The tasty riffs of Guitar World Magazine, Travis Barker's Mushroom gummies, and Paul Anka's cover album. Noah Guevara (Meatbodies) "From left to right: Noah Guevara, Chad Ubovich, Casey Hanson, Dylan Fujioka Meatbodies' latest undertaking and borderline lost album, Flora Ocean Tiger Bloomis their most varied and realized work to date. It's a melodic, hook filled rock epic in which frontman and lead guitarist Chad Ubovich faces the trials of sobriety, redemption, reinvention while literally, learning to walk and play again. Resurrection not only accompanies the record, but its production as well, Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom examines themes surrounding love and loss, escapism, defeatism, hedonism, psychedelics and much more. “The last record was more of a cartoon version of who we were– simple and fun without delving into heavy concepts,” recalls Ubovich. "The whole thing before with Meatbodies was never sit down, next part, next part, but I wanted to make something with more depth. After everything that had happened, and my personal life, I was left with this feeling of emptiness and loss. So I wanted to make music that was absent from things– songs that were more about conveying feeling.” March 8th of next year, Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom finally sees its release via In The Red. Its lead single and video “Hole,” out now, is pure alternative rock sweetness and clearly a nod to an amalgamation of shoegaze juggernauts from yesteryear. Backed by a brand-new video by Matt Yoka, “Hole” is immediate, dosed with enough pop and psilocybin to appease fans of both heavy rock and a quality melody. “That was one of the first songs I wrote, and I think it's really indicative of that time,” says Ubovich. “How I was thinking and feeling and what I wanted to accomplish with this LP before I even knew it.”" Excerpt from https://intheredrecords.com/collections/meatbodies Meatbodies: Bandcamp: https://meatbodies-band.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @meatbodiesofficialauthentic Website: https://linktr.ee/meatbodies Records: https://intheredrecords.com/collections/meatbodies/products Merch: https://www.merchbar.com/rock-alternative/meatbodies Danketsu 10: Bandcamp: https://patrickshiroishi.bandcamp.com/album/from-a-distance-everything-shines The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

Two bigs wins capped a season of accomplishments for Niels Vandeputte of Alpecin Deceuninck. After overcoming an off-season injury, he raced more times than any other rider in 2023/2024 all while balancing college studies with the Kersperiode, managing final exams with his World Championship preparation, and still having a enough gas in the tank to race in February. This is the story of a true cross racer. @curtisjwhite www.curtisjwhite.com @niels_vandeputte inthered@curtisjwhite.com
After 12 World Championship preparations and 11 starts, we look back at 2023/2024 and discuss the best off season format for a cyclocross racer - should a crosser be focused on gravel, road, crit, mtb? Curtis has done it all: where does he get his best results? As part of that analysis, we take a look a the French National Team for some additional insight. (see link below). All the work is done, and it's time to see where Curtis stands among the best in the world. In less than one week, he takes the startline at the World Championship for the 11th time in his career. His approach has been a bit different, only racing a short three-race block in Europe (as opposed to his traditional heavy 10-12 race schedule during the legendary Kerstperiode). The night before he flies to Prague, we reflect on his preparation, his performance at World Cup Hoogerheide, and preview Sunday's World Championship race. inthered@curtisjwhite.com @curtisjwhite www.curtisjwhite.com
Curtis is back racing in Europe, and we're back with another watch party. Benidorm was fireworks for 60 mins with Curtis on the startline for all the action - was it the greatest non-championship race of all time? So says Tony. Fire-up the trainer, or serve up some snacks and a cold beverage, hit the replay below and join the party. It's Wolrd Cup Benidorm 2024! In this Episode we will take time to question just how do artists of all ranks take in millions and billions when most people seem to think the overall product is anything but priceless. How does one painting sell for hundreds of millions? Who is buying it and what does that money then get spent on? How do corporations push multimillion dollar agendas even if the return puts them "In The Red?" Why does the most mindless music or simply playing a sport pay more than any teacher could dream of. How does one person make more than an entire country?!!? This and plenty more will be the topic of this important episode. Clover Stroud is a journalist and the award-nominated author of books including the Sunday Times bestselling My Wild and Sleepless Nights. In The Red of My Blood, she recalls how her sister Nell Gifford, founder of Gifford's circus, died of breast cancer at just 46. Days before, Nell had been given years to live. This raw, lyrical and ultimately hopeful memoir examines how death, once embraced, can exist alongside us, and even enrich our daily lives. It has already drawn acclaim from Elizabeth Gilbert, Lisa Taddeo and Juliet Nicholson among others. 