I'm Yovy D, a former media broadcaster who transitioned into podcasting in 2017. My podcasting journey was driven by a series of layoffs I experienced—three times in just five years. This desire to switch careers was a long-standing passion, dating back to my high school days when I was a devoted TV viewer, particularly of talk shows. During that time, I realized my true calling was in journalism, explicitly producing content. To confirm my abilities, I decided to engage with the public and put my skills to the test. Fast forward to today, and I've successfully launched my English podcast, "The Yovy D," while wholeheartedly embracing and celebrating my unique accent. Moreover, I've ventured into creating the "Chombita Chronicles" podcast. This podcast chronicles my life journey as a Latina, Black, college-educated individual exposed to unique educational and career opportunities. Raised in Virginia, Katherine Wintcsh is married to a great husband and has two children. She spent 15 years of her life in advertising. And then she realized that such agency is a young person's game. Then she started The Mom Complex through which she helps huge companies improve their products and services and sell them to moms. The switch gave her so much joy that she became her boss, got to control her schedule, and had more time for herself as well as for her family.Highlights:The Mom Complex - a company that helps high-profile brands to understand how moms use the products and the services they preferResearch factor - the research is designed in such a way that moms answer them honestly and accurately through opinion parties instead of focus groupsThe masked perfect mom - projecting oneself as a perfect know it all mom, according to her research is highly correlated with how bad they feel about themselvesDifferent by design - while men are wired with the ability to focus on one thing, women are wired with thoughts like a spiderwebApart from working with great brands, she is also helping women cope with the pressures of being a mom in a society that expects moms to know it all, to do it all, and to know best all the time. Although these could be considered compliments, she wants women to liberate themselves from this mental bondage by prioritizing self-care and by allowing themselves to be vulnerable just like everyone else. Now that she has tamed the "dragon of self-doubt", she is out to help other women do the same. In this episode, we interview our very first guest, a powerhouse woman and new author, Katherine Wintsch. She is the founder and CEO of the Mom Complex, an agency that helps companies develop better products, services, and experiences for mothers. Her book Slay Like A Mother helps you identify your dragon of self-doubt and slay it so you can conquer motherhood and all the other facets of your life.
0.00 Katherine spent 20 years of her life put together on the outside but broken on the inside as a people pleaser and overachiever who drew her self-esteem from external sources, and it nearly killed her. She finally got her act together by slaying her "dragon of self-doubt," and life on the other side is much better: she feels calm, she feels whole... and she is on a mission to help other women join her.6:06 The Mom Complex is Katherine's consulting company, which focuses on helping large brands understand moms and develop the right products for their lives. Their work is groundbreaking, and their ongoing research over the last ten years reveals that the vast majority of women struggle with self-doubt. Katherine shares their focus on uncovering the truth and cutting through the tendency of moms - and women in general - to insist that they are fine, their husbands are perfect and their lives are amazing.9:25 How getting to a breaking point drove Katherine to take herself on as a project, and the two years she spent doing deep self work to understand herself, what made her happy, what made her upset, what made her exhausted and what made her energized."Now that I know myself, I know how to make myself happy and I know how to reduce my frustrations in life."13:12 Katherine has built a life and a career around studying and supporting mothers, and the Slay Like A Mother ecosystem is full of resources - many of them free and easily accessible - to tap into the keys to the kingdom that she has discovered. Katherine shares ways for listeners to take advantage of some of their learnings, as well as where to find lists of wins and lifehacks - or "slays" as she calls them - shared by others.18:30 Discussing non-negotiables, wielding influence with integrity, finding balance and setting boundaries. Katherine says: "For me, more is a four letter word: always chasing more money, more employees, more book sales... it just puts me in a hamster wheel.""I finally found balance in my life and I'm not going to screw it up now."27:10 Identifying voice, brand and language: Slay Like A Mother has an aggressive tone and stance, and it's about slaying and killing and taking down something that is trying to kill you. I wanted it to be heroic, because this stuff is life-changing. "A brand is everything: it sets the tone for how you're going to show up in the world, and it's definitive... it has edges."32:00 Managing dual desires: how Katherine eschews the word more while maintaining ambition and growth, figures out what her "currency" is and sets achievable goals. "Make sure you're going after the more that actually fulfills you.""I want to go to a plateau, and then I want to dance on the plateau. I'm tired of climbing with the pick-axe."37:20 Being intentional and deliberate with time and friendships, and how Katherine has learned how to set boundaries for herself and give time to herself rather than giving it all away. "In the previous version of myself, I was so empty on the inside that I had to go to external sources for my self-esteem by helping friends out (...) and doing all the things. So now that I can fill my own cup and my self worth comes from the inside, I don't give away as much of my time." 40:45 What Katherine, Nate & Beth are consuming and so into right now... and the concept that ultimately sold the Slay Like A Mother book concept in to the publisher: "The struggle is real, but the suffering is optional." This week is all about overcoming competition and comparing yourself to others. In order to do that meet today
