In this episode, Katherine Woodward Thomas shares the relationship advice she used to change her frustrating love life and attract the love of her life. She also shares her secret to clearing the blocks in your love life, plus the three questions she constantly asked herself to prepare for her future relationship. It doesn't matter if you are going through relationship problems or are stuck in the attracting-the-right-partner phase, Katherine has an answer for you.      Katherine Woodward Thomas is the New York Times Bestselling Author of Conscious Uncoupling: 5 Steps to Living Happily Even After and Calling in “The One:” 7 Weeks to Attract the Love of Your Life. In addition, she is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and teacher to thousands in her in-person and virtual learning communities. Before becoming a bestselling author, Katherine decided to evolve beyond her painful patterns in love consciously when Katherine was in her early forties. As a result, she miraculously manifested a beautiful marriage and became a mother. For many years, she and her husband were happy together. A decade later, however, they realized that they'd grown apart and, after much discussion, decided to end their marriage. Yet, they'd both been raised by parents who'd had messy, hostile breakups and knew how damaging divorce could be for kids. Katherine also knew how traumatic a bad breakup could be from the many heart-wrenching experiences she'd had in the past. This motivated her to create the Conscious Uncoupling 5-step process that would inspire the kind and conscious breakup of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin just a few years later.   Listen out for: - The story of how Katherine changed her love life. - How Katherine created conscious uncoupling.   Bonus:                                                                          - Learn to heal your heart, reclaim your power, and live happily ever after in this FREE Mindvalley masterclass with Katherine Woodward Thomas

If you were to sum up your creative career in a phrase or theme, what would it be? Has your style evolved over the years in little ways or in large shifts? If you are one of those artists that like to experiment and likes to play around and maybe feels like you are bouncing around a bit and dipping your paintbrush into many different genres of art, this is an episode for you!  I am thrilled to introduce you to my talented guest, Katherine Bourdon. Katherine describes her work as “Constantly evolving in the spirit of exploration and spontaneity.” As an artist and a musician, Katherine thinks subconsciously in terms of sound quality with each painting. The visual and auditory senses are intertwined into a single experience as she perceives the sound as color and form, and vise versa.  Join me for this conversation as Katherine opens up about how she got started as an artist, the challenges she has faced in her career, the habits that have helped her succeed, what it’s like as an artist with Synesthesia, and so much more!  All over the place If someone were to describe your artwork or your style as “All over the place.” Would you take that as a compliment or something different? How would you respond in the moment? When she heard someone describe her artwork as “All over the place,” Katherine didn’t miss a beat - was quick to explain that her biggest passion is, “Finding rhythm, pattern, and color in whatever the subject is.” Don’t be afraid to stand boldly in your vision of your artwork! It was so refreshing to hear Katherine confidently state exactly what she is trying to accomplish with her art as she invites her fellow artists to do the same. Music and visual art explored through Synesthesia  If you’ve been around the Savvy Painter community for very long, you’ve heard me mention my fascination with artists and individuals who experience Synesthesia. Katherine Bourdon was kind enough to open up about her journey as an artist who embraces Synesthesia in her artwork.  Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway (for example, hearing) leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway (such as vision). Simply put, when one sense is activated, another unrelated sense is activated at the same time. I was curious to find out about the connection between music and visual art that Katherine experiences - she says that she noticed it very early on when her mother would play music at the piano. Katherine would eventually come to describe her ability as “Hearing colors,” as she started to notice the difference between individual composers like Bach and Beethoven. What can you learn from Katherine’s journey? Make sure to check out the images of her artwork located at the end of this post! How does a society know when enough is enough and it is time to stop growing, developing, consuming? How does a society know when it has ‘arrived’ and doesn’t need to keep striving for more? How does a society know when it hasn’t yet 'arrived' and where further material growth is still, on balance, a good idea? What are the ceiling limits to look out for? Well, who better to come to my rescue on this philosophical quagmire of a question than Dr. Katherine Trebeck, co-Author of "The Economics of Arrival: Ideas for a Grown-Up Economy." In addition to being a star class writer, Katherine is Senior Strategic Advisor for the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (https://wellbeingeconomy.org/) – a global collaboration she co-founded in 2018, the same year she co-founded WEAll Scotland. Before then, she had a prodigious history with Oxfam. She is also one of those people who have given a talk for TedX and amassed over 65 000 views (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt9NKulHTDE). Impressed yet? However, as I live a very sheltered and insular life, I first came across Katherine Trebeck when I stumbled upon the Melbourne book launch of 'Economics of Arrival' (https://policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/the-economics-of-arrival) (which she co-wrote with the equally impressive Jeremy Williams (https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/jeremy-williams)) almost by accident. I was meeting up for drinks with fellow post-growth activists who talked me into coming along to the book launch. I was immediately blown away by Katherine's speech at the event and bought the book on the spot. I don't know HOW Katherine and Jeremy did it, but they achieved the almost impossible: they wrote a full-length book about economics and made it an incredibly interesting and absorbing read. I normally read ‘topical’ books only when necessary for my work, but I remember in October 2019 flipping through the pages eagerly on the tram every day on the way to the week-long Extinction Rebellion actions. The book provided a fantastic big-picture perspective on how a better world could look like. This proved to be a great motivator to begin a day's worth of protesting! Katherine's humanity, curiosity and sense for social justice shines through every page in 'Economics Of Arrival' just as it does when I spoke with her, a year and a half later on PGAP. The choice of muzak today is 'Ticonderoga' by Melbourne art-rock duo 'Privateer'. This can all be found on their branch new EP "Winter's Dream." (https://privateermusic.bandcamp.com/album/winters-dream). So sit back, enjoy the discussion and if, after the interview, you feel you still haven't arrived and are hankering for more of Katherine's great work: Dr. Katherine Trebeck's website can be found here (https://katherinetrebeck.com/). The 'Economics of Arrival’ can be bought here (https://policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/the-economics-of-arrival). Why the Future Economy has to be a Wellbeing Economy | Katherine Trebeck | TEDxMünche - this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt9NKulHTDE) has merely received 65,114 YouTube views. Make sure you're number 65, 115! Katherine is co-founder of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (https://wellbeingeconomy.org/). Anyone who loves post-growth will adore WEAll so check them out now! IF YOU LIKED THIS EPISODE OF PGAP YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: Post Growth Institute with Robert Wanalo (https://pgap.fireside.fm/pgo) - Robert is a member of WEAll (just like Katherine!) and a member of Post-Growth Institute (just like Katherine's co-author Jeremy Williams!) In the wrap-up to the interview, I made some observations on contrasting opinions to fellow author Karen Shragg (https://pgap.fireside.fm/movingupstream), who I interviewed just one episode ago. Worth checking out to draw out your own comparisons! If you are interested in a global south perspective on family planning and population sustainability, my interview with Ugandan born Florence Blondel (https://pgap.fireside.fm/smallfamilies) is probably still my favourite of all the conversations on PGAP so far. Special Guest: Dr Katherine Trebeck.