5x15 brings together five outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations. IN THE RED can be seen as place of such deficit and despair. It is time to flip the script. It is in these moments that we are presented an amazing opportunity. An opportunity to take notice of the resources around us that stretch us, expand us, restore us, and fill us that have gone unnoticed. People who have gone unnoticed because they do not look like us, act like us, or sound like us. Let's get uncomfortable in the deficit moments as we realize the answer is closer than we think. www.instagram.com/a_hart757 www.facebook.com/anthonyhart www.gogcc.org

In the Red Records was founded by Larry Hardy Thirty years ago. He's been the sole owner and operator the entire time putting out records by such notable acts as Jon Spencer, Ty Segall, Kid Congo, Alice Bag, Jay Reatard, King Khan and one of my all-time personal favorites The Strange Boy. For the record the list of artists Larry has put out is too long for these show notes. Larry joins me in a conversation about his early days as a Punk fan seeing such bands as The Germs, to getting the itch to start a label and releasing his first single with The Gories to how he grew the In The Red to be the well respected Punk label that it is today. Larry also shares a great story about a week long Party King Khan threw in his LA home while he was away on vacation. We discussed the legacy and experiences of Occupy Wall Street with two movement participants Marina Sitrin and Vanessa Zettlers, contributors to the recent title Pandemic Solidarity: Mutual Aid during the Covid-19 Crisis published by Pluto Press. Our conversation touched on the ways to recover the real history of OWS and overcome "historical forgetting," the mechanics of OWS through forms of direct democracy such as assemblies and working groups, and the lessons learned from this movement including the need to better anticipate "the fist of the state." In The Red Records, an independent music label based in Los Angeles, has provided Laborwave permission to use music from their artists on the show! This episode featured the following In The Red artists: Tyvek- Real Estate and Finance, off their 2016 album "Origin of What" Osees-Don't Blow Your Experiment, from their upcoming album "Panther Rotate" from Castle Face Records. If you've been listening to Random Old Records for awhile, you'll know that weather and the seasons are one of the primary inspirations behind the music on the show. Dreams, dreaming, and dreamy music is the order of the day. Everything is transforming and reality is realer than ever, and I find myself closing my eyes and dreaming of dinner at my favorite restaurant, a quick browse at the record store, and a stop at the Creamy Whip on the way home. EPISODE #83 of Random Old Records Podcast might not include any Moby Grape this time around, but it's still filled with music dedicated to good dreams and things that make you happy. This trip around the land of nod includes a touch of the psychedelic, plenty of insistent drum beats, sawing strings, soaring synths, a little mysticism, a little drama, and vocal harmonies out the wazoo. You'll hear new and old jams from Once And Future Band, Honeybus, Riki, Yumi Zouma, Wax Idols, The Crabs, John Foxx, Cold Beat, and so much more. In between the songs, you will hear bits from the 1974 movie Mr. Sycamore, a wacky slice of vintage new age nonsense about a man who wants to become a tree. Plant your feet, grab some water, and let this episode be the soundtrack!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. Somehow we got John McAfee, the guy who created McAfee antivirus in the 90s and then went insane and moved to Belize to live in a compound and become a sort of drug and sex fueled super villain, to come on our podcast and talk about eating his own dick. This is not an endorsement of him, it is just something that happened. Look folks we need the damn retweets. THEN we talk a little bit about how New York City is literally overflowing with the dead. AND THEN we talk to Josh Androsky and David Jette from In The Red, their new podcast demystifying wonky confusing economic issues for the LEFT. 2019 is nearly over, and I don't feel like doing a best of the year playlist, so I figured the next best thing to do would be to go back in time! EPISODE #78 is the annual 5/10/15/20 episode of Random Old Records, which surveys the best or most interesting music from 5, 10, 15, and 20 years ago.1999 features emo and pop punk from Saves The Day, American Football, and the Get Up Kids, while 2004 brings indie anthems from Aloha and Panthers. Going back 10 years to 2009, you'll hear classic garage pop from Grass Widow, Strange Boys, and King Automatic, and 2014 finishes things up with dreamy psych by The Paperhead and the Allah-Las. 2020 will bring more brand new jams to Random Old Records, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy the retro ride!