Bowstrings & Breakthroughs – NE OBLIVISCARIS' TIM CHARLES on 'Citadel', Classical Roots, And Pioneering Metal With Violin

Interview by Angela CroudaceNe Obliviscaris' clean vocalist and violinist Tim Charles sat down with HEAVY to reflect on the band's journey, the legacy of their landmark album Citadel, and what it's like bringing classical violin into extreme metal.Formed in 2003, the Melbourne-based band didn't reach the international stage until their second album, Citadel, released in 2014. “It was our first proper record deal,” Charles explains, “and that made all the difference. Suddenly we were in stores worldwide and able to secure booking agents and festival slots overseas.” The band's debut, Portal of I, was self-released, and though praised by fans, lacked the reach Citadel was able to achieve with the support of Season of Mist.Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Citadel was recently remastered by Mike Lewis, who also helmed the band's latest release, Exul. “We wanted to bring a bit of the Exul touch to Citadel,” Charles said. “It's slightly more open, a bit heavier, and filled with little details that bring new life to the mix.”Tim also shared his excitement about returning to the stage with the epic 23-minute track Painters of the Tempest in its entirety — a feat not attempted in nearly a decade. “It's still one of our best songs. Performing it live again was incredibly satisfying.”Known for weaving violin into every corner of Ne Obliviscaris' sound, Charles discussed how his classical training shaped the band's musical direction. “I was always inspired by guitarists like Jeff Loomis and John Petrucci,” he said, “and I'd think — how can I do that on violin?” With few metal violinists to look up to, Charles essentially invented his own approach, blending classical, jazz, and metal into a seamless force. The band's recent collaboration with Swedish act Imminence, whose own frontman plays violin, shows that the path Charles helped forge is inspiring a new generation. “It's been amazing to see more non-traditional instruments in metal,” he says. “Hopefully, there's more to come.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In this exclusive interview, Amott dives deep into the writing process, lineup changes, and the evolution of Arch Enemy's sound. Arch Enemy are gearing up to release their thunderous new album, Blood Dynasty, on March 28, 2025 — and fans of melodic death metal are in for a brutal treat. On this week's episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, Arch Enemy guitarist and mastermind Michael Amott sits down for an in-depth conversation about the band's latest chapter, revealing behind-the-scenes insights about the creation of Blood Dynasty, the departure of legendary guitarist Jeff Loomis, the addition of new axeman Joey Concepcion, and even reflecting on former vocalist Angela Gossow's lasting influence on the band. Blood Dynasty: A New Chapter for Arch Enemy Blood Dynasty marks Arch Enemy's 12th studio album, following up 2022's Deceivers. Packed with the band's signature blend of crushing riffs, soaring melodies, and blistering solos, the album showcases Michael Amott's renewed focus on crafting intricate yet anthemic songs that balance aggression with hooks. Tracks like “Empire of the Damned”, “Vultures of Tomorrow”, and the title track “Blood Dynasty” already have fans buzzing, thanks to teasers that hint at a heavier, darker direction — yet still unmistakably Arch Enemy. Michael Amott Talks Songwriting, Lineup Changes, and Legacy In the interview, Michael Amott opens up about the songwriting process behind Blood Dynasty, explaining how the new material came together in the wake of Jeff Loomis' departure from the band in late 2024. Michael also shares how new guitarist Joey Concepcion (known for his work with Armageddon and Sanctuary) was brought into the fold, adding fresh energy and technical prowess to the lineup. Reflecting on Angela Gossow and Alissa White-Gluz's Impact Of course, no discussion of Arch Enemy's history would be complete without mentioning Angela Gossow, the band's iconic former vocalist and current manager. In the podcast, Michael reflects on Angela's lasting impact on the band, as well as the continued evolution of current vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, whose dynamic vocal range and commanding presence shine throughout Blood Dynasty. Inside the Loaded Radio Podcast Episode During this candid conversation, Michael also discusses: How the global metal scene has evolved since Arch Enemy's inception.   What inspires him to keep writing and pushing the band's sound forward.   Upcoming tour plans in support of Blood Dynasty, including potential festival appearances.   His thoughts on the future and possibly writing a book. Whether you're a longtime fan or just discovering Arch Enemy, this episode offers an unfiltered look at one of melodic death metal's most important figures. Scroll down to listen to the full podcast episode. Who Are Arch Enemy? Formed in 1995 by former Carcass guitarist Michael Amott, Arch Enemy have become one of the defining bands in melodic death metal. Hailing from Sweden, the band gained international fame with albums like Wages of Sin (2001), Anthems of Rebellion (2003), and Rise of the Tyrant (2007). Known for their ferocious guitar work, anthemic songwriting, and pioneering use of female growled vocals, Arch Enemy has been fronted by vocalists Angela Gossow and, since 2014, Alissa White-Gluz. Over the years, they've built a reputation for delivering relentless live shows and consistently pushing the boundaries of modern metal. With Blood Dynasty, Arch Enemy continues to evolve while staying true to the blistering sound that's earned them a loyal global fanbase.

