Topics include personal growth, business, wellness, mastery, and spirituality. Greg's primary focus is advising small to medium-sized business owners on financial management, human capital development, process improvement, sales and marketing, and succession planning. His consulting group, eLuminate Consulting, Inc., has a team of six associates dedicated to fulfilling the needs of his clients. Greg has a bachelor's degree in Business Management from San Diego State University and a Master's in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica. Episode in a Tweet: What does forward look like to you? Because you're not going reverse. You've already been there. That's a rear view mirror. Instead, look through the windshield. Background: I had the pleasure of joining Greg on his podcast Inside Personal Growth. I knew he had to join Reflect Forward to share his lifelong experience of learning from failure, investing in personal development, and integrating spirituality into your life and work. During this week's episode, Greg shares how failure propelled him forward and how curiosity helped him find his purpose. Greg and I get a bit philosophical – he does have a degree in spiritual psychology, after all – and we discuss the power of finding contenement rather than constantly searching for more or consuming more "stuff." This is a deep conversation that I know you'll enjoy. Guest: Justin Skinner is a farm-raised entrepreneur, author, speaker and performance coach. He is the author of the book “Professional Failure” and the host of the Professional Failure Podcast, where he and his guests share lessons learned from past mistakes. Justin played collegiate baseball, and when Major League Baseball didn't draft him, he had to reinvent himself. Justin is passionate about sharing why failure helped him become a better person, leader and entrepreneur. Episode in a Tweet: What if we normalized failure and even learned to embrace it? Could it be possible that our failures might be the very things that connect us with others and leads us to success? Background: Through personal and professional experience, Justin has discovered that failures are good and can be used to improve your life and benefit those around you. After having success in college and university baseball, even being inducted into the Missouri Hall of Fame, Justin was fired from his job. This propelled him and his wife to start their own business and begin investing in real estate. During the interview, Justin and I talk about what it's like almost to be drafted into a professional sports career and then have the rug pulled out from under you. We share stories of how failure helped us both become more successful, and Justin shares how he stays grounded in service to others as he builds his company and brand. With over 700,000 international students in Canada, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has been struggling with what to do with them all. Many of these students are wondering if they have a future in Canada over the long term. In this episode Canadian Immigration Lawyer Will Tao joins me talk about some of the challenges students experience when studying in Canada and some essential tips to avoiding the most common pitfalls. I was super happy to have Will Tao join me again after an almost four year absence on my Podcast. The last time he joined me, he was just cutting his teeth in the world of immigration law. However, he has worked hard to establish himself as a thought leader in our industry and someone who truly practices immigration law the right way. Will Tao (pronouns: he/him) is a Canadian Immigration and Refugee Lawyer at Edelmann and Co., who lives and works on the traditional, unceded territories of the Coast Salish – sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations. Will provides legal services in all areas of Canadian immigration and refugee law with a focus on complex applications, overcoming refusals, inadmissibility matters, appeals, and judicial reviews. Will regularly appeals before the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Federal Court of Canada. His focus is on international students, families, and temporary foreign workers. Will also provides strategic advice and consultation to government, media, educational institutions, and businesses on immigration/refugee, decolonization, and race equity related issues. He is the founder and creator of Vancouver Immigration Blog, where he hopes to make immigration and refugee law more accessible to the general public. He is a second-generation Canadian, product of immigrants, and finds his personal motivation in the sacrifices of his parents and the resilience of Indigenous ancestors to this land. In this episode Will and I discussed the plight of international students in Canada and pulled back the curtain on what is really happening in the background of immigration processing. Will took some time to share his thoughts on the challenges international students face in Canada and offered a few solutions to some of the most common pitfalls. Today’s show is about overcoming fear on your way to chasing your dreams. We encounter moments of crossroads in life, where we are faced with decisions that determine our future. My guest had the guts to leave her chosen career behind--all to preserve her mental health. We are raising money for Mental Health America, so see the link below to donate and help us reach our goal! Katherine Knapke, RN, BSN, is the Communications and Operations Manager at the American Negotiation Institute, where she uses her experience as a psychiatric nurse trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and a mediator to address the psychological, emotional, and societal concerns that impact women in the workplace. In October, Katherine is launching the American Negotiation Institute’s newest podcast, Ask With Confidence, designed to empower women and help them gain the confidence they need when engaging in difficult conversations. How Katherine arrived at her present work Do you enjoy doing things that scare you? Katherine says she is grateful for the new things she does every day because they scare her. She makes her own schedule and works with many different people as they talk through their shared experiences. When Katherine decided to give this new field a try, she started learning applicable skills and making new connections. Even though she began as an Administrative Assistant, she moved her way up because of her work ethic and sacrifice. TWEET: Take inspiration from others, not imitation. #chasingdreams Considering mental health consequences Do you think about the mental health consequences of the choices you make? Katherine knows that many people sacrifice their mental health to stay in a job they know isn’t right for them. She did the opposite by jumping into something new and untried--all in an effort to salvage her mental health! Katherine knew that she couldn’t continue in the nursing field that was leaving her unsatisfied and unfulfilled. Even though trying something new was a big risk, Katherine knew it was a step she had to take. TWEET: What is the point of having a job and earning money if you’re too stressed about it to enjoy your life? #chasingdreams Cultivating small acts of self-care When was the last time you focused on self-care? Hopefully, it was earlier today! Most people mistakenly think that self-care has to be extreme, like that once-a-year vacation. We need to realize that small things like daily journaling and hobbies are forms of self-care. Cleaning and decluttering your environment can be self-care because you feel better, and your outlook improves. Even the simple act of showering can be a refreshing way to reset your mindset! Is your work your passion? Sadly, for many people, work is just something they do to earn a paycheck. Today’s show is all about how much more fulfilling your work can be when you commit to being “all in” on chasing your dreams.  