Thank you to Nuuly, both for sponsoring today's episode and for making it easier to get dressed during these hardest times of the year for CLOTHES (spring for Erica, summer for Claire, thanks for asking). Have we sold you on Nuuly yet? Use cases: trying out a bunch of jeans (or, gasp, shorts), dealing with wedding season, test-driving a bunch o' new looks without having to own them, navigating maternity and post-partum dressing…we could go on. And! Right now you can get $28 off your first month of Nuuly when you sign up with the code ATHINGORTWO Starting off with our pre-season preparation, we're curating a no-skips underwear drawer with help from Laura Reilly's newsletter (and Claire's love for the Natori Bliss Brief lives on!). We're also giving our shoes TLC at Leather Spa and getting a little post-winter warm-up with Tan-Luxe The Gradual, Tanning Water, and St. Tropez's Face Mist and Bronzing Mousse. Ok, onto clothing and accessories! Porselli x Alex Mill ballet flats and Chalo cowboy boots have been in Erica's rotation, and though she's already found jean shorts from Agolde (ahem, via Nuuly), she's looking for sporty shorts like Justin's. The barefoot shoe crowd got us curious about the Xero Genesis, we're going to The Consistency Project for jeans, and Claire is growing a jean shacket collection, intentional or not. To try to reinvigorate our excitement for getting dressed, we're reading Emilia Petrarca's piece on embracing glamour for Harper's Bazaar. Respect to Rebecca Jennings for naming the Big Baby trend. How do you get yourself more excited to get dressed up? Let us know at 833-632-5463, podcast@athingortwohq.com, @athingortwohq, or our Geneva. Change your clothes (monthly!) with Nuuly and get $28 off your first month when you sign up with the code ATHINGORTWO. YAY.

January 11, 2025 Running January 10th through the 25th at the Pumphouse Theatre in Calgary, Kyle reviews FRC's production of La Cage Aux Folles and considers it a faultless production we need more of. Tickets: https://www.artscommons.ca/whats-on/la-cage-aux-folles About the Show: This crowd-pleasing, rollicking and heartwarming musical about family, commitment, show biz and drag remains one of musical theatre's all-time biggest hits! After 20 years of partnered bliss, Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better or worse, get a bit of both when Georges' son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician. Further complicating the situation is the "family business": Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the star performer, "Zaza." Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as "normal" when he meets the family of the bride-to-be. But Albin has other plans, with hilarious results.

Composer Jerry Herman (Composer and lyricist; born July 10, 1931, in New York City) It only takes a moment to realize that Broadway's Golden Age is alive and well and thriving as long as Jerry Herman's around. "When they passed out talent," the legendary Carol Channing has said, "Jerry stood in line twice." Almost single-handedly, the creator of Milk and Honey, Hello, Dolly!, Mame, La Cage aux Folles and so much more has revitalized and nourished the all-American tradition of great and unstoppable show tunes. His music and lyrics have kept audiences tapping their feet, humming along, and wiping their eyes with tears of joy for generations. Even as often he's been underrated as being too easy to like in a world of dark and foreboding musicals, too entertaining, too tuneful and much too upbeat, the genius of Herman's deceptively simple songs cuts through any shortsighted criticism. "Jerry has succeeded so well in his mission that people don't give him credit," said Michael Feinstein, "because to be simple without being cliche is nearly impossible." Herman's genius, in truth, is not so much simple as it is subtle. For all his cock-eyed optimism-and very much in the tradition of his forefathers Rodgers and Hammerstein-a Herman musical always carries a message of timeless values, of humanity's triumph over hatred and ignorance, of happiness over despair. 1983's La Cage aux Folles, a smash hit on Broadway and a Tony Award winner in all three of its Broadway productions-and counting-is not only a bona fide crowd-pleaser but also the most sweetly radical musical of its age. Here on the Broadway stage, decades before the fight for marriage equality hit the headlines, was a pair of gay dads raising a family, and here was "...a man singing a love song to another man-I don't think that's ever been done in a Broadway musical before." Herman told The Washington Post that during previews in Boston "I didn't know whether or not they'd throw stones. The audience gave it an ovation." "By the time Georges and Albin-having weathered a son's passing ingratitude and a zealot's intolerance-walked hand in hand into the St. Tropez sunset, the audience was on its feet," The Washington Post reported. "What La Cage aux Folles celebrates, after all, is loyalty and love, respect for others and respect for self and, yes, even family. The good old values." Gerald Herman was born in New York in 1931 and raised in Jersey City. His parents Harry and Ruth ran a children's summer camp in the Catskills, where young Jerry surprised everyone by teaching himself the piano. Once, he recalled years later, "my parents took me at a tender age to see Annie Get Your Gun, and I was absolutely dazzled. I have one of those retentive ears, and when I came home I sat down at the piano and played about five of the songs. My mother was amazed." Many more would be amazed. At 17, he was introduced to Frank Loesser, who encouraged him to continue composing once he heard some of Herman's