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. How did American politics become so polarized? MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki points to clash of two larger-than-life characters in the 1990s, Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich, as the origin of our viciously tribal politics. In The Red and The Blue: The 1990s and the Birth of Political Tribalism (Ecco, 2018), Kornacki traces the political journeys of the two. We see how Clinton won the argument about the ideological future of the Democratic Party when liberal titan Mario Cuomo bowed out of the 1992 presidential primary. And we see how Gingrich seized power in the Republican Party by eschewing bipartisan comity and forcing the ouster of Democratic House Speaker Jim Wright. The two figures would tangle throughout most of the Clinton presidency, with Gingrich suffering his own ouster after the push to impeach Clinton backfires in the 1998 midterms. But after impeachment and the years of brawling, the nation remains so divided that the 2000 presidential election has to be decided by the Supreme Court. Kornacki also explores the 1992 candidacies of Pat Buchanan and Ross Perot, as well as the aborted 2000 Reform Party candidacy of Donald Trump, to better understand the populism of today. Bill Scher is a Contributing Editor for POLITICO Magazine. He has provided political commentary on CNN, NPR and MSNBC. He has been published in The New York Times, The New Republic, and The New York Daily News among other publications. He is author of Wait! Don’t Move to Canada, published by Rodale in 2006. Vulgar (guitar/vocals) made it in six months in spring 2018 with Jeff Giant (bass) and Blake “Bovver” Hill (drums), two guys who’ve been the beating about-to-burst heart of the Organism for about three albums now, including one for Third Man and one for In The Red. “I’ve been on almost every single underground garage punk label there is,” says T.V. proudly, and now he’s the fresh meat on Burger. But when you hear a Timmy Vulgar record, you will know it’s a Timmy Vulgar record and nobody else’s record, and Survival of the Fiendish is an extremely Timmy Vulgar record. Even more Vulgar! It’s as Vulgar as Vulgar gets. Sure, make connections: “Guzzle Gasoline” is like Raw Power-ed freak rock; “God of Comedy” is like Destroy All Monsters on a solo Roky nightmare trip; “Bitter Pill” is like one of those Cleveland 197X tearjerkers—Rocket From The Tombs, Dead Boys, ain’t it fun?—about losing your mind to and “Wall Of Grey” is post-apocalypse proto-punk just like Chrome and Mick Farren knew would come true. It’s been almost twenty years and Timmy Vulgar is still the king of hard-to-make (and harder to fake) rock ‘n’ freak ‘n’ roll made from black light and white heat. He’s been covered in bloodstains, killed by death, ripped from the crypt and sent back from the grave. He worked long and hard to get you this music. He went out into the dark and brought back fire. That’s what must be done to survive.

Sometimes Random Old Records takes a lot of work to put together, but this one fell together smooth and easy. I guess it makes sense that the general vibe of EPISODE #67 is nice and laid back as well, coasting on twanging guitars, harmonies both cheesy and transcendent, pounding pianos, burbling electric organs, lots of woah oh's, shout-outs to comic book characters, and real-deal emotions. That's just a long-winded way to say that you will hear classic pub rock from Brinsley Schwarz and Eggs Over Easy, new excitement from Greg Ashley, The Golden Boys, and Lavender Flu, and a cherry-picked selection of raw and rare private-press soul and psychedelic rock from some amazing compilations. Tune out of the insanity of the world for an hour and dive into some adventurous and soothing jams!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. Feedtime: Engineered by Alicia Saye Recorded at PBS FM Studio’s, Melbourne, 22nd June 2017 Feedtime was formed in Sydney in the late 70’s. They’ve been described as “A blues-noise… equal parts abstract minimalism and working class roots-rock. Post-punk, yet right in the thick of it; miles ahead of the pack and not many seemed to notice.” (PBS FM 2017) The original line up released 4 albums on Aberrant Records in the US, UK and Europe as well as Australia throughout the 1980’s before splitting in 1989. The band reformed with a new drummer in the mid 90’s, this time releasing Billy through Amphetamine Reptile records and completed tours with The Damned and Unsane. The latter also appearing on a 7 inch split with feedtime in 1996. Apart from the odd reunion show, the band remained quiet for a long time before reforming their original line up to record Gas which was released via In The Red in 2017. Other Places: Engineered by Jeremy Smith Recorded at PBS FM Studio’s, Melbourne, 4th August 2018 Also the drummer of Melbourne based Taipan Tiger Girls, Mat Watson’s Other Places is his solo electronic project, an opportunity to delve into early 60’s exotic instrumental music, motorik rhythms, cosmic techno and synth heavy science fiction soundtracks. To date Watson has released 3 albums, self titled in 2011, Symbols in 2013 and 2017’s Lost In The Sea of Paradise, all through IT Records.
