Interview by Angela CroudaceFor Burning Witches bassist Jay Grob, the path to heavy metal thunder began with a red guitar—and a little persuasion. “Romana (Burning Witches' guitarist) gave it to me and said, ‘It fits your hair,'” Jay laughs. “But I thought, every idiot plays guitar! Then she handed me a bass, and I was like—yeah, that's more me.”Now a cornerstone of the Swiss all-female metal powerhouse, Jay's bass playing has become a defining force behind their sound. Guided by Romana Kalkuhl and her husband, she's never stopped learning. “You have to play continuously, even in your free time,” she says. “It never ends.”With their first-ever Australian tour about to ignite, Jay is buzzing with anticipation. “I'm so curious about the fans there,” she says. “Every country's different. We'll meet fans at VIP events, and I hope I can explore the food and culture too—maybe see a kangaroo!”Despite their fierce stage presence, the band's bond is grounded in friendship. “Off stage, we're like family,” Jay shares. “We BBQ in Switzerland, go shopping together on tour days off—it's real.”When it comes to songwriting, Jay jumps in after the drums are locked in. “Romana and Lala (drummer) get the riffs down first. Then vocals. Then I come in with the bass.”Live, it's the fans that fuel her fire. “Whether it's Wacken or a tiny club, when fans sing every lyric, that's the most beautiful thing.” But the real challenge? “Finding a washing machine on tour,” she jokes. As Burning Witches' fan base grows globally, Jay stays grounded. “We're just five crazy chicks spreading our love for metal. I hope Aussie fans feel the magic when they see us live. Real heavy metal. Real energy.”Australia, get ready—Burning Witches are about to set the stage ablaze.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast. Today we have another Metal Debate album review, looking at the new one from epic metallers All For Metal titled “Gods Of Metal.” Before we dive into specific tracks, I will highlight the aspect which really differentiates All For Metal, which is their use of two male vocalists who provide two different singing approaches. Antonio Calanna who gives traditional a power metal to hard rock vocal output along the lines of a David Bassin or Sozos Michael. Tim Schmidt gives us a baritone clean voice with false chord technique along the lines of what we've come to expect form Joakim from Sabaton. The album begins with an intro piece titled “Cry For Help” which has some building instrumentation and epic-sounding spoken words. The band ramps up the metal bluster to 1,000% on the second track and first full song, “Gods Of Metal.” The guitars are up front in the mix and provide some nice flourishes, although occasionally the keys push above them in the sonic spectrum. Track two is “Year Of The Dragon” and I freaking love this song! Maybe because I wasn't expecting to hear this approach, it really resonated with me. As with the previous track the synths are a touch heavy throughout, but this helps dampen the effects that otherwise might have been too jarring It's just a fun, upbeat track with verses that build and a singable chorus. “The Way Of The Samurai” didn't work quite as well for me. Despite this Calanna's voice is exceptional, and here he carries most of the vocal load with Schmidt coming in at points for emphasis. I especially liked Calanna's brief falsetto accents in place. The guitars throughout are strong and display some good riffs, or perhaps they aren't as diminished by keys as in the previous track. Everything builds to the chorus on “Temple Of Silence,” another strong guitar track. Schmidt's voice is dominant for this song with Calanna giving brilliant accents. In contrast, on “When Monsters Roar” Calanna takes the first verse and Schmidt the second, with the two splitting duties including some fantastic harmonizing on the chorus. “Path Of The Brave” gives a classic power metal-ish ballad. Calanna's singing is superb, but I wasn't a fan of the orchestral melody. Just a touch too sugary for me. This was followed by “Like Thor And Loki,” which on first listen it struck that I hadn't even notice we'd transitioned from an east Asian to a Norse aesthetic somewhere in the past few songs. The next one up is the synth-heavy “Valkyries In The Sky” featuring a strong vocal contribution from Laura Guldemond from Burning Witches. Guldemond is an insane singer and hell of a frontperson, and this song is constructed perfectly to highlight her voice. “Welcome To The Wasteland” returns to more standard All For Metal style with more trade-offs throughout by Schmidt and Calanna. But the chorus on this one is stellar – just a great melody and then with the double-bass kicking in a just the right time for extra emphasis and energy. Track 11 is “Who Wants To Live Forever” which features some great effort by both singers, outstanding orchestrations, and the twin guitars making it all work without overstepping their bounds. The album ends with “The Journey Will Not End” that matches the feel of the intro track. I really like how the band utilized Schmidt and Calanna's voices in a variety of ways, mixing and matching them as was appropriate for each track. The songs were extremely well-written and every element of each track seemed to have some purpose to it. I have one critique: this album is way too overproduced and slick, at least for my taste. There's no feel of rawness to the guitars, and even the sound of the orchestration is fat and soft. “Gods Of Metal” surprised me in a pleasant way, and the overproduction can be excused given the competent and engaging writing and performances. I'm giving “Gods Of Metal” an 8 out of 10 rating.
