This week, we look back at a time when Hollywood used to make original movies, rather than remaking or sequelizing everything under the sun! Get this: a Christmas-hating, greedy misanthrope is haunted by three ghosts until he learns to love humankind again! Crazy, right? Hollywood, take note! The Rock (1996) Episode 166: Show Notes. Hello everyone and thank you for joining us for another episode of Your Inner Child Is An Idiot podcast, a show diving into the nostalgic memories of pop culture from our childhoods. When you hear ‘The Rock' most people will think of the wrestler, but we are not talking about that rock; we are talking about the 90s hit film about an escape from Alcatraz Prison. It starred Nicholas Cage as the no-holds-barred hero, the legend Sean Connery, and Ed Harris as the perplexing villain. In this episode, we don't hold back and talk about the plot of the movie, why the love interest has no impact on the plot, the problems with Nicholas Cage's character, what the best lines in the movie are, the role of female characters in the film, why some of the movie's plot does not make sense, and why the car chase scene is good and bad at the same time. Tune in today for another hilarious episode as we unpack one of the cheesiest movies in history to find out if your inner child is an idiot, with your hosts, Damon Xanthopoulos and DJ Phillips! Key Points From This Episode: Introduction to today's topic and discussion about Sausalito cookies. We find out how Damon feels about the actor Ed Harris. A breakdown and recap of the plot of the movie The Rock. What people first think of when you mention Michael Bay. A discussion about the confusing plot of the hero's love interest. We attempt to pin down the exact character traits of the hero, Stanley Goodspeed. Why the pregnancy test in the movie is in a little glass vial. The problem with Nicholas Cage's character: too good, too soon. What the roles of female characters are in typical Michael Bay movies. A rundown of the cast and what other movies they have acted in. We discuss Ed Harris's character and why it is so cheesy. Damon points out how rain does not work properly in the movie. We unpack the plot twists regarding Ed Harris's character. The point where we lost our patience with the movie. Why Damon cannot sympathize with Ed Harris's character. One of the craziest scenes in the movie: the car chase scene. Find out some of the best lines in the movie. Reasons why the ‘rocket man' scene is so ridiculous. We close the show by hearing Damon and DJ's verdicts on the movie. Tweetables: “I usually think of Transformers. I think I didn't realize this was him. But this might be the platonic form of a Michael Bay movie. I'm not going to declare that, but I'm going to put that forward as a possibility.” — @yiciai DJPhillips [0:16:28] “Yeah. He plays that James Bond-ish character very well and he does it with aplomb in this movie. But Nicolas Cage is so all over the place that I don't know what I'm supposed to think about him.” — @yiciai @damonxanth [0:27:20] “It's not just like he changes over the course of the movie. It's literally from sentence to sentence. It's completely different. It makes me miss his characterization in Con Air, if that tells you anything.” — @yiciai DJPhillips [0:28:36] “It's a really dumb plan and I feel aggrieved that the movie wants me to sympathize with Ed Harris, even though he's doing reprehensible things.” — @yiciai @damonxanth [0:46:24] “This is a very stupid car chase. Please let the record show that I believe that. I really enjoyed this car chase. It was very dumb. But I don't know if I've ever seen a car chase that makes me think.” — @yiciai @damonxanth [0:49:54] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: YICIAI YICIAI on Facebook YICIAI on Twitter YICIAI Email - yourinnerchildisanidiot@gmail.com Voicemail or Text YICIAI: (615) 576-0525 The Rock (1996) Find us at all the finest podcast places: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/yourinnerchildisanidiot Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/dj-phillips/your-inner-child-is-an-idiot Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/your-inner-child-is-an-idiot/id957660267 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4BHABEvxH02VSCkhvKX2HQ?si=NHxzzArHSxGnxFUvTEpbNQ Mentions: Thank you to our Patrons for welcoming us to The Rock: Heather Tuggle, Jonathon Day, Damon's Australian Accent, Particle Man, Dan McIntyre, The Hands of Fate, Jackson Has An Unhealthy Obsession With Damon, The Elusive Fan Gromkin, Shit on the Cartouche!, Josh Frigo, Dramatically Placed Hot Dog, Travis Vance, Hizoner the Mayor, Beth Surmont, David Mort, The Supreme Ruler of This Podcast, Just Cuz, Scalfasaurus, Dr. Malcolm's Heaving Bosom, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, T. Today on Obsessed Show I'm honored to be chatting with John Flansburgh, ½ of the dynamic duo that is They Might Be Giants. As you can only imagine my response when I received the email… “Hey, this is John F. from TMBG, and we'd like to share our Book with you in hopes that we can figure out a chat on your