It’s time to go elbow deep into the old Duck Mayo Bucket and pull out some “Dis or ….PATs?!?” That’s right our good friend Pat sits in this week, as our Madcap Trio take a long hard look into such delicate matters as “What’s with the duct tape?”, and “Do i Really have to try all 3?”. We also taste test a trio of rather tenacious Brews from Occidental Brewing Company. So whether you choose Boxer or Briefs, or the Neutron Dance over the Safety Dance, there’s sure to be something for you. Alright smegheads, get yourselves strapped into stasis, as our very own First Technician Dave (not Lister) engages the Holly Hop Drive and launches us through his white hole of In The Red Dwarf Trivia! Our resident mixologists, the Scutters, were kind enough to concoct a cocktail to quaff upon (which they’ve imaginatively dubbed The Red Dwarf), as we reminisce on the BBC’s irreverent Sci-Fi sitcom cult classic (insert gratuitous genre-defining jargon here…). It's a brand new year, and to celebrate 2017, here's a brand new episode of Random Old Records Podcast! My new year's resolution is to get back to a regular schedule and release a new episode once a month, so hopefully I can stick to it! Doing this podcast is amazing fun, but it's only a hobby and I just don't have as much time to work on it as I would like. I'm also hoping to have more old episodes re-uploaded in the near future as well, so be on the lookout!Episode #57 is filled with the sounds of the times. Most of the hour contains raging, angry punk rock from the year 2016, including nihilistic statements of protest from bands like Violence Creeps, Mongoloid, Pure Disgust, Anxiety, and Watery Love. The punk of 2016 was more diverse and stylistically challenging than it has been in awhile. These songs clearly prove that the "music is going to get great again in the next four years" crowd just isn't paying close enough attention.60 straight minutes of bludgeoning rock n' roll can be a little monotonous, no matter how great it might be, so this episode contains a soft middle of bubblegum and country-rock that features a song from Hozac's crucial reissue of late-70s UK rockers Charlie 'Ungry, some cherry-picked compilation tracks, a super-catchy twangy obcurity by Swampwater, and a knockout hit from the Cowsills. Stream it or download it below, and as always, thanks for listening!Random Old Records Podcast #57Released 01/02/16 DOWNLOAD HERE1. Hey, folks! There was no episode of Random Old Records in October, truly sorry for the delay! I needed a little extra time to craft the perfect selection of tracks for this one. Episode #56 is a special 5-10-15-20 edition, which opens up the memory banks and goes back in time to the years 2011, 2006, 2001, and 1996. Looking back, none of these years were particularly "great" for music, but each one definitely has their fair share of jams!In 2011, Thee Oh Sees kicked off a remarkable run of albums with the acid-folk creep of Castlemania. Meanwhile, The Beets delivered their excellent final LP Let The Poison Out before leader Juan Wauters started a solo career. A decade prior, Jersey post-hardcore rockers Rye Coalition unleashed THEIR final LP Curses, which had been in major label limbo for two years prior to release, and further south, Texas punks the Marked Men released their classic Fix My Brain.2001 was the prime year for emo and post-hardcore, at least in my circle of friends at the time. Bands like Hey Mercedes and Hot Water Music were crafting anthems, while the remnants of Cap'n Jazz were crafting avant-fusion rock with Owls. Finally, the hour wraps up with a bunch of Britpop and indie rock from 1996, when both genres were in slight decline but still pumping out plenty of jams. In between the tracks are some vintage news stories to ramp up the nostalgia and complete the time capsule. Hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I had putting it together. As always, thanks for listening, and stay tuned for episode #57 next month!Random Old Records Podcast #56Released 11/07/16DOWNLOAD HERE1. If you follow Random Old Records on Facebook, you know that episode #48, the first new episode of Random Old Records Podcast in TWO YEARS, was posted to Soundcloud back in February. This isn't just a temporary thing. ROR IS BACK! Expect to see a brand new episode every second day of the month from here on out. The reasons I quit and came back are convoluted and not very exciting, so I'm not going to go into great detail. The main takeaway is that my podcast host Mevio went out of business two years ago and took down everything I had online, and it's taken me a long time to get the time to fix that mess the right way. Below this post you will see a box to subscribe to my brand new mailing list. Since the venues to freely advertise something like a podcast are drying up (lookin' at you, Facebook!), signing up to the ROR mailing list is the best way to keep up. The ONLY time you will get an email from me is when a new episode is posted. That's it! Put your email in, click Submit, and you'll be the first to know when (and where) the next episode drops! While I'm on the self-promotion kick, you will notice that there is a new "Podcast Archive" post below this one. This will contain links and info for past episodes of Random Old Records. I'm slowly going through my files and re-uploading everything, and this will keep track of the process. There are a bunch already posted, with more coming soon! Now that all the boring babble is finished, let's get to the JAMS! Random Old Records Podcast #49 features an hour's worth of killer