Becoming a mother was one of the most difficult transitions I’ve faced in my life. Before having kids, I was what one might call a workaholic. I avoided dealing with my emotions and feelings by keeping extremely busy, working long hours, and overcommitting socially. Sound familiar? But after having my first baby and suffering from postpartum anxiety and depression, I truly had to rethink everything while working through my depression. I started going to therapy and started to understand my thoughts and how I relate to them. Through that experience, I realized that a lot of my suffering as a new mother was coming from inside my own head. My inner mean mom was telling me I was not enough, on loop, all day long. My guest today, Katherine Wintsch, is the founder and CEO of The Mom Complex and is dedicated to making the lives of mothers easier. Today’s show is about overcoming fear on your way to chasing your dreams. We encounter moments of crossroads in life, where we are faced with decisions that determine our future. My guest had the guts to leave her chosen career behind--all to preserve her mental health. We are raising money for Mental Health America, so see the link below to donate and help us reach our goal! Katherine Knapke, RN, BSN, is the Communications and Operations Manager at the American Negotiation Institute, where she uses her experience as a psychiatric nurse trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and a mediator to address the psychological, emotional, and societal concerns that impact women in the workplace. In October, Katherine is launching the American Negotiation Institute’s newest podcast, Ask With Confidence, designed to empower women and help them gain the confidence they need when engaging in difficult conversations. How Katherine arrived at her present work Do you enjoy doing things that scare you? Katherine says she is grateful for the new things she does every day because they scare her. She makes her own schedule and works with many different people as they talk through their shared experiences. When Katherine decided to give this new field a try, she started learning applicable skills and making new connections. Even though she began as an Administrative Assistant, she moved her way up because of her work ethic and sacrifice. TWEET: Take inspiration from others, not imitation. #chasingdreams Considering mental health consequences Do you think about the mental health consequences of the choices you make? Katherine knows that many people sacrifice their mental health to stay in a job they know isn’t right for them. She did the opposite by jumping into something new and untried--all in an effort to salvage her mental health! Katherine knew that she couldn’t continue in the nursing field that was leaving her unsatisfied and unfulfilled. Even though trying something new was a big risk, Katherine knew it was a step she had to take. TWEET: What is the point of having a job and earning money if you’re too stressed about it to enjoy your life? #chasingdreams Cultivating small acts of self-care When was the last time you focused on self-care? Hopefully, it was earlier today! Most people mistakenly think that self-care has to be extreme, like that once-a-year vacation. We need to realize that small things like daily journaling and hobbies are forms of self-care. Cleaning and decluttering your environment can be self-care because you feel better, and your outlook improves. Even the simple act of showering can be a refreshing way to reset your mindset! We hear lots of stories about motherhood and parenting. But not very many about moms themselves—except for ones where they feel guilty and exhausted all the time. Journalist Katherine Goldstein wants to change that. She joins us to talk about what it’s really like to be a working mom—and how she’s challenging the world around her, not conforming to it. Katherine is a journalist whose work focuses on women, work, and parenting issues. She’s also the creator and host of a new podcast called The Double Shift—a show that explores the intricate lives of mothers who work. She joins us to share her own experience, and the amazing stories of working moms—from a 24-hour daycare provider in Las Vegas to a candidate who’s running for office with three small kids in tow. The conversation about working mothers is very dominated by mostly middle class, white collar, urban people in big cities… usually through a lens of a lot of privilege. And those concerns that are raised by that group are completely valid and need to be talked about, but those are only a very small slice of the experience. —Katherine Goldstein, journalist and host of The Double Shift We talk about: How Katherine went from print journalism to reporting via podcast, and how she developed The Double Shift Why “leaning in” doesn’t work as advertised for moms, and, well, lots of women Why men are essential in the work of protecting and supporting women and mothers Why angry moms make such great activists Links: Twitter The Double Shift podcast Elizabeth Warren’s universal child care plan, explained How Democrats Plan To Make Child Care More Affordable For Working Families Plus Sara gets showered with glitter at a Robyn show and there’s just still so much glitter everywhere Katel and Sara discuss how their friends and families are navigating child care, from the wildly varying ways it takes shape to how much it costs—and what universal child care could mean for American parents And a big fuck yeah to...poetry! How to Talk to Your Kids About Sex Without Crying