Paul Ollinger is a nationally-touring stand-up comedian. After achieving success in the corporate world as one of the first 250 employees of Facebook, Paul finally decided it was time to give in to his true passion---stand-up comedy. Since leaving his job at Facebook, he made the world of stand-up comedy his full-time job and now provides his audiences with a hilarious, but honest, no-nonsense approach to everyday life. Crowds of all ages embrace Paul as a straight shooter who talks about how it is, rather than how we wish it would be. Today, Paul’s comedy career takes him to clubs and corporate events all over North America, where he has opened for top comics and been featured at major comedy clubs and festivals. Paul is also the host of Crazy Money, a podcast in which he interviews entrepreneurs, celebrities, authors, and artists with a humorous perspective on money, wealth, and careers. The show focuses on how we think about and live with money, both as a society and as individuals.  Flip-flopping along Have you ever floundered between careers? Paul flip-flopped between his corporate and comedy careers for about 15 years, simply because he was fearful to launch into comedy as a full-time endeavor. When he first joined Facebook, he left his comedy dreams behind completely, but always felt much tension and conflict in that decision. He says that his creative inner self ate away at him until he knew he had to leave Facebook and do something else. At the time, he was too scared to admit to himself that what he wanted was to focus full-time on comedy. TWEET: What would happen if I gave it my all? @paul_ollinger #chasingdreams Take a big-picture view Is your career what you should be doing? Paul loves his career in comedy today and is glad he dared to leave the corporate world behind, but he admits that some days are just a grind. He explains why it’s important to take a big-picture, high-level view of your career. Some days come when he feels like he isn’t getting the traction he needs in the comedy business, but there are other days when he knows he’s on the right track to accomplish his goals. TWEET: It’s the relationship between what you want and what you have that defines your wealth. @paul_ollinger #chasingdreams Work: much more than a paycheck Is your work just something you do to earn a paycheck? Paul says that work is about so much more than a paycheck! It’s about relationships, camaraderie, and identity. When he didn’t have work in his life, he felt lonely, depressed, and adrift. Work helps you meet new challenges, learn new things, and have a sense of belonging; Paul didn’t realize he was missing out on these things until he went through a time when work wasn’t part of his life. All of these attitudes played into the decision to start his podcast to explore how our relationship with money affects our decision-making and our overall happiness.  TWEET: If you have a Plan B, then you’ll be tempted to use it. @paul_ollinger #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Think in decades.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:22] Getting to know Paul [5:46] An interesting career that began at Facebook [9:15] Why Paul bailed on comedy completely for a while [11:55] Why Paul left Facebook [13:03] How Paul came back to comedy [14:51] Feeling compelled to do comedy [17:37] Taking a high-level view [20:22] Not keeping still [21:59] What work really is [24:55] The most surprising thing Paul has learned [28:43] One thing Paul would like to change [29:58] What’s next for Paul? Everyone dreams of taking their passion and turning it into something profitable. It’s the situation in which your “work” becomes so much more than work. Such is the story of today’s guest. Listen in to hear how she turned a childhood hobby into a serious profession. Tamara Thompson founded Serious Take Productions in 2012 and has built her creative video agency nationwide. She received her degree in filmmaking and pursued her passion for bringing stories to life in a creative, emotional, and impactful way. Tamara has won awards for her documentary films produced for large corporations such as Microsoft, Starbucks, Safeway, and Gabriel Cosmetics to working with musicians from top TV reality shows like American Idol and NBC’s The Voice. She is known for her attention to detail, her creative vision to help you pull the right story for your brand, and helping people gain the confidence to Broadcast Your Authority with video productions. Tamara enjoys cultivating relationships in the entrepreneurial space to provide meaningful introductions to influencers who are giving back. She lights up knowing each video her team has produced is meant to create a bigger impact and drive results by building rapport with an ideal clientele. Turning passion into profit What did you love doing when you were a kid? Tamara started playing around with her dad’s camcorder when she was about 7, and video has been a huge part of her life ever since. She figured out how to turn her passion into profit and found the strategies and systems she needed to put everything in place for her production company. She became a silly YouTuber in 2005 but wanted to be seen as a serious filmmaker. She went away from YouTube for a while but now helps her clients use it in “not-so-silly” ways. Film school taught Tamara how to make inspiring and emotional documentaries that focused on stories of people, along with epic brand-story trailers that share the story of her clients’ brands. TWEET: Pause your life and take some time for yourself. @seriouspro #chasingdreams Commonalities among people What does it take to find someone’s story? Most of what Tamara does involves sharing people’s stories. She believes she is gifted in knowing when someone isn’t sharing enough of the back story. Some people have gone through traumatic experiences, and these are the stories that inspire others. Most of us fear being vulnerable in sharing our past, but telling our stories leads to authenticity and helps others see your WHY. Tamara has become experienced in asking the right questions that will dig deep and reveal the hidden parts of the story. TWEET: I’ve become very purposeful in finding people who are in alignment with my mission. @seriouspro #chasingdreams Manifesting your destiny How much control do you have over your destiny? Tamara says that you have to take action by putting the vision out there in the future and create the action path to get there. Focusing on what you want to be a part of will help you set the intention. Having connections and building relationships are part of the pathway to success. She says to trust your intuition about who you need to connect and collaborate with. We all go further when we connect with others. TWEET: What is it about your story that will resonate with others? @seriouspro #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: If something gets in your way, find your way around it. How do you show up in your life? Are you living your best life every day? Today’s show is full of inspiration to help you leave the mundane behind and push yourself to never again accept mediocrity as your normal.  