This episode was originally published on April 14, 2020 Craig, Ryan, and Megan reunite remotely for the next installment of their Lord of the Rings series of podcasts. Up today, Book 4, or the latter half of The Two Towers. In these ten chapters, we follow Frodo, Sam, and Gollum through the Emyn Muil, the Dead Marshes, Ithilien, and Shelob's Lair. The panelists will discuss the split nature of the narrative, Sam's place in the reader's experience, and why Gollum's final betrayal is possibly Tolkien's best writing in all of The Lord of the Rings. "... modest, fair-minded and scrupulously just, and very merciful"... I am sure I did not invent him. I did not even want him, though I like him". Tolkien on Faramir Faramir emerges suddenly from the shadows of Ithilien towards the latter part of The Two Towers. We've never before heard of him by name, have had no warning of his presence running up to this moment and in some ways... he serves little narrative purpose. Or does he? In this episode, we explore Faramir as an expression of unconscious energy itself. A bridge between worlds. The steward of an ancestry that encompasses the promised strength of the world of men. And though it is Aragorn who returns to the throne of that world, it is Faramir who steps aside to place him there. Perhaps stepping aside for what is good and just is the strongest thing any of us can do. "For myself, I would see the White Tree in flower again in the courts of the kings, and the Silver Crown return, and Minas Tirith in peace."
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) Part 14: Henneth Annun Book Analysis Manu (@ManuclearBomb) and Emily (@JRRTweetien) are Token Tolkien for an entire episode, here with the rangers of Ithilien. Faramir puts his hostages, Frodo and Sam, to question about their journey and their secret purpose, so far from their homes in The Shire. Faramir reveals himself to be a shrewd operator and sharp orator, and Sam, dear Sam, is as loyal to his master as ever. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) Part 13: Henneth Annun Manu (@ManuclearBomb) and Emily (@JRRTweetien) are led blindfolded into the guerilla outpost in Ithilien, the Window on the West. Faramir, Captain of Gondor, speaks to the doom of Men coming on two fronts before speaking to the two Hobbits, whose fates will govern the doom of Men. Meanwhile, Gollum goes fishing in a nearby, totally legal-to-fish-out-of pool of water, which brings him to a head with Faramir and Frodo! --- Become a Patron of My Brother, My Captain, My Podcast My Brother, My Captain, My Podcast Reference Guide My Brother, My Captain, My Podcast on Twitter My Brother, My Captain, My Podcast on Instagram Manu's Twitter Emily's Twitter

The Two Towers' landscape passages… a lot of the book is from Sam's POV, and he's the gardener, and Ithilien is packed with flower names in a way that not even the Shire is when he's not the viewpoint character. So there's so much lore that he clearly is collecting as he goes. Which I think is so beautiful.Jared Pechaček is a writer and artist whose recent work includes illustrating the acclaimed horror novel Red X by David Demchuk. Welcome to another episode of Tolkien with Friends where we finish up the Two Towers movie but leave several chapters on the table to be explored during Return of the King. This week, we finally get to see what happens in “Helm's Deep,” plus the chapters “The Window on the West” and “The Forbidden Pool.” Technically, we also see half a second from “The Road to Isengard” and “Journey to the Cross-roads,” but we'll cover those more next time.In this episode:Andie talks through how she might change the Two Towers movie, given the chanceWe (read: Ahnna) learn(s) how Faramir finds out about the One RingWe also cover how Gimli saves Eomer at Helm's Deep, the different types of Men, and much more!
Not Another F**king Elf: A Lord of the Rings Character Guide
Shieldmaiden of the Mark, White Lady of Rohan, Lady of Ithilien - and certainly not a dry-nurse. In episode nine of in-depth Lord of the Rings character guide Not Another F**king Elf, we're saluting Eowyn, aka Dernhelm, hero of the Battle of Pelennor Fields. Every week in this podcast, Paul Ridd and Catherine Bray look at a character's place in Tolkien's mythos, their place in pop culture, literature and adaptations. We look at Peter Jackson's adaptations, Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings (1978), the 1979 Mind's Eye radio adaptation, Return of the King (1980) from Rankin-Bass, the 1981 BBC Radio adaptation, and the 1990 Rob Inglis and 2020 Andy Serkis audiobooks.