podcast.” Well spoiler alert, I was pretty excited to make that happen. Of course I said yes! Like I, many of you may know them from songs such as Istanbul (Not Constantinople), I Palindrome I, Particle Man, Birdhouse in your Soul, or even the theme song to Malcolm in the Middle… but today we're talking to John about their latest project. Their new book & album, which is fittingly entitled, “BOOK,” is a collaboration between the band, past Obsessed Show guest and Designer Paul Sahre, and photographer Brian Karlsson. I was lucky enough to get a preview copy a few days ago, and as I understand, this is only one of two copies of this gorgeous book that exists… so far! I'm excited to learn more about John, the book, and They Might be Giants. So without further ado, here's my conversation with John Flansburgh.
Hey friends! You are in for an absolute treat of a show today! The delightful and brilliant Kate Bowler sits down with me to talk all about how to move forward with life when it's not really what you would have picked out for yourself. Kate is a New York Times best-selling author, podcast host, and associate professor of the history of Christianity in North America at Duke University. And she's one of my very favorite humans. She shares her story of being diagnosed with Stage IV cancer at a young age, what she learned during her cancer journey, how she really feels about the phrase “living your best life now,” and what we can do when unexpected changes in life turn our carefully laid plans upside down. Listen in to hear about: What happens when we distract ourselves from that muted ache that comes with just being a person What we sacrifice when we say we're going to live in the present only What the Bible says about the human experiences, especially suffering What happens when we ignore our fragility in exchange for “living our best lives now” In this episode I answer this question: I recently parted ways with my best friend of 10 years, how do I grieve someone who is not actually dead? (45:09) Great things we discussed: 1. Particle Man 2. Friday Night Lights 3. Raising a Rare Girl 4. Vivino 5. The Ordinary Facial Mask 6. Standing Strong Hope you loved this episode! Be sure to subscribe in iTunes and slap some stars on a review! :) xo, Alli www.alliworthington.com/katebowler2/

With this being a finale, we both expected and hoped for the biggest and most delicious plate of nachos that we have been served so far, and we were not disappointed! Join Chris and Darrell (Debris Division partners) as we share what the Nachos had to say about “Celestial Body” - the stellar and absolutely phenomenal bombshell of a season finale of Debris! We heard from a few new Nachos but also heard from many of our regulars, and that list includes Cory, Matty, Brian the Christmas Guy from New Hampsha, Bastien, Geoff (xforce11), Anne, Barb, Cheryl B, Patty from Canadia, Sarge, John (TheSilverVox), TVasTherapy, Bradley, Elyse, Jeremiah, Emily (The Soggy Nacho), Brian (Zeppelin Driver), David, and Kome! We also heard from a few of you via our social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook, and you all had such exciting and insightful things to say about this finale, with many of you excited by John Noble’s appearance (as we were) and speculating about questions such as who Particle Man (first name Particle, last name Man) might be and what the heck we were looking at in that shocking closing scene. Be sure to keep in touch and stay connected with us because even though the first season of Debris is over, we do still have a bonus episode planned for you in the near future! Read More... Words cannot express how much we loved this epic and climactic season finale of Debris, but in over two hours, we certainly try! The finale brings us a beautiful balance between answering some questions from over the course of the first season while also asking us new ones and setting the stage for the second season, including a new character named Otto played by none other than an old friend from our Fringe days, the legendary John Noble! We discuss George’s heartbreaking betrayal, speculate about who or what the mysterious Particle Man might be and what Brill and Dakheya are up to with an apparent Finola doppelganger trapped in suspentia, share our excitement over seeing John Noble appear, and so much more! This was an incredible and gratifying season finale experience for us and can’t wait to hear your thoughts about it! If you want your thoughts to be featured on the podcast or if you’d just like to hit us up to chat about Debris, then be sure to reach out to us via one of our various contact methods! Read More... Holy crap, it's another massive episode about a classic tune, Flood's Twisting. Jeff Takacs settles in with me for this adventure with a song that may be in competition with Istanbul and Particle Man for having the most variations on its live performance over the years. We also have a great variety of covers to share, and the episode kicks off with a fantastic mailbag with a bunch of voicemails about the Thunderbird Nina episode, and the Art Patreon episode.
