On this long-anticipated episode, I got to sit down with singer/songwriter Sam Burton to talk about the role that practices like Tarot and Jungian dream work have played in his personal growth and resulting creative endeavors/artistic career. We also discussed the evolution of his method of reading Tarot for others, and the delicate ethical considerations of this vulnerable but powerful work.Sam's song featured in the episode is “I Can Go With You”Follow Sam's work and various projects here and here!Psyche Magic Website, Socials and more!More on Sam Burton: Born and raised outside of Salt Lake City, Sam Burton moved to LA to pursue music. In the last year he toured with Loving and Jose Gonzalez. He recently wrapped up a three-week residency at Los Angeles' Club TeeGee, and will head out on the road with Weyes Blood and Indigo Sparke in the coming months. To coincide with the news of his signing to Partisan Records, Burton has released the new song “Maria.”“Maria” was produced by Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, Margo Price) at his Topanga Canyon Studio with some of the best studio players in LA, and perfectly showcases Burton's knack for mining pure Laurel Canyon AM gold. Pastoral string arrangements bloom in the background of Sam's striking honeyed vocals-like a modern-day Campbell, Orbison, or Nilsson.Together, Wilson and Burton achieve a sound that doesn't descend into retro pastiche, but rather becomes an evocative echo, a dream of the past. In scope, the music finds Burton using a far bigger canvas than on his acclaimed 2020 debut I Can Go With You, giving the emotions therein a new sense of urgency and intensity. The Psyche Magic Salon is a reader-supported publication. On today's episode we're bringing you the second installment of a mini-series of conversations from Zara Hedderman that explore the various practicalities, challenges and, of course, the joys of running a record label in Ireland. In the first episode, we heard from Leitrim-based Willie Stewart of Nyahh Records, who shared great insights into the label's catalog and more, since that episode has come out there's been announcements of exciting forthcoming releases to come from Nyahh so do keep an ear out for them!Today, we make the journey (in our imaginations, at least) from Leitrim to County Louth, parking up in Dundalk where we'll hear from Joey Edwards - co-founder of Pizza Pizza Records, sound engineer extraordinaire and musician in his own right. Founded in 2018, Pizza Pizza Records, is an independent artist-led label, and it struck gold with its inaugural release Wednesday, the critically acclaimed and Choice Prize nominated debut from Just Mustard. That album not only announced Just Mustard as an act that audiences outside of Ireland were getting excited about, but it immediately asserted Pizza Pizza Record's reputation of a label working with the best in Ireland's independent acts up and down the country and certainly one worthy of being bookmarked to keep up with the buzzing independent scene. Today, the label's roster has expanded to include Clara Tracey, Elaine Malone, Trick Mist, The Altered Hours, and Larry and Elephant. In this episode, Zara and Joey talk about Wednesday's impact on Pizza Pizza Records and the initial period of operating as a label, how they maintained momentum and how things progressed from that first offering. Notably, Just Mustard have since signed to Partisan Records – with Fontaines DC and Aoife Nessa Frances as labelmates – and Joey, who co-manages the band, reflects on the ways that working with Partisan has inspired different ways to keep Pizza Pizza going sustainably while keeping audiences engaged. In this regard, community and connection – aside from providing a platform for excellent independent Irish artists - were two things Joey kept circling back on when discussing the label's evolution and the general DIY climate both locally and abroad. We touched on the role of physical media given Pizza Pizza's viny-forward MO and its importance within the foundation of DIY communities whether it's finding like-minded people in local record shops or in the queue at the merch table after a gig. You never know where a conversation will take you! Thanks so much for joining us again, and for all your wonderful feedback on the Nyahh Records conversation, it's greatly appreciated. We hope you enjoy learning about Pizza Pizza Records in this episode and maybe afterwards are inspired to set up your own independent label. We'll be back soon, but until then, here's Joey Edwards of Pizza Pizza Records.Featured songs:Larry - Liarhttps://larrymusic.bandcamp.com/album/larryJust Mustard - Deafhttps://justmustard.bandcamp.com/album/wednesdayElaine Malone - My Baby's Dead (Redux)https://elainemalone.bandcamp.com/album/pyrrhic0:00 - Zara Hedderman intro link3:20 - Pizza Pizza Origin and Joey's background in music11:00 - Label Model or inspiration13:00 - First release, Just Mustard's debut album Wednesday19:30 Co-managing Just Mustard, learning from other industry experts25:30 - Changes since Pizza Pizza began in 201827:10 - Vinyl focus for the label33:20 - Creating a sense of community via records35:30 - Discussion on streaming and valuing music38:10 - Elaine Malone43:45 - Advice for other people considering starting a record label

Sabrina Teitelbaum (aka Blondshell) wants more joy in her songs. But that can be a problem because happiness is not a productive state for her songwriting process. "When I'm happy, I don't feel the need to write as much," she told me. No matter her emotional state, though, the key Teitelbaum's fruitful songwriting process is not making it look too much like a process. The more precious she makes the process, the harder it can be to write. "Normalizing it makes me more productive," she says. For example, Teitelbaum often finds herself inspired at inopportune times, like when she's rushing to get somewhere. Yet some awareness of what works is important too, which is why I love the perfect balance in her credo: "Know your process but respect the mystery."Blondshell's self-titled debut album is out now on Partisan Records. It's really, really good.

