Is Anybody Out There? The Quest For Life In Space It's one of humanity's biggest fundamental questions: “Is there life elsewhere in the universe?” But despite years of searching, it's a query that still has no answer. That conundrum also opens up a whole string of other inquiries, from how to best search for signs of life, to whether we'll be able to make sense of what we're seeing. The search for life elsewhere can also help us learn about our own existence. How many of what we consider the basic rules of life on earth are really just suggestions, or convenient accidents? A new book tackles these riddles through the lens of both science and science fiction. Science writer Jaime Green, author of the book, The Possibility of Life: Science, Imagination, and our Quest for Kinship in the Cosmos, joins Ira to talk about the science, history, and philosophy of our search for alien lifeforms, and takes questions from callers. The SciFri Book Club will be reading this book together in May—you can read along with us next month. Find everything you need to know on our May Book Club page. Farm Fertilizers Can Contain ‘Forever Chemicals' From Sewage The Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant is a pollution success story. Over the last several decades, it transformed Boston Harbor from a nationally embarrassing cesspool into a swimmable bay. The treatment plant takes everything the people of Greater Boston send down their sinks, toilets, showers and washing machines — plus industrial waste — and treats it. The treated water is clean enough to let out into the ocean. The remaining sludge gets recycled into fertilizer that's used in nearly 20 states. But now that fertilizer is raising fresh concerns. That's because wastewater treatment plants like Deer Island were not built to handle the toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS. The treatment process concentrates PFAS chemicals in the sludge, and therefore in the fertilizer, leading environmentalists and public health advocates to call for an immediate end to its use. Others are not sure that a full ban on sludge-based fertilizer, or “biosolids,” is the answer. But there is widespread agreement that we have only begun to grasp the extent of the problem. To read the full article, visit sciencefriday.com When AI And Dementia Intersect As AI becomes more advanced, it's also becoming a bigger part of our lives. That's especially true of smart speakers, which to some of us, act as another member of a family: answering simple questions, reminding us about appointments, and entertaining children. But what parts of our privacy are we giving up to make our lives slightly more convenient? That's the focus of a new play called “Smart,” which tells the story of four characters: a woman, her aging mother who has dementia, an AI programmer who works for a tech company, and a smart speaker named Jenny. Ira speaks with the writer of “Smart,” Mary Elizabeth Hamilton, about how she wrote the play, how the science behind AI inspired its plot, and the connections between AI hallucinations and dementia-induced hallucinations. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

If you were emperor or empress for a day, and you were blessed with superhuman -- but benevolent -- powers, what would you do to eradicate loneliness? In this, the final episode of "Is Anybody Out There?", listeners from around the United States and Europe shared their answers -- really big, bold ideas for instantly ridding the world of loneliness. These were a mix of magical, wistful, and even doable strategies, but all equally thought provoking and heartwarming in their ingenuity and scope. Most of all, it's clear that people are ready to talk about loneliness, openly and honestly, and to view it as a societal ill that needs to be addressed rather than an existential issue. Which is why, hosts Judy and Jeremy argue, that instead of thinking of loneliness simply as an evolutionary, unavoidable experience, we must face the possibility that it's partly a modern phenomenon, born of an ever-increasing individualistic society and economic and social conditions. Now is time for policy makers, institutions and society at large to do something about it.LinksJohann Hari "Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression – and the Unexpected Solutions" Dr. Sam EveringtonSocial PrescribingDaily HalohaRoland Griffiths, Johns HopkinsLook Up Movement 2020Medicare Costs for Treating Isolated Older AdultsDr. Vivek Murthy"Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World" Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Are we in the midst of a loneliness epidemic? Well, it depends who you ask. This week's guest, Dr. Mark Epstein, a therapist in New York City and a practicing Buddhist, believes that loneliness is simply one of life's everyday traumas. A ubiquitous human condition that doesn't only visit the unlucky but almost everyone, much like sadness, fear and even death. Dr. Epstein is also the author of a number of books that bridge Buddhist teachings with Western psychology. During his interview on this episode of "Is Anybody Out There?" he offers great insight into these two traditions, simultaneously quoting Donald Winnicott, a British child psychoanalyst, and the Buddha. In dealing with everyday traumas such as loneliness, he guides us away from quick fixes and instead, offers an alternative of mindfulness and self-reflection that's grounded in Buddhism. Through anecdotes, Buddhist fables and personal practices, he informs us that meditation encourages us to sit with these uncomfortable and unpleasant emotions in order to understand our feelings of incompleteness and to find solutions to help us navigate a way out. And when we do, we might even emerge more enlightened. Meditation and mindfulness, he believes, are ways for us to unlock the transformational potential of trauma because a hidden kindness often gets woken that we can apply towards ourselves and others who might need help.LinksMark EpsteinDonald WinnicottDhammapadaDaniel GolemanJoseph