Scott Mulvaney channels his health-nut, adrenaline-junkie energy into everything he influences. That same energy comes through on his LIVETHEFUEL podcast, which helps fuel your health, business, and lifestyle. Scott focuses on sales and marketing growth, brand strategy, coaching, and consulting solutions to help you control how you exist online. There are very few people as passionate as Scott about living his best life every day.  Wanting something “different” Can you look back at specific circumstances in your life and see the lessons learned? For Scott, the life lessons are everywhere as he contemplates his life journey. He was raised in a farm family in NJ that relocated later to PA, where Scott’s family still lives and works in farming today. Scott, however, wanted something different. He never thought he would go to college because school was never easy or comfortable, but then he discovered vocational tech school. He interned at an electronics lab at 17 years old and then learned a tough lesson when he was let go from the lab he built so an adult could be hired to run the lab.  TWEET: Life lessons are everywhere, so don’t be afraid to look for them in your successes and failures. #chasingdreams A two-year detour Scott went on to achieve college degrees in marketing AND psychology, but then something changed. He met a girl from the west coast who aspired to be a Hotshot firefighter. He thought that sounded like an interesting challenge, and said to himself, “What if this is the next phase of my dream?” The training and the concept blew his mind, so in 2010, he went out west and proved himself for two years. Since the Hotshot “season” was only a few months of the year, he spent the other months traveling and making some crazy connections with all kinds of people. TWEET: What they taught me in school, I don’t use. #chasingdreams Why LIVETHEFUEL? If you’ve ever contemplated doing a podcast, you’ve probably toyed with what you would name your show. Scott had listened to a lot of podcasts as he was busy helping a friend grow her company, but he knew there was something more he was meant to do. For inspiration, he covered a wall with Post-It notes of every keyword that meant something to him. He took the mantra, “Live life to the fullest” and altered it to “Live the fired-up epic life”-----and the acronym FUEL was born. Now, Scott is busy writing a book, for which he plans to donate his proceeds to the families of fallen firefighters.  TWEET: What if I could write a book and NOT make money from it? #chasingdreams **For a bonus behind-the-scenes conversation with Scott, visit http://ww.aimeej21/patreon and become a Patreon Donor. Do you need more self-confidence? Does fear hold you back from chasing your dreams? If your answer is YES, then today’s show is one you cannot miss. We are discussing how to improve your self-confidence, overcome fears, and take baby steps toward true success.  Mary and Lynlee Ropp focus on building self-confidence in women and generally kicking butt in life. They are a little unconventional, mixing metaphysical spiritualism with good old-fashioned swear words. They wrote their book, Shake Your But! to help others pursue and realize their dreams. They do this through their personal development coaching business, AscendingU. They love how their stories are giving voice to other people. In their words, “It’s time to celebrate who we are, stand up and grab our dreams by the lady balls.” Helping others If you’ve fought to gain self-confidence in your life, then you become passionate about helping others achieve the same. This is true for Mary and Lynlee, who started their coaching and personal development company, AscendingU, to empower people to laugh, grow, and love. They love seeing other people achieve their goals and succeed, and they gain great satisfaction in watching that process. Self-confidence is feeling comfortable in your own skin, living for you and not someone else, and loving who you are. Having self-confidence can help anything and everything become attainable as you overcome fear to chase your dreams. TWEET: If you can think it and dream it, then you can do it. @ascendingu #chasingdreams Step by step Are you honest about how you’ve grown and changed? Mary and Lynlee are brutally honest about the personal examples of how they have grown and changed, hoping these will inspire and empower others to do the same. The techniques mentioned in their book are from concepts they have applied in their own lives. Their message is to stop making excuses and take small steps to improve your life. The first steps to take are to build self-confidence and battle against fear and imposter syndrome. TWEET: I realized I didn’t like the person who was staring back at me in the mirror. @ascendingu #chasingdreams Steps to “Shake Your But” Is your life full of “buts”? If you stop and think about it, then you will probably admit that you battle against the “buts” of limiting beliefs. The first step is to identify and acknowledge those limiting beliefs. Ask if your belief system is serving you OR constricting you. Mary and Lynlee say to reframe your thoughts, take action, push past the fear, and put your beliefs into action. Each little step will help you gain confidence. Taking just one or two steps will help you realize you CAN do it. You have to do things in the face of fear and build on each little success. TWEET: If you don’t think you can do something, then you’re not going to. @ascendingu #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser:  From Lynlee: “Get out of your comfort zone and ask for what you want. Don’t believe that you CAN’T do something. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, but just have the confidence to make changes.”  From Mary: “Buy our book! Step outside your comfort zone and your fear. That’s where the magic happens and where you start to grow. Wake up ten minutes early tomorrow and think about what you’re thankful for and think positively about yourself. You’ll be surprised how that positive mindset can change the course of your day.”   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:57] Mary and Lynlee’s occupations today [2:35] AscendingU and problem-solving [4:34] What it means to have self-confidence [11:13] Where they’ve come in the last 10 years [14:40] The struggle in creating the book [17:15] The first chapter on Limiting Beliefs [19:38] How limiting beliefs may follow you [22:04] Steps to “Shake Your But” [24:40] How fear holds us back [30:01] How the book has been received [32:09] The intent behind the practical workbook format [33:30] ONE action for a dream chaser   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: AscendingU Website  Shake Your But! by Mary and Lynlee Ropp AscendingU on Facebook  AscendingU on Instagram  AscendingU on Twitter    TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: Knowledge is worthless if you can’t apply it. @ascendingu #chasingdreams TWEET: What baby step can I take today toward my goal? @ascendingu #chasingdreams TWEET: “Everything you want is on the other side of fear.”  --Jack Canfield @ascendingu #chasingdreams

