Holy Cannoli everyone, I could NOT WAIT to release this interview and this conversation I had with the ridiculously talented and funny Gretchen Menn! Some of what you will learn this episode: *Why Gretchen is a badass *How the word "mundane" means very different things to different people *Three examples of magic/miraculous events *How we should all avoid joining cults AND, finally, WHY GRETCHEN IS A BADASS! (Did I mention that already, oh yeah, but it bears repeating!) Gretchen is a guitarist for the group Zepparella, (as well as a solo artist!) and is so exquisitely adept on the guitar (but it's not her only instrument) that my jaw dropped watching her play. Please check out these below to see just what I'm talking about! There is no doubt in my mind that Gretchen is changing the world for the better by showing up and kicking ass just in general. Fading by Gretchen Menn, featuring Kirsten Menn, soprano, and Emily Palen, violin Valentino's Victory Lap by Gretchen Menn, Directed by Eric W. Shamli Gretchen's website- please, do yourself a favor and do a deeper dive on this creative and intelligent human! Gretchen's Wiki I was so grateful to Gretchen for her time and her laughter. She's an impeccable storyteller and our conversation was electric!! (because, puns!) Please share this podcast with those you love, as well as those you only slightly tolerate! ;-) And consider leaving a rating or a review, they help others find the pod! Finally, here is your bit of beauty...yes, another gorgeous video of Gretchen doing what she does best, rocking out and making it look easy! I myself think it is such a good thing to witness other humans in their elements, shaping and changing the world for the better, with the magic they create! This is an interview with Clementine Moss, a founding member of the all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band Zepparella. They'll be playing a pair of shows at Petaluma's Mystic Theatre, June 28-29. From the beginning of her musical career, her goal has been to be onstage every night. Pursuing that goal has led Clementine to constantly tour the US and Europe in projects as diverse as Bottom, AC/DShe, The House Of More, The Solid, Francis Bakin, Stars Turn Me On, and Beaux Cheveux. She tackles the best rock drumming ever written with her own emotionally powerful style, bringing the Motown influence of the Bonham groove to the forefront. The profound musical connection established with Gretchen Menn (guitar), Holly West (bass), and Anna Kristina (vocals) creates the bond required to do this great music justice. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/backstagejazz/message

KnightressM1 is the hard-hitting rock band from Oakland, CA founded and fronted by violinist, vocalist, keyboardist and composer Emily Palen. KM1 anchors its sound in hard rock while pushing into metal, progressive, electronica and psychedelic ~ using the heavy, dark sound of Emily's violin tone to drive the band into an augmented, unique genre of rock. Emily was born in Midland, MI to cellist Lois and poet John Palen. She began to study classical violin at the age of 4 and piano at 5. She studied in her formative years with her mother, a serious musician in her own right and a very experienced string teacher. She then went on to study violin with Lyman Bodman, Michael Avsharian and Paul Kantor at the University of Michigan School of Music. She studied piano with Dottie Canfield and Patricia Willwerth at Central Michigan University. Emily moved to San Francisco and studied Creative Writing with a focus in poetry at San Francisco State University. Emily worked for many years as a freelance violinist, sound healer, studio musician and music teacher. She has performed most notably with The Foo Fighters and John Paul Jones and with many Bay Area bands including The Valence Project, Gretchen Menn, The Goldenhearts and Gregory James. Emily released her first solo violin improv album “Glass ~ Live at Grace Cathedral” in 2012 and her second improv album “Creation” a year later. Emily began writing for KnightressM1 in 2012 and has been cultivating her vision ever since. She recorded the debut album at the Foo Fighter home studio ~ Studio 606 with co-producer and 606 chief engineer John Lousteau. The album is set for release in 2019. Support the show

This is a super rad, and super unique episode of the podcast! I met Gretchen Menn and Daniele Gottardo at the Breedlove booth at Gearfest. All of us being primarily electric guitar players hanging out at the booth of an acoustic guitar manufacturer prompted a question: What is it about acoustic guitars that draws us in? What makes them so special? And WHY should us as electric guitar enthusiasts pick up the acoustic more often? Plus there is MUSIC played on this episode by Gretchen and Daniele! Check out Gretchen on her Instagram and Daniele on his Instagram. Huge shoutout to Breedlove for the guitars and support, and Sweetwater for hosting! Virtuoso solo artist and super sidewoman JENNIFER BATTEN gained renown in the late '80s when MICHAEL JACKSON hired her to rock stadiums with him all over the globe. They did three mega-tours together, including playing at the 1993 Superbowl halftime show for a worldwide viewership of approximately 1.3 billion people. Batten went on to accompany the great JEFF BECK on stage and in the studio, and has released thrilling solo albums under her own name. For this episode we head to the home of -- speaking of great players -- GRETCHEN MENN and DANIELE GOTTARDO (who were each featured on this podcast in earlier episodes), where Batten plugs in her Washburn Parallaxe electric guitar, jams with host JUDE GOLD, and reflects on everything from her past musical adventures to her current California co-headlining tour with Gretchen and NILI BROSH.