Interview by Kris PetersSometimes the best brand of heavy metal is the one that follows a straight line. While bands of the modern era generally tend to mix a plethora of styles and genres into each recording, there are still the die-hard old-school metalheads that subscribe to the old adage of if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.Veteran MidWest thrash metal outfit Conquest are one of those bands.Over successive previous albums, Conquest have flown the flag high for old-school metal, with crushing guitars and blinding speed punctuating their material. So it comes as no surprise then that their latest album Paradox - out now - is cut from the same cloth.More of the same, if you will, only better.Vocalist/guitarist Derrick Brumley joined HEAVY to talk us through more, starting with the reaction to Paradox thus far."So far really good," he enthused. "I mean, we're pretty blessed on how much attention it's getting these days. It's awesome. When you're a musician, and you're an artist at it, you hope for the best. Expect the worst, but keep pushing for the best (laughs)."We ask him to go deeper into the musical side of Paradox."The record Paradox is 16 songs, one is a cover of The Man On The Silver Mountain," he began. "Dio and Richie Blackmore early on was a big inspiration for me, so I was really into that old stuff like that. That's how that song found its way on the record. Just something I always wanted to record and that kind of spawned the whole thing. And then for the other tracks, we had a bunch of tunes written for the record, but then COVID hit, and the original drummer had left the band for a little bit because he had major personal issues. He was out of the band, then Lee came in and filled in the next two years - I should say became a member of the band - and just killed it on the drums. He brought this thunder to the songs, so we put all these songs together and ended up with 16 tracks after writing with Lee. It just piled in, next one, next one, and it was really cool and a really diverse record. It's very old school with a little touch of new stuff here and there. I tried to keep the production raw. I don't like overproduced stuff."In the full interview, Derrick talked more about the songs on Paradox, keeping true to your influences, writing and recording in the studio, the obstacles the band had to overcome in order to finish the album, a bit of history about Conquest, their upcoming show with Burning Witches and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

S7E11 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 14 March 2024. Last week we invented a new feature which, thanks to some audience participation, has become known as Twisted Twins. It involves playing two songs with the same name but by different bands. We continued with Twisted Twins on this show as well as the usual favourites The Diabolical Challenge and The Immortals. The new Judas Priest is out so obviously we continued to rave about that. There is also a new Pearl Jam album coming and we took a listen to the title track 'Dark Matter. Plus we have great news! Green Day, The Offspring and Fokofpolisiekar coming to SA in January 2025. This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases an artist in a way that typical < 5 min radio tracks can't. This week we had one of the world's most beloved bands – Pink Floyd and the 11-minute masterpiece off Animals titled ‘Pigs (Three Different Ones)'. Log overdue some might say, excuse the pun. On The Diabolical Challenge, we looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘K'. The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one. There's a literacy inquisition going on in Minnesota. Science of reading zealots are on a holy crusade. They are banning books, banning words, and banning ideas. Books, words, and ideas are dangerous things. They could enable people to think – to think about things – and to think critically. There is a law now in Minnesota, based on the Read Act, sponsored by Representative Heather Edelson that I am NOT to teach the 3-cueing system. I cannot say it. I cannot mention it. I cannot have it on my syllabus. It's illeagal. I can't even think about it. It's dangerous. It's a dangerous thing.

In this monumental episode we got to sit down with someone who has been a powerful change maker in both of our personal and spiritual journeys, Marianne Williamson. Marianne has been a leader in spiritual and religiously progressive circles for over three decades, published 15 books and is a 4 time NY Times Best Selling Author, and is the founder of Project Angel Food, a non-profit organization that has delivered more than 16 million meals to ill and dying homebound patients since 1989; originally created to help people suffering from the ravages of HIV/AIDS. Marianne also co-founded The Peace Alliance in 2004, and is currently running for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination. Marianne graciously sat down with us to talk about: Getting real with ourselves in this current moment in history and asking ourselves: Who do I want to be? How do I want to show up? What does integrity look and feel like for me? How it's time for women (especially American women) to shift the focus away from men to ourselves, and take accountability for our own role in upholding patriarchal structures so we may begin to do the deep inner healing and generational cycle breaking that is required to stop metaphorically burning our sisters at the stake. The challenge of choosing love and forgiveness in a time when it may feel almost impossible to pull ourselves out of fear and “othering.” Living your spiritual principles in your real, physical life and not just in the abstract. It's truly hard to put into words the impact Marianne has had on both of our lives. Regardless of your politics, she is someone who is transformative and inspiring.