Becoming a mother was one of the most difficult transitions I’ve faced in my life. Before having kids, I was what one might call a workaholic. I avoided dealing with my emotions and feelings by keeping extremely busy, working long hours, and overcommitting socially. Sound familiar? But after having my first baby and suffering from postpartum anxiety and depression, I truly had to rethink everything while working through my depression. I started going to therapy and started to understand my thoughts and how I relate to them. Through that experience, I realized that a lot of my suffering as a new mother was coming from inside my own head. My inner mean mom was telling me I was not enough, on loop, all day long. My guest today, Katherine Wintsch, is the founder and CEO of The Mom Complex and is dedicated to making the lives of mothers easier. She recently wrote a book about that negative inner conversation that plagues mothers called, Slay Like A Mother, combining 10+ years of groundbreaking research on motherhood with her own personal journey. Utah Diaper Bank (0:00:00)You've heard of blood banks and commercial banks, but have you ever heard of diaper banks? Now, these aren't the kind of banks where you can deposit your old diapers to collect interest. Actually, these banks are doing quite a bit of good for new and growing families struggling to afford diapers, one of the biggest financial costs that new parents face. Diaper banks collect and distribute diapers to those who need them most. We wanted to learn more about how these banks are serving families so we invited Vic Velivis, executive director of Utah Diaper Bank, on the show to discuss his work and why it's so important for the community. Aging is Empowering (0:12:16)Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought “hm… this outfit really is too young for me?” or “gosh, I look a thousand years old!” I do this all the time! Our culture truly has a negative perspective on ageing, but the life expectancy has never been longer than it is now! So, because all of us are getting older, how can we learn to stop feeling like getting older is the end of the world? With us today to answer this question is Carl Honoré, a bestselling author and broadcaster, and the unintentional godfather of the Slow Movement. Questions to Heal, Laugh and Love (0:34:57)After a couple years of knowing our significant other, it can start to feel like we know every single thing about them. We know exactly what they're going to say and what stories they're going to share. But, it's important to remember that people, no matter how long we've known them, have an infinite depth, and we really don't know everything about them. So how can we dig a little deeper in our conversations to peel back a few more of their layers and keep things interesting? To help us answer that question we invited Alicia Muñoz, a couple's specialist and author of several books full of simple ideas and questions that can enliven and heal any relationship. Spam Calls (0:50:35)It seems like we are receiving more spam calls than actual calls from friends or coworkers these days. I've received calls about receiving free hotel stays, winning the lottery, and even calls where no one is on the other line! But not all calls are so innocent. Scammers have convinced people all across the country that they are in trouble with the IRS. Is there any way to stop these calls before they come through your phone? Or is this just the life we live? We've invited tech expert and former editor in chief of Techwalla Dave Johnson on the show to help us breakdown how to identify and stop receiving spam calls. The Sox Place (1:07:39)There are around 4.2 million homeless youth and young adults currently in the US. To help these kids, a father and son duo (Doyle and Jordan Robinson) started handing out socks to the homeless at the 16thStreet Mall in downtown Denver. In 2002, their acts of kindness evolved into the creation of The Sox Place, an organization that helps homeless children by providing them with food and shelter, among other services, in Denver, Colorado. Here to explain how The Sox Place is helping change lives is volunteer for The Sox Place, advocate for the homeless and cognitive behavioral therapist, Michelle Szynskie. Slay Like a Mother (1:24:02)Being a mom is no easy task. We often feel like we have to be an expert at everything we do... work, childcare, interior design, and school mentoring among many others. Some days you feel like superwoman and the next you might feel like the world is crumbling at your feet. During our worst moments, it can be easy to compare ourselves to other mothers, but it's important to kick the negativity to the curb and remember that we're doing an amazing job no matter what! Here to talk about how moms can overcome that recurring self-doubt is Katherine Wintsch. Katherine is the founder of The Mom Complex and author of the new book “Slay Like a Mother”.