www.CanadianImmigrationPodcast.com  Although the topic of government sponsored refugees has dropped slightly off the political landscape, the notion of privately sponsored refugees is still very much a topic of interest amongst Canadians. In Season 1 Episode 29 Canadian immigration lawyer Ronalee Carey joined me to talk about her experience working with the G30+ Ottawa Constituency Group who were involved in the private sponsorship of refugees to Canada. Because of the success of that Episode, I just had to have her back to provide us with an update regarding a particular Syrian family that has now landed in Canada through the work of Ronalee and the other members of the G30+ Group. With over 15 years’ experience in the addiction field as both a counselor and pharmaceutical representative, Megan Peterson knew there could be a better way for patients to get help. She took action and started 2nd Chance Counseling Service, providing a cost effective, discreet solution for patients seeking drug and alcohol addiction therapy. As long as they are willing to put in the work, she believes patients deserve that 2nd, 3rd, 10th  . . . chance. Megan truly believes the “telemedicine” platform fits with the future of treatment and is here to stay. No matter how long it takes: Have you ever gotten burned by giving someone more chances? We probably all have, at one time or another. Megan wants to see patients put in the effort, but she’s committed to helping them, even when they don’t want to help themselves. Her passion is to help them work through the problems, and she knows that it takes hard work and honesty for success to happen. TWEET: What would be accomplished if people didn’t give up? @2ndChanceCS Take a break: Do you give yourself permission to take a break when you need it? Our bodies need a break from time to time to fight the emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion. We need to re-energize by taking a break from work, listening to our body and to those who care about us. Megan shares how she makes this work in her life. TWEET: The hardest thing to recognize is how we feel about ourselves. @2ndChanceCS Chasing her dreams: Are you afraid to “take the leap”? Megan was afraid for a long time, even after she had the idea for 2nd Chance Counseling. She knew that medical services and therapy could be delivered to those who need it, regardless of geographic location. Hear how she travels the country with her family in a 42-foot RV, giving back, and chasing her dreams. “Communication Diva” is the tongue-in-cheek, sassy title of podcaster and author (and church minister) Jenn Swanson. Jenn doesn’t actually believe anyone can be a diva of communication but does passionately insist that we could all do with a little practice! Through her podcast, public speaking, workshops, individual coaching, ministry, and recently published book, Jenn lives out her personal mission statement: to connect, encourage, and empower others and to help people “know they can.” Aimed at high school and college graduates (and with a gentle nudge toward personal awareness and growth), What They See: How to Stand Out and Shine in Your New Job takes readers beyond the interview and into the three-month probationary period of new employment.  TWEET: I didn’t want to deal with paperwork but wanted to do pastoral care with patients. @jennswanson2 Finding what calls to you: Do you follow what “calls to you”? Jenn shares how she spent 23 years in the hospital business, but then left to follow her dreams. After securing her instructor’s license, she went into teaching medical terminology and found it was something she enjoyed. “There was something about teaching that was calling me,” Jenn says. But she didn’t stop there; she went on to get her ministerial training part-time while working at the hospital—and added another profession to her repertoire. TWEET: Why should I slow down when I love what I’m doing? @jennswanson2 Don’t overload your plate! Do you feel compelled to say YES to everything that comes along? So many people “overload” their plates by never learning to say NO. Jenn says you must be ruthless about your self-care and not let yourself get overloaded. Something may sound fun, but you have to look after yourself first and foremost. Always remember that your family must be your top priority. TWEET: DONE is better than perfect. @jennswanson2 Omigosh—I have to do this! Do you regularly step “outside your comfort zone”? Jenn says that the more she taught, the more she realized that there was a great need to be able to communicate effectively. Using language properly reduces tension in relationships---and couldn’t we all stand to communicate more effectively? Jenn explains how she found podcasting, met some great people who helped her along the way, and got hooked! TWEET: Take what you love to do and turn it into a paying gig. @jennswanson2 Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Set a goal. It’s one thing to imagine a dream, but it’s another to write it down or tell someone you’re gonna do it. It adds another level of commitment. Break it down into small steps and do ONE thing today.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:15] Jenn’s eclectic background and her initial dream to pursue acting [3:14] Why Jenn didn’t go to acting school [6:25] Pursuing another dream in serving others [9:10] Balancing jobs, school, practicum training, and family [11:05] Getting ruthless with self-care [12:20] How Jenn’s kids lived out her dream of theater school [15:00] Discovering the world of podcasting [17:40] Looking back on 6 years of podcasting [19:33] Unexpected opportunities [21:14] Upcoming plans for Jenn [23:29] Doing it on your own terms [25:30] Why slow down? Today we're joined by SEO doyon, Rand Fishkin from Moz, who'll walk you step-by-step through how to create and optimise podcast show notes, blog posts and web pages so that they rank well in Google. “Unique value is something Google is really seeking out. So if you go and look at the results for the top 10 for a keyword that you really care about, and you can identify a hole, a gap, something that no-one else is filling where you can provide the value that no-one else has, that is a great opportunity to get ranking in Google.” - Rand Fishkin, Moz There's loads more tips and insights just like this that can 10X your SEO results. Hit the PLAY button above to hear the full interview. If you have any of the following questions about how to how to optimise your podcast show notes (or simply want to improve your Google rankings) you'll get the answers in this interview: How do I rank on page 1 of Google in 2017 and beyond? How do I create the ultimate show notes for a podcast? How do I get my blog post to rank well? How do I identify the best keyword to use? Do I need to keyword stuff my posts? What can I do off-page to improve my SEO? What is metadata and how critical is it to optimising my podcast show notes? Is it still possible for a small business to rank on page 1 of Google? What are the key components of SEO in 2017? BTW, Rand Fishkin (in my humble opinion) is the world's leading expert on SEO. Going by the ludicrous title, Wizard of Moz, he's the founder of the SEO software startup Moz, host of Whiteboard Friday (a must watch) and co-author of a pair of books on SEO. Here's what caught my attention from chatting with Moz's Rand Fishkin: Getting on page 1 of Google is not magic and any business can do it - As Rand says, it's an art and a science. Yes, there is some work to be done, yes it does get detailed, and yes it gets a little geeky. But why go to the trouble of creating a website full of helpful content, whether that be podcast show notes, blog posts or whatever, if you don't optimise it for Google. My advice is to understand then outsource this component. The embedded Tweet - What a great idea. You have to do this retrospectively, once the podcast show notes go live, but that's cool. Here's one I prepared earlier … go on, go ahead and Tweet it … you know you want to :) Links to external resources - When you recommend a great third party service, it builds trust in you as the place to go. Such links are not ‘doors out' of your website. Just be sure to have the links open in a new tab.   