In this episode of The Systemic Way, we are joined by Dr Mairi Evans, Systemic Therapist, Social Worker and Clinical Director in the NHS, to explore autism, neurodivergence and the stories that shape how people are understood within families, services and wider society.Drawing on her doctoral research with mothers of autistic girls, Mairi explores the “aha moments” that can emerge through the diagnostic journey, and what changes once a diagnosis is given. We discuss the history and social construction of autism, the limitations of stereotypical and gendered understandings, and the difference between observed autism and the lived experience of being autistic.Mairi introduces the idea of “Oughtism” to explore the pressures placed on autistic people and their families to behave in particular ways. Through examples from family life, she considers how dominant ideas about what families “should” look like can create additional pressures, and how systemic therapists can help families develop their own ways of being together.The conversation also explores the relationship between autism and ADHD, the limitations of linear ideas of the spectrum, the double bind created by diagnosis and service systems, and the importance of holding both neurodivergence and the wider family context in mind.Throughout, Mairi brings together social constructionism, CMM and systemic thinking with a strong focus on lived experience. She argues for a shift away from seeing neurodivergence as specialist territory and towards making neuroinclusion “everybody's business”.We also consider what this might mean for systemic family therapy, including how curiosity, neuro-informed not-knowing, hypothesising and attention to family relationships can become part of everyday practice.A conversation about diagnosis, language, family life, service design and the possibilities for a more neuroinclusive systemic practice.Dr Mairi Evans is a Systemic Therapist and Social Worker with experience of working in social care, child and adolescent mental health, adult mental health, neurodevelopmental services and senior management in the NHS.  Mairi has a professional doctorate in systemic practice, in which she focused on the diagnostic experience of autism for the mothers of autistic girls. Taking a social constructionist perspective and adopting the Co-ordinated Management of Meaning as a lens Mairi has explored the balance and relationship between co-constructed narratives (stories told) and lived experience (stories lived) for autistic people, their families and helping professionals. VOV1 - Mưa lớn những ngày qua khiến nhiều khu vực tại thành phố Huế bị ngập, một số tuyến đường, ngầm tràn bị nước bao phủ. Chính quyền các địa phương đang theo dõi sát diễn biến, cảnh báo người dân và sẵn sàng phương án di dời khi cần thiếtSáng nay (13/9), tại xã Hưng Lộc, nước lũ bắt đầu dâng từ khoảng 2 giờ sáng, gây ngập tại các thôn Hòa Vang, Hòa Mỹ, Bình An, An Nông và Thuận Hóa. Một số tuyến đường vùng thấp bị ngập khoảng 20-30cm. Hiện trên địa bàn vẫn có mưa nhưng cường độ đã giảm. Chính quyền địa phương đã cảnh báo người dân, yêu cầu không cố tình qua các khu vực nước chảy xiết để đảm bảo an toàn.Ông Đặng Văn Hòa, Chi cục trưởng Chi cục Thủy lợi và Biến đổi khí hậu, Sở Nông nghiệp và Môi trường thành phố Huế cho biết, mưa lớn xảy ra trên diện rộng, trong đó tập trung nhiều ở khu vực phía Nam thành phố. Một số tuyến đường vùng thấp tại các xã Phú Lộc, Hưng Lộc ngập từ 20-30cm. Các địa phương đã chủ động rào chắn, hạn chế người dân qua lại.“Mưa rất lớn ở các khu vực trên địa bàn toàn thành phố, đặc biệt là khu vực phía Nam. Đối với các xã Phú Lộc, Hưng Lộc, một số tuyến đường ở vùng thấp bị ngập từ 20 đến 30cm. Những điểm trũng thấp, địa phương đã tổ chức rào chắn để hạn chế người dân đi lại, tránh thiệt hại. Sáng nay, xu thế mưa giảm và dịch chuyển về phía Bắc, do đó các khu vực này nước sẽ dần rút.”Theo số liệu quan trắc, từ 3 giờ ngày 12/9 đến 3 giờ ngày 13/9, lượng mưa tại thành phố Huế phổ biến từ 100-300mm. Một số nơi có lượng mưa rất lớn như A Đớt 476mm, Nhâm 513mm và đỉnh Bạch Mã hơn 680 mm. Dự báo từ hôm nay đến sáng 14/9, thành phố Huế tiếp tục có mưa to đến rất to, lượng mưa phổ biến 100-200mm, có nơi trên 300mm; riêng khu vực Bạch Mã có nơi trên 400mm.Từ ngày 13 đến 15/9, tổng lượng mưa phổ biến 200-300mm, có nơi trên 400mm; riêng khu vực Bạch Mã có thể từ 800mm đến trên 1.000mm. Cơ quan khí tượng cảnh báo nguy cơ lũ quét, sạt lở đất và sụt lún tại khu vực miền núi, nhất là những nơi có địa hình dốc, đất đã bão hòa nước. Most event professionals can tell you exactly what will happen on stage at any given time. Yet far fewer can tell you exactly what would happen if someone collapsed in the ballroom. Stay tuned as Eric tackles emergency preparedness and security. Emergency Preparedness A 70-page emergency manual that nobody has opened in two years is documentation, not a system. Emergency preparedness starts with the people responsible for responding, not with a binder, processes, or SOPs. Everyone needs to know their role and be ready to act when an emergency happens. Know Who Does What You need to know who makes the decision, who communicates, who executes, and who takes over if someone is unavailable. If you can answer those four questions, you have a true emergency preparedness plan you can act on immediately if something happens. Medical Emergencies For a medical emergency, decide who calls the emergency services, who contacts the venue, where the AED is, who manages the surrounding attendees, who goes with the individual, and who stays on site. It's essential to discuss that before an