What does podcasting offer us?...Today, Abbie and Simone podcast about podcasting! Inspired by Simone's recently published book- Podcasting as a Research Method- this conversation explores both Abbie and Simone's experiences with podcasting, what they have learned along the way, and why this medium has their hearts....Simone Eringfeld is a researcher, polar guide, writer, and podcaster who prefers to maximize her time spent with penguins. She is a PhD researcher in Polar Studies at the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, where she studies Antarctica's changing soundscapes and approach listening as an embodied and epistemological practice. Her work draws on field experience in the Arctic and Antarctica, where I've contributed to expedition and science teams as a polar guide and field recordist. She is the author of Podcasting as a Research Method, a book that rethinks podcasting not just as a tool for science communication, but as a site of inquiry — where knowledge emerges through dialogue, voice, and relational engagement. Across my research, I'm particularly interested in creative methodologies, including sound-based approaches. Her background is interdisciplinary by design. I hold a Master's degree in Education from the University of Cambridge, where I produced award-winning research on the impact of COVID-19 on higher education. Before that, I completed three full-time Bachelor's degrees simultaneously (Philosophy, Literary & Cultural Studies, and International Relations).Alongside academia, she is the founder of The Smart Rebel, where I coach gifted, neurodivergent individuals and entrepreneurs to translate their intensity and complexity into meaningful, sustainable work....Stories Lived. Are we underestimating our capacity for social change?...Today, Abbie and Karen discuss quanta, entanglement, and collapsing potential as they explore mattering and social change....Karen O'Brien is a Professor of Human Geography at the University of Oslo, Norway. She is also co-founder of cCHANGE, an organisation that supports deep and strategic engagement with transformations to sustainability. Her research on the human and social dimensions of environmental change emphasises integrative approaches, including how beliefs, values, worldviews, and paradigms influence systems change and social change. She is particularly interested in the relationship between adaptation and transformations to sustainability and in exploring how quantum social science can inform how we understand, engage with, and scale transformative change. In 2021, she was co-recipient of the BBVA Foundation's Frontiers of Knowledge Award for Climate Change. Karen's recent books include You Matter More Than You Think: Quantum Social Change for a Thriving World and Climate and Society: Transforming the Future (with Robin Leichenko). She has participated in four IPCC reports and is currently co-chair of the International Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) transformative change assessment. She also writes a weekly newsletter on quantum social change....Stories Lived. Stories Told. is created, produced & hosted by Abbie VanMeter.Stories Lived. Mark discusses his background in management consulting and publishing, which ed to the creation of Convergence Mitigation Management (CMM) in 2010-2012. He explains how CMM facilitates peer-to-peer engagement between public and private sector leaders to address challenging issues, including environmental liabilities and technology innovation. This conversation ends with John introducing a topic about the transition of business value from baby boomers to the next generation.Mark then discusses the ongoing generational shift in wealth and business ownership, noting that while the impact of the "silver tsunami" hasn't fully materialized yet due to postponed retirements and COVID-era challenges, a significant transition is expected over the next decade. He highlights challenges in succession planning for family-owned businesses, where younger generations often lack interest in continuing the family business. Mark identifies an opportunity for business owners to preserve their legacy by transitioning to new owners, particularly noting that acquiring small to medium-sized businesses remains one of the best pathways into the business sector.John and Mark discuss the increased interest in buying businesses, noting that while more potential buyers exist now than in the past, many never follow through with purchases. They highlight the importance for business owners to carefully select qualified buyers who possess the necessary financial resources, management skills, and alignment with the business's values and legacy. Mark shares a specific example of a manufacturing company that successfully balanced profitability with sustainability, only to face challenges during a business transition, underscoring the complexities involved in selling a legacy business. They finish by discussing the challenges in private equity transactions, particularly the difficulty of selling businesses that have been cut to the bone. They note that while private equity focuses on EBITDA and short-term profitability, this approach can create a bubble that eventually collapses. Mark emphasizes the importance of maintaining the innovative DNA of enterprises beyond just financial metrics. A perfect storm is brewing across the U.S. power generation fleet. Between 600 and 700 GE 7FA gas turbines installed during the bubble of 2000–2004—plus roughly 900 7EA units worldwide—are simultaneously approaching the OEM's 144,000-hour, 5,000-start end-of-life threshold. Superalloy forgings carry multi-year lead times. Only a handful of shops worldwide can service these machines. And the data center boom is pushing utilization higher than anyone planned for. In this episode, we sit down with three MD&A leaders driving the company's push to become an independent alternative for 7FA and 7EA rotor life extensions: • Dave Fernandes — Gas Turbine Program Manager • Kevin Roy — Principal Engineer, Parts • Jason Wheeler — Gas Turbine Rotor Repairs General Manager We trace the