Episode 58, Does any of this sound familiar? You're a people pleaser by day and an overthinker by night. The negative voice in your head is the meanest mean girl you know. You feel broken and believe you must hide that brokenness to be loved. You're tired. You are not alone. We talk with Katherine Wintsch, author of Slay Like a Mother, who dedicates her life to making the lives of mothers easier. In her role as founder and CEO of The Mom Complex, she helps the largest companies in the world such as Walmart, Johnson & Johnson and Wells Fargo better understand and support their mom customers and employees. Some of the topics we discuss in this episode: Struggle vs. Suffering. How talking about your stress can reduce it's power over you. How do we re-define the roles that we know of a mom or wife and how to get comfortable with our new role. Why our inner voice “Bitch radio” is so negative? How to slay this dragon of self doubt? Self-love (vs. seeking approval) and how we can see and appreciate our greatness. The importance of standing in your own greatness and how to stop suffering from the Imposter Syndrome? The power of meditation and how it can change your life. In today's episode I chat with Katherine Wintsch, founder & CEO of The Mom Complex, and author of Slay Like a Mother. The subtitle of the book is "How to destroy what's holding you back so you can live the life you want." It's all about slaying your inner dragons, recognizing that inner monologue that often seems like it's trying to take you down. She talks about the mask we wear when we say everything is "fine," the difference between struggling and suffering, and how to avoid unrealistic expectations. We talk about her concept of the "perfect mom paradox," the comparison game, setting boundaries and being kinder to ourselves. She has incredible insight into the mom experience, the woman experience and the human experience.

Modern motherhood & mental health expert Katherine Wintsch is founder CEO of The Mom Complex and author of SLAY LIKE A MOTHER: How to Destroy What’s Holding Your Back So You Can Live the Life You Want (paperback release March 3, 2020; Sourcebooks). In both her business and her book, Katherine’s goal is to help mothers embark on a new chapter in life as a parent – away from the self-defeating tendencies and feelings of inadequacy and toward the deeply held belief that you’ve always been more than enough as a mother and a woman. As a mom to a toddler, this book is exactly the positive mental health guidance I needed.
