Norwegian vocalist Gaahl is a man who we deeply admire...his work with Gorgoroth and Trelldom, in particular, has a special place in the blackest ventricles of our hearts. Same, too, for his band Gaahls Wyrd, In our initial listens to the band's freshly-released (as of this writing and recording) Braiding the Stories album, we find ourselves facing one of the greatest post=black metal Norweird offerings in a decade. We are particularly excited by final song "Flowing Starlight," which we dissect here for your enlightenment and/or amusement. Note I: The Radical Research Patreon page is ready for your patronage. Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast with a new album review, talking about the Nashville based black metal act Obsidian Shrine. This is the band's 3rd full-length studio album titled Dereliction of Divinity. For some reason, my mind went to that Incantation song "A Once Holy Throne" when I saw the song title "A Vacant Throne" but the two tracks sound nothing alike. Obsidian Shrine is a band who is heavily influenced by Marduk. Marduk was never a stand out to me personally as I feel like other talents in the Norwegian trve kvlt black metal scene have overshadowed them in terms of quality song writing. However, Murmur and Nazgul seem to have a way of making their guitar riffs pop as if they just know exactly how to harness the best elements from 2nd wave black metal like Gorgoroth and Dark Throne but give it a clean studio mix. Since I just blabbed on and on for filler sake, I'll remind you that this first track is called "A Vacant Throne" and if the former album is anything to go by, this one is loud, aggressive and in your face with the screeching banshees for vocals. They keep the raspy screams coming throughout the duration of not just this nearly 6 minute opening but the remaining 5 tracks as well. "A Vacant Throne" begins with the sound of howling wind before the early era Naglfar-esq riff and opening scream rips your face off. The drum work is speedy and unrelenting and the vocals are angry. Not to mention there is a brief but very sweet face melting guitar solo loaded with sweep picking. Next we have the song "Licentious Procession" which brings more vocals that sound even more venomous and you can really feel the seething hatred within the very few words you can actually pick out on the first handful of listens. The main rhythm guitar has a more memorable riff this time around but it's here where I must point out my first critique. I don't hear the bass at all in this music. I'm unsure if the Inquisition approach was intentional but this music could certainly benefit from having the 4 string turned up a little. "Obsolete Ideology" is the third track where this issue continued and in all honesty, it's not a track that I particularly remembered after my first listen but it later grew on me just a little. Still not my favorite track on this new record but it's still a blistering banger nonetheless. "Evil Has Its Day" is my favorite song on this album. As someone who thoroughly enjoys the melodic subgenre the most, it was refreshing to finally hear an undistorted guitar moment where the blast beats finally take a break. The blissfully sinister part comes with the nasally ghoul-like vocal break. Key components like this are what makes me pay the most attention. I wish there were more breaks on this album where different vocal styles or musical compositions come into play. I love the calming guitar riff just after the goblin vocals finish rolling its R's. It's short lived but still a great moment. The 5th track serves as a simple instrumental with long notes and a metronome drumbeat. Its meant to be an intermission or rather a prelude to the final song. Throughout we hear a loud mouthed TVangelist preacher fear mongering to all of his gullible followers. It leads nicely into the final song which happens to be the album title track. "Dereliction of Divinity" kicks off with black metal sound but after the first minute, we get a tempo change that slows to a grinding riff but the vocals stay the same. I'm glad the riff stays like this before the very Kerry King style guitar solo shreds in a quick and chaotic way. It's unfortunate that seconds later, this short album concludes very abruptly. There's no winding down or fading out. It just kinda ... stops. Dereliction of Divinity is an album I strongly recommend to fans of bands like: 1349, Taake, Watain or Sargeist. I'll give my boys a fair score of 6.66/10 rating.

