She holds a Master's degree in Literacy and Language Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, and taught in public and alternative schools for 32 years before devoting herself full time, to Non-Violent Communication training. Nonviolent Communication, (NVC), is based on the principles of nonviolence– the natural state of compassion when no violence is present in the heart. NVC begins by assuming that we are all compassionate by nature and that violent strategies—whether verbal or physical—are learned behaviors taught and supported by the prevailing culture. NVC also assumes that we all share the same, basic human needs, and that all actions are a strategy to meet one or more of these needs. People who practice NVC have found greater authenticity in their communication, Increased understanding, deepening connection and conflict resolution. The NVC community is active in over 65 countries around the globe. BRADFORD C. BENNETT, PHDDr. Bennett's  formal somatic education began in 1985 when he began studying Tai Chi with Hubert H. Lui. For the next ten years Mr. Lui helped Dr. Bennett become both more relaxed and more biomechanically sound in movement.  He continued to explore methodologies to improve neuromuscular control and studied with several teachers including; Yochanon Rywerant, Ruthy Alon, Llana Rubenfeld, Charlotte Selver, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, Dean Juhan, Gaby Yaron, and Giora Pinkas. Following a knee injury a Feldenkrais teacher referred him to Thomas Hanna. One session with Dr. Hanna convinced Dr. Bennett that Dr. Hanna was doing something quite unique and in 1990 he participated in Dr. Hanna's first and only training in what he called Hanna Somatic Education. Dr. Bennett later became a Charter Member of the Association for Hanna Somatic Education®. In 1993 Dr. Bennett left his position at as a Senior Research Scientist at NASA Ames Research Center to focus on somatic education. He was soon recruited to teach at Sonoma State University and then San Francisco State University in the Dept. of Kinesiology. During these studies Dr. Bennett continued studying with H. H. Lui, combining his insights from the Western “somatic education” with his Tai Chi practice. In this episode we discuss:His background in SomaticsMeeting Thomas HannaHanna Somatic Training CourseSimilarities of Somatics & Tai chi ChuanIf you'd like to find out more about Brad's work and read his article "The Somatic Work of of Thomas Hanna, Tai Chi & Kinesiology" https://www.westeastsomatics.com

How can I cultivate and balance energy in my running, and in life? What is mindful running? What is the difference between Tai Chi, Qigong, and other martial arts? All these questions and much more are answered in this interview conducted between Tampa, Florida and Ponte de Lima, Portugal- shortly after our chance meeting while I was on pilgrimage along the "Camino de Santiago". For more about that, listen to upcoming and past episodes on the Camino! Dr. Larry Cammarata is a self-described "Chi Runner" and Mindful Movement Teacher, which means he applies the eastern traditional concepts of chi energy work to his running, notably techniques of relaxation and energy balance to injury-free running, developed by Danny and Katherine Dreyer. He knows eastern traditions of wellness, and is in fact an instructor of Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong, and has received advanced training in these arts, as well as being a practitioner over the past several decades. In our conversation, we discuss mindfulness practices and the joy of running in the classic methodology of Danny Dreyer, Chi Running, which is described as "a revolutionary approach to effortless, injury free running". Perhaps not completely effortless or now completely new, this method relaxes the body and allows the energy to flow in such a way that posture and mindful movement align, breathing is integrated with ease, and there is overall less stress on the body. "Mindfulness" has been used much more often in practical ways throughout society in recent years, and applied to many facets of life. Larry is on the peaceful edge of this work, and is encouraged by the movement to slow down and bring awareness to our daily practices, including running, something he fosters in his work and life. He and his wife Linda (RN, RYT) are a dynamic team who also happen to run mindfulness retreats exploring different cultures and places across the globe: www.mindfulnesstravels.com - In his work as a licensed psychologist who specializes in mindfulness-based therapy and education, he includes the science and practice of mindful movement! If you would like to know more about the above retreats or his ongoing travels and running adventures, Larry welcomes you to reach out through his own website, or link to all the methodologies and info we discuss at the Running Anthropologist blogsite: www.runninganthropologist.com You can also message or follow us @RunningAntropologist on Instagram and Facebook!
