What does it look like to connect everyday interactions to broader social dynamics? To use our knowledge of interpersonal communication to create the kinds of organizations, communities, and systems we want to make?...Today, Abbie and Kate talk about a relational approach to disorganizing systemic violence in organizations, exploring themes from Kate's new book Transforming Trauma to discuss different ways of knowing (and not knowing) in our bodies, minds, and relationships; flexibility and agility in organizations when responding to trauma; and recognizing discourses that create fearful or curious responses to uncertainty. ...Kate Lockwood Harris, PhD, is an internationally recognized communication scholar, writer, and consultant. Her award-winning research focuses on the relationship between violence and communication. In her most recent book, Transforming Trauma: A Relational Approach to Disorganizing Systemic Violence, Dr. Harris shows how trauma gets stuck in an organization's practices and policies—not just in its people. Moreover, she offers guidance for addressing this organized trauma. In addition to this work, Dr. Harris has published more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters in edited collections, and she regularly speaks to audiences in the United States and across the globe. Most recently, Dr. Harris has been authoring the monthly public essay series, CommuniKate with Kate Lockwood Harris. Each essay shows how shifts in everyday interactions can create not only thriving relationships and organizations but also a more just world. Dr. Harris offers individual coaching for people who want to grow their personal and professional communication skills, and she consults with organizations to build climates where violence is rare and where people flourish.  Kate Lockwood Harris is Associate Professor of Communication Studies and a McKnight Presidential Fellow. She uses critical, feminist, and intersectional perspectives to answer the question, “How are violence and communication related?” Dr. Harris assumes that violence is a symptom of inequity, so she pays close attention to gender, race, and related systems of difference. Her research on organizational responses to sexual assault has been widely published in management, communication, cultural studies, and feminist outlets. Her first book, Beyond the Rapist: Title IX and Sexual Violence on US Campuses (Oxford University Press), was recognized with the 2020 Book Award from the European Group for Organizational Studies....Stories Lived. According to Pralhad Thapa, Department Manager at Mitutoyo Europe, an expert in dimensional metrology and automation: “We are confident we can address these issues for our customers, providing unattended measurement solutions that are easy to operate and available at a reasonable price.” In a presentation, it was this opening gambit that embodies both the philosophy of the new SmartMeasure AL system and Mitutoyo's commitment to precision. Building upon decades of expertise in CMMs, this turnkey solution addresses the fundamental pain points expressed by customers across diverse industrial sectors. Predicting the Market Demands The persistent shortage of skilled manpower has created operational bottlenecks, whilst increasing quality demands have elevated the importance of precision measurement. Traditional approaches that rely heavily on manual intervention and specialised expertise are proving inadequate in meeting the evolving demands in the face of a skills crisis. Mitutoyo's SmartMeasure AL emerged from extensive customer consultations across European markets. Industry feedback consistently highlighted specific requirements: systems capable of easing labour shortages, reducing human error, providing stable measurement capabilities, supporting high-mix production environments, and enabling unattended operation during night shifts and breaks—all whilst maintaining cost-effectiveness. The industry isn't asking for much there, then…. Developing SmartMeasure AL as a standardised product, rather than a bespoke project-based solution, represents a significant strategic shift. Thapa explains this fundamental change: “Our goal with SmartMeasure AL is to develop this fully automated solution as a product, so that our customers can order it from our website, our B2B shop, or through other means. This approach enables reduced development costs, shorter delivery times, and more competitive pricing compared to traditional custom automation projects that Mitutoyo has delivered over the past three decades.” System Architecture and Core Concept SmartMeasure AL employs a three-component architecture comprising a CMM, an industrial robot system, and supporting infrastructure including racks, pallets, fixtures, sensors, and integrated software. This modular philosophy allows for flexible configuration according to specific customer requirements whilst maintaining standardisation benefits. The system's operational principle centres on a 12-part pallet rack configuration. When an operator initiates the measurement cycle, the integrated robot retrieves parts from designated positions, transports them to the CMM and returns them to the rack with a clear indication