Where I'm Meant To Be - Где мне суждено быть. ©️ 2022 Partisan Records Femi Koleoso - drums Toyosi Jonathan Koleoso - bass James Mollison - tenor sax Joe Armon-Jones - keys Dylan Jones - trumpet Приглашенные музыканты: Sampa the Great - vocals Kojey Radical - vocals Emile Sandé - vocals Nao - vocals #geggae #funk #fusion --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/konstantins/message

We had the pleasure of interviewing The Black Angels over Zoom video.Austin's psych-rock legends will release their brand new album Wilderness of Mirrors on September 16 with Partisan Records. Today, the band has revealed experimental single “Firefly”, a ‘60s French pop homage which features the sultry intonations in both French and English from Thievery Corporation's LouLou Ghelichkani. The new song follows acclaimed lead single/video “El Jardín'' which features Austin Amelio from The Walking Dead and stars his son Lev.The most impactful music reflects a wide-screen view of the world back at us, helping distill the universal into something far more relatable. The Black Angels have become standard-bearers for modern psych-rock that does exactly that, which is one of many reasons why the group's new album feels so aptly named. It has been 5 years since fans have been treated to an album from the band and Wilderness of Mirrors marks a triumphant return with their foot on the pedal. The new collection expertly refines the Black Angels' psychedelic rock attack alongside a host of intriguing sounds and textures while political tumult, the pandemic, and the ongoing devastation of the environment have provided ample fodder for their signature sound and fierce lyrical commentary. Since forming in 2004 in Austin, TX, the Black Angels remain masterfully true to psych-rock forebears such as Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson, Arthur Lee and the members of the Velvet Underground, all of whom are namechecked on “The River.” The band's global influence is solidified by their beloved, long-running Levitation Festival, the veritable ground zero for the genre's past, present and future -- celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Of course we also delve into his formative creative experiences — from setting up a makeshift drum kit with boxes and pots and pans to recreate a drum fill in Bad Religion's “American Jesus” (“There was something so symmetrical about it — it reminded me of a dolphin jumping out of the water and creating an arc in the air…”) to memorizing poems in exchange for football cards (an inspired parenting idea from his dad), to playing in a group that actually won their local battle of the bands, to realizing during early gigs as a frontman that he felt an uncanny sense of calm while performing. Skinty Fia comes out April 22nd via Partisan Records and you can pre-save or pre-order it HERE.
Just Mustard - "I Am You," a 2021 single on Partisan. Irish quintet Just Mustard caught our ears with their powerful noise rock debut Wednesday, an album that earned them a Choice Music Prize nomination for Album of the Year in 2018. Since then, they've signed to Partisan Records and have shared a first look at a sophomore release (projected released: 2022) with today's Song of the Day. The moody, shoegaze-tinged track was produced by the band and mixed by David Wrench (FKA twigs, The xx, Caribou). The accompanying video, directed by Dylan Friese-Greene, captures the song's eerie vibe, with vocals from Katie Ball reminiscent of Alison Shaw of Cranes. Born in Tunisia, Emel evokes her childhood and her musical beginnings. Singing in English and in Arabic, sometimes in French, Emel talks about identity as a language of creation. What is it to be a Francophone and belong to this French-speaking cultural world? Her latest album, still in the making, is dedicated to women and among them, the most vulnerable. " I change the story to change History and create a virtuous circle", says Emel. Emel is participating to a virtual concert organized by the Cultural Center of the Lycée Francais de New York and live on Saturday, March 20, 2021 on the Cultural Center facebook page Music credits: "Ensen Dhaif" by Emel "Everywhere we look is burning" by Emel "Fi Kolli Yawmen" by Emel "Kelmti Horra" by Emel "Je t'aime encore" ( Album D'Eux by Celine Dion) Maxime Boublil ( intro music) Special thanks to Partisan Records and Annie Ohayon.

