DSD 5.11 | Subtle Sync changes to synergize estrus with ovulation

Reproductive physiologists are always trying to improve conception rates for the dairy herd. Double ovsync is one of the best tools in our toolbox to submit cows to first insemination. However, as estrus detection technology becomes more affordable and we learn more about physiology, perhaps combining the expression of estrus at insemination may improve fertility through optimizing ovulation timing. Dr. Julio Giordano and Ana Laplacette worked with their Cornell reproduction team to investigate this theory on over 4600 cows in 2 commercial herds. “We are trying to take advantage of the power of sync of ovulation and the power of estrus” Giordano explains. “To get the best of both, synergize the two.” The only change to the well-known Double ovsync protocol includes a delay in the final administration of GnRh before breeding. The goal, allowing the cows more time to show estrus. Take a moment to listen in to better understand the physiology of this synchronization program and how to improve your herd's reproductive management.   Topics of discussion 2:03       Introduction of Dr. Julio Giordano & Ana Laplacette 3:37       Why introduce Estrus detection to double ovsync? 6:25       Treatment description, Double ovsync 9:12       Did you cherry pick? 10:04     What metrics do you focus in on to determine the success of synchronization protocol 11:36     Considerations to grouping animals to best understand the data 13:57     How did you determine “heat” 15:23     Specific difference between G56 and G80 treatments 16:38   Increase in Estrus observed 2.2% vs 29.9% 17:09     Three types of cows –                (1) Show estrus without GnRh, 1/3                (2) Show estrus after GnRh, 1/3                (3) Never show estrus, 1/3   20:01     Anestrus cows – table 5 22:16     Follicle size differences between treatment 26:12     Did it work? Over the past 30 years the reproduction status of dairy has improved substantially, largely due to research around reproduction synchronization. This month we talk to Dr. Paul Fricke and Megan Lauber from the University of Wisconsin, about their recently released paper titled: Effect of postpartum body condition score change on the pregnancy outcomes of lactating Jersey cows inseminated at first service with sexed Jersey or conventional beef semen after a synchronized estrus versus a synchronized ovulation. We discuss the how to maximize the equation of fertility, through management. Once optimized, you'll find your herd entering the “high fertility cycle”. When all the stars align, production is high – disease is low and you are able to begin to stack reproductive technologies – such as genomically determined breedings using sexed and beef semen use following the ideal synchronization. EK On the Go

Join us in this episode (the first of a two-part series) for a conversation with graphic designer Art Chantry, a national treasure, whose posters are collected by The Smithsonian and The Louvre. Opening with childhood memories of Parkland on the fringes of Tacoma, Washington, Art describes a restless educational path that eventually brought him to Bellingham. He shares experiences of his subsequent arrival to Seattle in the 1980's, including street observations that shaped his aesthetics. He tells of art directing the music biweekly magazine The Rocket on a shoestring budget before launching a one-man graphic design firm, churning out hundreds of posters, logos and album covers for rock bands including Soundgarden and Mudhoney associated with Sub Pop, Estrus and other home-grown record labels. Art's stories reveal the genesis of a vital visual lexicon—subversive, populist and modern—that simultaneously reflected and transformed the Pacific Northwest: From a backwater for “losers,” to the forefront of global popular culture in the 1990's and beyond. "It's black and white. Its scrappy. There's not a straight line on the whole goddamn thing. It looks like it was cut and pasted together out of chunks of Xerox junk. It is just an atrocious mess. And it's beautiful…. It's so alive—You still look at it and it makes your heart jump!” ~ Art Chantry

