Travis Bornstein is the father of Tyler who died at age 23 of a Fentanyl overdose. Tyler had been successful in school and sports, but injury and the subsequent surgeries brought on an addiction to opioids which eventually moved to heroin. This began 6 years of addiction and relapse. The family did everything it could to provide a path to recovery, but eventually Tyler ended up with Heroin laced with Fentanyl. The person he was using with panicked, and left him to die in a vacant lot. The immense grief overwhelmed Travis and his family. It was his daughters that found the first outlet for their grief by bringing Tyler's story to their school and starting Hope United, their answer to the plague that had taken their brother. Then Travis used his own voice to share Tyler's story at a union conference and speak about the problem facing their community. He raised 1 million dollars in donations in a little over an hour. The family has used their platform and their immense effort to create “Tyler's Redemption Place” a recovery community organization which will open this year. The mission is to treat the whole person, without any time limit, so they can truly receive the help they need to heal.Episode ResourcesConnect with TravisWebsite | hopeunited.lifeFacebook | @HopeUnited.lifeInstagram | @hopeunited.lifeConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastYouTube | The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok | @ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastLionrock ResourcesLionrock Life Mobile App | lionrock.life/mobile-appSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings

Ben Higgins is best known from season 20 of ABC's hit series, “The Bachelor,” where he opened himself up to millions of viewers, giving them the chance to truly get to know him. Since “The Bachelor,” Ben has been keeping up with a number of projects with the help of some of his closest friends. In November of 2019 Ben teamed up with chef Blake Edmunds to open up his second restaurant “Mister Oso”. Today’s episode of the Unstoppable Entrepreneur Show features Ben Higgins, who is best known for starring in the 20th season of the Bachelor. Ben and Kelly discuss how he went from starting Humanity and Hope United, to being the Bachelor, to starting Generous Coffee, to writing a book. Ben’s time on the Bachelor led to an enhanced social media platform that he now uses to speak out and share his personal experiences with mental health, generosity, and how we can show up as a more empathetic, loving, kind, and supportive human race. He also breaks down the four sections of his book, “Alone in Plain Sight: Searching for Connection When You're Seen but Not Known”: our connection with self, the power of community, the deconstruction of our culture’s fairy-tale view of love, and our connection with God. If you have one takeaway from this episode, Ben wants it to be this: We all have unique gifts and talents, and it’s our purpose on earth to use those talents to make the world a better place. On this episode of the podcast, I sit down with Riley Fuller, President and Founder of a nonprofit that is close to my heart, Humanity and Hope United Foundation. You may have heard me talk about it once or twice in some past episodes! Humanity and Hope is a nonprofit organization that works to partner with and assist underserved communities in remote parts of Honduras. They partner with the people of each village to achieve sustainable change and they focus on the needs of each specific individual rather than implementing a single issue or approach. Riley and the leaders of Humanity and Hope believe the Hope itself can be contagious and that is can be best spread by utilizing the innate talents of individuals to make others lives better.During this conversation, Riley and I dive deep into his life before humanity and hope. We speak about how Riley opened his eyes to realities that he could not fathom before traveling to Honduras. We speak about how his soul changed from being a quote unquote selfish young person who only cared about making money to becoming someone so generous who's life's work is to serve others. "We try to balance how to pull at people's heartstrings about growing corn or growing beans, or growing papayas.. when people learn about how to make this mission sustainable, then they understand."Welcome to episode #5 of the podcast! On this episode, we speak with Beau Schmaltz. Beau and I met during a trip to Honduras with a nonprofit called Humanity and Hope United. It was during one morning at a baleadas cafe that I learned that he was a chemical engineer with a passion for service. Through his current work at a company called POET, a leader in the sustainable energy industry, he became involved with a nonprofit called Seeds of Change. Seeds of Change focuses on alleviating poverty in low resource settings through power of education and agriculture. They do this by focusing on three pillars: Mission Hope, Mission Grow, and Mission Breathe.During this episode, we speak about how Seeds of Change was