Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, Emily chats with Troy Lamarr Chew II, a talented painter with an ongoing exhibition at San Francisco's Altman Siegel gallery. Troy pursued his passion for art, eventually studying at the California College of the Arts and receiving a prestigious residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts. His recent work explores invisibility,  inspired by his time as an Uber driver. His work can be seen in notable museums and galleries. Troy  discusses his artistic journey, influences, and unique approach to language and representation in his art.About Artist Troy Lamarr Chew II :Troy Lamarr Chew II explores the legacy of the African Diaspora and its reverberations throughout American culture. His work looks methodically at systems of coded communication and how this is translated and mistranslated both within the Diaspora and the mainstream.Chew's rich artistic visual language draws inspiration largely from Black culture and its history. A highly skilled realist, inspired by European painting techniques, Chew uses these art historical traditions to reframe their exclusion of Blackness. In his Out the Mud series, hand dyed and sewn cloths from West Africa are replicated in a trompe l'oeil fashion, their patterns “torn” away to reveal portrayals of contemporary Black culture and resistance. In another series, Slanguage, the artist paints Flemish style vanitas picturing everyday objects, coded in hip-hop lexicon. His Three Crowns series explores the social history of cosmetic dentistry and the use of grills in hip-hop culture. The artist's lush and luminous oil paintings embody the energy of this infinitely re-mixed yet deeply rooted genre. In 2020, Chew was awarded the prestigious Tournesol Residency at Headlands Center for the Arts after becoming a Graduate Fellow from California College of the Arts, San Francisco in 2018. Solo exhibitions include The Roof is on Fire, Altman Siegel, San Francisco, CA (2022), Yadadamean, CULT Aimee Friberg Exhibitions, San Francisco, CA (2020); Fuck the King's Horses and all the King's Men, Parker Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2020); WWJZD, Cushion Works, San Francisco, CA (2019) and Stunt 101, Guerrero Gallery, San Francisco, CA (2019). We meet artist Brook Hsu. We discuss other worlds, the power of storytelling, the colour green, the drive to make paintings and making art at your own pace.BROOK HSU (b. 1987 Pullman, Washington) deploys and weaves the autobiographical and the mythopoetic into paintings using an array of materials, including ink, oil paint, industrial carpets, and off-cuts of ready-made lumber. The sources for Hsu's imagery come from her own observations, sometimes arising from art history, film and literature.Working across painting, drawing, sculpture and writing, her works aim to question how we define representation today, producing abstract and figurative works that employ a host of signs and motifs, recounting stories of love, pain and humor. Hsu says of her practice, 'I seek to understand what we value in life by asking how we value the world.' Taiwanese-American artist Brook Hsu grew up in Oklahoma, received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2010 and her MFA from Yale University in 2016. Elaine Cameron-Weir's contemplative objects made from carefully sourced materials allow us to consider the ways in which artifice and spectacle have been used to perpetuate systems of belief. Her major installation from the most recent Venice Biennale in 2022 invoked sites of provisional operations and religious reflection by transforming the gallery with modular steel subflooring, neon and electric flicker lights, and repurposed objects previously used for military and industrial purposes. In addition to the Venice Biennale, Cameron-Weir recently opened a solo exhibition at Hannah Hoffman in Los Angeles, CA. Other solo shows from the past two years include the SCAD Museum of Art (2022) and the Henry Art Gallery University of Washington (2021). Recently her work was on view at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum as part of an important exhibition titled “New Time: Art and Feminisms in the 21st Century.” Other select solo exhibitions include "exhibit from a dripping personal collection," Dortmunder Kunstverein (2018); “Outlooks: Elaine Cameron-Weir,” Storm King Art Center, New York (2018) where the artist installed a steel mesh sphere for motorcycle stunts known as “globe of death” on the top of a hill; and “viscera has questions about itself,” New Museum, New York (2017). A new research paper was published in Oncotarget's Volume 13 on September 28, 2022, entitled, “Genomic alterations predictive of poor clinical outcomes in pan-cancer.” Genomic alterations are highly frequent across cancers, but their prognostic impact is not well characterized in pan-cancer cohorts. In this new study, researchers Crystal S. Seldon, Karthik Meiyappan, Hannah