In this episode, I tackle one of the most persistent myths inside BigLaw: that partnership guarantees freedom. After years of billing, grinding through deal cycles, and fighting for promotion, most lawyers expect partnership to mean finally having more control over clients, staffing, and schedules. But as I explain, the modern BigLaw firm operates much more like a global corporation than the old-school partnership many lawyers imagined as they were working their way towards becoming a partner in their firm. Centralized management, committees, client teams, centralized staffing, and internal politics shape a partner's actual authority far more than most attorneys realize. I walk through how partners can actually feel a loss of autonomy in areas they assumed they would gain more control over, why this happens, and, most importantly, the steps smart partners take to regain meaningful agency inside a the structure of their firms. In today's Cloud Wars Minute, I explore how tech rivals are becoming collaborators to better serve customer innovation.Highlights00:43 — I call SAP and Snowflake's recent announcement a promiscuous partnership that's powerful and promising. I'll try not to trip over too many more P's here, but I think the point of this is we're seeing the promiscuous side: big tech companies that, you know, were very selective about how they worked with each other in the past.01:04 — I think now we're seeing that there are great advantages toward them aligning in ways — working together to do things for customers that neither could do individually. I think the ultimate example of this is the Oracle multicloud deals with Microsoft, Google Cloud, and AWS. So, in this case here, now we see both SAP and Snowflake are in the data cloud space.02:04 — This could have been a situation where SAP and Snowflake might have said: "I have a Data Cloud. You have one. We're going to compete" — but the result would be — “We're going to make customers' lives more miserable, because to work with both the SAP Data Cloud and the Snowflake Data Cloud, those customers are going to have to find workarounds and ways to integrate and all that.” Instead, they said, “Let's try to do this together.”03:00 — Some highlights: it accelerates customer innovation because they can spend more time focusing on business innovation, growth, and new business models, rather than a lot of expense on integration. The two companies, Snowflake and SAP, have intertwined their brands, which I think reveals to customers a very powerful commitment. This solution is called SAP Snowflake.03:55 — The AI revolution has put all sorts of new and interesting, challenging stresses on customers, right? And on the Cloud Wars Top 10 vendors: it can't just be business as usual for customers. The tech vendors have to operate differently — not just in the products they create but in the alliances they strike.04:46 — I tip my hat to Snowflake and SAP, and I think we're going to be seeing lots more of these promiscuous partnerships break out as the needs of the AI Revolution require customers to do things differently — which, in turn, compels the Cloud Wars Top 10 companies to behave in different ways. When Ron Blue joins us, it's always a masterclass in biblical wisdom. He's co-founder of Kingdom Advisors, a best-selling author, and a trusted mentor to many. Ron has spent decades helping believers apply God's principles to every area of life and business.Today, Ron unpacks what Scripture teaches about partnerships and how faith should shape the way we enter, manage, and exit them.The Broader Meaning of “Partnership”When the Apostle Paul warned believers about being “unequally yoked,” he wasn't speaking only about marriage. As Ron explains, “Paul was talking about partnerships—and there are so many kinds.”From professional firms and small businesses to investment ventures and partnerships, they can take many forms. And while they can be incredibly fruitful, they also carry spiritual and relational risks.Ron pointed out that partnerships often last a long time—sometimes decades. “The CPA firm I founded has been operating as a partnership for 50 years,” he said. “But not all partnerships endure well. Like marriage, many end in conflict.”Principle #1: Protect Your TestimonyRon's first principle is about spiritual integrity. “You have to ask what the partnership will do to your testimony,” he said. “If you're unequally yoked with someone whose values fundamentally differ from yours, you could lose your witness in the process.”He recalled being asked whether a Christian OB-GYN should enter a business partnership with a doctor who supports abortion. “Only you and God can answer that,” he said, “but it's a big question. Your witness is always at stake.”Principle #2: Plan Your Exit Before You Begin“Have your exit strategy in place before you form the partnership,” Ron advises.Just as couples prepare for challenges in marriage, business partners should anticipate potential separation. A clear exit plan protects both parties, ensures fairness, and helps maintain peace when the time comes to move on.“When you have that in place,” Ron said, “you avoid a lot of conflict and preserve your testimony if you're the believer who's leaving.”Principle #3: Preserve the Mission Beyond the RelationshipPerhaps the most powerful insight Ron shared was this: the mission must outlive the partnership.Ron recalled his own experience leading a financial planning firm. “After 23 years, I left—but no one left with me,” he said. “They were committed to the mission. That's what you want to see happen.”A strong exit strategy and shared vision help ensure that the work—and the witness—continue long after any individual departs.The Bottom LineShared faith isn't just good for business—it's essential for a lasting witness. Partnerships grounded in biblical principles reflect God's wisdom and preserve peace amid challenges.As Ron put it, “The most critical thing you want to preserve is your testimony. Some partnerships in financial services begin with a handshake and end with a contract dispute. Others start with a Sunday morning LinkedIn message and evolve into something that transcends the typical vendor-client relationship. The collaboration between Cross River Bank and Best Egg falls firmly into the latter category. "When we first got into the business, we met several new companies, and some of them were like three guys in a garage," recalls Adam Goller, EVP and Head of Fintech Banking at Cross River. An impromptu conversation in 2013 between Best Egg's founder and Cross River's CEO would eventually grow into a partnership that has facilitated nearly $35 billion in loans and 2.5 million customers – reshaping the lives of people and communities who were previously underserved by traditional FIS and had limited access to credit. What began as basic loan origination has evolved into sophisticated closed-loop capital market solutions, including the development of Best Egg's "BEAST" securitization platform, which uses Cross River's CRB Securities to package assets for sale to institutional investors. The progression reflects Cross River's willingness and ability to help fintechs climb the rungs of product expansion as they grow: "We have so many use cases where a partner came to us for lending, and that ultimately expanded to a deposit product, a payment service, and a card product," Goller notes. Although partners that offer point solutions can help fintechs get started, they don't set them up for the future.