Frodo and Sam have passed the Dead Marshes with the help of Sméagol, went to the Black Gate of Mordor and found it impassable, decided on an alternate route, and coincidentally ran into men of Gondor, the captain being Boromir's brother Faramir who succeeded in what Boromir failed. Thanks for sticking with us as today we tackle the final five chapters and finish The Two Towers in it's entirety by covering The Forbidden Pool through The Choices of Master Samwise. Keep up as we stay with Frodo & Sam as they receive the blessing of Faramir to leave the temporary safety of Ithilien with Sméagol and continue their journey, view the evil city of Minas Morgul where the King of the Wraiths resides with an army set for war, climb along the secret pass to a tunnel, fall into a trap, fight for their lives against an ancient evil, and Sam having to make seemingly impossible choices. With Chase & Josh providing the major takeaways from each chapter, notating key full circles and foreshadows, pointing out a potential plot hole, coming up with our own draft of who each of us would take in a Fellowship re-do of who goes on the journey from Rivendell, and debating some fun scenarios, don't miss out! "He spun round, and rushed wildly up the path, calling and calling his master's name. He was too late. So far Gollum's plot had succeeded."
Sam awakens from his nap (honestly, the guy can sleep anywhere) to find Frodo standing before the Rangers of Ithilien, as if on trial. Faramir presses the witness for information about his quest, but the conversation keeps coming back to Boromir as Sam listens in steadily rising anger at the implications being made towards his master. We see what happens when a hobbit gardener gets his fill of “sauce”, discuss Faramir's quality (not for the last time), and learn just how special the wild Kine of Araw really are… but are their horns actually that loud?
With Gollum missing in action, Frodo and Sam get ready to flee from whoever is making the mysterious bird-calls. Soon they're trapped by tall men with tall spears and tall bows, and explaining themselves is going to be a tall order. But before the hobbits can give the Rangers of Ithilien a full account of who they are, what they're doing, and whether they know anything about the skinny, toothless guy in the area fishing without a license, a skirmish begins with a passing regiment of Haradrim. All this, plus Sam reflects poignantly over the body of a fallen foe.
In a 1944 letter to his son, J.R.R. Tolkien shared his surprise at the sudden entrance of Faramir: "I am sure I did not invent him, I did not even want him, though I like him, but there he came walking into the woods of Ithilien." In part four of the Wade Center Podcast's series on The Lord of the Rings, Drs. Crystal and David C. Downing, along with Producer Aaron M. Hill, uncover numerous allusions, motifs, and deeper meanings as they retrace the lonely and tragic steps of two little hobbits, Frodo and Samwise Gamgee, and their slippery guide, Gollum (or Smeagol) in The Two Towers.
The debate has raged for years: what are the two towers of the title? Is it Orthanc and Barad Dûr? Maybe Orthanc and Cirith Ungol? Perhaps Faramir’s base in Ithilien is in the running? In this week’s episode we’ll finally...barely address it. Registration for both virtual and in-person tickets are officially open on https://signumuniversity.org/mythmoot/ In which we discuss the “Orc Problem.” Boromir and Elrond face off concerning the bravery of men and elves. Boromir then takes a poke at Aragorn’s role in the coming strife, and whatever mysterious errands the Rangers of Ithilien are doing. Aragorn makes a point that there are more than one front to this war. Field Trip: Wells of Langflood “Deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised.” ~J.R.R. Tolkien
The Field of Cormallen -- The narrative returns to Gandalf and those outside the Black Gate. To the north, the Captains of the West founder on the hills outside the Gate, surrounded by a dark, rolling sea of Orcs and Wild Men. Gandalf stands proudly, white and calm, with no shadow falling upon him. Suddenly, a great cry rises up: “The Eagles are coming!” Out of the north arrives a company of great eagles, led by Gwaihir the Windlord. The will of Sauron falters, and all the armies of Mordor quail in terror. A great roar shakes the hills. Gandalf cries in victory that the Ring-bearer has completed his quest, and that the reign of Sauron has ended. As Gandalf speaks, a huge shadow rises in the south, extending across the sky like a giant hand, and then vanishes in the wind with a great rush. Aragorn leads the Captains in a great sweep over the plains. Gandalf then soars into Mordor on the back of Gwaihir. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam, still in the heart of Mordor, have given up all hope of survival. As they talk quietly below the ruin of Mount Doom, Gwaihir spots them. Two eagles sweep down and lift the hobbits into the air. When Sam wakes, he finds himself on a soft bed in Ithilien, the eastern lands of Gondor. He first comments on the extraordinary dream he has just had and then cries out in astonishment that his dream actually happened. Frodo sleeps next to Sam, and Gandalf watches over the two of them. The wizard says that a great Shadow has departed, asks the hobbits to dress in their worn and ragged attire, and escorts them out of the wood. They are to attend a reception hosted by the King of Gondor. A great throng of people awaits the hobbits. At their emergence, the crowd bursts into thunderous applause, singing songs in praise of the hobbits. Frodo and Sam approach a great throne, where Aragorn welcomes them. He lifts them and sets them on the throne, and the joy of the people flows over them like a warm wind. In a regal ceremony, Frodo bequeaths his knife Sting to Sam, who initially resists but finally accepts the gift. That evening, Frodo and Sam attend a generous feast. They reunite with their old companions. Sam is greatly surprised by Pippin, who seems to have grown several inches. The next morning, King Aragorn prepares to enter the great city of Gondor as its rightful ruler.

The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater. — The Fellowship of the RingOne of the threads woven throughout all of Tolkien’s writing is grief… so many of the tales of Middle-earth are steeped in sorrow. And so today, I hope it’s alright, I wanted to talk about love and grief, sorrow and joy, and the way they are at one in Eucatastrophe. We see this paradox most plainly in the lives of the elves. They are the most beautiful of the children of Iluvatar, their goodness and strength are unmatched. But because of their immortality, they have lived through many lifetimes of men. They have seen the best and the worst…Galadriel says to Frodo in Book II, chapter 7, that she has spent many ages fighting the “long defeat” as she calls it.“the long defeat”, a phrase Tolkien also uses in Letter 195:“Actually I am a Christian, and indeed a Roman Catholic, so that I do not expect ‘history’ to be anything but a ‘long defeat’ –though it contains (and in a legend may contain more clearly and movingly) some samples or glimpses of final victory.” - Tolkien, Letter 195Within the lifetime of the Elves, they have seen the world as it grows dim. In both a figurative and literal sense. Arda at first was lit by the two lamps, which were knocked down by Melkor, and then the two trees of Valinor, which were destroyed by Melkor and Ungoliant, and then at last the sun and the moon were made. So even just in this sense, the light within the world has diminished…And so too within all the battles throughout all the ages, the Elves have seen as evil has slowly seeped into every corner of the earth. The long defeat. And yet, the Elves sing. They are often merry and joyful. They throw the most amazing parties! They are filled with so much goodness and peace despite their sorrow. In Book I, Chapter IV, Sam says “They are quite different from what I expected –so old and young, and so gay and sad, as it were.’This kind of paradox of joy mingled with sorrow, I think, is at the heart of The Lord of the Rings. Especially within the tale’s endings.Tolkien cared so deeply for this concept that he coined the term Eucatasteophe: “the sudden happy turn in a story which pierces you with a joy that brings tears…” - Letter 89Later in the same letter he wrote:“The resurrection was the greatest ‘eucatastrophe’ possible in the greatest Fairy Story –and produces that essential emotion: Christian joy which produces tears because it is qualitatively so like sorrow, because it comes from those places where Joy and Sorrow are at one, reconciled, as selfishness and altruism are lost in Love. “Throughout all of The Lord of the Rings we expedience small moments of Eucatastrophe, when all Hope seems lost for Frodo in the Barrow-Downs and Tom Bombadil Busts In to save them, when Merry and Éowyn face the Witch king of Angmar and destroy him, when the battle seems lost but Hope is rekindled… at the Crack of Doom when Frodo betrays his quest and claims the Ring as his own, but Providence provides another way for it to be accomplished. But there’s one scene in particular that just