This month's edition of the podcast is a little different than usual. We have no guest. We play whole songs at the end in a playlist (time stamped track list below). And most importantly we discuss three big pieces of news for us! News: 1. Appointment Shopping is now available! More details at this link. 2. We are moving! A bigger store is coming (just a short distance away in Wallingford). More details to come. We hope to be open in the new space for Black Friday (November 27th). 3. We are releasing a record by Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean! It is called The Vestige and it is all of their long out of print records in one giant package! A double LP in a tri-fold jacket with incredible new art. More on all of that on the podcast. Plus, the side note that we'll be running the next RSD Drop in the same way we did the September Drop so look out for that at the end of the month. The Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean record can be pre-ordered now through our Big Cartel page here: https://redscrollrecords.bigcartel.com/product/pre-order-rsr-025-chained-to-the-bottom-of-the-ocean-the-vestige-2xlp 250 copies on White/Black Vinyl and 250 on Black Vinyl Full Time Stamped Track List: [00:00] Airhorn Intro [06:41] Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean “I've Got A Gut Feeling” I Carry My Awareness of Defeat Like a Banner of Victory / The Vestige (Fucking Kill Records / Redscroll Records) [13:09] Slikback “Black” /// (self released) [16:22] Sarah Davachi “Play the Ghost” Cantus, Descantus (Late Music) [21:11] Makaya McCraven “Kings and Queens” Universal Beings E & F Sides (International Anthem) [25:49] Dame “Mensrea” Dame (Beach Impediment Records) [28:50] Sevdaliza “Joanna” Shabrang (Butler Records / Music On Vinyl) [33:00] PJ Harvey “Sheela-Na-Gig” Dry (Too Pure / Island Records) [36:03] Vatican Shadow “Rehearsing For The Attack” Persian Pillars Of The Gasoline Era (20 Buck Spin) [41:32] Uniform “Dispatches From The Gutter” Shame (Sacred Bones Records) [43:41] Idles “War” Ultra Mono (Partisan Records) [46:43] Realize “Disappear” Machine Violence (Relapse Records) [50:06] Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean “Hollow Feeds The Emptying Death” Decay and Other Hopes Against Progress / The Vestige (Howling Frequency / Redscroll Records) The Redscroll Podcast is a monthly show (new episodes on the first of the month) that works as a companion to what we do at Redscroll Records in Wallingford, CT USA. We are a record store that has a heavy emphasis on the left of center / underground music of the world. Whether it be underappreciated or just has a niche audience, marginalized or just off the radar it's all of interest to us. With the show we'll generally have a localized focus. We'll discuss what is in our personal rotation at the moment. We'll talk to guests who have to do with all of the above. And we'll talk about specific dealings with the store. Well we made it to episode ten, wow! Can you believe it, those last ten weeks have flown by!Welcome along to Episode Ten of Adventures In New Music the podcast featuring two mates and two brand spanking new albums. This week Chris and Andy have a chat about Heaven To A Tortured Mind by Yves Tumor and Welcome To Bobby's Motel by Pottery.Heaven To A Tortured Mind is Yves Tumor's fourth studio album. Expect an absolute melting pot of genres from experimental rock, soul and britpop on this impressive rollercoaster of an album. This album has had rave reviews and topped many peoples mid year best of charts so there's high hopes for this album. Lead single 'Gospel For A New Century' is a proper banger too, and that's a good a place as any to start if you fancied getting your teeth into this album.Chris first heard Texas Drums by Pottery back in February and has been excitingly waiting for the release of this album since then. This album was finally released in June on Partisan Records (home to Idles, Cigarettes After Sex and Fontaines DC) after being put back a few months due to the corona virus. This album races from song to song, section to section and takes your breath away from the get go. For fans of bands such of Parquet Courts and White Denim. Dive in to Bobby Motel, wherever and whatever that is...As well as our featured albums, this week has been a big week for both the chaps when it comes to checking out new stuff. Chris has a couple of hip hop recommendations from 2020 – RTJ4 by Run The Jewels and in particular the track JU$T featuring Pharrell Williams and Zack de la Rocha, and he also loses his mind over the opening track from Alfredo by Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist, '1985'. Couple of top tracks there to satisfy your hip hop needs. Andy's really gone to town on new stuff this week (as well as another revisit to the Deftones back catalogue in preparation for the new album which is getting teased). He's also discovered a singer/songwriter called Daniel Martin Moore and gets round to listening to the latest, and very highly critically acclaimed, Fiona Apple album 'Fetch The Bolt Cutters'.There's also Andy's country corner in which he recommends having a gander at That's How Rumours Get Started by Margo Price, Xoxo by The Jayhawks and Co-Starring by Ray Wylie Hubbard (featuring amongst others, Mr Richard Starkey) so be sure to check those out if country is your thing. Also, you must listen to The Avalanche by Owen. Owen is the solo project from American Football frontman Mike Kinsella and after the American Football album being one of the favourites of last year this album really doesn't disappoint. Beautifully intense and gorgeously magnificent!Chris and Andy also checked out Jeremy Gara's new 'single' with varying opinions...To get in touch with the show at adventuresinnewmusic@gmail.com and give us a follow on instagram. And don't forget to like and subscribe to Adventures In New Music so we'll sneak in your podcast inbox each Friday at 9am GMT.We have also added a playlist to our website. Every week we'll add a tune from our featured artists giving you a good starting place to go on and have a listen to any of the albums we feature that might tickle your fancy. Follow the link here...We'll see thee!