But the marketing gold doesn't stop there, you'll also: Discover how to write great mini-stories to help you sell more products Revisit a grab from a past episode in which Gelato Messina's Declan Lee (Australia's best Gelato maker) explained how he's disrupting a very old industry   Other resources mentioned: Speechpad transcription service (from USD$60 per audio hour) Trint transcription service (from USD$12 per audio hour) Yoast SEO Wordpress plugin Stories for work    Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Open Universities Australia - Check out Open Universities' online courses for business owners over at Open.edu.au. They’ve gotten positive feedback and say that true success is impacting just one person each week with their music.  TWEET: “We feel #successful if we #impact ONE person each week with our #music.” #MJxMusic Balance: The word balance sounds so easy and relaxed, doesn’t it? Balance is full of work, commitment, and choices. It’s giving 100% to work when it’s time to work, and giving 100% to music when it’s time for that. In this episode of the Canadian Immigration Podcast, I was extremely fortunate to catch up to one of the country's foremost experts on medical inadmissibility, Mario Bellissimo. Finding out that you, or a dependent family member, may be medically inadmissible to Canada can be one of the worst days of a foreign national's life. Just when the prospect of becoming a Canadian permanent resident is clearly in sight, you receive a fairness letter from IRCC that threatens to unravel everything you have worked so hard to achieve.  In this episode of the Canadian Immigration Podcast, I was extremely fortunate to catch up to one of the country's foremost experts on medical inadmissibility, Mario Bellissimo. Mario has pretty much established himself as the go to immigration lawyer for any foreign national facing the terrifying reality of an IRCC procedural fairness letter related to medical inadmissibility. If you have just received a fairness letter from IRCC, do not do anything until you have first had a chance to listen to what Mario has to say. It could just mean the difference between realizing your dream of immigrating to Canada and being forever barred from ever becoming a permanent resident. There is often a love hate relationship that exists with the various Provincial Nominee Programs across the country. The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program is no different. With limited quotas each year and significant processing delays, it makes it very difficult for immigration counsel to recommend the program for anyone that is under time constraints or other time sensitive limitations where certainty in processing is critical. In this episode, immigration lawyer Sarah Fagan shares some insight on what is going on within the OINP today and what we might be able to expect in the near future as it struggles to reinvent itself as a more attractive option for foreign nationals seeking to become permanent residents of Canada. [smart_track_player url="http://traffic.libsyn.com/canadianimmigrationpodcast/CIP_S2_E7.mp3" social="true" social_twitter="true" social_facebook="true" social_gplus="true" social_linkedin="true" ] In this episode, I had a chance to talk to Sarah about her experience immigrating to Canada as a skilled worker. Although she is now a permanent resident of Canada practicing immigration law with the law firm of Rekai LLP in Toronto, she had quite humble beginning as she carved out her own path to practicing law in Canada. Her story is fascinating and inspiring for anyone who is wondering if they have what it takes to make it as a professional in Canada. Sarah was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in the Republic of Ireland in 2009, and to the Roll of Solicitors in England and Wales in 2010. She holds a Bachelor of Civil Law (Honours) Degree from University College Dublin. Sarah was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2014. Sarah joined Rekai LLP in March 2014, having gained several years of corporate immigration law experience with the Toronto office of a prominent international law firm. She has experience assisting clients with a variety of immigration matters, including: labour market impact assessments, employer compliance reviews, work permits, study permits, visitor records, temporary resident visas, temporary resident permits, criminal rehabilitation, permanent residence and citizenship. In this episode Sarah and I discussed the following topics: what the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program is all about; the types of programs that are available; processing times and other challenges; how the new online system works and the OINPs transition to online filing; tips and strategies for avoiding the most common pitfalls; what the future holds for the OINP. Sarah also shared the following information with me after the recording of this episode that she thought everyone might find helpful: "Key points that I should have covered re Notifications of Interest – NOIs - is that individuals who are in the pool with 400 points upwards who qualify for Ontario Human Capital Priorities Stream (OHCPS) who have not received an NOI since the program re-opened on Feb 21, 2017 and want to avail of the OHCPS, should create and submit a new profile to better their chances of receiving an NOI – apparently this is due to some glitch between IRCC and the OINPs systems. It is something that they have posted a notice about in the past during the infancy stages of OHCPS on their website, but there is no notice about it at present. Also, there is no automatic notification of an NOI via email. You must check your IRCC online account regularly for same. I also should have mentioned reconsiderations [of refused applications] during our chat, which have recently moved from a paper process to an online process – unfortunately our experience with those has not been positive and once again, they are extremely slow." TWEET: Ep. 70: @DelaliDzirasa - Using his #Passion to #MakeADifference in #Technology and the #Community Small Incremental Goals Delali Dzirasa aspired to be a business owner since his days in college. How did he get from a college student to a successful entrepreneur? What carried him across the finish line? Delali says determination and drive helped him achieve his goal. He tells the story of running his first marathon with a friend from college. The one thing that kept him going mile after mile was the simple focus on small incremental goals. One mile at a time. They built on top of each other. Before he knew it, he had finished all 26 miles. Similarly, Delali says entrepreneurship is like running a marathon. You have to set small attainable goals one after another. With each goal accomplished, you accumulate success. Hear more about Delali's story on this inspiring episode of Chasing Dreams! What is STEM and why is it important? Delali Dzirasa is a successful leader in the software development field. As he his influence in the industry has grown, Delali wants to give back. One of the ways Delali and his company, Fearless Solutions accomplishes this is by resourcing STEM programs. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. STEM jobs are the jobs of the future. However, these jobs are increasingly difficult for minorities and women to obtain. If the United States is going to be competitive on the global stage, it needs to invest in resourcing and developing these job avenues. TWEET: What is #STEM and why is it #important? @DelaliDzirasa What is with the “Purple Cow?” If you go to Fearless Solutions’ website, you will notice one thing right away. A purple cow. The purple cow is not just a gimmick. Fearless Solutions’ founder and leader, Delali Dzirasa was inspired by the book “Purple Cow” by Seth Godin. He realized that in order to be noticed, you have to do something outside of the box. In a world of run-of-the-mill “Brown cow” software companies, Delali wanted Fearless to stand out. He wanted the company to be known for their values like committing to excellence, integrity, improvement, innovation, and passion in every aspect of their business. Delali discuss the purple cow and more on this episode of Chasing Dreams! Building a healthy work culture One of the most overlooked aspects of a successful business is its culture. Almost everyone has worked in a negative or unhealthy work culture. But, how do you build a healthy one? Delali Dzirasa and his team at Fearless Solutions have created an exciting and vibrant work culture. They have dedicated themselves to trust and empowerment. They don’t micromanage people, they trust men and women to get their jobs done like adults. Instead of holding everyone to arbitrary rules, they empower people to work in a way that makes them the most comfortable and productive. By letting people work outside of the box, they have found that their employees are more likely to THINK outside of the box. Today’s guest is Frank J. Sileo, PhD. He’s a NJ licensed psychologist and the Founder and Executive Director of The Center for Psychological Enhancement in Ridgewood.  In his practice, Frank works with children, adolescents, families and adults.  Since 2010, he has been consistently recognized as one of NJ’s top kids’ doctors.  He is an author of five children’s books, including “Sally Sore Loser:  A Story about Winning and Losing.” That book was a Gold Medal recipient of the prestigious Mom’s Choice Award.  His fifth children’s book,m “Don’t Put Yourself Down in Circus Town:  A Story about Self-Confidence” was just released in February of 2015.  Dr. Sileo is chasing his dreams by helping people deal with the problems life throws their way - from children to adults. You’ll hear his story on this episode of Chasing Dreams. TWEET: A successful psychologist and children’s author, on this episode of #ChasingDreams How a successful psychologist began writing children’s books. Dr. Frank Sileo liked to write when he was younger but as his career developed he lost the time and reason behind the writing. When he began working with children in his psychology practice be noticed that the power of stories and some of his therapy modalities geared around storytelling were powerful ways to help children sort out their feelings and receive help. That’s when he got the idea to write books for children that taught about important issues in their lives. His books have been well received and many children and parents have told him the great benefit they have been. You can hear how he went about being published and what he hopes his books will accomplish, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. What did it take to become a published children’s author? There are many popular answers to a question like this - dedication, hard work, talent, etc. - and none of them are any less true in Dr. Frank Sileo’s case, but he adds the quality of persistence to the mix. He was determined to get his books published because he knew the good they could do for many children, so he kept sending out manuscripts and making contact with publishers until he found one who would publish his work. If you’re a Dream Chaser who’s eager to have your own writing published, Frank’s story could give you a great shot of encouragement, so be sure to listen. TWEET: What it took to become a successful children’s author, on this episode of #ChasingDreams The serious lack of self-confidence in our culture. It’s hard to say what the source of our self-confidence crisis is, but it’s very evident that it exists. Adults, as well as children, seem plagued with a lack of confidence in their abilities. Dr. Frank Sileo deals with the confidence issues people struggle with in his psychology practice every day. He believes that with the right help everyone can overcome a low or sagging self-confidence to become a blessing to the world around them. In this episode of Chasing Dreams Dr. Sileo shares his thoughts on the difference that every person can make to their family, friends, and the world if they can find the strength to confidently be who they’ve been made to be. A recommendation for all you Dream Chasers: Journaling. One of the tools that Dr. Frank Sileo uses in his psychology practice that he believes can be of great benefit to every person is the practice of journaling. It’s an opportunity to unscramble the millions of thoughts you have everyday, getting them out on paper so you can look at them and process what they mean. Dr. Frank recommends that you do not editorialize or censor yourself when you journal, but that you just write. As a famous minister once said, “Thoughts disentangle themselves when they flow from the lips or fingertips.” Dr. Frank couldn’t agree more. What does it look like to chase your dreams? Too many people believe in an idealistic dream, one that works out step by step just as they imagine it. But seldom do dreams work out that way, and seldom to we find ourselves content to walk that path anyway. Today’s guest is a long time friend of Aimee J.’s - Anne Akhila. Anne is many things: a lawyer, dancer, and actor among them. Aimee wanted Anne to come on the show because she’s a great example of someone who his having fun while pursuing her dreams, and not listening to anyone who tells her that she can’t do it. You’ll like Anne. She’s a spot of light in the darkness. Be sure to listen to this fun chat. TWEET: From child dancer, to law student, to actress, to Hollywood, on this episode Pursuing what makes you happy changes over time… have you noticed? As you grow older the things that make you happy change. It’s probably because you’re growing up, “maturing” as they call it. Or maybe it’s because when you’re