That is why telling yourself to just get over it has never, ever worked. Get ready to level up your communication skills and master the art of negotiation with Kwame Christian, a leading negotiation expert, two-time best-selling author, keynote speaker, business lawyer and CEO of The American Negotiation Institute and host of the top-rated "Negotiate Anything" podcast. In this episode of the Connected Leadership podcast, Andy Lopata has a captivating conversation with Kwame, exploring how negotiation isn't just a transactional process, but a fundamental skill for everyday conversations, particularly in building strong professional relationships. Kwame urges us to reframe our understanding of negotiation, moving away from the "win or lose" mindset and embracing a more strategic approach that focuses on advancing our position. He outlines a powerful three-pronged approach to negotiation, encompassing offensive, defensive, and relational strategies. One key takeaway from the conversation is the importance of strategic vulnerability. Kwame emphasises that sharing information thoughtfully, without compromising your position, is essential for building trust and facilitating productive conversations. He offers practical advice on what to disclose and what to hold back, using a salary negotiation as an illustrative example. Another powerful concept highlighted is compassionate curiosity, a three-step framework for navigating difficult conversations. This framework begins with acknowledging and validating emotions, followed by getting curious with compassion through open-ended questions, and culminating in a collaborative problem-solving approach. This shift from "you versus me" to "you and me versus the problem" fosters a spirit of collaboration and trust. Kwame also tackles the common fear of offending the other party in a negotiation. He emphasises that you are only responsible for your own actions and emotions, not those of the other person. By approaching conversations with the right attitude and skills, you can protect your relationships while advocating for your needs. The episode also underscores the importance of setting a walk-away price. Request A Customized Workshop For Your Company: https://www.americannegotiationinstitute.com/services/workshops/ Join me for an insightful LinkedIn Live session where we delve into the art of negotiating with kids and teens. Ever wondered how negotiation principles apply to children? Is it even feasible to negotiate with a teenager? We'll be addressing all these questions and more. Next week, we're also celebrating a significant milestone - Kai's eighth birthday! And what better way to mark this occasion than by supporting his most thrilling project yet: his debut book, “The Mysterious Map: Kai and Beary's Exciting Journey.” The Inspiration Behind the Book: One morning, Kai woke up in tears. When asked about it, he recounted a vivid dream about a magical bear named Beary, his dreamland best friend. The sorrow of waking up and realizing he might never see Beary again was overwhelming. This touching moment became the catalyst for our book. To ensure Beary's story lived on, Kai and I embarked on this writing journey together. Our aspiration is not just to tell a captivating story but to evolve this into a series that imparts essential life skills to children - critical thinking, emotion management, and conflict resolution. Live Q&A Session: The event will also feature a live Q&A segment, offering you a platform to ask your most pressing questions about employing negotiation and conflict resolution techniques in parenting. At the American Negotiation Institute, we firmly believe that the best things in life lie on the other side of difficult conversations. Often, the most challenging discussions are with our loved ones, especially our children. However, it's crucial to view these conversations as opportunities - opportunities to learn, grow, connect, and most importantly, to demonstrate our love and respect for our kids. Join us as we explore these themes and celebrate Kai's achievements. I'm your host, Kwame Christian, Esq., M.A., and we have a thought-provoking conversation lined up for you today. In this episode, we are joined by the incredible Beth Fisher-Yoshida. Beth shares her insights on creating space for dialogue, understanding others, and rewriting the narratives that shape our lives. We also dive into practical strategies for navigating difficult conversations and compromising situations. But before we jump into the interview, I'd like to remind you about the free coaching sessions Beth is offering to those who write a review of her book on Amazon. So grab your notebook and get ready to develop your negotiation skills and build stronger relationships as we explore the power of understanding in today's episode of Negotiate Anything. Let's dive in! Beth Fisher-Yoshida is the author of the book "New Story, New Power: A Woman's Guide to Negotiation," which was released in January. She offers free coaching sessions to those who write a review of her book on Amazon. Beth became interested in the topic of negotiation after noticing patterns in relationships and communication among the women she worked with in classes, workshops, and coaching sessions. She found that many women were holding themselves back from being effective negotiators and wanted to understand why. After researching existing literature on gender and negotiations, Beth realized that the information was contradictory and not helpful in practical terms. To bridge this gap, she conducted hundreds of interviews with women, categorizing them based