songs. He went to the University of Miami, joining its adventurous theater program and himself appearing in undergraduate shows including the musical Finian's Rainbow. His alma mater since then has honored this distinguished alumnus and today boasts the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre at the heart of its drama program. After graduation from Miami, Herman headed back to New York and put together a review of his songs so far: I Feel Wonderful opened at the Theatre de Lys in Greenwich Village October 18, 1954 and ran for 48 performances. He was just getting going. While playing piano in a New York jazz club called the Showplace, Herman brought together his friends Phyllis Newman and Charles Nelson Reilly for another review called Nightcap, which opened in 1958. This one ran for two years. In 1960 came Herman's Broadway debut, alongside material by Fred Ebb and Woody Allen, in the review From A to Z. That same year came Parade, also at the Showplace, starring Reilly and Dody Goodman. A hit, Parade moved to the Players' Theatre and it was during this run that a producer asked Herman if he would be interested in writing a musical about the founding of the state of Israel. Milk and Honey, starring Molly Picon as the ultimate Hadassah lady, opened in 1961. It earned Herman his first Tony nomination for Best Musical of 1962. He had arrived. It was David Merrick who brought together Herman and the first of his vulnerable but ultimately invincible heroines, Dolly Levi. Hello, Dolly! starring Carol Channing opened in 1964, ran for 2,844 performances, became Broadway's longest-running musical and has been revived often since. It swept the Tony Awards, taking home a then unmatched 10 including Best Musical and becoming one of the happiest episodes in the history of the Broadway musical. Mame followed in 1966, starring Angela Lansbury and teaching the world that in the toughest times "We Need a Little Christmas." What has followed amounts to a life-affirming body of work rivaled by few: Dear World, the underappreciated Mack Mabel, The Grand Tour, Mrs. Santa Claus, Jerry's Girls, and of course La Cage aux Folles. The theater world knew a good thing when it heard and saw it: Tonys, Drama Desk Awards, Theatre World Awards all followed, as did a 2009 Special Tony Award for Lifetime achievement, and a 2010 Drama Desk Special Award for "enchanting and dazzling audiences with his exuberant music and heartfelt lyrics for more than half a century." Right now in the 21st Century, we can be sure that someone, somewhere is singing a Jerry Herman song. That's one happy way we know the man's been right all along: the best of times is now.

“The whole experience isn't really supposed to be programmed. It's actually meant to get lost. And that has multiple meanings. It means to get lost in time. Like what era is it? Am I in the twenties, the thirties? This building has gone through a hundred years of history and we pick up on different decades at different parts in time in the property. We don't have clocks in the room, so it doesn't matter what time it is. It's Miami beach, you're on vacation. But more so than that, it's also to get lost on the street, wander, see what's around the corner.” We're in great company with David and Maya Berg, the husband and wife duo behind Esmé Miami Beach Hotel, where they are restoring the glory of the Spanish Village to its artistic heyday. With its Spanish-Mediterranean architecture, diverse Latin flavors and finishes, its original wonderment made modern, its appeal made timeless. Celebrating its 100-year history - once a colony for artists and outcasts, where the infamous Al Capone ran his underground gambling syndicate - now stands a chic hotel escape in the heart of South Beach, adorned in rich, nuanced, and eclectic treasures for guests to discover. In this episode, David and Maya divulge how Esmé is a ‘boutique gem hidden in plain sight' among hushed historic paseos, beckoning the old country's lust for life and the Mediterranean coast's deliciously slower pace. Top Takeaways [1:50] It was a New York City love story between a young David in real estate and a young Maya in hospitality, filled with long work days, late weekend nights, and summers spent in the Hamptons that started it all. [5:10] What makes Miami, “the next New York borough” according to the Berg's - from its international culinary finds to its multiple cultural flairs, from its livable neighborhoods to its vibrant arts scene. [8:40] David shares how real estate is all about relationships, and that is why the previous owner of the buildings that make up Esmé, cared so much about ensuring it ended up in good hands, that would do right by the neighborhood and continue on his dream for Española Way. [12:10] If the walls of this 100-year-old Spanish-Mediterranean revival landmark could talk it would tell tales of its ‘diamond in the rough' inspired name and its infamous residents such as Al Capone. [15:30] Beyond the beach, there's so much to do strolling the paseos, from window shopping to rooftop sunset watching, eating and imbibing all along the way. [22:00] With the creative eye of designer Jessica Schuster, Esmé returned to its former glory - with authenticity glowing in the ornate fireplaces and shining through the original skylights. [24:20] Local collaborations, rooftop classes, paseo popups and more are always in season at Esmé - just check out their Happenings to explore what excites you the most. [28:15] As a recipient of the inaugural MICHELIN Key, which recognizes the most outstanding hotels in the world, it's a testament to all those that make Esmé the ‘boutique gem hidden in plain sight' that it is today. Moment!