The debate has raged for years: what are the two towers of the title? Is it Orthanc and Barad Dûr? Maybe Orthanc and Cirith Ungol? Perhaps Faramir’s base in Ithilien is in the running? 'Twas a long time ago, longer now than it seems, in a place that perhaps you've seen in your dreams...Bowery Ballroom in New York City, the night of February 8, 2020! It was on the Bowery when Jordan, Dave, and incredibly special guests, nighttime ladies Kristen (Jordan's girlfriend) and Krissy (Dave's wife) all saw a They Might Be Giants Flood 30th anniversary concert and lived to tell the tale! Join us after the show for a secret shadow government meeting in the empty back room of a diner just up the highway as us women and men discuss the show (with CLIPS!!!), the lovely lasses' history with the music of TMBG, and how much tip to leave the disaffected waitress. We marvel at startlingly different live versions of songs like Older, Particle Man, Why Does The Sun Shine and Turn Around, plus The Quiet Storm acoustic set, and the entire Flood album! Krissy tells a surreal story about We Want A Rock, Kristen reveals her most played and least fav TMBG tunes, and Jordan and Dave exchange tense looks from across the table! Spoiler Alert for those who are planning to see their current live show! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dontletsstart/support

Then we're doing the things a podcaster can as we take on Particle Man, discuss the possible and possibly impossible inspirations for the song, its astonishing popularity and longevity in TMBG's career, and Particle Man and Istanbul's appearance on the short-lived but much remembered Tiny Toons Music Television network! Then Jordan and Dave crank up their Marshall stacks and rock out to Twisting, while Jordan shares a personal rock story about Young Fresh Fellows and teenage heartbreak and -- it's not important. Each week, Joey, Nathan and Kelly revisit an episode of Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Pinky and the Brain, or Freakazoid! Today, your hosts talk about another of Kelly's favorite episodes of Tiny Toon Adventures entitled "Tiny Toons Music Television." The three talk about each segment in today's episode and then give the episode a water tower rating! Tiny Toons Music Television Throughout today's episode Buster and Babs introduce each segment as the resident VJs of Tiny Toons Music Television. They show us a wall of phones, we meet Julie Bruin, and we get to see the one and only Fuddonna! Istanbul (Not Constantinople) In the first segment of Tiny Toons Music Television, Plucky is sent on a mission to rescue a jade duck statue that looks a lot like Plucky himself. He sets out with Hamton to steal the statue back from Montana Max and his goons only to be chased back through the desert on camels. Unfortunately Plucky breaks the statue as soon as he gets his reward (or his reward gets him.) This video is sung by the band They Might Be Giants but they weren't the first ones to sing it! The hosts discuss their favorite moments in the cartoon and in this song. Particle Man Plucky is Particle Man and he is in the wresting ring going up against Triangle Man, Universe Man and even the Crusher when he changes outfits from Particle Man to Person Man. Plucky tries to face off against the three foes but he doesn't stand a chance. This second song from They Might Be Giants features some great action and animation. The hosts reflect on this cartoon and on their shared love of They Might Be Giants. Respect Babs is singing to Aretha Franklin's classic hit "Respect" in a library, a court room, a funeral and an operating room! The ones she bothers however get back at her so that they can be respected. This cartoon has lots of writers and animators in the background! Plus a cameo from Batman (sorta.) Money (That's What I Want) Montana Max sings about money and how much he wants it. In the end though, he has nothing and Joey actually feels sorry for him. This video has lots of energy, great animation and Ralph the Guard? Top Secret Apprentice In this instrumental salute to "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," Bugs Bunny is working on the new computer animation wing of ACME Looniversity. While he's away, Buster jumps onto the controls but quickly falls asleep. Buster dreams of flying through space, swimming through the ocean, flying on flies and going into the past to the age of dinosaurs. Buster's imagination almost gets out of hand! This instrumental segment of Tiny Toons Music Television features impressive animation, great action and an awkward ending that the hosts don't really like. Join the Party! It's the magical conman from Liverpool, John Constantine! Anthony & Doc discuss this Sting lookalike and why he has so few friends. Plus hear the worst attempt at a Scouse accent you've ever heard! SHOW NOTES: Intro Shoutout to Freudian Sips – mother-daughter duo have drinks and talk about brains, psychology, and all manner of interesting topics (NSFW) (2:32) Background (5:37) John Constantine created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben in The Saga of Swamp Thing #37 (June 1985) Originally designed by the artists to look like Sting, since they were fans of the Police Started off as a DC character, but shifted to Vertigo in 1993, where he essentially stayed for over 20 years until the New 52 combined the DC and Vertigo universes In the Vertigo universe, he ages in real time, unlike most comic book characters Born as a sole surviving twin – he inadvertently strangled his twin in the womb with his own umbilical cord – the birth also killed his mother, and his father resented him for her death Discovered he is the latest in a long family line of mages known as Laughing Magicians Ran away from home after messing up a curse on his father that left him frail Moved to London in 1969, got involved with the occult, and started a punk rock band called Mucous Membrane Also in a relationship with Zatanna Zatara, although it was revealed that he was bisexual His first act of heroism - in an attempt to save a young girl, he summoned a demon, but did so incorrectly, and it took the girl to hell – the demon, Negral, became one of his recurring antagonists Later met Swamp Thing, and helped teach him to become more powerful – one of John’s longest friends A chain smoker, he contracted lung cancer – tricked one demon into drinking holy water, then sold his soul to another demon – rather than fight over it, the demons agree to cure him of his cancer Later blackmails God to keep his soul out of Hell, because if he goes to Hell he will take over, release the demons and not care about what happens Tries and fails to save his sister’s soul from Hell – demons get one over on him New 52 – some small changes to backstory, but personality remains essentially the same Gets transported to Earth-2, where he cooperates with that world’s version of himself until it’s revealed that one of them has to die in order to save Earth-2 – he kills the native Earth-2 version, but tricks Darkseid and manages to save a large number of survivors Issues (20:44) Difficulty keeping close relationships of any kind with people – most people are kept at a distance Adrenaline addiction to dangerous and mysterious situations – also a nicotine addict (29:33) Has magic ability, but often chooses not to use it unless he has to (36:29) Treatment (44:53) In universe Out of universe Skit (54:50) Ending (61:12) References: "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" by They Might Be Giants - Anthony - 0:43 Tiny Toons music video for "Particle Man" by They Might Be Giants - Anthony - 0:57 Constantine film - Anthony - 3:47 Mighty Peking Man - Anthony - 5:20 Matt Ryan (actor) - Anthony - 5:48 Matt Ryan (quarterback) - Anthony - 5:50 "Don't Stand So Close to Me" by the Police - Anthony - 6:44 Synchronicity by the Police - Anthony - 6:51 "Venus of the Hardsell" by Mucous Membrance - Anthony - 10:15 Best Friends Forever - South Park - Anthony - 15:06 J. Denne uges playliste er spækket med scratch og ugens interview er med en sand battle dj legende. Vi besøgte rapperen Son Of Sun i Melomani studiet i Nordvest kvarteret i København. Flood is my Beatles on