Here are those episodes: - Episode 175: Writing sex scenes- Episode 190: A panel on neurodiversity and creativityTowards the beginning of this episode, Fable mentions a post that Kate had on Instagram about the male friendships in this series. That post can be found here. In this conversation, we reference several different quotes from the LOTR books. They are:Sam: “His thought turned to the Ring, but there was no comfort there, only dread and danger. No sooner had he come in sight of Mount Doom, burning far away, than he was aware of a change in his burden. As it drew near the great furnaces where, in the deeps of time, it had been shaped and forged, the Ring's power grew, and it became more fell, untameable except by some mighty will. As Sam stood there, even though the Ring was not on him but hanging by its chain about his neck, he felt himself enlarged, as if he were robed in a huge distorted shadow of himself, a vast and ominous threat halted upon the walls of Mordor. He felt that he had from now on only two choices: to forbear the Ring, though it would torment him; or to claim it, and challenge the Power that sat in its dark hold beyond the valley of shadows. Already the Ring tempted him, gnawing at his will and reason. Wild fantasies arose in his mind; and he saw Samwise the Strong, Hero of the Age, striding with a flaming sword across the darkened land, and armies flocking to his call as he marched to the overthrow of Barad-dur. And then all the clouds rolled away, and the white sun shone, and at his command the vale of Gorgoroth became a garden of flowers and trees and brought forth fruit. He had only to put on the Ring and claim it for his own, and all this could be. In that hour of trial it was his love of his master that helped most to hold him firm; but also deep down in him lived still unconquered his plain hobbit-sense: he knew in the core of his heart that he was not large enough to bear such a burden, even if such visions were not a mere cheat to betray him. The one small garden of a free gardener was all his need and due, not a garden swollen to a realm; his own hands to use, not the hands of others to command. 'And anyway all these notions are only a trick, he said to himself.”― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the KingFrodo: 'It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill Gollum when he had the chance.'Gandalf: 'Pity? It's a pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play in it, for good or evil, before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.' Frodo: 'I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.'Gandalf: 'So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides that of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring, in which case you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.”― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring“A time may come soon," said he, "when none will return. Then there will be need of valour without renown, for none shall remember the deeds that are done in the last defence of your homes. Yet the deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised."She answered: "All your words are but to say: you are a woman, and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honour, you have leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more. But I am of the House of Eorl and not a serving-woman. I can ride and wield blade, and I do not fear either pain or death.""What do you fear, lady?" he asked."A cage," she said. "To stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire.”― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the KingWe also referenced several movie clips from the films in this conversation. They are:- LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring - The Death of Boromir- Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) - I Am No Man Scene | Movieclips- LOTR The Two Towers - Gollum and SméagolTowards the end of this episode, the Verbivore references a funny conversation between the actors who played Merry (Dominic and Pippin (Billy Boyd) on their podcast where they talk about lines where they'd put a cuss word into the LOTR films - including the “Fool of a Took” scene in Moria. Album Review - Helvegr (Tsjuder)

The Great Metal Debate Podcast

Welcome back metal heads to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. It's Xander once again with another album review. Today I will be looking at the Gr1m and kvlt Norwegian black metal band called ... Tiss-juder? Nah, I'm just joking. The bands name is pronounced like "Shoo-der" And this is their 6th full-length studio album titled Helvegr. This kreig outing was released on June 23rd through Season of Mist records. I feel like the best way to describe this band would be like what would happen if a raw black metal band or to receive a good studio mixing from a professional sound engineer. I was first introduced to this band way back in 2015 when someone recommended that I check out their 2004 album Desert Northern Hell. Later on I got my hands on a copy of their 2002 record Demonic Possession. A few months ago while I was working one of the football games at my job, I wanted to tune out the fucking annoying college marching band so I started blaring the Kill For Satan album in my noise canceling ear buds. To be honest, I have never been fully blown away by this band musically but enjoyed the very raspy vocals. To me they are the closest to Pest era Gorgoroth that we're going to get despite the less desirable production. Tsjuder has always been a stand out among all the others in the genre because they don't sound like their music was recorded with a potato or an old Nokia phone that you can play Snake on. If you're new to this band, most of the black metal elitists would point you in the direction of their older material but I on the other hand would strongly suggest introducing potential new fans to this album. I feel like showing the younger generation the raw side of this band might be a turn off but this album manages to keep the raw feel while still having some standout guitar riffs. A great example of this would be the hit new track titled "Prestehammeren". Another one would be for their song "Gods of Black Blood" and it even has a nice corny music video to go with it. Sometimes cheesy black metal videos work and other times they don't, in this case it does. It has everything you could ever want in a black metal music video from: burning inverted crosses, to skulls to the band members carrying torches and screaming into the camera in full corpse paint. "Iron Beast" is a great way to begin this record but "Surtr" is one of my favorites. If we're being completely honest, this album is good at maintaining its prowess but at the same time it also lacks a lot of pizzazz. There isn't a whole lot of standout moments throughout this record but if you enjoy this particular style of black metal then I see their more loyal fans get a kick out of it. I could do more for this review like give shout outs to the band members or try to pronounce some of their foreign song titles, but I just don't see any real reason for me to put more effort into this. Again, this is a good album but at the same time it's not something that I want to rattle on and on about. In conclusion, I don't mean to be so lukewarm about a band that I like but I'm not going to give this a higher rating than a 7 out of 10. If you want to support them, you can get yourself a nice little patch for your battle vest like I did for mine, or you can buy their merch from their Bandcamp page.