of pass/fail status. This automation eliminates the need for continuous operator supervision whilst maintaining measurement accuracy and traceability. Central to the system's intelligence is Mitutoyo's ESPRIT software platform. Unlike conventional automation systems that rely on PLCs requiring specialist expertise, ESPRIT provides an intuitive graphical user interface accessible to operators with basic technical knowledge. As Thapa emphasises: “We really focused on developing the graphical user interface, because we know operator knowledge is limited and the market has a skills deficiency.” Technical Specifications SmartMeasure AL demonstrates versatility through its compatibility with multiple Mitutoyo CMM models, including the CRYSTA-Apex S series (544, 574, 776, 7106, and 9106 configurations). The robotic component utilises FANUC CRX series of collaborative robots, available in two payload configurations: CRX-10iA/L and CRX-20iA/L with 10 and 20kg payload, respectively. This dual-option approach ensures optimal matching between robot capability and workpiece requirements. Importantly, Mitutoyo maintains openness to alternative robot manufacturers, allowing customer preference integration where requirements exist. Advanced Software Features and Capabilities The ESPRIT software platform incorporates several features designed to enhance productivity and operational efficiency. Multiple part measurement capability allows simultaneous measurement of several small components within a single 250 by 250mm pallet, particularly beneficial for manufacturers where part sizes permit batch processing. The re-measure functionality demonstrates the system's intelligence. Following overnight automated measurement cycles, operators can selectively re-measure only those parts flagged as non-conforming, eliminating unnecessary repeat measurements of acceptable components. RFID technology provides part tracking and traceability where each component's measurement history can be automatically logged and integrated with broader quality management systems to provide audit trails. Real-time connectivity capabilities facilitate integration with external systems, including ERP platforms and manufacturing execution systems. This connectivity supports Industry 4.0 initiatives and enables data-driven decision making. Closed-Loop Manufacturing Integration SmartMeasure AL's closed-loop manufacturing capability represents a significant advancement in process control. The system automatically analyses measurement data and calculates necessary tool offsets for upstream CNC machining operations. When deviations are detected, ESPRIT software automatically transmits correction values to the relevant CNC machines, enabling real-time process optimisation. This closed-loop approach reduces setup times and scrap rates through proactive process control. The automatic feedback mechanism minimises the time between problem detection and correction implementation, crucial for maintaining tight tolerances in high-volume production environments. Competitive Advantages SmartMeasure AL's primary competitive advantage lies in its product-based approach rather than project-based delivery. Customers can order complete systems through standard commercial channels, including Mitutoyo's B2B platforms, enabling predictable pricing, standardised delivery schedules, and reduced implementation complexity. Thapa notes the market reception: “The feedback has been very positive. When customers came and saw our product, they said, ‘Unattended measurement. The GUI is very simple to use, and an operator with minimum knowledge can operate this fully automated system.'” The system's compact footprint addresses space constraints, and despite incorporating a complete CMM, robot system, and part handling infrastructure, SmartMeasure AL requires minimal floor space. Cost-effectiveness extends beyond initial capital investment. The elimination of PLC programming requirements reduces implementation and maintenance costs, whilst the intuitive ESPRIT interface minimises operator training requirements. Future Development and Expansion Mitutoyo's roadmap for SmartMeasure AL encompasses expansion across the company's broader product portfolio. Future developments will extend automation capabilities to laser measuring machines, contour and roundness measuring systems, and surface texture measurement equipment, creating a comprehensive automated measurement ecosystem. Thapa confirms: “We will continue to develop this product and expand to support other products from Mitutoyo. We will continue to support our customers in the field of factory automation, help them and understand their pain points and see where Mitutoyo technology can increase productivity.” Conclusion Mitutoyo's SmartMeasure AL represents a paradigm shift in automated measurement solutions. By addressing critical industry challenges, including skilled labour shortages, quality demands, and operational efficiency requirements, the system provides a comprehensive solution. The product's success lies in its synthesis of proven measurement technologies, intelligent software platforms, and flexible automation capabilities within a standardised, cost-effective package.