At 34 years of age, guitarist/songwriter Nili Brosh has lived the life of 10 guitarists.  Since graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2009, Nili has performed with legends in the truest since of the word.  Shrapnel guitar legend Tony MacAlpine, former Nevermore and current Arch Enemy guitarist Jeff Loomis, drummer Marco Minneman, and bassist Stu Hamm just to name a few. Nili has also been a part of Danny Elfman's band, the guitarist for Cirque Du Soleil's Michael Jackson ONE, and as part of the cartoon based metal gods, Dethklok.  Obviously, Nili is a VERY busy person and I was lucky enough that she took the time out of her busy schedule to talk to a dreg like myself.  Nili is a kind, funny, and super talented person and I loved talking to her about why sometimes being called a "shredder" can be annoying, how being called a "female guitarist" is also not a term of endearment, and other things.  To check out more on Nili, head to hear website www.nilibrosh.com Enjoy, y'all.

On this episode Brian is joined by Jackson Colt.Jackson Colt is the essence of 80's Rock reimagined. Catchy chorus hooks, melodic riffs and shredding solos echo through from the Golden Era of the Guitar. Raised on "Old School Rock”, Jackson combines a retro-retake with a modern fresh sound that booms through the ages for all target markets. After receiving his first guitar at the age of 9 in a second-hand store, Jackson starting learning to play songs by bands such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Who, Grand Funk Railroad and more. Jackson cites his family as his biggest influence on his Classic Rock influenced sound. Growing up with bands like Deep Purple, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Guns n' Roses playing in the house, it was easy to see what music he would write. Jackson's love for the guitar started when discovering Eddie Van Halen. Other inspirations for the guitar span from players such as David Gilmour and Slash to 80's shredders like George Lynch and Yngie Malmsteen. Jackson also has a passion for Metal music. Alexi Laiho has been another big influence of his playing as well as Jeff Loomis. For live shows, bassist Dean, drummer Matthew and rhythm guitarist Piet bring a high energy performance in reminiscence of those 80's Arena Rock bands. Each member brings their own personality to the stage, all coming from different musical backgrounds. Grinding on the underground circuit, the band learned to hone their craft. The band has also enjoyed playing the Soweto Towers on Halloween, multiple Speedo-Fests and frequent gigs with friends Black Cat Bones and Jasper Dan. After gigging relentlessly through the harsh lockdown and sharing the stage with several big names in South African Rock, Jackson Colt is currently recording his debut album with Dale Schnettler of Prime Circle. Jackson cites Dale as a big inspiration to his music career. The first concert Jackson ever attended was a Prime Circle show when he was young. There he met Dale who signed some drumsticks for Jackson and his brother. Many years later, they would meet again and work on the debut album together.Songs included in this episode:StrangersEchoesFind Jackson Colt here:https://linktr.ee/jacksoncoltrockFind CTMU here:https://linktr.ee/ConcertsthatmadeusNewsletter: https://concertsthatmadeus.aweb.page/p/f065707b-2e34-4268-8e73-94f12bd2e938If you would like to support the show you can do so by rating/reviewing us on Itunes and Spotify or by signing up at https://www.patreon.com/Concertsthatmadeus Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/concerts-that-made-us. Greatings metalheads – welcome back to another episode of The Great Metal Debate Podcast - today we're talking about Kvaen and their newest album The Great Below, which came out on March 25th. Let's begin dissecting each new song track by track. The first song is called “Cauldron of Plagues.” I love how the first 1 second of this song is silent; then, 2 seconds in, we hear Jakob breath in through his mouth before unleashing a long black metal scream by the 3rd second. It really lets the listener know that he is once again pouring maximum effort into vocal delivery. The rest of the song is exactly what you'd expect from Jakob – a specific tone to his raspy vocals that should be very recognizeable to true fans. The next song on the album is the title track “The Great Below.” It starts of with some finger tapping on the low end of the guitar neck that proceeds with some palm-muted rapid single-string plucking. This all takes place before the main, galloping riff that makes up the majority of the song. ‘Majority' being the key word, as we have a guest appearance from none other than Jeff Loomis to perform a guitar solo. Directly after the solo, the tempo changes slightly in a way that it's near impossible not to bang your head. While Jakob previously made nearly an entire album completely by himself, this time around he has quite a few people from the metal scene giving him a helping hand that he truly deserves. In this track titled “In Silence,” it's anything but silent. It is a loud and extremely fast paced black metal track that really gets in your face. It begins with an eerie, horror-esque soundtrack complete with heavy footsteps, distant chanting, followed by the human heartbeat. This is when the song picks up with the crystal-clean snare drum that has perfect pitch. The song features Nephente, who is the founding member of the Swedish melodic black metal act known as Netherbird. After seven minutes of chaos, you can prepare for total annihilation by track number four which is called “Damnations Jaw.” The opening riff is an unmistakable black metal riff played in a narrow scale with fast strumming and heavy distortion which can only be found in this subgenre. If it wasn't clear enough, a hellish screech fades in with it. This song features yet another legendary guitarist for the solo, Mike Weed from King Diamond. “Sulphur Fire” is the fifth track, that introduces the drums slowly but develops into a steady drumroll before double bass blastbeats. This time around Jakob plays his own solo, but the same can't be said for the sixth track which is entitled “Ensamvarg.” “Ensamvarg” is definitely my favorite new Kvaen song. Something about Jakob's vocals on this one reminds me a lot of the song “Black Dragon” by Dissection. Though the musical structure is absolutely nothing alike, I can't help but notice the way the vocals sound spaced apart in small bursts. “Your Mighty Has Fallen” is next - one of the few songs on this album where it's Jakob doing everything. It seems as though everything this band touches becomes a masterpiece. The eighth and final song on this record is “The Fire Within Him Burns.” This one features guest vocalist Mathias Lillmåns from the band Finntroll. It's a great way to conclude a highly anticipated release from a single talented musician who can hold his own beside bands with full lineups. I very much enjoyed everything in The Great Below, and would have to give it an 8.5 out of 10. Be sure to show your support by purchasing Jakob's music through the Kvaen bandcamp page or through his label, Black Lion Records.