story from MD&A's early-2010s strategic pivot out of steam turbines and into gas turbines under then-CEO John Vanderhoef, through the acquisition of two never-fired machines—a 7FA.03 and a 7EA—that became the foundation of the reverse engineering effort. Kevin Roy explains why zero-hour components were essential, and why CMM and blue-light scanning only get you so far: coatings, shot peening, and surface finishes demand hands-on expertise no laser can replicate. We dig into the global hunt for vendors capable of producing high-temperature alloy forgings and holding tolerances on turbine-section components—a niche capability MD&A continues to expand for supply chain redundancy. Jason Wheeler walks through the quality regime: first-article scrutiny that carries into every production batch, with inspection standards more rigorous than what these vendors typically face elsewhere. The conversation turns to MD&A's seed rotor exchange program—modeled on its successful 7FH2 generator program—designed to compress customer downtime to removal, swap, and reinstall, with returned rotors entering the refurbishment cycle for the next customer. We also unpack what Fernandes calls "the three prongs": fleet-wide timing, multi-year forging lead times, and limited shop capacity worldwide. The conclusion is uncomfortable for operators who haven't started planning—parts needed three to five years from now must enter production today. Finally, we cover the milestone currently in MD&A's St. Louis shop: the first 7FA.03 rotor purchased specifically for the seed rotor program to complete the full production cycle, with newly manufactured wheels stacking perfectly alongside original serviceable components. And we discuss the 2026 delivery of a life-extended 7FA.03 rotor to a leading U.S. power producer—a vote of confidence from a famously risk-averse industry. Whether you're a utility planner staring down rotor end-of-life on your 7FA fleet, an asset manager weighing OEM dependence against supply chain risk, or an industry watcher tracking how independents are reshaping heavy-duty gas turbine services, this episode lays out where the bottlenecks are, what's been done about them, and why the window to act is narrowing fast.

**WELSTech 776 – Wholly Unauthorized** What happens when you feed years of podcast transcripts into an AI and ask it to roast your guests? Episode 776, that's what. Martin and Sallie are joined once again by their favorite EdTech duo — Dr. Rachel Renno (Martin Luther College) and Jason Schmidt (Oshkosh ISD) — but this time, the agenda was set by Claude. Using OpenAI's Whisper to transcribe 15+ episodes of past conversations, the team fed the archive into an AI chatbot and let it build a retrospective of Jason and Rachel's greatest hits, boldest predictions, and most quotable moments. With the snark meter turned up just a little, the results did not disappoint. On the docket: the "Don't Quote Me on That" Award, the Evolution Arc (how two tech enthusiasts slowly became tech realists), a lightning round neither host was fully prepared for, and the phrase that should be cross-stitched on a pillow — courtesy of Jason Schmidt. Also in this episode: MLC and WLS graduation and assignment season is here — find out how to watch the livestreams. Picks of the week include Apple's built-in iOS Password app (and its Chrome extension), the Privacy virtual card service, Google Flow Music, and OpenAI Whisper. Community feedback covers Wisconsin Act 89 and what school communication compliance means for WELS schools — including a look at ParentSquare, Talking Points, ClassDojo, and more. A love letter to longtime listeners. A mild roast of two very good sports. And proof that the archive has been listening all along.

Born and raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, today's guest has never been afraid to bet on himself. After a few years at the University of New Hampshire, he made a life-changing move at just 20 years old—heading to Chicago to work on the legendary futures trading floor at the Chicago Board of Trade, right in the middle of one of the most intense, high-pressure environments in the country. In 2008, he pivoted and opened his first restaurant back in Wellesley. Like many business owners during the recession, he faced enormous challenges and ultimately sold the restaurant in 2010. Instead of slowing down, he pivoted again.Bobby jumped into real estate and started building an entirely new career from the ground up. Then, in 2016, he and his family relocated to Rockford to raise their young children, which opened the door to the next chapter of his story. In 2017, Bobby joined SupplyCore as their in-house real estate broker. He was in charge of all their local real estate, logistics, warehousing, and property management. **WELSTech Episode 775 — Cough Drops and Use Cases** Sallie's voice may not be at 100%, but the show must go on! In this episode of WELSTech, Martin and Sallie power through to explore one of the most practical questions in this Season of AI: what does AI actually look like in *your* ministry context? The WELS AI Task Force has been hard at work developing a set of top-10 AI use cases for three distinct ministry roles — pastoral ministry, teaching, and church/school administration. Martin and Sallie walk through highlights from each category, from sermon research and member communication to lesson planning, student feedback, and meeting transcription. Along the way, they apply the WELS AI Ethical Framework and Risk Matrix to help you think through not just *what* AI can do, but *how* to use it wisely. This is an audience participation episode — the task force wants your feedback! How is AI showing up in your ministry? Let them know. Also in this episode: - **Ministry Resource:** Two free NotebookLM cheat sheets from Ditch That Textbook — one for teachers, one for students - **Picks of the Week:** OZLO Sleepbuds (Martin) and Google Vids (Sallie) - **Community News:** WELSTech has a new home! The site has migrated to HubSpot at welstech.wels.net (now resolving to welstech.wels.org), with all 774 previous episodes along for the ride.