How do games like Dungeons and Dragons enable us to practice a CMM-informed way of relating, participating, and communicating? ...Today, Abbie and Tom explore Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) as a powerful practice and metaphor for developing more relational, emergent, and collaborative ways of being and leading, touching on the value of experiential learning in scenarios our brains will remember as real; the need (both in game and out) to coordinate across different meanings being made in each of our own imaginations; and the opportunity to transform and be transformed by collective storytelling and world building. ...Tom Watkin is a passionate business leader and writer who bridges the imaginative world of Dungeons & Dragons with real-world leadership and teamwork development. He is the creative force behind the DnD at Work blog, where he explores how roleplaying games can be powerful tools for honing soft skills like communication, collaboration, strategic thinking, and emotional intelligence in a safe, playful environment.Beyond the blog, Tom is a business leader in the environmental sector with experience across Australia, Europe, New Zealand and Asia. How does being a food allergy mom change how you plan an event menu? This week, I'm talking with two powerhouse planners—Colleen M. Earley, CMP, HMCC and Jessica Hiemenz-Woodbury, CMP, CMM, DES—who are blending personal experience with professional expertise to reshape how we think about food at events. Both are long-time event pros. Both are moms. Both know what it's like to sit at a banquet table hoping the kitchen gets it right—because their children's safety (and their own, in Jessica's case) depends on it. Together, we talk about: • Planning with intention when food allergies are part of your family • Why checklists and contracts aren't enough • What inclusive F&B really means from both sides of the table • How planners can lead change—even when they don't control the kitchen Jessica brings her insight as a mom of two kids with multiple food allergies— dairy, eggs, sesame, pea protein, lentils, and all nuts—an event strategist, a vegan, and past PCMA New England president who's led major conferences and embraced digital innovation. Colleen shares how her daughter's nut allergy journey has inspired her legislative advocacy and shaped how she builds safer dining experiences at the events she plans for clients. Their stories are a must-hear for anyone in the hospitality and events world who wants to stop treating food as just a checkbox—and start making it a tool for belonging. Join us for a heartfelt, practical conversation that just might change how you see the next plated meal at your event. What steps have you taken to ensure your F&B is inclusive?

What are responsible ways of engaging with ambitions around change? ...Karina Solsø is a self-employed organizational psychologist, who works part-time at the Doctor of Management Programme at University of Hertfordshire, where she supervises Ph.D. students researching complexity in organizations. She also works as an external lecturer at Aalborg University supervising students doing a masters degree. Except from the work at universities, most of her clients work in senior roles in public and private sector companies in Denmark.Karina works with organizational change and leadership development, based on an approach of joint reflective inquiry into the social complexity of the situation at hand. She draws on her background as a psychologist to understand the relational situation in organizations, which she sees as key when working with change, but her work is also informed by philosophy, sociology and practice theories.Today, Abbie and Karina discuss emergent sensemaking; designing conversational arenas for exploring change; the conditions for and possibilities of upstream and downstream thinking; navigating the tensions of plurality by embracing “not knowing;” not erasing the otherness of the other; developing a practice of noticing; and creating social coherence through the responsibility of ethics....Stories Lived. If inspection is the bottleneck in your shop, you're not alone—and this episode might just be your blueprint for breaking through it. We sat down with the team behind MAESTRO, the latest release from Hexagon's Manufacturing Intelligence division, to explore how a complete reinvention of the coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is shifting quality control from a necessary evil to a productivity enabler. MAESTRO isn't just faster or sleeker—it's smarter. Built from the ground up with the realities of today's shops in mind, it tackles challenges like workforce shortages, inconsistent programming skills, and disconnected systems. With Shawn Thelen and Jörg Deller from Hexagon joining us, we get into how this all-digital, automation-ready CMM uses no-code software, digital twins, and smart integration to become a seamless part of the production process. We loved hearing how Hexagon developed five key user personas to design MAESTRO for real people—not just ideal conditions. Whether you're a seasoned metrologist or a machine operator cross-trained on quality, this system aims to make measurement intuitive, reliable, and lightning-fast. And if you're on the road to lights-out manufacturing, the implications are huge. With real-time MES integration, remote diagnostics, and even the ability to support automatic offset corrections, MAESTRO isn't just measuring—it's making decisions. For shops serious about throughput, this episode shows how smart metrology can finally keep pace with the rest of your operation. Host Desire Wandan talks with Abbie VanMeter, Executive Director of Collaborative Innovation for the Coordinated Management of Meaning Institute, and Don Waisanen, Professor at Baruch College, CUNY Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. Their conversation focuses on Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM)—a communication theory and a lived practice—which approaches human communication as how we together create meaning.  “CMM and social therapeutics have a shared understanding of human beings as builders of the social world,” says VanMeter. This conversation provides a concise and clear introduction to this important social constructionist approach to interpersonal communication, and its potential impact on our weary and wounded world stuck in age-old communication traps.