Hoffman, Jimmy A. Guo, Neha Goel, William L. Hwang, Paul L. Nguyen, Brandon A. Mahal, and Mohammed Alshalalfa from the University of Miami, Massachusetts General Hospital, Broad Institute of MIT, University of California San Francisco, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital used pan-cancer cohorts from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the MSK-IMPACT study to evaluate the associations of common genomic alterations with poor clinical outcome. “There is growing interest in genomic profiling (i.e. tumor mutations, copy number (CN) alterations) for cancer therapy and precision oncology to inform treatment decisions and identify patients for relevant clinical trials [1].” Full press release - https://www.oncotarget.net/2022/10/04/oncotarget-genomic-alterations-predictive-of-poor-clinical-outcomes-in-pan-cancer/ DOI: https://doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.28276 Correspondence to: Mohammed Alshalalfa - mohamed.alshalalfa@gmail.com Keywords: genomic alterations, TP53, TCGA, poor prognosis About Oncotarget: Oncotarget (a primarily oncology-focused, peer-reviewed, open access journal) aims to maximize research impact through insightful peer-review; eliminate borders between specialties by linking different fields of oncology, cancer research and biomedical sciences; and foster application of basic and clinical science. Heather & Vincent, November 2018 Heather Rasmussen was born in Santa Ana, CA in 1982 and lives in Los Angeles. She received a Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA in 2007 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of California, Irvine, CA in 2004. She grew up dancing classical ballet spent summers at intensive programs around the country. While in high-school, she was part of the professional company, Ballet Unlimited, who participated in the Southwest Regional Dance America Festivals. While at UC Irvine, she discovered photography and left the dance world. She was encouraged to apply to CalArts, where she was then was mentored by the artist Allan Sekula. She currently works in the mediums of photography, video, sculpture and installation. Rasmussen’s work has been the subject of one-person exhibitions at the Weingart Gallery, Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA (2015); California Museum of Photography, Riverside, CA (2015); and Angels Gate Cultural Center, San Pedro, CA (2012) and a three-person exhibition at The Art Institute of Chicago, IL (2011). Solo gallery exhibitions include Pile/Plié at The Pit, Glendale, CA (2018) and Body Variations at ACME., Los Angeles, CA (2017). Her work has been featured in thematic exhibitions such as Solar Flare, Torrance Art Museum, Torrance (2018);  Touchpiece, Hannah Hoffman, Los Angeles, CA (2017); Input/Output, Sycamore Gallery, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH (2014); Trouble with the Index, California Museum of Photography, Riverside, CA (2014); The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco, CA; (2014); Horizon Variations, Camera Club New York, NY (2012); Curious Silence, Brand Library & Arts Center, Glendale, CA (2011); Exposure, The Art Institute of Chicago, (2011), 31 Women in Art Photography, Affirmation Arts Foundation, New York, NY (2010); and Salty Dog Bites the Hand, Angels Gate Cultural Center, San Pedro, CA (2008). As a dancer, woman, and new mother, Rasmussen’s work asks the question “How does this body move and rest within spaces among accumulated objects?” Her work can be thought of as still-lifes, but they are also documents of deterioration, movement and experimentation using her body alongside other objects. A vegetable echoes a limb, something cumbersome becomes sexual, something inanimate becomes invigorated. Sometimes just the act of moving a mirror so it reflects a fragment of a photograph on the opposite wall of the studio changes the content of an image. Recently Rasmussen photographed her changing body through the stages of pregnancy and post-birth, linking further the relationship of life and death with the life cycle of the large vegetables. She gains inspiration from the artists Hans Breder, René Magritte, Simone Forti, JoAnn Callis, Yves Tanguy and Andre Kertész. Notable awards include an Emergency Grant from the Foundation of Contemporary Art in 2014 and the Dean’s Reserve Fund award for the School of Art at CalArts in 2007. Press includes reviews in 2017 in the Los Angeles Times and Hyperallergic.com and ArtSlant, as well as The New Yorker in 2015. Rasmussen’s work can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA. Rasmussen has 4 videos currently on view at Ray’s + Stark bar monitors at LACMA through August 6, 2019, and will be showing an installation of works in Cindy Rehm’s show These Creatures, at the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art in San Bernardino, opening September 9, 2019, reception for the artists on September 10 from 6 to 8pm.