In this episode of WELSTech, titled "Sprinkles and Shortlinks," I join co-host Sally Draper to explore the evolving landscape of church communications. We discuss the importance of bridging printed materials with digital resources, focusing on the effective use of URL shorteners and QR codes. These tools can enhance engagement and streamline access to online content, making it easier for congregants to connect with your ministry. We also share personal anecdotes, highlighting practical applications of these technologies within church settings. Join us as we uncover tips and best practices for leveraging technology to foster communication and community in your church.
Where do you see communication happening?...Today, Abbie is joined by Hannah, Sine, and Jotte of TU Delf's Systemic Design Lab (D-SDL) to talk about life and design as playful experiments. They introduce the four core practices articulated by members of the D-SDL: Framing Complexity, Meaningful Formgiving, Building Relationships, and Nurturing Reflexivity; and discuss centering relationality, moving from extracting to reciprocity, and embracing "doing less" in design. ...Hannah Goss is Assistant Professor of Transition Design at the Human-Centered Design department at TU Delft's Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. Her research focuses on how designers can stage their expertise to foster societal transitions, developing tools and methods to help designers understand and navigate complex systems change. Her PhD focused specifically on using design to foster the transition of the Dutch food system towards reducing food waste. Hannah is a member of the TU Delft Systemic Design Lab and the Food and Eating Design Lab, contributes to systemic and transition design education, and is part of the production team of Contexts—The Systemic Design Journal.Dr. Sine Celik is an architect and design researcher. Currently, Sine is Assistant Professor of Network-driven Systemic Change at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft. Sine's research is situated at the intersection of systemic design, innovation research and network studies. Her work focuses on the role of social dynamics when designing for and with complex societal challenges. She earned her PhD degree from TU Delft with a thesis on the development of innovation ecosystems from a network perspective. After her PhD, she joined Aalto University Design Factory in Finland for her postdoctoral studies, where she continued exploring ecosystems and design cultures. Sine has been actively engaging with the RSD and SDA community for over a decade and was one of the organisers of RSD10 in Delft.Jotte de Koning is an assistant professor of design for sustainability at Delft University of Technology (TUD). Her expertise lies in the field of participatory design and sustainability. Her research is focused on co-creation processes between different actors in the transition process. What if your AI assistant already knew your school handbook, your church's mission statement, your newsletter archives — and you never had to explain any of it again? That's the promise of AI workspaces, and in this episode Martin and Sallie break down how to put them to work in a ministry setting. The "big four" AI platforms — Claude, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot — all offer some version of a persistent workspace where you can load documents, set instructions, and give your AI a running head start. Claude calls them Projects, Gemini calls them Gems, and Copilot offers Notebooks. Martin walks through how he uses these tools for WELSTech production, the WELS AI Task Force, the WELS strategic plan, and even Lutheran theology — and shares a memorable analogy: it's the difference between a substitute teacher and the one who built the lesson plans and knows the students. Practical use cases explored include principals loading staff handbooks and curriculum, pastors uploading text studies and constitution documents, and church council leaders organizing strategic planning materials. Sallie adds her own example using Copilot agents for data reporting with SQL — no more re-explaining context every time. The conversation wraps up with honest cautions: workspaces aren't set-it-and-forget-it, AI can still hallucinate, and human discernment remains essential. Sallie reminds listeners that a great companion document to any AI workspace you set up is the WELS AI Ethical Framework. Ministry Resource: The WELS AI Task Force has published an AI Ethical Framework, a Stewardship and Risk Assessment, and a Survey Summary — all available at welstech.wels.net/ai/. A feedback form is open for your input on these documents. Picks of the Week: Sallie: Epson EcoTank printer (model ET-2800) — nearly 3,000 prints on the original ink bottles, easy refills, and dramatically lower cost than cartridge printers Martin: Markdown Viewer (Chrome/Edge extension) — drag any .MD file into your browser and see it beautifully formatted, no extra software needed Community Feedback: The Center for Apologetics and Worldviews (ELS) is hosting their 8th Annual Summer Meetup on June 24–25 at Bethany Lutheran College, focused entirely on artificial intelligence and the Christian faith. Registration is free; a $10 lunch donation is suggested. Coming Up: WELSTech is moving to a new platform, and the show notes will also be available at welstech.wels.org. Stay tuned for updates! welstech@wels.net | welstech.wels.net WELSTech is the official technology podcast of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, exploring the intersection of technology and ministry since 2008.

