This is Play That Rock n' Roll's full round-up of our activities at ROCKNPOD 2023 in Nashville, TN! We open the show with a recap of our weekend, and then we get into our special guest interviews! First is an interview with Jeanne Basone aka HOLLYWOOD from GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling). In this conversation, Hollywood talks about her time in GLOW, her thoughts on some of WWF's female talent, and her appearance on the sitcom "Married... with Children". We also discuss Hulk Hogan's use of the "Hollywood" moniker in the late '90s, and she even recites one of her old-school GLOW entrance RAPS! Next up is a hysterical conversation with production designer and author Mick Strawn. Mick tells some absolutely hilarious stories about working on movies like "RUNAWAY TRAIN" (1985) and "BREAKIN' 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO" (1984). And finally, we sat down with the legendary Bebe Buell! Bebe talks about her new book "Rebel Soul" and the re-issue of her first EP "Covers Girl", both of which are being released through her new label HOZAC RECORDS . We discuss her musical partnership with Ric Ocasek, the sexism she has endured throughout her whole career, and also her unheralded (but essential!) role in kickstarting the mid-80s supergroup THE POWER STATION. If you don't recognize the name James Calvin Wilsey, odds are you've heard him. His hypnotic guitar work on Chris Isaak's top ten single from 1989 “Wicked Game” made Isaak an international star. But there is much more to his story than his guitar work on this iconic song.Goldberg's book is an incredibly in-depth look into the dark side of San Francisco in the 1970s & 80s, and the dark side of rock ‘n roll in general, through the wild life of one Jimmy Wilsey. Wilsey was the “heart and soul” of the San Francisco punk band the Avengers, and worked with Chris Isaak for over a decade before he crashed and burned. Wilsey's story is the story of San Francisco punk rock, the story of one of the greatest punk bands, the Avengers, “the story of every working musician,” and the nightmare of drug addiction. It's the story of the dark side of rock & roll. “Wicked Game – The True Story of Guitarist James Calvin Wilsey” includes over 100 photos and flyers by avant-garde artist Bruce Conner, Avengers singer/songwriter Penelope Houston, Blondie's Chris Stein, Ruby Ray, Chester Simpson, Sue Brisk, Marcus Leatherdale, Amy Starks, Michael Zagaris, Hugh Brown, James Stark, Jimmy Wilsey and others. Author Michael Goldberg is a journalist, novelist, and photographer. He's been interviewing and photographing musicians since he was seventeen. He was a senior writer at Rolling Stone magazine for a decade. His writing also appeared in Esquire, New Musical Express, Creem, DownBeat, New York Rocker, Trouser Press, Musician, New West, Vibe, New Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and other publications.Purchase a copy of “Wicked Game: The True Story of Guitarist James Calvin Wilsey" through Hozac Records: https://hozacrecords.com/product/wicked-game/Listen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2UHY7zjdibwNjB8Wv0t7Py?si=7abfc172502e4627Read Michael Goldberg's article on James Wilsey's passing for Rolling Stone: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/king-of-slow-guitarist-james-calvin-wilsey-784335/The Booked On Rock Website: www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/bookedonrockpodcast/?hl=enSupport Your Local Bookstore! I didn't put out a podcast in March, since this one ended up being an absolute MONSTER to put together. Back in Summer of 2016, I did an episode where every song came from my personal collection of 7" singles. That one was so much fun, and I've picked up a bunch of new 45s in the past two years, so why not do it again? EPISODE #64 of Random Old Records contains a whopping 26 new and old jams ranging from stone-cold punk rock classics to the freshest wax of 2018.You will hear a healthy assortment of tracks from Total Punk Records, perhaps the best label currently releasing 45s on a regular basis, including the likes of Lysol, Rik & The Pigs, and Patsy, along with the always reliable Hozac Records, home to Surfbort and Mil Mascaras. In between, there are rippers by ISS, The Number Ones, Buzzcocks, JJ Doll, Good Throb, Terry, Parnsip, and a whole lot more. Also, dig those vintage commercials!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the episode below. I should be back to a regular schedule in May, with no theme other than great music with no algorithms involved. Woah! 2012 is less than two months old, and there's already so much kick-ass rock n' roll coming out that it's making my head spin! So yeah, this time around Random Old Records Podcast #40 is an uninterrupted hour of straight-up jams because there just wasn't any room for the quirky soundbytes you all know and love. HAHA. This fat stack of tracks features one song each from the latest batch of HoZac Records releases, including The Band In Heaven, Radar Eyes, Teledrome, and Bare Mutants, which all rule as usual. Teledrome's super-catchy electro-punk is the real gem this time around. Seriously, give this dude a proper studio and budget and he'll be on the cover of magazines in a year. Mark my words!Random Old Records #40 also features an EXCLUSIVE track from the upcoming second LP by killer Wisconsin garage punk duo The Hussy! It's called "Mind Alright," the LP is called Weed Seizure, and it's set to be released by Tic Tac Totally sometime next month. This record is a monster folks, just check out the sick artwork by Ben Lyon below! Elsewhere, you'll hear BRAND NEW tracks from upcoming releases by The Sugar Stems, Digital Leather, and Terry Malts, current tunes by Coasting, Gap Dream, Wiccans, The Pharmacy, and Gary Wrong, classics from the Angry Samoans and Teengenerate, and more, more, MORE!!! It all finishes up with a modern classic pop tune from former Lost Sounds and River City Tanlines frontwoman Alicja-Pop that will shake you up good if you're paying attention. This is one of my favorite episodes I've coughed up in awhile, so I hope y'all dig it!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! More classic episodes from the past ten years are being added to the feed as well, so check those out as well.