stays with me.We see this mingling of joy and grief within a character that feels so much more familiar, someone I see myself in more than the Elves: Samwise Gamgee. At the end of the War of the Ring, in Return is the King — The Field of CormallenWhen Sam awakens in Ithilien, he and Frodo have survived their quest, he sees Gandalf before them and asks “is everything sad going to come untrue?”I’ve found so much comfort in that phrase, and often paired it with Revelation 21:5 “And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”Later in this chapter, they are all gathered together in celebration —“ And all the host laughed and wept, and in the midst of their merriment and tears the clear voice of the minstrel rose like silver and gold, and all men were hushed. And he sang to them, now in the elven-tongue, now in the speech of the West, until their hearts, wounded with sweet words, overflowed, and their joy was like swords, and they passed in thought out to regions where pain and delight flow together and tears are the very wine of blessedness.”The topic of grief has weighed heavily on my heart over the past few weeks.January is a difficult month for me, as It marks the anniversary of our miscarriage. I found out I was pregnant on January 9, 2015 only to find out on January 14th that I was losing the baby. Within that span of five days, I experienced so much joy as I fell so hard in love with this little baby, mingled with so much grief as I realized I would never get to hold him or her, to really know them at all.And even in all of the grief and wondering what things would have been life, even four years later, there is also a sense of peace that I cling to in knowing that our little baby is held so safely in the arms of Jesus.I found this quote in Letter 45 and I wanted to share it with you all:There is a place called ‘heaven’ where the good here unfinished is completed; and where the stories unwritten, and the hopes unfulfilled, are continued. We may laugh together yet...” - Letter 45, from 1941In sorrow we must go, but not in despair. Behold! we are not bound for ever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory. Farewell!” - Return of the King, Appendix BIs everything sad going to come untrue? Behold, I am making all things new…
Sometimes you need a card to round out your deck. Is this the card for you?
In our third installment of the Stewards of Gondor, we get to the family interactions between Denethor, Boromir, and Faramir. It’s all about leadership style, oddly enough. Dan shares some of his military experience, and Erica mispronounces Imladris several times. Enjoy! :15 Why is Denethor unhappy with Faramir? :25 Faramir enjoyed Big G’s visits. :43 Faramir is kind of the nerdy brother, Boromir is kind of the jock. 1:03 Denethor needs warriors so he’s annoyed with Gandalf. 1:19 Soldiers love Boromir and the people love Faramir. 1:30 Now both of his kids are following Gandalf, 1:50 It’s kind of Denethor’s fault that Boromir is in the fellowship. He didn’t want Faramir to go. He told them about Imladris and where their questions would be answered. It’s not really his fault, but Erica enjoys blaming him for it. 2:00 Faramir was having recurring prophetic dreams, he talked to his brother. Boromir had the dream once. 2:33 They asked their dad what to do. Faramir wants to check out the dream. 3:13 Boromir was a stronger fighter and it was a long, dangerous journey. 3:30 Denethor didn’t really want either of them to go because of the war. 3:44 Boromir thought Faramir wouldn’t make it so he took it upon himself to go. 3:58 He also left Faramir with a chance to prove his worth to Denethor. When Boromir left, Faramir took over Osgiliath for a while. 4:13 Soldiers liked Faramir for a different reason than they liked Boromir. 4:30 Dan’s military experiences. 5:04 Boromir is out in front, he’s a powerful fighter. 5:54 Faramir needs to explain why and how. He humanizes his troops. 6:27 There are pluses and minuses to each style. 6:39 Faramir would probably need to convince another leader why his idea is good. 6:54 He needs to know his soldiers better than Boromir, what motivates them. 7:02 This is why Faramir is good Ithilien. 7:13 If Faramir’s guys have a problem, they’ll tell him. Boromir probably wouldn't care. 8:26 Denethor respects one leadership style more than the other. 9:03 That’s one reason he doesn’t want Boromir to go. 9:27 Boromir wants to take the journey on himself to save his brother the danger and give him the opportunity to prove himself to Denethor. 9:50 There’s no real rivalry except what Denethor put there. 