emergency actually happens. Safety and Security You need to know who is defined as a suspicious individual, what constitutes a threat, who makes the decision, who gets called, and what happens if there is civil unrest or you need to evacuate. Your event team is not law enforcement, so you also need to establish when control transfers to venue security, police, the fire department, or other authorities. Lead by Example If something unforeseen happens, inform the people in charge, lead by example, and support your client. Everyone needs to communicate and be aligned on the action to be taken, with one person making the final decision. Planning You need a plan for hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, wildfires, and other events that could disrupt a meeting. Decide who makes the decisions, what the plan B is, what the hotel will do, what insurance is available, and what everyone involved will do. Technology and Cyber You need to know what happens if your registration disappears, the internet goes down, attendee data is compromised, your payment system stops working, the app fails, or somebody hacks the system. You also need to consider whether your meeting can continue manually if your technology fails. Business Continuity Owner-dependency problems must also be addressed. Think about what happens if you, as the business owner, are unavailable. Who has access to the bank? Who can authorize payment? Who has the passwords? Who handles communication? Who is running the company? Communication During an emergency, people become desperate for information, and if they don't have it, they create it. Define who communicates internally, who speaks with the client and attendees, who deals with the media and law enforcement, who contacts families, and who is not authorized to communicate publicly. Organizational Dependencies Ask your team to imagine what would happen if you disappeared for the next seven days. If you couldn't call, text, or email, and they couldn't ask you a single question, what would they be unable to do? Their answers will help you identify the organizational dependencies that need to be addressed. A Simple Plan For each major risk, define the trigger, who leads the response, the first three things to do, who needs to be involved, who needs to be informed, who communicates, and who takes over if the designated person is unavailable. Keep the Plan Current Your plan needs to be a living document that reflects your experience, your tests, what you are learning in the industry, and new issues that can happen. Circumstances, the environment, and people change, so you need to review the plan regularly and train your team. Test the Plan After writing a plan, you need to test it. Create a scenario, present it to your team, and watch what happens. The more realistic and unexpected the example, the better you can see who takes control and who is the right person on your team to respond. Build a Business That Can Handle Almost Anything The objective is not to have a plan for everything, but to build a business that can handle almost anything and a team that is ready to act in any situation. FAI creation is an essential element of quality control programs but can consume a significant amount of time. In this webinar, we will discuss a tool that consolidates all requirements into an accountability checklist, keeping drawing and inspection sheets in sync. Automatically capture sheet and zone and identify Bill of Materials (BOM) and specifications for a complete and accurate report. This software exports a professional ballooned print as a PDF and can output to your customized Excel spreadsheet. Most machine shop owners spend twenty years learning the lesson Stone figured out before he turned 21: get great at one thing, and say no to almost everything else. He bought his first CNC at 15 to make knife handles, started taking billable work at 19, and now runs a precision shop in North Phoenix that goes after the tight-tolerance medical work a lot of shops won't touch. This one is part of our GenCNC series, and our co-host Nush, who's part of this generation herself, jumps in with the questions the rest of us wish we'd asked at that age. We get into how he actually built it: growing on cash flow and machine loans instead of outside investors, learning to program after hours with a tool and die mentor, and figuring out how to price work when you're brand new and have no idea what the market will bear. Stay tuned for more! Events and Storytelling Mark grew up surrounded by theater, production, photography, and technology. Both his parents worked as librarians while also supporting technical theater, audiovisual production, and school events, giving him hands-on experience from an early age. Whether he was holding cameras, shooting football games, working on the yearbook, or teaching photography, he discovered early that he wanted a career built around events and storytelling. Corporate Events  Although Mark originally planned to become an actor, he quickly realized he preferred directing stories rather than performing them. After studying theater and film, he chose corporate video and corporate events because every project was different. Working across different industries, clients, and countries meant he could continue learning and solving new challenges every day. Continued Evolution When Mark and his business partner started their company, they knew they wanted work that was constantly changing rather than repeating the same production every day. Corporate events gave them exactly that. More than 30 years later, they continue evolving