Robotic and autonomous cleaning equipment are the top choice for future purchases among 36% of facility managers, according to the CMM 2026 In-House/Facility Management Benchmarking Survey. Artificial intelligence-powered platforms and indoor air quality devices each attract 15% interest, while antimicrobial surfaces or sprays interest 14%. However, 43% of respondents have no plans to invest in new cleaning technology due to cost concerns, with 42% seeking affordable solutions. Effectiveness is the primary factor in choosing cleaning products, prioritized by 62% of managers. Budget allocations for cleaning supplies vary, with 40% dedicating 21% to 40% of their operating budget. Common purchases include hand soap, sanitizers, and cleaners, while measurement equipment is less frequently bought. Industry publications are the main information source for 73% of respondents.Learn more on this news by visiting us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. Jay and Andrew begin with a deceptively simple question: what actually makes a company “lean”? Starting with a quote from Shigeo Shingo, they challenge the common misconception that lean is just Kanban, and explore the deeper reality that lean is less about specific tools and more about principles, tradeoffs, and context. From there, Andrew shares a deep dive into labor tracking and ERP data, uncovering how much work was happening that never made it into cost calculations, and why “door-to-door” time matters more than overly segmented tracking. Jay pushes back with the tension every shop feels: data is only valuable if it leads to action, and too much friction in systems can break team buy-in entirely. The episode then shifts into Andrew's current challenge: producing tight-tolerance parts that his team can't fully verify in-house. They take a candid look at outsourcing vs. vertical integration, the true cost of CMM capability, and the uncomfortable position of shipping parts you can't independently validate. Jay talks about why he bought a CMM earlier than expected, what he regrets, and how fast feedback loops can change everything.
Andrew shares insights with Jay from a recent lean-focused shop tour with Paul Akers. The conversation goes to the hidden dangers of batch processing vs. one-piece flow, why takt time can matter more than cycle time, how to identify and eliminate waste at the micro-task level, and why “don't solve problems until they exist” is often the best strategy They also explore practical challenges like line balancing, inspection differences (CMM vs. vision systems), and the surprising complexity of measuring quality in manufacturing. Plus, a candid discussion on whether shop tours actually scale, charging for tours vs. giving them away, and turning knowledge into a valuable product instead of a free commodity.

What is your practice of systems thinking?...Today, Abbie and Gerald explore the ongoing practice of defining and redefining systems; the relationship between boundaries and meaning-making; the impact of moral forces on naming the 'sacred' and 'profane;' the inter-relational complexity that goes beyond otherness and belonging: the twin myths of non-intervention and non-communication; the connection between reason and emotion; and the emergent nature of systems. ...Gerald Midgley is an Emeritus Professor of Systems Thinking in the Centre for Systems Studies, University of Hull, UK. He also holds visiting professorships at the University of Birmingham (UK), the Australian National University and Linnaeus University (Sweden). He has held research leadership roles in both UK academia and New Zealand government, and has undertaken a wide variety of public policy, public health, natural resource management, community development and technology foresight projects. Gerald was the 2013/14 President of the International Society for the Systems Sciences. He has written or edited almost 400 papers and 12 books, including "Systemic Intervention: Philosophy, Methodology, and Practice" (Kluwer, 2000); "Systems Thinking" (Sage, 2003); "Community Operational Research: OR and Systems Thinking for Community Development" (Kluwer, 2004); "The Handbook of Systems Thinking" (Open Science, 2023); and "Systems of Marginalization and Identity" (Routledge, 2026, in press)....Stories Lived. Andrew and Jay walk through a situation a lot of shop owners have faced: a brutally tight print that can be machined but can't be verified with confidence. At least not without the right metrology, systems, and alignment with the customer.Instead of rushing a quote or ghosting the RFQ, this is the kind of situation you have to handle like an owner. In other words, slow down, ask uncomfortable questions, protect the relationship, refuse to roll the dice on quality.Andrew and Jay dig into that and a lot more, from CMM alignment war stories to probing macros, SMED, automation vs. operator error, and why a shop full of green lights doesn't always mean things are healthy. The thread running through all of it is simple: speed, precision, and profit are decided long before the spindle starts turning.

Kap is staying away from Twitter in 2026… The Rams got a great draw with CAR next weekend, Kap thinks they have the clearest path to the SB. Is it? CMM argues the Rams didn't finish strong and Kap tells everyone he bought a sex toy at Walmart. Is momentum a thing in the NFL playoffs? Sedano makes the point that a “strong finish” doesn't necessarily mean playoff success. Can the “old man” LeBron keep up his high level play all season? Why is JJ so perplexed by the Lakers' offense?