tracks, The spotlight this time is bruising, heavy, noisy punk rock from the likes of Mystic Inane, Life Stinks, Cows, and Whatever Brains, plus the chillest of chill jams by Mac Demarco, Mild High Club, and Greg Ashley, and a bit of rare 70s rock n' roll from Morningstar and Sugluk! I've written dozens of these little blog posts hyping my latest podcast, so what more can I say at this point? RANDOM OLD RECORDS #47 has got the jams, an hour of them to be exact. It's got classics by Nada Surf, The Posies, and Teenage Fanclub. It's got brand new ones by Morgan Delt, Tony Molina, and California X. There's some of the most vital punk rock going these days from Life Stinks and Cheap Time. There's fuzzy, giddy powerpoppunkrock from First Base and Backseat Virgins. There's sleek synth jams from Minks and Gap Dream. There's some downright offensive commercials from 70s TV. There's also MUCH, MUCH MORE!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! Random Old Records Podcast is back from its summer vacation! Not gonna try to make up any crazy excuses, the truth is that I was running low on inspiration after 3+ years of blogging and doing a monthly podcast, and decided to put it to rest for awhile instead of cranking 'em out just to keep the streak going.Considering that it was four months in the making, EPISODE #43 of Random Old Records is a one hour MONSTER of fresh rock n' roll for your ears. It starts out with some ugly, noisy jams from Puffy Areolas and the K-Holes and crucial new punk rock from White Lung and Dikes Of Holland, hits the best tracks from the latest releases by The Fresh & Onlys, Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, and highlights some psych pop newcomers like The Marble Vanity and Jacco Gardner. This edition hits all the bases from the noisiest free-form freakouts to tight power pop and everything in between. It's simply a collection of the best shit I've heard all year, and I hope you all have as much fun listening to it as I did putting it together. Let's all have fun together!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! [12/2/2019 note: When I uploaded this episode eight years ago, it contained an audio error that cut off the last several seconds. It has bugged me ever since. So, I went back a couple weeks ago and completely remixed, remastered, and recreated the episode from scratch. I got married a month ago, and these songs were the soundtrack of my wife and I's first year together. They will remind me of that time forever, and I am glad the episode is finally complete.]2011 is almost over, and oh my goodness where did the time go?! The past twelve months were filled with all kinds of good things for me on the life front, and much like last year, there were SO MANY crucial rock n' roll records released and a bunch of killer shows that damaged my eardrums even further. EPISODE #38 of Random Old Records cuts away all of the extra padding and somewhat clever soundbytes and presents an hour of my personal favorite songs of 2011 with no interruptions! You'll hear all the songs I've been raving about since January, including heavy hitters like "Gold Sneakers" by Wax Idols, "Weekend" by Smith Westerns, and "Into Black" by Blouse. You'll hear heavy-duty psychedelic blowouts from The Paperhead, Thee Oh Sees, and The People's Temple, and perfect pop from Dum Dum Girls, Colleen Green, and The Babies. Hey folks, I've been on VACATION! Yeah, it's been a year now since I got a full-time grown-up job, so I finally decided to cash in and take a week of paid vacation. Lemme back up a bit and be honest. I didn't just go nuts and check out for awhile, I went nuts and impulsively bought tickets to the Friday night show of the Norton Records 25th anniversary celebration at the Bell House in Brooklyn! I just couldn't miss the Reigning Sound, Mark Sultan, the Great Gaylord, Jackie and The Cedrics, Mighty Hannibal, Andre Williams, and an all-star band led by Mick Collins on guitar. What a lineup! After a five day weekend in NYC that involved much record shopping (original pressings of the second New York Dolls LP AND PiL's Flowers Of Romance, YES!), a midnight show at the KILLER Spectacle Theater, a trip to Coney Island for a Nathan's Famous, and a few moments of clarity in a garden on top of a seventeen story building, I'm back and proud to present Random Old Records Podcast #37, which also happens to be the third anniversary show!Yep, I've been doing this podcast for a solid three years now and it might seem easy, but it can get hard as hell to scour the bins and blogs for a monthly hour of fresh jams sometimes. Luckily, the fall has coughed up a whole bunch of sizzling slabs that I can't stop spinning, and the springboard was a killer weeknight show at local dive The Comet, featuring Davila 666, Jacuzzi Boys, and Barreracudas. You'll hear a track from each band on this episode, kicking off with Davila's modern classic "El Lobo." Elsewhere, there's bubblegum-catchy glammy power pop punk junk from Italy's Giuda, Bare Wires, Video, and White Faces, another track from the AMAZING new Strange Boys LP (the best American rock n' roll band since the Replacements, for real), dark mysterious pop from Captured Tracks heroes Blouse and The Soft Moon, noisy Ramones worship from Terry Malts, noisy 90s slacker-rock worship from Heavy Times, and a whole helluva lot MORE!I know that I say it every time a new episode comes out, but seriously, THANK YOU for reading this blog and listening to the podcast! Whether you've been here since the beginning, or just found this site while searching for Mediafire links to the new Bad Sports LP or whatever and decided that REAL old school music writing still had merit in 2011, I'm glad you came along for the ride. Every time I think about quitting and settling into old age and complacency, my mind is blown by another bunch of kids with guitars and the cycle starts all over again. If going to the Norton bash taught me anything, it's that real, passionate rock n' roll still pokes through the cracks in this monolith of Internet cultural saturation every once in awhile, and it's no less vital than it was back in whatever time and place you decide is THE DAY. Hope you dig episode #37, and here's to three more years!