Do you ever wonder if it’s strategic to play small? Katherine Wintsch Founder and CEO of The Mom Complex, author of Slay Like a Mother and is a lover of happy hour. Katherine’s sought-after research and understanding of mothers has been featured by The Today Show, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Fast Company. She regularly writes about the topic for Working Mother magazine and on the Slay Like a Mother platform. “Playing small” is often seen as a dirty word in the world of entrepreneurship. So many people talk about scaling, and getting bigger and bigger. Bring on the top line revenue! Bring on more clients! “Stop playing small,” your coach or best friend may say. And to an extent, they’re right! You don’t want to let fear make you say NO to being the best in your business. But what happens when you get to the top? You’ve climbed the ladder, conquered your fears, served your clients - now what? See, every YES that you say means that you say NO to something else. For some people, that means that they say YES to that growth, but find themselves taking on less than ideal clients. Or they say NO to themselves. This week’s guest on Success Unfiltered, Katherine Wintsch, created the Mom Complex to help empower moms to have fulfilling careers. She chose to stop the company’s growth at $2 million so that they could focus on serving their ideal clients, and say YES to fulfilling, focused work. Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Katherine Wintsch. Katherine shares about the Mom Complex, and her new book, Slay Like a Mother. The book was rejected 23 times in 4 years: the NO’s were devastating! As an entrepreneur, you’re in control of who you are, who you serve, and what you do. After the 23rd NO, Katherine had to take some time to be upset and throw a “pity party” for herself. “Ultimately, we should not be pretending everything is fine: experience your setbacks; grieve the NO’s.” ~ Katherine Winstch When you say that you’re struggling, you’d be amazed how much support you get when you ask for help. If you’re looking to publish a book, getting a literary agent will help you so much: they know how to talk to publishers. Publishers don’t always want what hasn’t been done before: they want what is going to be successful! When you write a book, be prepared to spend just as much time marketing as you do with the writing. Katherine probably invested $75,000 into her book! Entrepreneurs make great authors, because they are use to creating ways to share their ideas, and they are use to doing the work. Katherine shares the most devastating NO: “I think it's saying NO to ourselves in the form of overextending ourselves, always saying yes.” Sometimes it can look like you have it all, but you’re miserable. It’s so important to know when to say NO to others, and YES to yourself! Many businesses will choose to stay small so they can have control and freedom. Once the Mom Complex hit $2 million in revenue, Katherine knew that she had hit her sweet spot. Knowing precisely who the Mom Complex had been created to serve helped guide Katherine in her NO’s! She turned away less-than-ideal clients because they didn’t align perfectly with her company, or what would bring additional stress to her team. Don’t bite off more than you can chew: desperation can force you to take clients that don’t align with your purpose. Katherine shares what she would tell her younger self. Her personal empowerment book, Slay Like a Mother, helps women destroy what’s holding them back so they can live the life they want. She regularly writes about the topic of modern motherhood for Working Mother magazine and on the Slay Like a Mother platform. Katherine's journey is one you will be able to relate to on some level, whether you're a mom or not. It’s Season Four of the Mother’s Quest Podcast! At time of recording we’re on the threshold of spring, a season of new growth and fresh opportunities. Around this time, three years ago, I was visited by two birds trapped in my house, and letting them out became a sign for me to slay my self-doubt and choose into living what I now call my E.P.I.C. life. I could never have imagined that day, that three years later, I’d be releasing my 58th podcast episode, building community with over 600 members from across the world in our Facebook group, and welcoming the fourth cohort of incredible women into my Mother’s Quest Circle experience. In this first episode of Season Four, I’m honored to host returning guest Katherine Wintsch, releasing this conversation during the week she’s launching her first book, “Slay Like a Mother: How to Destroy What’s Holding You Back So You Can Live the Life You Want.” One of my very first interviews when I launched the podcast, Katherine’s episode has become a favorite for so many mothers who resonated with her journey from self-loathing to self-love and the premise of her TEDx talk, encouraging us to take off our masks as mothers and release the myth of perfection. Katherine’s truth-telling and insightful research on modern motherhood has been featured by The Today Show, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Fast Company, and she regularly writes about the topic of modern motherhood for Working Mother magazine and now on