with new technologies, different clients, and changing industry needs. Delegating As the business grew, Mark quickly realized they could not continue doing everything themselves. Bringing in specialists for administration, bookkeeping, sales, IT, and other areas allowed them to focus on the work they enjoyed most and did best. Even today, they regularly review what should stay on their plate and what should be delegated. Learning from Mistakes If you never allow people to make mistakes, they never develop the experience needed to become experts. Mark believes people need opportunities to practice, solve problems, and occasionally fail before they can grow. If you keep control of every task yourself, your team never develops, and you remain responsible for everything. Problem Solving Risk mitigation is an important part of event production, but problems will always come up. Mark creates training exercises in which team members step outside their normal roles and handle unexpected situations. He believes personality and strong problem-solving skills are two of the most valuable qualities when hiring people. Peaks and Valleys Every business experiences peaks and valleys. Rather than waiting for business to improve, Mark believes slower periods provide the best opportunity to rethink what your company does particularly well. After COVID, Brella shifted its focus from production services to strategic event optimization, helping clients create events that are more efficient, more economical, and more engaging. Start With the Goal Before discussing venues, production, or logistics, Mark believes you first need to understand what the event is trying to achieve. Too many organizations cannot clearly explain their objectives, making it impossible to measure success. Once the goals are clear, meaningful KPIs can be developed for both the business and the audience. Measuring Outcomes  Mark believes event success should be measured by more than just attendance numbers or satisfaction surveys. Instead, you should evaluate whether people learned something valuable, made meaningful connections, improved their work, and achieved the intended business outcomes. He also tracks efficiencies, cost savings, and planning improvements throughout every project. Human Connection Content remains important, but Mark believes human connection is becoming even more valuable. Many events try to fit too much content into too little time, leaving almost no opportunity for people to talk, reflect, or build relationships. Longer breaks, less crowded agendas, and more opportunities for conversation create a more valuable event experience. AI While AI will continue improving work efficiency, Mark believes it will also increase the value of meeting people face-to-face. As technology makes it harder to know what is real, genuine human interaction becomes even more important. The time AI saves should ultimately allow people to spend more time building relationships, strengthening communities, and connecting. Most family shops don't get a clean handoff. Somebody gets sick, the calendar moves faster than the plan, and one person has to decide whether to step in or let the doors close. That's the story Christy Subia lived at Bedard Machine, and it's why I wanted her on the show. Bedard is a 95% aerospace shop in Brea, California with 23 people and 17 machines. And four years ago it was almost none of what it is now. Christy came in from outside the industry while her dad's Alzheimer's was quietly pulling him away from the business he started in 1979. Her mom was ready to shut it down. Christy decided to find out if she could run it instead. What she's done since is the part every owner should hear. She nearly doubled revenue, not by chasing new customers, but by chasing bottlenecks. She cut a 12-week office lead time down to four, moved people into the roles they were actually built for, and turned a careful guy in shipping into the shop's first full-time inspector. She says it plainly: solve one bottleneck and it just moves to the next department, so you keep chasing it. We also get into the human side, which is harder than any tolerance. Working shoulder to shoulder with her mom. Earning her place as a woman on the floor. A notice of escape three weeks into the job that grounded planes, reminding her that she loves solving problems. And the advice she'd give anyone staring down a family transition: trust your gut, stay vulnerable, and lean on the experts who want to help you. Taylor Jenkins didn't start out wanting to be a machinist. She is also co-founder of cCHANGE, an organisation that supports deep and strategic engagement with transformations to sustainability. Her research on the human and social dimensions of environmental change emphasises integrative approaches, including how beliefs, values, worldviews, and paradigms influence systems change and social change. A perfect storm is brewing across the U.S. power generation fleet. Between 600 and 700 GE 7FA gas turbines installed during the bubble of 2000–2004—plus roughly 900 7EA units worldwide—are simultaneously approaching the OEM's 144,000-hour, 5,000-start end-of-life threshold. Superalloy forgings carry multi-year lead times. Only a handful of shops worldwide can service these machines. And the data center boom is pushing utilization higher than anyone planned for. Now in her 80's, Juanita contributes to local community resilience and social healing from her family's legacy homestead in the mountains of North Carolina.  