on their career stage and profession. Key Topics - Importance of genuinely listening and responding with curiosity - Confrontation and rejection without listening can lead to escalation - Genuine curiosity can change the flow of the conversation - Manipulating the pace of the conversation in negotiations - Slowing down the conversation by asking questions - Giving oneself time to think and stay on course Connect With Beth Fisher-Yoshida https://bethfisheryoshida.com/ Buy Now Beth's book: New Story, New Power: A Woman's Guide to Negotiation https://www.amazon.com/New-Story-Power-Womans-Negotiation/dp/1954805349/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 Follow Beth on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bethfisheryoshida/overlay/contact-info/ Contact ANI Request A Customized Workshop For Your Company: https://www.americannegotiationinstitute.com/services/workshops/ Follow Kwame Christian on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kwamechristian/ The Ultimate Negotiation Guide: https://www.americannegotiationinstitute.com/guides/ultimate-negotiation-guide/ Click here to buy your copy of How To Have Difficult Conversations About Race!: https://www.amazon.com/Have-Difficult-Conversations-About-Race/dp/1637741308/ref=pd_%5B%E2%80%A6%5Df0bc9774-7975-448b-bde1-094cab455adb&pd_rd_i=1637741308&psc=1 Click here to buy your copy of Finding Confidence in Conflict: How to Negotiate Anything and Live Your Best Life!: https://www.amazon.com/Finding-Confidence-Conflict-Negotiate-Anything/dp/0578413736/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2PSW69L6ABTK&keywords=finding+confidence+in+conflict&qid=1667317257&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIwLjQyIiwicXNhIjoiMC4xNCIsInFzcCI6IjAuMjMifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=finding+confidence+in+conflic%2Caps%2C69&sr=8-1

It is about engaging rather than insisting; it is about developing empathy and communicating your values. Based on his experience in and out of the boardroom, and drawing on the latest in-depth research on trust, influence, and habit formation, Harris shows that being persuasive in a culture plagued by deception means rejecting the ethos of the quick and embracing the commitment of putting your truest self forward and playing the long game. However, today, I'm donning a slightly different hat to delve into the fascinating realm of artificial intelligence (AI) and its profound implications on our communication. As we find ourselves in an age of rapid AI advancement, it's imperative to understand how this technology is reshaping our world and ways of interaction. In this session, we'll uncover the unseen facets of our relationship with AI, especially when it comes to anthropocentric bias, the concept suggesting that we may have an inherent preference for human-to-human interaction over human-to-AI communication. In the whirlwind of AI progression, our human-centric abilities like empathy, negotiation, and communication remain not just relevant, but essential. Picture what I call “Centaur Communication” - the harmonious blend of human expertise and AI power that could transform our future. He's also the author of the book How to Have Difficult Conversations About Race and the creator of Negotiable, an Online Community to Learn to Negotiate Anything. We often think about questions as a way to discover more — but have you also considered how your questions might influence? Kwame Christian and I discuss three key steps in order to persuade better through your intentional questions. Key Points Rapport questions help you make a connection with the other party and establish a baseline for how they communicate. A helpful place to begin on rapport is noticing something that you genuinely admire or are curious about in the other party. When gaining information, start broadly and then pull the thread when the other party leads you down a path. Beware that your role/positions can cause people to say more than they otherwise might. “What would it take?” is often a helpful way to illuminate a path forward. Even if you ultimately are more directive, laying the foundation through questions allows the other party to be heard and understand. He is the author of How to Have Difficult Conversations About Race: Practical Tools for Necessary Change in the Workplace and Beyond*. In this conversation, Kwame and I discuss how to begin a difficult conversation about race. We explore the key questions that each of us should ask ourselves so that we can determine in advance what we want to gain from a tough conversation. Finally, we look at the three critical things to say in the first 30 seconds that will help you start an important conversation that helps everybody move forward. Key Points It's hard for someone else to appreciate how much of a person's identity affects every other area of their lives until you've lived it. People explain away racism because they don't like it and don't want it to be true. Whether you think a conversation is about race or not, if it's about race for the other person then you're having a conversation about race. There questions to ask yourself before a conversation: What do I hope to accomplish in this conversation? Given what I know about them and the situation, what is likely to be their goal? What are three questions I can ask them that will help me to understand their position? Use situation, impact, and invitation as the starting point for a difficult conversation. Usually this is less than 30 seconds. “Naked facts” reduce the likelihood that someone will dispute the premise of what you are addressing.