Sullivan, my self-titled Velvet Underground record and Run-DMC on MTV. It was the first time I remember being keenly aware that an ever-expanding musical universe existed beyond the confines of the rock and Motown the radio played on the way to and from soccer practice. It was a strange and idiosyncratic world of misplaced accordions, horn-rimmed glasses and lyrics that only began to take on some semblance of meaning after repeat listens. So I listened, over and over again on the cassette tape a friend had record on, the mystery only deepened by the lack of official art work. I was in college by the time I realized I’d been getting key lyric to “Particle Man” wrong all these years—singing it at full volume in a car full of people who knew better. The sense of discovery is inextricably linked to the They Might Be Giants experience. It’s a tie that bonds so many of my generation, discovering in those days just before the mainstream adoption of the internet that maybe we weren’t so weird after all — or, perhaps more appropriately, that there were other weirdos out there just like us. Dial-A-Song is the most literal manifestation of the phenomenon, an old answering machine purchase by the band to get its music out into the world as John Linnell healed from a broken wrist and Flansburgh recovered from an apartment robbery. The duo advertised a phone number in the back of the Village Voice readers could call to hear the band’s songs. The band resurrected the project this year, through the decidedly less intimate medium of YouTube, with the ambitious goal of releasing a new song each week for the full calendar year. In this 100th episode, we discuss Dial-A-Song, the importance of partnerships and the role of discovery in art.
“Particle Man”, Charles Bukowski, Heidegger’s tool-analysis, Atari, Ace of Cakes, aliens, tiny ontology, Bruno Latour, ontography, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, the Bossa-Nova, Scribblenauts, Ben Marcus, “What is it like to be a bat?”, carpentry, cyborg homes, sugar granules, and The Wire. What you’ve just read (assuming that you’ve gotten here via the list above) is a very particular form of knowledge-making. It is a list, a catalogue, a community of things. It is also a kind of travelogue, a “Latour litany” that maps some of the objects populating Ian Bogost‘s beautifully written and wonderfully stimulating new book, Alien Phenomenology, or What It’s Like to Be a Thing (University of Minnesota Press, 2012). Opening with a piece of a They Might Be Giants song and ending with a part of a poem by Charles Bukowski, Bogost’s book introduces readers to the field of object-oriented ontology by asking us to consider a fundamental question: why do we ignore “stuff” in scholarship, poetry, science, or business as anything more than a way to continue talking about humans? Is there a way to think and live with stuff in the world that doesn’t reduce it to that which concerns people, but instead considers and lives with it on its own terms? Alien Phenomenology helps us explore this question and understand the stakes of the problem in five chapters that each introduce a key concept informing a discussion of the being of objects in our world: “tiny ontology” as a model for thinking with things, ontography as a means of mapping them as parts and wholes, metaphorism as a way of getting at the experiences of nonhumans, carpentry as a philosophical practice, and wonder. Though it will be of special interest to readers with an interest in literature, philosophy, and the humanities, the book itself speaks beyond any single disciplinary frame. From the perspective of science studies or STS, it offers a way of moving with and beyond the language of Actor-Network Theory and “agency” of the non-human world, potentially helping us to reframe our questions about objects and the narratives of science, medicine, technology, and modernity in innovative ways. (At the very least, it has been transformative for this historian of science.) Not only is it thoughtfully argued and elegantly (at times, gorgeously) written, but it’s also a lot of fun.