Since 1978, Mesquita da Silva has worked in Brazil and internationally in consulting, training, and coaching across human, social, environmental, educational, and organizational development, collaborating with nonprofits, universities, governments, businesses, and United Nations initiatives. He received the Honor to Merit for Relevant Work in the Service of Peace from Brazil's Chamber of Deputies and a Research Scholarship Award from the Institute for Social Innovation at Fielding Graduate University for studies on the World Café.He is a Marie Fielder Fellow and an Institute for Social Innovation Fellow at Fielding Graduate University, where he earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in Human and Organizational Systems, focusing on the World Café and cultures of peace. Where do you see communication happening?...Today, Abbie is joined by Hannah, Sine, and Jotte of TU Delf's Systemic Design Lab (D-SDL) to talk about life and design as playful experiments. They introduce the four core practices articulated by members of the D-SDL: Framing Complexity, Meaningful Formgiving, Building Relationships, and Nurturing Reflexivity; and discuss centering relationality, moving from extracting to reciprocity, and embracing "doing less" in design. ...Hannah Goss is Assistant Professor of Transition Design at the Human-Centered Design department at TU Delft's Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. Her research focuses on how designers can stage their expertise to foster societal transitions, developing tools and methods to help designers understand and navigate complex systems change. Her PhD focused specifically on using design to foster the transition of the Dutch food system towards reducing food waste. Hannah is a member of the TU Delft Systemic Design Lab and the Food and Eating Design Lab, contributes to systemic and transition design education, and is part of the production team of Contexts—The Systemic Design Journal.Dr. Sine Celik is an architect and design researcher. Currently, Sine is Assistant Professor of Network-driven Systemic Change at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft. Sine's research is situated at the intersection of systemic design, innovation research and network studies. Her work focuses on the role of social dynamics when designing for and with complex societal challenges. She earned her PhD degree from TU Delft with a thesis on the development of innovation ecosystems from a network perspective. After her PhD, she joined Aalto University Design Factory in Finland for her postdoctoral studies, where she continued exploring ecosystems and design cultures. Sine has been actively engaging with the RSD and SDA community for over a decade and was one of the organisers of RSD10 in Delft.Jotte de Koning is an assistant professor of design for sustainability at Delft University of Technology (TUD). Her expertise lies in the field of participatory design and sustainability. Her research is focused on co-creation processes between different actors in the transition process. What if your AI assistant already knew your school handbook, your church's mission statement, your newsletter archives — and you never had to explain any of it again? That's the promise of AI workspaces, and in this episode Martin and Sallie break down how to put them to work in a ministry setting. The "big four" AI platforms — Claude, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot — all offer some version of a persistent workspace where you can load documents, set instructions, and give your AI a running head start. Claude calls them Projects, Gemini calls them Gems, and Copilot offers Notebooks. Martin walks through how he uses these tools for WELSTech production, the WELS AI Task Force, the WELS strategic plan, and even Lutheran theology — and shares a memorable analogy: it's the difference between a substitute teacher and the one who built the lesson plans and knows the students. Practical use cases explored include principals loading staff handbooks and curriculum, pastors uploading text studies and constitution documents, and church council leaders organizing strategic planning materials. Sallie adds her own example using Copilot agents for data reporting with SQL — no more re-explaining context every time. The conversation wraps up with honest cautions: workspaces aren't set-it-and-forget-it, AI can still hallucinate, and human discernment remains essential. Sallie reminds listeners that a great companion document to any AI workspace you set up is the WELS AI Ethical Framework. Jay and Andrew begin with a deceptively simple question: what actually makes a company “lean”? Starting with a quote from Shigeo Shingo, they challenge the common misconception that lean is just Kanban, and explore the deeper reality that lean is less about specific tools and more about principles, tradeoffs, and context.From there, Andrew shares a deep dive into labor tracking and ERP data, uncovering how much work was happening that never made it into cost calculations, and why “door-to-door” time matters more than overly segmented tracking. Jay pushes back with the tension every shop feels: data is only valuable if it leads to action, and too much friction in systems can break team buy-in entirely.The episode then shifts into Andrew's current challenge: producing tight-tolerance parts that his team can't fully verify in-house. They take a candid look at outsourcing vs. vertical integration, the true cost of CMM capability, and the uncomfortable position of shipping parts you can't independently validate. Jay talks about why he bought a CMM earlier than expected, what he regrets, and how fast feedback loops can change everything.