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. So yeah, Random Old Records Podcast has been coming out like clockwork every second Wednesday of the month for like a year or so now, but my plans got derailed in the last few days. I had the playlist finalized on Sunday, then came home from work on Monday to find that my computer had taken a dump. LAME! After a couple hours of shopping online and several more hours of staring at progress bars, I had a brand new machine loaded with jams and cracked software and whatnot, so here's Random Old Records Podcast #34, approximately a day late and eight hundred dollars short. It's got roughly an hour of my favorite songs from the past month, and I'm hoping at least some of you faithful readers and listeners will enjoy them, too.Last month, I spoke a bit about being bored with new music, and judging by the stuff coming out lately, it seems like bands across the land are feeling the same way. My ears have gotten burned out by listening to nothing but lo-fi garage rock for awhile, and after hearing like fifty bands dealing in sounds of the sixties and seventies, the only logical place to go is the eighties. I just can't get down with all those sweater-vested weiners aping Talking Heads, but bands ripping off Depeche Mode, The Smiths, and The Cure get an immediate pass in my book. So this episode features a ton of classic tracks from the eighties by The Sound, The Comsat Angels, and Morrissey's band, along with songs by The Fresh And Onlys, Voxtrot, and Pernice Brothers that remind me of that post-punk time when bands slowed down and got all jangly and noisy and weird.Speaking of new music and old music, Captured Tracks has become my favorite label of the last few months. On this episode, you'll hear tunes from Soft Metals, Widowspeak, and Hoop Dreams, which bring back the sounds of the late eighties so perfectly that listening to their records might put you into a time warp. If you like dark dance, gothic country, or nervy college kid pop, then you're gonna love this stuff as much as I do. That Mike Sniper guy has a singular vision for his label that rivals Tony Wilson in his prime. Believe it!If you're a bit confused and are thinking "Well damn, I started listening to Random Old Records because it has a bunch of crazy garage rock n' roll jams every month" then I've got you covered, too. Random Old Records #34 finishes up with the best feral garage pop I've heard in the past month from the new Black Lips LP, The Happy Thoughts, Apache Dropout, and more! This one goes all over the place and back again, and I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I had putting it together!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. Summer, summer, summertime! I threw this one together at the last minute, but I think I did a pretty good job of capturing the mood of this lazy, hazy, hot July. Random Old Records Podcast #33 drifts by in a dreamy blur of psychedelic moods, shimmering reverb guitar, and loping dance beats, with a mix of new and old tracks. If you're one of those people who are melting in this punishing 100+ degree heatwave rocking the midwest, and just want to sit around in a dark room getting lifted all day, this is the podcast for you!Episode #33 kicks off with the all-time classic opening medley from the debut LP by The Soft Machine, a towering groove filled with stunning drums from Robert Wyatt, screeching organs, and slow-burning instrumental fury, and goes into some screaming garage psych from The Night Beats and Thee Oh Sees, then a Brit-psych style workout from The Paperhead, who put out one of the best LPs of the year on Trouble In Mind a few months back. I've been raving about them ever since, and now I'm SUPER-PUMPED that they're playing a free show at one of the best new venues in Cincinnati, MOTR Pub, on July 27th. If you're anywhere close, come check it out! Also, check out the perfect lo-fi 60s psych vibe of Jeffrey Novak on this episode of Random Old Records. He just so happens to be the producer of The Paperhead LP, and will be guesting on keyboards on their tour. Sweet deal!Elsewhere, you'll hear dreamy electronic-psych tracks from Washed Out, Hype Williams, and Black Moth Super Rainbow, and more chill jams from the likes of Pure X (AWESOME new LP), Seapony, Sic Alps, White Fence, Blouse, and Kelley Stoltz. There's classic tracks from The Kinks and Matching Mole, plus a few more surprises to round things out. Hopefully y'all dig it! There's some of my favorite songs of the year on this thing, so check it out and let me know what you think. So yeah, the air conditioning has been broken in my office at work all week long. Neat, huh? It's like eleventy billion degrees outside, so it's a perfect time to drop a brand new podcast of hot rock n' roll jams to sweat out the summer months with! Random Old Records EPISODE #32 features brand new tracks from Black Lips, Wax