What if you were able to tell within the first 10-14 days of lactation, if a cow would settle to first service – two months later? What tools are being developed to help answer that question? This month we talk with Dr. Stefan Borchardt about work his research team recently completed using AMS (activity monitoring systems) to track the impact of transition, on estrus expression and corelate that to reproductive success or failure. Understanding the correlations described in this month's feature article:  “Effect of transition cow health and estrous expression detected by an automated activity monitoring system within 60 days in milk on reproductive performance of lactating Holstein cows” will help managers link physiological changes to an AMS data set and make tangible changes to improve their reproduction program. Early estrous sets the cow up for success, and AMS will become a data driven way to assess this. Evolutionary Psychology and Sex In this episode, Rebecca tells us about Evolutionary Psychology, examining our roles and interactions through a biological and historical lens. Listen in as she compares our human proclivities to our great ape relatives. Animal Roles – Not an Excuse Our rules and culture help us to maintain our civility, but males and females still have biological roles. Hear Rebecca talk about the basic ideas of a male's desire to spread his seed and a female's inclination to be choosy and selective. Evolution of Lust and Romance While nature and nurture are the major contributing factors to our biology and we share some main characteristics with great apes, there are still major differences between humans and other great apes. Enjoy the show as Rebecca presents a unique series of examples comparing and contrasting sexual differences between great apes and humans. What happened to Estrus? Listen to Rebecca talk about ideas relating to Desmond Morris, famed author of The Naked Ape. Hear some of the modern and historical adaptations that humans have developed as open signs of Estrus are not as readily visible as they are in our great ape relatives. Great Apes and Humans Rebecca presents a viewpoint on Modern Civilization and the inclination towards war and aggressive tendencies. We enjoy some interesting commentary discussing the variations of sexual proclivities in the great ape world and the fascinating habits of one particular species, the Bonobo. How do these perspectives help humans? Tune in to hear Rebecca offer a personal anecdote. We learn the importance of the nose in choosing a mate and how this can help us better understand our similarities to the great apes, and more importantly develop a better understanding between partners. “Understanding our evolutionary past helps us seem, yes, more animalistic, but more human.” Conflict in Power Listen as Rebecca helps to develop further, the understanding of the inequality of power between men and women and the unfortunate consequences. On the Romantic Side What is the importance of a kiss? How does a kiss play a part in romantic behaviors? Join in to hear about the importance of kissing and other romantic behaviors. Is there romance in suicide or jumping out of trees? Find out as Rebecca presents this issue and others within historical and cultural contexts. Listen as Rebecca clarifies the purpose of the texts of the Atharvaveda, the Knowledge Storehouse of Procedures for Everyday Life, and the Kamasutra. We enjoy some lighthearted banter as the discussion continues, comparing these ancient texts with a modern take on kissing tips from Bustle.com. The Importance of Size It's not what you think, as Rebecca clarifies some of her own perspectives along with research that demonstrates women's preferences for something bigger, but it's not about the genitals. We pick up where we left off, at Phase II of the rut, as described by Dr. Ken Nordberg. This show covers Phases II through V. Dr Nordberg wrote a book in the 1980s called Whitetail Hunter's Almanac that is considered by many as the deer hunting bible. Today there are 9 (soon to be 10) editions of the Almanac, each sharing some fascinating insight into the world of the whitetail deer and how to hunt them. Dr Nordberg, otherwise known as "Doc", used to spend over 4000 hours a year studying the whitetail. Interestingly enough, Dr. Nordberg's deer hunting strategy has changed over the years as he recognized new patterns in whitetail behavior relative to hunting. This show is for the beginner and the advanced hunter. #03 - Are we feeding sows too much during the wean-to-estrus period? - Dr. Trey Kellner

Since the covid pandemic began, producers have seen the price of swine feed ingredients increase. With this increased cost, it is important that we research ways that we can save money on feed. In today's talk, Dr. Trey Kellner discusses the results of a trial run at AMVC evaluating different feeding levels during the sow's wean-to-estrus period to see if there are any differences in the sow's reproductive potential when the amount of feed is reduced. Take a short break to get your 9-min weekly swine research digest and hear there interesting results! Dr. Trey Kellner received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 2017, following his B.S. at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. He joined AMVC Nutritional Services as their first Swine Nutritionist. Trey oversees the feeding program for over 150,000 sows and 1.2 million market pigs per year in 9 states across 26 feed mills. Trey sets cost of production, space utilization, and market weight strategies for AMVC and AMVC managed clients, a setting in which dietary energy strategy via fat inclusion level is the most important variable. His recognized research on dietary fat digestion, utilization and deposition combined with his experience in modeling, formulating, and verifying the impact dietary energy via fat inclusion has on the bottom line for pork producers make him an ideal speaker on the subject matter of dietary fat. Trey was named a Young Scholar by the MW section of ASAS in 2017 and was presented with the Stahly/Peo Outstanding Swine Nutrition Graduate Student Award that same year.