younger you have different interests, things that are appropriate to the place you’re at in life at the time. But with age come heavier burdens and issues and the ability to better understand them, and your relationship to them. Anne Akhila shares her story in this episode, a story about how she’s pursued a legal career from a desire to be an advocate for people who need one. At least for a while, she thought that’s all she could do, but in the back of her mind, some other dreams wouldn’t let go. She’s also got these dreams of being an actress and dancer - and she won’t give up on any of them. Hear Anne’s story on this episode of Chasing Dreams. TWEET: What makes you happy changes over time. Are you flexible enough to allow the changes? The power of asking “Why not?” It’s a human tendency to want to clearly label things. It helps us comprehend and manage the world we live in. But the danger comes when we try to label people. People are more complex than that. They defy labels. When Anne Akhila first started pursuing a legal career people told her that she’d have to give up her dreams of being a dancer and actor, even though she’d been dancing since the time she was very small. Something in her didn’t like the pressure. Something in her rebelled when people said to her, “You can’t pursue all of your dreams.” Anne’s response was, “Why not?” Hear how Anne describes her attitude about chasing multiple dreams and how it’s working out in real life, on this episode. Whatever it is you want to do, you’ll accomplish it with small steps. Very few people wind up being an “overnight success.” The general public may come to hear about them in a seemingly overnight fashion, but the truth is that those who are successful have been chipping away at the obstacles to their success for many, many years. Whatever your dream is, you’ve got to go after it step at a time. Each small steps takes you one step closer to its realization and develops in you another skill or piece of knowledge to make you able to handle it when it comes. In this episode Anne Akhila shares the story of how she’s continued to pursue her dreams by taking the steps available to her at the time, and how it’s led to moves, new opportunities, and intentional enrollment in classes and courses. She’s not giving up on her dreams. Listen to her story to be inspired not to give up on yours. What are your dreams, and how are you going to intentionally pursue them? Anne Akhila (the guest featured on today’s podcast) is a wonderfully happy example of what chasing your dreams can do for you. She demonstrates that chasing your dreams is not just about getting to the end result, it’s about the growth that happens in you and the skills and relationships you develop on the way to the dream. But you’ve got to be intentional if any of those beneficial things are going to become real in your life. Sitting on the couch at home won’t do it. You’ve got to go out there and get it. Click here to download this episode The public's perception of physical therapy and especially the “Value” they see in it has become a hot-button topic in the past few years. I recently joined Periscope and in my first live broadcast, I read some excerpts from a fantastic book called Marketing is Everything by Fred Joyal. I discussed value perception in our patients and prospective patients, how we can increase it, and I wanted to share what I said and expand on it a bit further in this episode. [If you're not yet on Periscope, search for it on your phone in the app store and follow me @DrJarodCarter … I'll be doing occasional live broadcasts giving cash-based business advice and answering questions.] In preparation for this episode, I began with some stream-of-consciousness style note writing and all of a sudden I had written a decent amount. So today I decided to share both a blog post and an episode. With so much going on leading up to the release of the Medicare e-book, I didn't have time to make this a perfectly written article… So make sure you also listen to the episode to fill in the gaps and learn my in-clinic value building strategies and post discharge strategies as well. Getting Patients in the Door by Tapping into what's Most Important to them Regardless of your business model you continually need to ask yourself, “Why would someone place a high enough value on my services that they would choose my practice over the competition?” (Note that when the cost of your competition is far less out-of-pocket, the perception of your service's value must be substantially higher to convert a prospective patient into a paying customer) Since I and many other cash-based practitioners tout longer one-on-one care and advanced manual therapy training, let me set the record straight: People do not inherently value your hands-on techniques or longer one-on-one time with their healthcare provider. They value the way those techniques make them feel and ESPECIALLY what limitations those techniques resolve for them. If you think that only rich people have any surplus of funds that could be spent on out-of-network healthcare expenses, go to Vegas. Do you think all those people blowing thousands of dollars in a weekend are rich? Go to a crappy bar that isn't really frequented by people with lots of money, and notice that there are still probably at least a few women with breast implants. Not trying to be crude here, just making a point. Vegas has done an incredible job of convincing the general public that what it offers will make their lives better. Beauty magazines, Hollywood, et al. have done the same when it comes to appearance and what plastic surgery can do for someone's quality of life. In my opinion, the field of Physical Therapy and other related healthcare fields have done a terrible job of this. I personally value time and experiences much more than I value things. I have a pretty crappy old car and pretty small TV, and I only go clothes shopping about once every 2 years; but I just spent 3 weeks in Italy, and last year I spent a month in Australia. So someone who wanted to target me for a product or services would be wise to tap into the idea that the product or services would allow me to be in a position to travel more and have more of the experiences that really get me excited (like surfing). Your market for a cash-based practice is NOT everyone who has pain or everyone who could benefit from your services. It is NOT everyone who has a large financial surplus. You need to get the attention of those who place a higher than average value on the results you specialize in providing to your clients. Click to Tweet What you say online, on the phone, in person, and to those who may be speaking to your prospective patients (i.e. your referral sources) should be skillfully crafted to convert that attention into interest and that interest into the decision to choose your practice over others. This doesn't mean giving anyone a hard sell. It means getting them to focus on what their pain or other subjective findings are keeping them from doing what they feel is important in their life. Paul Gough mentioned in the episode 36 that the biggest fear/concern for prospective patients is not their pain or that they'll always have pain, it's the fear that they will lose their mobility and independence (he was speaking a little more directly about those with back pain). So if you have or