Queenstown is waiting on a final signoff before lifting the town's boil water notice. Businesses and residents have been required to boil tap water for almost three months, after a breakout of cryptosporidium. UV treatment equipment has been installed at the Two Mile water supply. Mayor Glyn Lewers says all they need now is water regulator Taumata Arowai to give the green light. "We've done our bit by putting in the UV disinfection area, we've flushed the system, we've cleaned the tanks- so yeah, we're just waiting." The Queenstown Lakes District Council is on the brink of lifting its boil water notice. After a breakout of the cryptosporidium parasite in the resort town back in the middle of September 2023 residents and businesses were required to boil their tap water. That boil water notice has remained to today for those in and around the CBD as the council worked to install UV water treatment equipment at its Two Mile water supply. The council says that work is now done and it is awaiting confirmation from water regulator Taumata Arowai that it can lift the boil water notice.
Uisce Eireann insists that major corrective measures put in effect at plants in East Clare will ensure no more boil notices are issued for the region. It comes as the boil water order served for over 1,700 consumers on the Killaloe supply was finally lifted this week following a chlorination issue at the plant almost two months ago. Uisce Eireann however has now installed extra monitors , alarm systems and will committ to additional testing at both the Killaloe and O'Briensbridge facilities. Drinking Water Operations lead for Clare Darragh Conneely is confident the plants have been future-proofed.
Queenstown hospitality venues are finding ways to deal with the boil water notice, as tourists stream in for the school holidays. There have now been 31 confirmed cases of the cryptosporidium gastro bug among residents and visitors to the town in the past month. The local health boss has admitted there'll be more that haven't been reported. But businesses and tourists are making sure the boil water notice doesn't get in the way of a good holiday. Niva Chittock reports from Queenstown.
Boil water notices will remain in force throughout Queenstown, until the council can prove it's filtering protozoa, or parasites, out of the town's supply. Drinking water for around 45,000 people is drawn from Lake Wakatipu. National rules require protozoa barriers - Queenstown's Two Mile water treatment plant doesn't have one. The Kelvin Heights water treatment plant does, but there are doubts about whether it's working. Taumata Arowai, issued Queenstown's Council with a compliance notice yesterday - and the council has a deadline of 5 o'clock Thursday to respond. Steve Taylor from Taumata Arowai the national water regulator spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
On August 9th, lightning damaged the Municipality of Queen's water treatment facility. A boil water order has been in effect ever since. Our Community Contact Susan MacLeod talks about what that has meant for residents, businesses, schools, and the local hospital.
Queenstown residents are being told to boil their water, after at least eight cases of cryptosporidium - a parasite causing gastrointestinal illness - have been confirmed in the area. The notice covers all properties connected by the Council's Queenstown supply - including Fernhill, Sunshine Bay, Queenstown Hill, Queenstown CBD, Frankton, Quail Rise and Tucker Beach Rd, Kelvin Heights and Hanley's Farm. Arthurs Point, Arrowtown, Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country are not affected. Queenstown Lake's Infrastructure General Manager - Tony Avery - says the water is not confirmed to be the source of these infections. But residents are advised to boil it as a preventative measure. Avery spoke to Corin Dann.