founded. We also speak on why honest leadership is so important in the areas non-profits partner with to create a sustainable change. We also speak about how most times it's important to build lasting relationships with the families you serve before working on tangible solutions._____________________________________________________________________Connect with Beau!Email - Beau.Schmaltz@poet.comPitch an idea!Email Alicia Elmamouni - a.elmamouni@seedsofchange.orgEmail Macy Kaiser - m.kaiser@seedsofchange.orgLearn more about POET and Seeds of Changewww.poet.comwww.seedsofchange.org/_____________________________________________________________________Make sure to hit that follow button to stay up to date with new episodes!I would love to hear from you:Email me at hetal@globalhealthpursuit.comWebsite: globalhealthpursuit.comInstagram: @globalhealthpursuitTwitter: @hetalbamanFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/globalhealthpursuit/Avid listener? Ben Higgins is best known from season 20 of ABC’s hit series, “The Bachelor,” where he opened himself up to millions of viewers, giving them the chance to truly get to know him. The opportunity ultimately led to an enhanced platform that he now uses to share what he is most passionate about with others – his faith, his hope for humanity and his love of sports. Since “The Bachelor,” Ben has been keeping up with a number of projects with the help of some of his closest friends. Most recently, Ben founded Generous International, a for purpose company dedicated to contributing profits to social issues around the world, starting with a cup of coffee. With a vision to change the way society thinks of consumer products, all Generous merchandise is designed specifically to create and multiply good in the world. Whether creating jobs, feeding children or improving education, it begins with giving back in order to build a world that we all want to live in. In 2017 Ben created a lifestyle blog, The Mahogany Workplace, where people are free to openly and honestly discuss all things life, love and everything in between. From style to travel to world views, Ben and his team of refreshing contributors cover it all, with the one common thread being complete transparency about how life can truly be – a series of ups and downs, joys and sorrows, triumph and pain. Ben stays connected with his loyal Bachelor following with his iHeartMedia podcast, “Almost Famous,” which he co-hosts with his friend and former Bachelor contestant, Ashley Iaconetti. It’s the perfect destination for fans to get an inside perspective on the popular franchise as they break down the current Bachelor season in addition to discussing pop culture, offering relationship advice and allowing listeners to keep up with their personal lives. Unless you've lived under a rock, you know Ben Higgins from ABC's The Bachelor. But what you may not know is that this man has a heart for social good, faith, and leadership. He understands that purchasing power can and should be used to make an impact. This episode, I talk with Ben Higgins about life on The Bachelor, his faith, and his work creating sustainable change through his for profit organization, Generous Coffee. Life After The Bachelor When you're on The Bachelor, you all of a sudden have an audience and millions of eyes are on your life. While it's so easy to use this newfound fame and get a big head, Ben has committed to making a difference in the world. Ben remembers a time when he enjoyed having all eyes on him as the bachelor, but it didn't last. “The euphoric feeling of having your ego stroked ended- I was left to question a lot of things” Faith and Work He recognizes the partnership between faith and action. Instead of just praying things into existence, which is important, he knows we have vital roles to play in creating a world and culture of hope and change. “I don't think we give ourselves enough credit sometimes.” “God has entrusted us with skills, intelligence, and wisdom to get to a place where we can be good stewards for the world He has created for us.” We have to deconstruct our beliefs to strengthen our why's and live with integrity. Ben often thinks back to this quote: “Live your life like you'll be written about in the Bible.” Creating Lasting Change Ben's friend Riley Fuller started a non-profit called Humanity and Hope United, which focuses on ending poverty in Honduras. Ben and Riley witnessed the poverty and saw that they were being helped, but not in a way that would create lasting change. He remembered being angry about what he saw for years after until Riley suggested they partner with these countries. They partnered with communities in Honduras to support them in reaching their goals. Six years in he was overwhelmed with the realization that small businesses were succeeding and children were graduating school. Today's ceiling is tomorrow's floor. Ben challenges himself and others to never get complacent, “How far have we come, and how far can we go?” Generous Coffee He recognizes that The Bachelor gave him a platform that