9ª Generación: “Taylor made”.

Welcome back. In today's episode, we're diving into the aromatic world of perfumes and discussing a pivotal shift that's happening within the fragrance space. As we have found throughout this season, the beauty industry is undergoing a transformative journey towards sustainability and conscious consumerism, and it's time for the perfume industry to catch up to that wave!Michelle Feeney is the founder of Floral Street, the sustainable, independent British fragrance brand. Having spent over 30 years in the beauty industry, at the helm of major brands like St. Tropez and MAC Cosmetics, Michelle founded Floral Street in 2017 after taking a 'gap year' aged 51. Floral Street has been turning the fragrance industry on its head since launching, using world-first coffee pulp packaging to house its fragrances via a 'cupcycling' scheme, and sustainable ingredients that are fully traceable from seed to scent.Subscribe to this podcast in all places where you listen to podcasts and drop us an email at info@sustainablyinfuenced.com, or follow us on Instagram and TikTok. Podcast With Sheila - (Sharing Uplifting & Impactful Real Life Stories)
SEASON 2 EPISODE 85 HOST: SHEILA GLAVEE GUEST: COLIN KINGSMILL Colin Kingsmill is an entrepreneur, coach and Founding Partner at Whole Human Coaching and a Strategic Advisor to Kaylo (www.kaylolife.com). He is currently authoring a book entitled “Fear Less: Crossing the Bridge from Fear to Bliss.” When people get stuck at critical transition points in their lives, he assists them in deconstructing the stories in their heads, overcoming fear, and reconstructing a new narrative to move forward, live their authentic selves and thrive. He has an acute ability to sense-make in this complex world. COLIN'S STORY I was born in Canada and raised between the Gulf Islands of British Columbia and the Swiss Alps in Switzerland. I have lived and worked (fallen and gotten back up again) globally, from Bora Bora and Beverly Hills to Montenegro & Serbia, London, Tuscany, the Indian Ocean, Thailand and everywhere in between. The first part of my career was in Swiss banking. I did it for 10 years; co-founding an investment firm, until I broke in 2001 after having ticked all the boxes of "success": MBA in Finance and Marketing, marriage, entrepreneurship. Christmas in St. Moritz and Easter in St. Tropez kind of stuff. You get the picture. In 2001 I gave everything I owned away (Buddha style) and moved back to Vancouver to start fresh. Literally, I began to redesign everything from scratch. I have spend the last 20 years in international sales & marketing, branding and communications. I have really seen it all, from flying in private jets, sailing on super yachts, and mingling with industry titans; meeting Hillary Clinton and Elton John and hanging out in George Clooney's villa on Lake Como when it was owned by the Heinz family. On the flip side of all the shiny stuff, I have also suffered the hardships of divorce and personal bankruptcy, depression and crippling anxiety. My whole adult life I have said "yes" to opportunities without knowing what was coming next or what the consequences might be. Now I am writing Fear Less: Crossing the Bridge from Fear to Bliss, 8 steps to fearless living bringing this tapestry of life experiences to serve others. Thanks to this vast collage of experiences, I have become an expert in helping people fearlessly pivot and make meaningful shifts in their lives when they find themselves stuck or at a daunting intersection professionally or personally. After spending the last twelve years living and working in Europe, now I reside in the peaceful seaside town of Mahone Bay in Nova Scotia, Atlantic Canada connected to nature where I can best serve my high-performing clients. „QUOI? PARDON? OUI, C‘EST SEHR LECKER! MAIS AUSSI TRÈS CHER! TEUER! YES! ET TRÈS BRUYANT ICI! ZU LAUT! WAS? TIKTOK? Es bleibt also Baywatch Berlin.