IDLES - “Grounds” from the 2020 album Ultra Mono on Partisan Records. Bristol-based post-punk band IDLES return this fall with their third LP, titled Ultra Mono, out September 25th via Partisan. They've previously shared the singles "A Hymn" and “Mr. Motivator,” and for today's Song of the Day, we're sharing the single "Grounds." Frontman Joe Talbot explained in a press release: “We wanted to write a song that embodied self-belief, and gave us self-belief — a counter-punch to all the doubt we build up from all the noise we so easily let in. We wanted to make the sound of our own hearts’ marching band, armed with a jack hammer and a smile. We wanted to make the sound of our engine starting. So we did. Thank you.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate

Fontaines D.C. - "A Hero's Death" from the 2020 album A Hero's Death on Partisan Records. Don't ask Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten about the meaning behind today's KEXP Song of the Day. "I'm not sure myself," he confesses to theBBC. "I purposefully keep the things I write open to interpretation, even to myself." But the track also serves as the title of the Irish post-punk band's forthcoming full-length, out July 31st via Partisan Records. "I found the idea quite funny — because I'm half-expecting people to dislike [the album]," he continued. "So, the idea of calling it A Hero's Death is kind of laughing about that and setting people up for disappointment." Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate

Erika Wennerstrom, the lead of Heartless Bastards, released her debut solo album, “Sweet Unknown,” in March of 2018 on Partisan Records. Wennerstrom’s solo songs are built on the same blues and folk foundations as her songs with the Bastards, but her flirtations with both psychedelic sounds and pop sensibilities are both ambitious and clear on “Sweet Unknown.” Although the break with the band was mutual, Wennerstrom seems to be basking in newfound freedom, singing “I walk around this crowded town / I had to re-find my way / You know I couldn't remain the same / What it is, what it is, what it is / Don't fight the change within” on her song “Good to Be Alone.” Set List: Extraordinary Love Twisted Highway - interview - Staring Out the Window Letting Go Wennerstrom also performed a cover of Townes Van Zandt's "Be Here to Love Me" that is available on the WCPO Lounge Acts YouTube channel. -- Erika Wennerstrom's second WCPO Lounge Acts session was recorded on June 14, 2019 in the WCPO Digital Lounge in Cincinnati, OH. WCPO Lounge Acts features intimate in-studio performances and interviews from outstanding musical artists. Mixed by Brian Niesz. Hosted by Emmalee Smith.
DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: The best (and most fun) way to improve your weak hand flipper technique. #ProTip (Part 1 of the Podcast only content) There is no such thing as apply or lime flavor candy, that shit's just sugar (proving that summertime sports talk is even dumber than non-summertime sports talk). Cavs hire a 66 year old coach who has been successful at every level... Only thing is he's never coached at the pro level before. Oh boy, here we go again. Apologizing in advance for praising the (unfortunate at is for CLE fans) utter greatness of Steph Curry. (Part 2 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:02:00 mark) Let Me Tell You A Story (Best Of Edition!): Lachlan MacKinnon’s “Never Forget The Golden State Warriors Blew It” (begins at the 1:04:00 mark) Dan Gilbert simply doesn't deserve to win the rights to Zion Williamson, period. Meanwhile, it appears his former GM David Griffin very much did. How's that for karma. What the fuck is grease belly? And a story about throwing chicken bones out the car window. (Part 3 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:49:00 mark) Steph Curry is so recognizably great, and yet he's somehow underrated. Which is fucking insane to consider but it's also very much true. Mollie's Weekly Report: Minor League Grinders, and some of the real horrors of playing in minor-league baseball. (Part 4 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:39:00 mark) Over/Under Gaming: The Aladdin live action remake and all the reason's it's sure to be a total piece of shit. Weekly Tribe Playoff Probabilities: Week 9 – Going 5-1 this past week wasn't enough to improve things, apparently. Beiber K's 15 in a complete game shutout, and knowing at least in part just how he was so effective because of a new beater who's covering the team, and doing a much better job of it than the beat writers who are 2 and 3 times their senior. All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. Enjoy~ Check out Lachlan MacKinnon’s best selling book, ‘Let Me Tell You A Story: Small Stories Of A Large Family’! Thank you to KidForce Pinball for sponsoring the podcast, 91.1-FM WRUW Cleveland for being home to the show, engineer extraordinaire Mollie Ames, and to the city that inspires us, Cleveland, Ohio. Your recommended listening for the week is the debut album by Fontaines D.C. entitled "Dogrel" and available via Partisan Records. The intro and outro to Lachlan’s segment is the song “My Summer In Traction” by the band Ohio Civil War , and it’s used with permission.
DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: Home remedies, the right kind of syrups, and you better have oral sex on the menu even if you're a vegan. (Part 1 of the Podcast only content) The legend of "Big Mamma", Mollie's "musical choices" and how sometimes things are not what they appear to be on this show. We were away for one week and all of a sudden the Browns are Super Bowl favorites?! Everything that actually matters about the Odell Beckham trade. There is Stadium Mustard which is flavorful and spicy, and then there is the outer rim and yellow mustard. If you say you live in Cleveland then you should always offer Stadium mustard as an option, period. Making up for some of the lost segments we missed out on last week from being sick (Part 2 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:06:00 mark) Let Me Tell You A Story: Lachlan MacKinnon’s “The Walking Wounded” (begins at the 1:21:00 mark) After 40 years of actively avoiding it in every way possible, Mike finally does something he'd thought he would never, ever do... He went and saw KISS live in concert. Giving love to pinball and our sponsors, after first talking about wanting to kick a baby... (Part 3 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:56:00 mark) Explaining how the seeding in the NCAA Tournament works, and then talking about Euro futbol instead because the systemically racist and morally corrupt system of big business United States "amateur athletics" is unacceptably awful. What's up with cute animals running a billboard campaign to "Save The Humans"? (Part 4 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:38:00 mark) "Diaper Party", it's a whole thing. Your recommended listening for the week is the Idles and their 2018 album, "Joy As An Act Of Resistance", available via Partisan Records. Not too much politics this time around (although we do actually bring a message of hope to y’all despite all the crappiness!), but we are talking HOCKEY — yes, hockey — with this Happy Canadian, before launching into a rapid fire Modiba update, highlighting Modiba veteran BOMBINO — he of the Sultan of Swing from the Sahel — as well as up and comers Ladama. And just as an extra treat, I got so FIERY clips of both artists for you wonderful people, as well as a tease of other Modiba projects around the bend and a future, more in-depth podcasts about the ups and downs (sadly mostly downs) of the current state of immigration and the global music industry in 2018, even as more and more insane talents pop up all over the world. This is a fun and, given my track record, fairly concise podcast. And again — HOCKEY. How can you resits Hockey AND guitar shredding from West Africa. Enjoy my people! Amanda Hone has a 'hobby that got out of hand': traversing the UK, visiting myriad miscellaneous landmarks designated by brown signs. In this interview, she explains to Olly how an initial visit to an otter and owl sanctuary made her put down her phone, take the road less travelled and discover the quirky attractions around her - and enthuse others to do the same. In the spirit of 'brown-signing', Olly then takes a trip of his own: to the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, where curator Tim Arnold tells him why, 'when you grow up and become a man, you play a real man's game - you play pinball'. Find out more at followthebrownsigns.com and pinballmuseum.org Elsewhere in the episode, Ollie Peart considers the latest trends in The Zeitgeist, including crawling to keep fit, the Hollywood pocketwatch revival, and the death of 'the masked musician'. If you have a trend you'd like to suggest for a future episode, do tweet us @themodernmann. And, down The Foxhole, Alix Fox reveals the super-powers of 'magic wand massagers' such as the Lovehoney's tokidoki, the UK-made Doxey Wand, and Hitachi's big-seller. Plus, she has some advice for a listener who says he's attracted to oral sex with 'she-males' - but is otherwise straight. If you've got a question of sex for Alix, just submit it via the feedback form on our website, modernmann.co.uk. The Foxhole is sponsored by our friends at mycondom.com, who are offering Modern Mann listeners an incredible 15% OFF when you use the code 'FOXHOLE' at Checkout. Finally, as ever, we have a cracking choon to end the show. This week, it's 'Radio', by Sylvan Esso, out now on Partisan Records. Episode 4 dives into the history of lesser known American record production and songwriting, uncovers various Neil Young imitators and features a mini-section on the significance and extreme depression of Del Shannon. Under the same spell of classic American records, Holy Sons has just announced a new collaborative record with legendary producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. Kurt Vile). "In the Garden" sets Emil's songwriting into the atmosphere of the kind of early 70's records you'd pull out while slamming whiskeys by the fireplace late into the night (out Oct. 21st on Partisan Records). So, while getting wasted and going deep in the search for a classicism that truly satisfies, Drifter's Sympathy dusts off lost curiosities left by some of the original 'American Trailblazers'.