Museums, Ty Segall, and Cults, each from LPs that are sure to top the year-end lists. Ty Segall in particular has a stunner ready for all of you with Goodbye Bread, which thickens and slows down his bratty garage punk sound and brings the superficial Beatles and Nirvana influences of his past releases to the forefront in a way that will have mainstream rock critics blowing their stacks when they finally get around to checking it out.To be honest, I wasn't much of a Black Lips fan before, but the steady hand of super-producer Mark Ronson guides the band and polishes the shit out of their hooks and sound on the new Arabia Mountain. The blasts of bratty feedback and in-jokey murkiness of their previous releases has been replaced with huge gang choruses, sleazy saxophones, and more refined melodies than ever before. Random Old Records #32 includes "Raw Meat," which is a short and sweet Ramones homage that might be the best song they've ever recorded. Check it out! Also, you may notice some strange and different sounds on Random Old Records #32 that you haven't heard in previous episodes. For some reason, this new wave of dark and moody electronic rock has really been catching my ear in the past month or two, most notably the releases from Brooklyn's Captured Tracks label. On this episode, you'll hear a KILLER track from Portland's Blouse called "Into Black." These folks sound like they're trying to create a late 80s David Lynch movie credits theme with every track, and that's not really a bad thing in my book. You'll also hear darker Suicide-style tunes from The Soft Moon and Led Er Est that are on steady rotation around Random Old Records HQ.You'll also hear new hot blasts of rock n' roll from Wax Idols, The Hussy, Personal And The Pizzas, Brian Olive, Ramma Lamma, The People's Temple, Natural Child, Smith Westerns, Thee Oh Sees, and loads more! Oh wow, is it really May already? Well, according to the calendar it is, so here's EPISODE #31 of Random Old Records! April was an amazing month for rock n' roll, and I spent it buying a whole pile of records and getting my face melted off at live shows by the Black Lips, Vivian Girls, Ty Segall, The Fresh and Onlys, The Black Angels, Davila 666, Magic Jake and The Power Crystals, and YOWZA! Yeah, luckily a whole buncha sweet bands played around Cincinnati and got a fantastic turnout each time, so hopefully that bodes well for the summer and we'll be seeing even more coming soon!Anyway, Random Old Records #31 is loaded with an hour of new rock n' roll, including a BRAND NEW track from glam pop wizard King Tuff, fresh off a recent Scion A/V split single with the Hex Dispensers. It's called "Hands" and it sounds like a long lost Slade song. His upcoming LP is gonna be something else! The featured label this time around is Trouble In Mind, who should get some kinda award for putting out dozens of records without a single bad one in the bunch! This time around, you'll hear a track from each of their latest releases (Wrong Words, The Paperhead, Jeffrey Novak, and Alex Cuervo), plus Mean Jeans doing a TORRID Sparks cover from the TiM Record Store Day split 7"! That The Paperhead LP is freakin' amazing, by the way. It's a buncha 18 year old kids channeling vintage 60s psych pop through a 90s Elephant 6 lens and wrapping it all in a haze of youthful vigor and pie-eyed optimism. Looking out the window at a grey sky and pissing rain, I tried to invoke a few last rays of sunshine as the summer officially grinds to a halt. New tracks by Washed Out, who has been absolutely exploding across blogs, Pearl Harbour (following suit?), and Real Estate have been doing their damndest at squeezing the last dying breath out the summer. I kinda wonder if all this beach-y dream pop stuff that has been popping up like dandelions can keep coasting through until next year. Seems doubtful, though looking at the Mexican Summer release list for the next few months, which includes all 3 of the above mentioned artists, they're obviously hedging their bets that way. If it doesn't work out for 'em, at least '09 will be the year that summer crept into the 4 tracks of every bedroom savant in the land and spread rays of cheer across the blogosphere and into tape decks.Haven't checked 'em out yet, but this new-ish Vancouver band Indian Wars have been steadily getting some coverage, but outside of our own city, of course. Great stuff, I have to say. Nothing too new, but jangly, fuzzy, reverb laden garage pop with massive hooks will always perk up these ears. Coupla' shows coming up here in Vancouver, including a show on the 18th of September at some venue called The Enchanted Forest. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of this place should drop a comment below.Though some of his earlier work has left me wanting a little more, the new 2LP Dan Melchior Und Das Menace on S-S is jaw droppingly good. It's also pretty biting, with the most bite left over for a track dedicated to Williamsburg, NYC and the locust-like hipster invasion the NYC suburb has been dealing with lately. Anyways, this monster should satisfy those who loved last year's solid skewed garage-rock album Christmas For Crows.Played it on the show already, but once I heard Woven Bones has a new 12" coming in via Zoo Music, I had to play the excellent b-side off the already excellent Janie 7" from Needless Records. The Austin Texas native is on a flawless run right now, having released 3 dynamite 7"s on some of the best garage labels going right now (ie. Sweet Rot, Hozac and Needless). The 12", so I've been told, should be ready