From the depths of Scandanavia comes the crimes of the black metal community. Norwegian band Wardruna creates music born of Nordic history, Norse runes and nature - and is led by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Einar Selvik, who composed music for the TV series Vikings. (He was formerly the drummer in the black metal band Gorgoroth under stage name Kvitrafn, for those keeping track.)  Hear a captivating combination of old and recreated Norse historical instruments: Tagelharpa (bowed harp-lyre), birchbark lure (a trumpet), goat horns, Kraviklyra, instruments from nature: stones, bones, trees, fire and ice, along with sounds captured in nature, vocal techniques of many kinds, and ancient poetry. The 2018 record, Runaljod – Ragnarok, is the third of a trilogy of musical interpretations of each of the twenty-four old Nordic runes (the word rune can also mean magical song). Wardruna performs some of their unusual, spiritual, ancient sounding-modern ritual music in-studio. (From the Archives, 2018.)  -Caryn Havlik Set list: "Wunjo," "Isa," "Helvegen" Watch "Helvegen":

Black metal developed from heavy and extreme metal in the late 80's and early 90's and is characterized by distorted instruments, guttural or shrieking vocals, lyrics focused on death and destruction and featuring satanic and/or nordic mythological symbolism. The most defining thing about the scene though were the anti-christian, or anti-religious views. Many bands originated from Scandinavia, and especially from Norway where an almost cult-like music scene developed with bands such as Mayhem, Gorgoroth and Darkthrone. A suicide, two murders and arson. The common denominator? Varg Vikernes, stage name "Count Grishnakh" or simply "The count", bassist of the band Mayhem. This was the result of the purification of the black metal scene where everyone - fans and band members alike - had to prove their dedication. https://www.angelfire.com/vi/ofme0/black.htmlhttp://www.diva-portal.se/smash/get/diva2:1110373/FULLTEXT01.pdfWikipedia P3 radio documentary “The black metal murders” aired in 2017https://missmephistopheles.com/2019/12/10/euronymous-and-varg-vikernes/Fampeople.comMurderpedia.orgLoudwire.comhttps://metalinjection.net/shocking-revelations/burzums-varg-vikernes-details-his-french-arrest-in-odd-new-blog-posts “Lords of chaos:The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground”,  Didrik Søderlind and Michael Moynihan from 1997Documentary "Pure Fucking Mayhem" from 2008Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=Q3XBAHLSS3WU2)

Christian goes dark into the metal world again, this time with author Jon Wiederhorn, who has a new book called, Raising Hell: Backstage Tales from the Lives of Metal Legends. From the author of the celebrated classic Louder Than Hell comes an oral history of the badass Heavy Metal lifestyle―the debauchery, demolition, and headbanging dedication―featuring metalhead musicians from Black Sabbath and Judas Priest to Twisted Sister and Quiet Riot to Disturbed, Megadeth, Throwdown and more.In his song “You Can't Kill Rock and Roll” Ozzy Osbourne sings, “Rock and roll is my religion and my law.” This is the mantra of the metal legends who populate Raising Hell―artists from Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slipknot, Slayer, and Lamb of God to Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Disturbed, Megadeth, and many more! It's also the guiding principle for underground voices like Misery Index, Gorgoroth, Municipal Waste, and Throwdown.Through the decades, the metal scene has been populated by colorful individuals who have thwarted convention and lived by their own rules. For many, vice has been virtue, and the opportunity to record albums and tour has been an invitation to push boundaries and blow the lid off a Pandora's box of riotous experiences: thievery, vandalism, hedonism, the occult, stage mishaps, mosh pit atrocities, and general insanity. To the figures in this book, metal is a means of banding together to stick a big middle finger to a society that had already decided they didn't belong. Whether they were oddballs who didn't fit in or angry kids from troubled backgrounds, metal gave them a sense of identity.Drawing from 150-plus first-hand interviews with vocalists, guitarists, bassists, keyboardists, and drummers, music journalist Jon Wiederhorn offers this collection of wild shenanigans from metal's heaviest and most iconic acts―the parties, the tours, the mosh pits, the rage, the joy, the sex, the drugs . . . the heavy metal life!Horns up Diggers! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1635766494/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0https://www.harpercollins.com/author/cr-105673/jon-wiederhorn/