GoldsteinJack KornfieldRichard Alpert Sharon SalzbergMeditation and lonelinessGuest NotesMark Epstein MD is a psychiatrist and author of 8 books about the interface of Buddhism and psychotherapy, including Thoughts without a Thinker, Going to Pieces without Falling Apart, Psychotherapy without the Self, The Trauma of Everyday Life, Advice Not Given: A Guide to Getting Over Yourself, and the forthcoming The Zen of Therapy: Uncovering a Hidden Kindness in Life to be published in January 2022 by Penguin Press. Understanding loneliness was the first step in trying to figure out its solutions. So, hosts Judy D'Mello and Jeremy Warshaw pondered these questions: Is there a universally accepted definition for loneliness? Is loneliness an emotional or physical pain? Can you feel it in your mind, your body or both? What's the tipping point at which feeling a bit lonely turns into into a chronic condition? Can you measure loneliness neurologically? Can you identify where it occurs in the brain? The duo decided they needed expert help and turned to Dr. Fay Bound Alberti, a cultural historian and the author of "The Biography of Loneliness," for her expertise and knowledge of this incredibly complex human emotion.Dr. Alberti takes us on an enlightening journey, from the provenance of the word "loneliness," to the emergence of mind sciences, to Hollywood's version of loneliness, and to a future where we we might be able to pop a loneliness pill. She also speaks about her personal encounters with this often painful issue, and offers people who are not suffering from chronic loneliness, some practical advice. Her techniques include meditating, taking a warm bath, or doing something creative like doodling or writing -- all ways to re-engage the senses and re-gain that feeling of belonging in the world. Talking Through Is Anybody Out There? Kyle, Mark and I talk through Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 8, which is titled, Is Anybody Out There? This was written by co-executive producer Michael Alaimo, and directed by Michael E. Satrazemis. We have a very important announcement! After five years, we decided that we were ready to strike out on our own, and as a result, we are leaving the Golden Spiral Media network. We would like to thank Darrell for the opportunity to podcast with GSM over the last five years, and thank him for allowing us to take our podcasts with us. Going forward, the podcasts that we do will be a part of our new network, which is called Talk Through Media, and will consist of the following podcasts: The Walking Dead Talk Through and Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, hosted by Mark, Kyle (Fear only) and me;The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, hosted by Ruthie and me;A new podcast, The Star Trek: Picard Cast, hosted by Ruthie and me, coming soon! And… more podcasts to come! We are excited to start our new endeavor, and we hope to have everything set up by the time we return in three weeks for the FTWD mid-season premiere! Talking Through Still Standing On this episode 58 of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, Brian, Kyle and Mark talk through Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 7, which is titled, Still Standing. This was written by co-producer Richard Naing, and directed by Marta Cunningham. Marta Cunningham is notable because we think she is the first director to also direct Star Trek: Discovery, which is the other show Brian podcasts about. We have more feedback for last week’s episode… S5E7 coverage starts at 30:37… Before we get into this week’s episode, we have to share more feedback we received for last week’s episode, S5E6 The Little Prince, and Kyle tells us what he thought of the episode. Discussion on this week’s episode starts at 30 minutes and 37 seconds into the podcast. Not as many people disliked this episode, but it’s still not a favorite! Most people think this episode was better than last week, but it’s no masterpiece. The character moments are really good, but there are some points in this episode that are handwaved over. How did Strand and Charlie move the balloon? How did it become arranged in such a way to make a wall? How did they move the propellers? How are they continuing to put the plane together when it seems there’s no one actually working on it? How did they suddenly become airplane mechanics? How we don’t see June and Al repel up the mountain? It has some flaws, but if you don’t nitpick too much, it’s still an enjoyable story. Ratings went to an all-time low for the show this week… For the second week in a row, FTWD ratings sunk to a new low in the 18-49 demographic and ratings. S5E6 The Little Prince got a 0.34 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.393 million viewers, down from the last week‘s 0.42 and 1.488 million viewers. Unfortunately, this is an all-time low in ratings and viewers for the show. Again, there was no Talking Dead this week so no ratings for it, but it returns next week. That’s it for Still Standing! Still Standing wasn’t a spectacular episode, but we liked it well enough. In “Is Anybody Out There” I’m attempting to address a question from a listener who wanted to know what being a home-based entrepreneur / writer/ speaker is like. The Pros & the Cons. When I made the decision to give up corporate life, being alone was perhaps one of the hardest things to get used to. I was prepared for the rigours of running my own business (not really, some days I’m still not), but I wasn’t aware of how much time I would have to spend by myself. Alone. Note: No new episode next week! Ben is on vacation and we decided we wanted to be too. :P Tune in the week after that for Is Anybody Out There! === Good news for rubbernecks: this episode is a slow-motion train wreck, a veritable cavalcade of characters making baffling decisions and generally acting like total dicks. Do we like it anyway? Of course we do, because we're absolute sheep for Code Lyoko. I'm just saying, this time we came awfully close to only liking it ironically. ===== Questions? Comments?