9:58 It’s Faramir that finds Boromir in the boat (elf boat, not dwarf boat). 10:43 Denethor’s son that he understands is gone. 10:53 Faramir is loved for reasons that Denethor can’t understand. 10:58 He doesn’t like that Faramir is a “wizard’s pupil”. 11:09 Denethor using the palantir is like Boromir fighting orcs. It’s risky and brash. References: All music is by the amazing Doctor Turtle! Feel free to show him some love over on Bandcamp. In this continuation of our conversation about the stewards of Gondor, we talk about Denethor using the palantír, Sauron using the palantír, and the different military situations in Osgiliath and Ithilien. Episode Timeline 1:00 Where did he get a palantír anyway? 1:20 Fëanor. Kind of the worst IMHO. 1:45 Elendil took 3 palantíri to the north kingdom. One is with Círdan in the Grey Havens, one at 2:25 Amon Sûl (Weathertop), one at Annûminias (capital of the north kingdom). Isildur and Anárion each had 2. One at Minas Ithil (Minas Morgul), one at Osgiliath, one at Orthanc, and one at Minas Anor (Minas Tirith). 3:11 Wormtongue throws one at Gandalf. 3:35 Pippin and Aragorn both look into it. 4:07 Effort of will. - How palantír work. 4:19 Belle’s mirror 4:48 Point your palantír in the direction you want to look! 5:20 Palantír stuff is in Unfinished Tales. 5:45 Mental effort to focus: UT p 403 6:13 Light-related stuff with Fëanor. 6:30 Stewards mostly didn’t use it. 6:44 Sauron used his powers of fear and domination to pull the gaze of the other palantír. 7:09 Sauron turned Saruman through a palantír, but not Denethor. Saruman wasn’t being controlled by Sauron, but he wasn’t very helpful. 7:50 Saruman was trying to play both sides and failed. 8:15 Denethor could use his palantír by right, but it wasn’t a very good idea. 8:28 Technically, they all belong to Aragorn, but the stewards held power in place of the kings so the right to use it belonged to Denethor as well. 9:28 Some of the people of Minas Tirith were Nûmenórian, but not all Gondorians are. The line of Eӓrendil is part elvish, but not all Nûmenórians were descendants of Eӓrendil. 10:17 Denethor was using the palantír to get the information he needed to fight the war. 10:44 He continued to use it even though it was a huge mental strain and aged him prematurely. 11:05 Sauron was drawing palantír to him but Denethor could turn it away. That’s a huge deal. 11:20 Denethor was taking really big risks because he needed the information. This was the only way to do it, even though he knew it could destroy him. 11:30 Dan talks a little about how military intelligence works. Tolkien would have known about that and it was a subtle and interesting way to use that knowledge in the book. 13:20 Scene of Denethor eating is SO AWFUL and UNCOMFORTABLE. It’s supposed to be. 14:10 Shoutout to Billy Boyd. Wow! 14:55 Denethor had ONE JOB! 15:28 Hey Aragorn, what have you done lately? 15:50 He was hiding up north while Denethor was risking himself using the palantír and sending his sons to die. 17:03 In Rohan (Norse) the aristocracy earned honor in battle, so they were out in the front of battle. Gondorian culture is different. 17:50 Aragorn is out in front, like at the Black Gate where he’s all later, haters! 18:57 In Osgiliath, it’s whatever fight you can make it. 19:10 Boromir is a cavalier, Faramir is a ranger. Ithilien requires stealth. 19:34 Gondor CIA? 20:00 The brief geography of Mordor/Osgiliath/Gondor. 20:57 Erica doesn’t want to get into the Kinstrife right now. Maybe another time! Our protagonists are in the Moon country of Ithilien, which becomes clearer in this chapter than ever before. The Moon indeed seems to be playing a vital role, and these paragraphs abound in lunar imagery. This week we are joined by Rev. Greg Farrand. Greg leads us through his own style of lectio divina as […]

"The long journey from Rivendell had brought them far south of their own land, but not until now in this more sheltered region had the hobbits felt the change of clime. Here Spring was already busy about them: fronds pierced moss and mould, larches were green-fingered, small flowers opening in the turf, birds were singing. Ithilien, the garden of Gondor now desolate kept still a dishevelled dryad loveliness." There is a vital aspect of gaming in Middle-earth that is often overlooked: Middle-earth itself. The terrain upon our playing surfaces can change the course of a battle dramatically, and those with the ability to best utilise it are at a distinct advantage. Join Jeremy and Kylie as they discuss the rules of terrain, the ways in which it can affect your games, and how to set up a board to make it come alive.