Gretchen Menn, Jennifer Batten and Nili Brosh join us to talk about joining forces for what will be an amazing run of shows. We also cover upcoming solo work, the benefits of study, the changing landscape for female guitarists, current gear choices and much more. This was a super fun conversation with three incredible musicians. And Elvis the dog. Jennifer Batten has not only performed with megastars such as Michael Jackson and Jeff Beck, she was also a ground-breaking advocate, virtuoso, and teacher of two-handed tapping as a guitar technique. Batten’s ongoing commitment to innovation drove her recent creation of a solo multimedia show that deploys her own video productions to augment and expand her musical compositions. Her latest release is BattleZone by Scherer/Batten. As a member of America’s popular, all-female Led Zeppelin powerhouse, Zepparella, Gretchen Menn is one of the foremost disciples of the Jimmy Page guitar style. But Menn is also an adventurous composer who has integrated Gypsy jazz, prog, metal, and classical into her own music and guitar playing. In fact, she resolutely studied orchestration for five years before completing her 2016 solo album, Abandon All Hope—a triumphant musical adaptation of Dante’s Inferno. Nili Brosh was a member of Tony MacAlpine’s band, opened for Yngwie Malmsteen during his 2013 USA tour, and was the lead guitarist in Cirque du Soleil’s production of Michael Jackson ONE. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Berklee College of Music—who went on to become one of the school’s youngest faculty members—Brosh’s most recent album is 2014’s A Matter of Perception, with a new record slated for release in December 2019. After two solo records and work with several guitar legends, Nili Brosh (Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil, Tony MacAlpine) is no stranger to instrumental guitar albums. However, her latest effort Spectrum steps beyond the expected and into a global exploration of musical genres. A literal spectrum, the album seamlessly blends from one genre to the next, starting in one place and ending up in a completely different one; all the while suggesting that music - much like humans - is all the same. Opening with the Spanish flavor of “Cartagena” and “Andalusian Fantasy”, Brosh effortlessly demonstrates the gentle power of conveying melodies on a nylon string guitar. Fusing into the European folk-inspired “Circus Wedding” and Parisian flavored “Rachel in Paris”, accordionist Hubert Gall makes a guest appearance and takes us further into the stylistic journey. What was Parisian blends into the chill R&B inspired “Solace”, which is where we first hear Brosh’s electric guitar versatility and soaring solos. The transition to a more fusion-esque and progressive sound occurs with ‘Retractable Intent’ and ‘Desert déjà vu', before finally moving toward the screaming dance-inspired heavy leads of “Djentrification” and “Primal Feels”. Listening in one sitting, one may feel the transitions sneak up on them, at the end arriving at the question “how did I get here?”. The official music video for the single “Primal Feels”, released September 3, follows a similar concept of diversity and comprises a multi-ethnic cast of male dancers joining Brosh to visually enhance the song melodies. With dazzling film-like cinematography, the dancers mimic Brosh’s musical vocabulary in a style reminiscent of those classic ‘80s and ‘90s music videos. With their visual interpretation of the strong melodic hooks of “Primal Feels”, the dancers remind us once again that people - like music - are all the same. “Primal Feels” music video is performed by Angel Xplosion Anaya, Amaleke Kidd Bradley, Nili Brosh, Manine Kim, Gabi Torres. Shot and directed by A&G Productions, Choreography by Gabi Torres Spectrum is performed by Alex Argento, Nili Brosh, Mariko Friend, Hubert Gall, Pete Lockett, Eli Marcus, Alon Mei-Tal, Gretchen Menn, Ray Rojo. Track Listing: 1. Cartagena 2. Andalusian Fantasy 3. Circus Wedding 4. Rachel In Paris 5. Solace 6. Retractable Intent 7. Desert Deja Vu 8. Djentrification 9. Primal Feels 10. Gretchen is not only an amazing player, but a brilliant person who’s accomplished quite a lot, including graduating college... becoming an airline pilot… touring the world with Zepparella… releasing two solo records (including a very difficult concept album) and 4 other albums in separate projects Gretchen was kind enough to share some personal history on this call, including the pressures of growing up in Palo Alto… the incredibly close relationship she has with her family… dealing with the loss of her best friend at a very young age… and more. Gretchen tells us about her varied influences, technique breakthroughs, Music Man guitars and passion for composition in this in depth interview. Also, our good friend Michael Dolce (Episodes 1 & 15) wants to give you some very cool stuff and we let you know how to get it.
Hello AaA Fans and welcome to another episode of your Amps and Axes Podcast. This episode starts out with Jeff describing a very cool article in PG about what the "music store experience" used to be and how the author (Jol Dantzig) sees that it might actually be coming back, in a different, albeit possibly better, way. Then they get right to the guest of the week. Guitarist for Zepparella, former guitarist for AC/DShe and wait for it... an entirely different career outside of music! Give a listen and help us welcome Ms Gretchen Menn. Enjoy!