Today’s episode isn’t child friendly. Listen to it when the kids aren’t around or when you have your headphones on. I kick off this show with a story about how I tried to have a talk about sex with my daughter Remi. I thought it was going well except for the part where she was curled up on the floorboard of the car and the confusion about whether the people were naked or not. This is why I brought in my friend and nurse practitioner Katherine Diggs to talk about this important topic. You can find Katherine here: Katherine Diggs on Facebook Show Notes [00:56] The night I talked to Remi Hope about sex. All of the women in the family were decorating for a wedding reception, and I thought I would take Remi out to a nice dinner afterwards. [01:22] Remi wanted to go through the Burger King drive-thru. I began to tell Remi what a condom was and she physically curled up in the floorboard of the car. [01:33] She ordered her meal from the floorboard of the car with a colorless look of shock and fear on her face. [01:46] As we drove home, I became more bold in my approach and decided to tell her everything. [02:20] After all of this we get home and I ask her if she has any questions. Her question was does it hurt for the man. Once the confusion about about people being naked was cleared up, it was time to really talk. [03:09] Katherine Diggs is one of my best friends. She is a nurse practitioner for all things female and sexual. This is what she does for a living, and I’m super excited to have her on the show. [03:55] Katherine was a labor & delivery nurse for years. Then she went back to school and became a nurse practitioner for women's health. She screens for breast and cervical cancer. Along with STD screening. [04:40] She works at a community health clinic and takes care of high-risk ladies. [04:54] She has had a lot of opportunities to educate kids. [05:09] She talks to everyone across the board about sex, their bodies, when to be screened, and related sexual health topics. [05:26] Public health is everybody. I take care of women who don't have access to health insurance or whose circumstances have changed. I want to give these ladies good care and want them to know that they are welcome. [06:42] Katherine believes that women deserve the right to the best healthcare and the best options available to them. [07:09] Katherine was nervous to talk to the boys, but they ended up being more vulnerable than the girls were. [08:26] Katherine has a beautiful 13-year-old daughter and two 8-year-old twin girls who couldn't be more different from each other. The twins are in the same class as my son Rocco. [10:33] As moms, I'm not sure we can adequately talk to her children about this type of stuff. [11:40] The culture we live in now, cell phones, and how people have access to anything in a matter of seconds. [12:02] Kids are even becoming addicted to pornography. [12:13] How erectile dysfunction is common with men at certain ages. Now men in their twenties are having issues with erections because of the exposure to pornography. [13:23] How normal women and everyday life may not seem as sexy compared to the unrealistic images. [14:22] The importance of praying for the significant other of your babies. [14:52] Katherine works two days a week and sees about 200 people a month. About 50% of these people have something. HIV is very real. She sees a lot of syphilis. [15:52] The average age of an adolescent having sex is 17 years old. [17:38] Sex is contact with genitals, mouths, or bottoms. Kids don't think oral sex is  a big deal. [19:17] Kids can live without sex. They can wait. They can save themselves for later. [21:06] Many teenagers are becoming more experimental and adventurous. [21:24] The concept of what sex is designed to be has changed. [23:14] Sex is such a delicate topic. Parents need to be comfortable to be vulnerable and talk with their kids. [24:49] The importance of holding your kids accountable. [25:38] If you talk to your kids before they are 13 years old, you can be their biggest influence. [27:31] How Katherine received a lot of backlash talking to a group of women about HPV. [29:26] Parents need education and need to talk to their kids about sex. Knowledge is power. Give them the whys and the why nots. [31:59] Some people don't even know how to put a condom. HPV can lead to cancer and be caused by skin to skin contact. [32:43] The HPV shot is controversial, but HPV is an epidemic. The vaccine is good for 10 years. Eleven or twelve years old is the recommended age. [35:57] HPV is a skin to skin virus. It's almost an epidemic. The vaccine is expensive, but there is funding for it. [37:30] Be bold, be vulnerable,And being human. Let your kids know that sex is great when it is done as God intended. Teenagers aren't emotionally ready to have sex. [39:05] Let's raise brave strong girls and righteous men of character. [39:36] One of the best places to talk to your kids is in the car. Always keep it age-appropriate. [42:12] The lightning round. [45:01] Melissa's goal is to be open with her children.
