated their respective regions (and the mainstream sound of hip-hop overall), you probably couldn't find two more different-sounding beatmakers than Mustard and Southside without some serious effort. But when they combine forces on Roddy Ricch‘s new single “Ghetto Superstar,” the effect is truly more than the sum of its parts. They couldn't have found a better vehicle to bridge the gap than the versatile Compton native, either; his slippery flow, which is inspired as much by the melodic yodel-rap of Young Thug as it is by hometown heroes like Eazy-E or YG, sounds as natural alongside a Mustard post-hyphy bounce as it does with a trap-tastic trunk thumper from Southside. But, just to spice things up, the trio also brings along a pair of perfectly-suited guests in G Herbo and Doe Boy, who both tend to defy the dominant sounds of their own respective hometowns in the same way. Month Upon a Time, Episode #6 (November): Look who I got for this month's episode: Ghetto Superstar Billy Porter! Billy has been a friend since the early days, and it was only a matter of time before he popped up on here. What an interesting journey and varied career he's had - everything from Star Search winner (1992) to Broadway musical theatre star to recording artist to film/TV actor to one-man-show diva to serious dramatic ekhtor, with some stops along the way for writing, directing, arranging, and choreographing. Kind of amazing.Right now he's gearing up to play one of the leads in the upcoming workshop of the new musical Kinky Boots, based on the film of the same name. Jerry Mitchell + Cyndi Lauper + Harvey Fierstein + Billy Porter sounds like a pretty fabulous combo! Additionally, he'll be choreographing the cool new musical Pop at the City Theatre in Pittsburgh and continuing his affiliation with the fledgling theatre company Exit Pursued By a Bear.