allowed him to get funding for their project, but that it won't last forever. Two years ago, he and Riley started Generous Coffee as a for-profit business to help fund the non-profit. Now, Ben is the operating president, chief executive officer, and co-founder along with Drew Scholl and Riley Fuller. Their coffee comes from nine different countries. T-shirts are made from water bottles by women in Haiti. Beyond non-profits, there are so many for-profits that donate a portion of their profits to causes they believe in, like Newman's Own. Following in the footsteps of this, Ben is looking forward to continuing his work with Generous Coffee. “When you see a purpose, no matter how big or small, stay in your lane and pursue it and complete it and do it with vigor.” This week's episode is brought to you by Generous Coffee. It creates a community that creates sustainable change and believes in the unique power of the human being. It is a for-profit business and they're always partnering with organizations that share their values. Join the movement! Go to generousmovement.com to see their products and what they're up to. The site, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, offers genuinely free crowdfunding services for global, public health related projects, charging only credit card processing. Unlike some crowdfunding sites, CaringCrowd does not ask your donors to fund the operation. Johnson & Johnson funds that so it is truly free. Humanity and Hope United is using the money it raised to drill a well in a remote Honduran village that lacks a source of clean water. Most people there are sick most of the time because of it. Dr. Rodrigo Diaz, a volunteer, explains that clean water to significantly reduce the incidence of diarrhea and other gastrointestinal diseases that hamper learning in school and productivity at work. Most widely known for his roles on ABC’s The Bachelorette and The Bachelor, you will soon realize that my guest, Ben Higgins, is more than just a reality TV star. After his time on The Bachelor, he used that platform to help others and create a dynamic business model in the process. And it all began with his friend’s non-profit organization called Humanity and Hope United. Believing whole-heartedly in this organization’s mission to assist underserved villages in remote parts of Honduras, Ben wanted to ensure the longevity and success of it. And that’s when they got the idea to create a for profit business with the purpose of supporting a non-profit. This business model is pure genius and he predicts that it’s only the beginning for other future businesses. I cannot wait for you to hear Ben’s story and how he seems to embody all things generosity. It’s no surprise that relating, connecting and being generous with people are so important to him. From his business model to his blog and podcast, Ben gets super transparent in an attempt to let people know that at the heart we’re all the same and that we all have a passion to share with the world. Don’t be surprised if this episode blows your mind and likely gives you a nudge to give back more, too. -- Question Highlights: What was life like before The Bachelor vs. after? Growing up, what did you think you’d be doing as an adult? Was your new-found fame easier to deal with because of your desire to work with people? How did you learn to cope with trolls and negative comments that came with your fame? Do you feel you have a responsibility to use your influence for good or is it a choice? How does your podcast give back? How have your parents dealt with your fam? What makes for a successful blog? What is one of the toughest parts of running a non-profit business? In This Episode We Talk about: The unexpected and difficult growth that happened during Ben’s time on The Bachelor Dealing with sudden fame The power in knowing that you can’t please everyone Why it’s important to always be aware of what your intentions are The common desire that everyone wants to be loved and not be alone The importance of authenticity in a blog How Ben used The Bachelor platform to create Generous International How Generous International was founded Why Generous Coffee can compete with big brands like Starbucks Why future businesses will need a social cause tied to them How Generous International works with Humanity and Hope United to develop communities and make sustainable change in the world Why the non-profit world needs your passion And so much more… Ben’s Thoughts… “Stay open to the criticism, but also be confident enough to know that you may have to reject it sometimes because you know what your intentions are.” “You can live life simple. It doesn’t have to be hard.” “When much is given, much is expected.” “Profit is sacred.” “The more profit we make, the bigger the long-term impact.” “From start to finish, we want to be generous.” “When we are loving on others and building relationships, life makes more sense.” “No one should be apologetic about wanting to live a great story.” -- Ben Higgins is from Winona Lake, IN but currently calls Denver, CO home.