A famous quote says, “A rising tide lifts all ships”, and that is precisely the plan Jeff executes at Momentum. Their unique social profit structure bridges the gap between those struggling to educational and employment opportunities to build on their skills and assets.  They achieve this through three key ways: They work with people to get better jobs. They work with people to create their own job by starting a business. And then they work with people to be able to manage and save their money so that they can really move forward financially.Listen to this episode to learn more about how income inequality impacts everyone, and uncover how Momentum is using economic activity to achieve their vision of a future where all Calgarians have a sustainable livelihood.

On this wee's episode of SIP Virtual Wine Tastings with Winemakers we talked with Proprietor Jeff Loomis of Loomis Estate Vineyards in Napa Valley. Jeff Loomis, founder and vintner of Loomis Estate Vineyards, doesn't like to be told no. When he purchased the majestic mountain property that would become his home and vineyard, he was told he couldn't grow Rhône varietals there. He's had a passion for Rhône wines ever since studying abroad and cycling through Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the South of France. Today, Loomis Estate Vineyards is the sole Napa Valley producer growing and making wine from 100% Rhône varieties. The grapes are grown on four acres, each of which was chosen for its unique terroir, offering maximum sun exposure, ideal micro-climate and varietal-specific soil conditions. Lead Winemaker Rudy Zuidema and Associate Winemaker Michael Andrews help bring Jeff's vision to life. Proprietor Jeff Loomis joined us on SIP to tell his story of persistence and tenacity and his new project, a result of the Glass Fire and a unique way to bring positivity to a tough year 2020. We know Jeff's humor and positive attitude will inspire you tonight. We tasted Loomis Estate Vineyards 2018 'Ember' Red Blend, available on https://bit.ly/loomis18ember