would like to develop a niche market, you need to identify the primary fear of someone in that market. Maybe you're in women's health … perhaps your patients most fear that they'll always have an aversion to sex and it will negatively affect their partnership/marriage (yes, the aversion comes from having pain during sex, but your focus is on the resultant fear that the pain creates in their mind). Or perhaps they fear that they'll never be able to confidently go out with friends without pads or diapers due to the possibility of incontinence. That fear has nothing to do with pain, but it's a fear that could compel them to pay cash for PT if you convince them you're practice has the best answer to their problem. Runners run through pain all the time. It's when that pain becomes enough that they can't run as much as they want to, that sparks the fear trigger in their mind. What you say in your marketing needs to: 1)   Stoke that fear a little bit by directing their attention to what may happen if they don't do anything about the problem, 2)   Then provide hope by letting them know their problem is treatable and that many others with the same limitations have found a solution to their problem. 3)   Explain why your solution is different and better than what they will get if they choose to visit your competition. If you do the above correctly, your prospective patient will place a high enough VALUE on your services to book an appointment. Even though it will cost more to see you than your in-network competition down the road. But building the perception of your services as being highly valuable has only begun at this point!! Click the Play Button above and listen to the podcast episode to hear the tactics I use in the clinic (and after discharge) to get my patients to place a huge value on what they receive at my clinic. Resources Mentioned in this Episode Today's question from Kyle Nelson at Cornerstone Coaching Academy Ejunkie Clickbank Let's dive into this week's question JOCELYN: Hey ya'll, you're listening to Q&A with S&J. SHANE: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast where life always comes before work. We are your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. Join us each week as we teach you how to flip your lifestyle upside-down by selling stuff online. Are you ready for something different? All right, let's get started. SHANE: What's going on ya'll? Welcome back to Q&A with S&J, good to be with you to answer your questions about online business today. Our question today comes from Kyle Nelson at Cornerstonecoachingacademy.com. Kyle writes, "I run a membership site for baseball coaches. My members love my content and the feedback I get from them is outstanding. I am struggling with getting my membership in front of enough people to make more money. I'm not in a position to run paid advertising and I'm relatively new in a competitive area. So I don't get much traffic from Google searches yet. Have you guys ever used an affiliate sales site like ClickBank or have you used any affiliate plug-ins for WordPress to find your own affiliates? Thanks, keep up the great work." JOCELYN: Hey Kyle, thanks for your question. Let's talk first of all about what affiliate programs are. There might be some people out there who don't really understand the question. What Kyle is asking is if he could possibly get his product in the hands of other people who do similar things or similar coaching sites and have them sell his product for a commission. A lot of people do this and make a lot of money doing it. It's not something that I have a ton of experience with personally but Shane has used it several times. He has a list of products on ClickBank. ClickBank is just a site that has numerous products on it that you can sell for an affiliate commission. You don't necessarily have to know the person that you are trying to sell the product and that's certainly a viable option. It would not hurt anything for you to put your product on ClickBank but we're not really sure that that is the best option for you at this point. SHANE: What you really want to do with an affiliate program is you want to build relationships with people who are in your space. So, you need to find affiliates. You can throw things up randomly on ClickBank but it's going to take people randomly looking for certain products in your area, randomly finding you, randomly liking that product and randomly selling it. While that's good, you can put things out there and you could even manage your affiliate program through that but you want to go out and find affiliates. You want to go build relationships with people and maybe you can have them go through ClickBank to be able to pay their commissions and things like that but you're going to have a lot more success with affiliate marketing if you actually know the people. I know people in the football space that I sell affiliate products for; there's a youth football coach named Dave Cisar and I actually sell his youth products on my CoachXO site because I'm not a youth football coach. I don't want to take the time to go out and create youth football products but I have a lot of youth coaches that use Coachxo.com to talk about football. So I want to be able to provide them a product so I have approached Coach Cisar and he made something for me and I gave it to my audience for them to buy. I get 75 bucks off the commission; it's like a $200 product.

Today on Digital Marketing Radio we discuss how to use Twitter for marketing, with topics including: How has Twitter marketing changed over the past few years? Should Twitter be an important part of the social media marketing mix for all businesses? And what other social networks are on the rise in 2015? Are there any types of businesses that shouldn't be using Twitter? Does Twitter work for local businesses? What doesn't work on Twitter? What is spamming on Twitter? What is the most effective day of the week to Tweet? What format of tweets work best? What is the most important part of Twitter in recent times? Why including images in Tweets can help you to stand out from the crowd How SoundCloud can help you with your Twitter marketing How might Twitter change in the future? Software I couldn't live without What software do you currently use in your business that if someone took away from you, it would significantly impact your marketing success? BufferApp [Social media scheduling software] What software don't you use, but you've heard good things about, and you've intended to try at some point in the near future? Snip.ly [Link shortening and content sharing service] My number 1 takeaway What's the single most important step from our discussion that our listeners need to take away and implement in their businesses? Twitter is awesome, and I'll stand by that. But it's part of the social six. And it's part of an evolving and ever-changing social media space. You've got to take them somewhere. Twitter is only relevant if it's going somewhere. I would suggest - either work diligently on an email marketing list or make sure that you've got a lovely blog or website that's yours your domain, what I call your home base. Twitter and Pinterest and Instagram are wonderful - but you've got to take them somewhere. So my number one takeaway is don't rely on social media. Only use it as a traffic generator to bring them back home.