for the first week of October. You'll hear all about it here when it does drop.Speaking of having a flawless year, San Francisco's Fresh and Only's drop LP number 2 this week and it's easily as good, if not better, than their Castleface debut LP from earlier this year. The mp3's were sent my way a few weeks back, courtesy of Color Magazine, and though I don't listen to much music off my computer, this album has burned a hole in my hard drive. I'm not entirely sure how the group is able to peel off so many impossibly infectious songs (so far, the group have released 2 cassettes, 2 seven inches, 2 LPs and there is another LP on In The Red due year's end, aaaand another couple 7"s due by year's end as well. Oh, and don't forget about that Tim Cohen solo LP) but here's hoping they can keep running with it.Vancouver's Defektors are back in the city and they have a new cassettes available, featuring some covers and demos from the forthcoming LP due on Nominal sometime soon. Pretty limited run, so grab while you can...Thee Expressway has definitely shared the love for Belgium's Sloow Tapes here before, but now I've done it live on the air. Excerpts from the kraut-riddled Von Himmel, space-drone of Chicago's Drmwpn (featuring Steve Krakow of Plastic Crimewave/Galactic Zoo fame), and the ethereal forest-folk-psych of Im Jarhtal all got some airplay this week. Most of these cassettes play through as a whole, so only excerpts could be played. But, hopefully, it was enough to turn some people on to one of the best cassette outfits going.More local action: Ahna and Solars have just released a split 7", and, man, have these two put a lot of time into this package. Linocut sleeves and labels, spraypainted inner sleeves and an insert! Limited to 300 copies. Essential Vancouver power-drone/psych release. Any Canadian listeners/readers outside of Vancouver will have a ton of chances to catch Ahna as they embark on a lengthy cross-Canadian tour. Check below for those dates. The fine people at Vancouver's Ketchup Cavern passed along the test pressing for a forthcoming Robedoor 7", which should see the light of day in the next few weeks. Robedoor have been pretty quiet for most of 2009, but this new 7" see's the group stretching out a bit and amping things up. Their doom-drone vibe rooms intact but the group have added a pulse to it and come off with a bit of an Om vibe. Easily the most interesting stuff I've heard from the group (now a trio) in ages. You'll hear more about this one when it's finally ready to launch.Ketchup Cavern also has a brand new one-sided LP by Hamilton, Ontario's Fossils. Haven't had much time to sink my teeth into this one, but it should be ready for airplay for the next show.KC also have a new Sissy Spacek 7" due and two, count 'em TWO, full lengths by Aidan Baker. Keep 'em coming. In other Aidan Baker news, Nadja will be playing the Rickshaw Theatre on Saturday, October 3rd. Ahna and Empty Love both support. That one there is being presented by the skyrocketing Twee Death label and promotion group. Also in the works is a Blues Control show at Little Mountain on November 3rd, Wooden Shjips at the Anza club on Sunday, September 27, and Sic Alps with Magik Markers on Friday December 18th. All those bands will be playing Vancouver for the first time! Thanks for livening up this city a touch, Twee Death. Finally, ending the show in a typically noisy fashion, we have the brand new LP by Vancouver's The RITA, just recently released on RRR. I played the skate side, and rather than go into any details, I'll let the youtube video below do the 'splainin...Limited run on this one that, like all other RITA releases, this one will not last long. Not a whole lot of time to write up reviews this week, as I'm getting ready to head out to Summer Bummer in Portland this weekend (sneak preview on this week's show). If I can, however, recommend one record this week, it's gotta be the brand new one from Billy Bao. Even harsher and more relentless than their full length from two years back, "May '08" is a monster akin to the g(l)ory days of Brainbombs. Since Mattin of Billy Bao is anti-copyright, you should be able to find this one for download somewhere out there, but I do recommend you snatch the vinyl up for maximum aural punishment. That's it for this week. Full report on Summer Bummer when I get back.Show will be uploaded later this week.Cresting "Sashes" Waving Spades In The Air CDR EP (Fixture) 2009Kurt Vile "I Wanted Everything" Meet The Philly Elite 4-way split 7" (Kraak) 2009Woven Bones "Janie" Janie 7" (Needless) 2009Womankind "untitled" unreleased CDR 2009Pissed Jeans "Dream Smothers" King Of Jeans LP (Sub Pop) 2009B-Lines "Crazy Glue" Burnt CDs 7" (Nominal) 2009**Summer Bummer preview**Meth Teeth "Failures Selected By God" s/t CS (self-release/re-issued by Night People) 2008/2009Christmas Island "Morning Sunshine" split w/ Jonathan Reilly 7" (FDH) 2009Box Elders "Stay" Alice & Friends LP (Goner) 2009Ty Segall "Maria Stacks" split w/ Thee Oh Sees 7" (Castleface) 2009Timecopz "Barely Alive" unreleased mp3 2009Gestapo Khazi "Smoke Signals" s/t LP (Deadbeat Records) 2009The Intelligence "Boys Annoy" Boys Annoy 12" (In The Red) 2006*****Cold Cave "Cebe & Me" Love Comes Close LP (Heartworm) 2009Prurient "Earthworks/Buried In Secret" Pleasure Ground CD (Load) 2006Prurient/Cold Cave "Presomnal" Stars Explode CS (Hospital) 2009Billy Bao "untitled" May '08 LP (Parts Unknown) 2009AFCGT "Old Spy" Live April 24 2009 CDR (Fire Breathing Turtle) 2009Explorers "Side A excerpt" Bermuda Telepaths LP (Not Not Fun) 2009