the Slay Like a Mother platform. As CEO of the company she founded, The Mom Complex, she dedicates her life to making the lives of mothers easier, working with companies like Johnson and Johnson and Unilever to help develop better products and services for mothers. With the debut of her book, Slay Like a Mother, she’s on a mission to help mothers around the world destroy what’s holding them back, the dragon of self-doubt, so they can live the life they want. I think you’ll find a lot to light your way, as Katherine and I delve deep into how she conquered her self-doubt and practiced the dance between hard work and letting go in order to get her book published, persevering through 23 rejections in the six year process. She shares highlights of some of her favorite practices and perspective shifts from the book along all the E.P.I.C. guideposts. And then Katherine gives us an important challenge to raise our own awareness and challenge our negative thought patterns. A simple, though not easy shift, that can make a tremendous difference. For me, the idea that I would forever defeat my dragon didn’t feel likely. But, inspired by Katherine’s metaphor, and something one of my clients shared recently, I’m holding a visual picture of my dragon as a baby one, strapped into the car seat in the back of the car, far from the wheel and the ability to derail my course as I travel the road of my E.P.I.C. life this season. What picture do you want to hold of your dragon? I hope you’ll join us in the Mother’s Quest community and share your thoughts. Much appreciation, P.S. What inspired her to write it and the story behind its publishing. The Dragon of self-doubt, your worries gone wild, and how it can become a beast that eats you up if you don’t break free. The Cherokee “Two Wolves” metaphor/analogy and how you starve and weaken your Dragon through feeding yourself with self-love. How to think of a recurring negative voice as nothing but an echo and the power of speaking back to it. The perspective that development happens in spirals and not in a straight line. Katherine’s mindful bedtime routine with her children and what her son has said about her upcoming appearance on the Today Show Acknowledging structural and systemic barriers to happiness and the distinction between struggle and suffering How being overly busy is an amnesia for an empty life Putting yourself first on the calendar and how Katherine sets color-coded recurring meetings for yourself Finding the guides and the importance of asking for help. Katherine’s specific challenge for us, that I hope you’ll say yes to also, to catch ourselves in the act of speaking negatively to ourselves. Practice saying “That’s not true!” to that voice The negative voice as a shadow behind us. All it needs is our awareness to shine a light and make that shadow dissipate. Lessons Katherine and I both learned since our last conversation 2 years ago. On this episode of Mother’s Quest, I had an opportunity to talk with an amazing mother, entrepreneur, TEDx speaker, and blogger, named Katherine Wintsch about bringing authenticity into our lives as women and mothers. Katherine is a nationally recognized expert on the topic of modern motherhood. As the founder and CEO of The Mom Complex, she advises major corporations on what mothers really need in order to create better products and services that make mothers lives easier. She writes about the highs and lows of motherhood in her blog, In All Honesty. Her TEDx talk titled, Unmasking Motherhood, uses spoken word to deliver a powerful call to action to mothers, and inspired me to let down my own mask, to be vulnerable and honest, through the creation of Mother’s Quest. In our conversation, Katherine shares how she learned to let go of people-pleasing and mommy guilt, and instead got curious, learned to love herself and designed a life that fulfills her. We talk about the power of revealing the truth about motherhood and that it’s absolutely OK to not be OK and to not have all the answers. I hope her story will inspire you to let down your own mask and help you step more fully into your own authentic, E.P.I.C. life. Topics discussed in this episode: Katherine’s path of taking control of her own life and self-worth How an innocent question from her husband led Katherine on a year-long journey of curiosity and self-exploration, in order to align her inner truth with her outer pursuits The connection between living an authentic life that allows her to feel excitement about her work, and the impact it has on her children Unmasking motherhood and changing the conversation about how moms talk about their lives You can’t have it all until you define what “all” means for yourself Resources mentioned in this episode: The Mom Complex - http://momcomplex.com/ Unmasking Motherhood - Katherine's TEDx-RVA talk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGIuSNks3DA Katherine's blog: In All Honesty - http://katherinewintsch.com/ Finding Your Own North Star, by Martha Beck (exercise on life enhancing activity vs. life depleting activity) The concept of defining success in your life first, and only then can you define success in your career - Devon Green from Fogdog Coaching & Consulting - http://www.fogdogcoaching.com/