We spoke to songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes, Dungeonesse) about her forthcoming solo album, success, and badass jumpsuits. Her first full-length as Flock of Dimes, "If You See Me, Say Yes," will be out on Partisan Records on September 23. For more information and tour dates, visit http://www.flockofdimes.com/ Jenn is also touring in support of the most recent Wye Oak release, "Tween," which came out earlier this year on Merge Records. http://wyeoakmusic.com/ This episode features music from Jenn's various musical projects (obv), as well as Lower Dens, Wume, Judee Sill, and Mary Margaret O'Hara. The Curator Podcast: Episode 28 – Ewan Grant from WOMPSAh, dear listener. I apologies for missing a week. I feel terrible about it. The fact that I didn't post an episode on my regular schedule has kept me up at night ever since. I value you. I value your time, your attention and the fact that you choose to make me a part of your day.Let me explain what happened in the hope that you might be able to forgive me.Usually I like to have an interview or two in the bank for eventualities such as this, but I left myself short on content. After I conducted this interview with Ewan I formatted the SD card in my recorder thinking that I had removed the file, then I promptly took a week off and went to Marrakech for my 30th birthday. When I returned the interview was nowhere to be seen. I started to make plans with Ewan to re-do it.Then I ran some recovery software on the SD card and managed to retrieve the interview. The crisis somewhat averted, I decided just to treat the missed episode as a holiday week and return to my regularly scheduled programming the following week. And so here we are, back on track with an interview I once thought lost but has now been found. And it's a really good interview!I sat down with Ewan in the 13th Note Café in Glasgow, the lovely staff there allowing us to sit in their restaurant type bit to have a chat. Ewan is a lovely guy and I had a really good time talking to him and talking about all things WOMPS, Algernon Doll, Steve Albini, Black metal and feminism, amongst other things.Highlights include:Wanting to be a footballer but not liking the lad cultureSkateboarding leading to guitar playingBeing in hardcore bands as a teenager and losing those people he played withExpressing feelings of loss through songwriting“You can only feel sorry for yourself for a certain amount of time”Algernon Doll being terrifyingMoving from WOMPS to Algernon DollThe influence of Elliott SmithNot searching for a songwriting partner but finding one anywaySongwriting influences – John Lennon, George Harrison, Frank Ocean, Danish Post PunkNot being able to mention good Paul McCartney songsSeparating art from the artists (specifically talking about Michael Jackson, R Kelly, Lostprophets and Burzum)Some black metal discussion and DeafheavenRecording with Steve Albini and how he feels about being asked about it a lotBeing put up by Steve Albini when stuck in Chicago for the second timeGetting a pass from Partisan Records and how Steve's attitude helped them move onThe advantage of having a booking agent instead of booking shows themselvesHaving a team of women around themHow the punk scene is trying to avoid misogyny but shows are still 90% male in attendanceIs the indie scene better for women?Lots of love for Make that a Take and Book Yer Ane FestHow the DIY ethos is still importantGetting involved with DamnablyEwan's worked very hard over the years and it's brilliant to see that it's now paying off with WOMPS. Their sound has definitely evolved from his older solo stuff and I'm really excited to hear their album next year.I hope you enjoy this episode. And I hope that you forgive me for being a week late.
