In this latest episode of In Theory, Disha Karnad Jani interviews Marc-William Palen, Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter, about his new book, Pax Economica: Left-Wing Visions of a Free Trade World (Princeton University Press, 2024). Palen begins his story in the 1840s, and shows how over a century of left-wing activists, politicians, and scholars imagined ways to transform the world through free-trade economics. People with distinct and overlapping politics populate this world, including anti-colonial nationalists, liberals, socialists, Christians, and feminists. Through an analysis of the evolving discussions of the meaning of free trade and protectionism for war and peace across British, US, French, Dutch, Japanese, and other empires, Palen traces the 19th century left-wing origins of free-trade economics and the contest with its right-wing counterparts to the establishment of the post-1945 economic order.

A new economic history which uncovers the forgotten left-wing, anti-imperial, pacifist origins of economic cosmopolitanism and free trade from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The post-1945 international free-trade regime was established to foster a more integrated, prosperous, and peaceful world. As US Secretary of State Cordell Hull (1933-1944), "Father of the United Nations" and one of the regime's principal architects, explained in his memoirs, "unhampered trade dovetailed with peace; high tariffs, trade barriers, and unfair economic competition, with war." Remarkably, this same economic order is now under assault from the country most involved in its creation: the United States. A global economic nationalist resurgence - heralded by Donald Trump's "America First" protectionism and resultant trade wars with the USA's closest allies and trading partners - now looks to transform over seventy years of regional and global market integration into an illiberal economic order resembling that of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Economic cosmopolitan critics of today's retreat from free trade have offered dire warnings that doing so would be catastrophic for global consumers and an existential threat to regional and world peace. But under what circumstances did this ideological marriage of free trade, prosperity, and peace arise? Who were its main adherents? How did this same free-trade ideology succeed in becoming the new economic orthodoxy following the Second World War? And how might the successes and failures of this earlier struggle to reform the economic order inform today's globalization crisis? In Pax Economica: Left-Wing Visions of a Free Trade World (Princeton UP, 2024), economic historian Marc-William Palen finds answers amid a century of transnational peace and anti-imperial activism that stretched from Britain's unilateral adoption of free trade in 1846 to the founding of the US-led liberal trading system that arose immediately after the Second World War. Over five thematic chapters, considering the period from different perspectives, and utilising archival research conducted in Europe, North America, and Australia, Palen shows that this politico-ideological struggle to create a more prosperous and peaceful world through free trade pitted economic cosmopolitans against economic nationalists. Cosmopolitans sought to counter the industrialising world's embrace of economic nationalism because they believed - much like today's critics of Trump's tariffs and Brexit - that economic nationalism laid the groundwork for trade wars, high prices for consumers, and geopolitical conflict; while free trade created market interdependence, prosperity, social justice, and a more peaceful world. Pax Economica argues that this cosmopolitan fight for free trade laid foundations for a century of anti-imperial and peace activism across the globe - and paved the way for today's global trade regime now under siege. "Situácia bude o rok, rok a pol určite náročnejšia práve z dôvodu zvýšenia záujmu o kúpu nehnuteľnosti a väčšieho tlaku na zvyšovanie cien," predpovedá Palenčár. KnightressM1 is the hard-hitting rock band from Oakland, CA founded and fronted by violinist, vocalist, keyboardist and composer Emily Palen. KM1 anchors its sound in hard rock while pushing into metal, progressive, electronica and psychedelic ~ using the heavy, dark sound of Emily's violin tone to drive the band into an augmented, unique genre of rock. Emily was born in Midland, MI to cellist Lois and poet John Palen. She began to study classical violin at the age of 4 and piano at 5. She studied in her formative years with her mother, a serious musician in her own right and a very experienced string teacher. She then went on to study violin with Lyman Bodman, Michael Avsharian and Paul Kantor at the University of Michigan School of Music. She studied piano with Dottie Canfield and Patricia Willwerth at Central Michigan University. Emily moved to San Francisco and studied Creative Writing with a focus in poetry at San Francisco State University. Emily worked for many years as a freelance violinist, sound healer, studio musician and music teacher. She has performed most notably with The Foo Fighters and John Paul Jones and with many Bay Area bands including The Valence Project, Gretchen Menn, The Goldenhearts and Gregory James. Emily released her first solo violin improv album “Glass ~ Live at Grace Cathedral” in 2012 and her second improv album “Creation” a year later. Emily began writing for KnightressM1 in 2012 and has been cultivating her vision ever since. She recorded the debut album at the Foo Fighter home studio ~ Studio 606 with co-producer and 606 chief engineer John Lousteau. The album is set for release in 2019. Support the show

Holy hell we're BACKKKKK.. Can you bloody believe it? Well, we can't either. Lot's has changed with the Bachelor - there's three men looking for love. Please meet **drum roll please** Felix, Jed and Thomas! Also, at the end of last season Osher sold all the old decorations on Facebook Marketplace and moved to the Goldy. This means Bach is in a new city, there's no red carpet or fairy lights and new roses. Oh, and the guys have to propose at the finale (we think, we're still working it all out). The show kicks off with Bachies selecting women (via rose offerings) on speed dates all around the country. Some tell the pipsqueaks to beat it (sorry Jed), some play tonsil hockey (hello Felix) and some cry (bless you Thomas). The rose holders all pack up their bags and travel to the Gold Coast to move in with Osher. Then it's time for the first cocktail party (ep 2) which is just Felix eating Tilly's face. We then have a group date/pool party, which is just Felix eating Naomi's face. You may have noticed there's a recurring theme here. Then we say goodbye to three randoms at a rose ceremony! If you're still reading this, 10 points to you. We're up to ep 3 and Tash drops the news that Jess (dating Felix) is polyamorous and has a boyf on the outside. Felix flips out and decides to head home and sulk as Jed takes Tash on a date as Thomas heads off with Leah. Then there's a group date at Dreamworld (nothing happens). However at the rose ceremony, the woman have a wild brawl because of how Tash behaved. It all kicks off and I think it's official, Tash is the villain of the season. Thoughts and prayers with the woman who left at the rose ceremony - Abby, Emma and Palen or Kalen or Falen.. In this episode, I speak to Kristin Palen a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, and Waldorf-inspired homeschool mom about the therapeutic advantage of using nature as a tool to support children. As a mother to a highly sensitive little boy, I know what it means to parent a child who does not fit into the ‘box' modern society has put children into. My mission is to help other parents of “that kid” feel less alone, more confident and more equipped by asking the tough questions to the professionals, gathering tools and resources and connecting with other moms who are wrestling with the same struggles. If recording my journey as I seek a clear starting point, community and effort to normalize a life with a highly emotional, sometimes out of control child, supports at least one parent, then my time is not wasted. And if it doesn't well, there's documented proof that moms deserve a glass of wine. Cheers Thanks for listening! It means so much to us that you listened to our podcast!
