Chapter 7 - Helm's DeepQ1 - Who is your favorite character so far in the whole story?Q2 - Can you guys help me walk through this whole chapter? They turned and ran. At that moment some dozen Orcs that had lain motionless among the slain leaped to their feet, and came silently and swiftly behind. Two flung themselves to the ground at Eomer's ´ heels, tripped him, and in a moment they were on top of him. But a small dark figure that none had observed sprang out of the shadows and gave a hoarse shout: Baruk Khazaˆd! Khazaˆd ai-meˆnu! An axe swung and swept back. Two Orcs fell headless. The rest fled. Eomer ´ struggled to his feet, even as Aragorn ran back to his aid.Q3 - What do you think of the whole battle?Q4 - What do you think about Aragorn poking his head out and treating with the Orcs? There suddenly upon a ridge appeared a rider, clad in white, shining in the rising sun. Over the low hills the horns were sounding. Behind him, hastening down the long slopes, were a thousand men on foot; their swords were in their hands. Amid them strode a man tall and strong. His shield was red. As he came to the valley's brink, he set to his lips a great black horn and blew a ringing blast.Q4 - Thoughts on ErkenbrandQ5 - Thoughts on the changes of this chapter from book to movie?Chapter 8 -The Road to IsenguardQ1 - What do you think of the hillmen and men of Dunland? In the midst of the field before the Hornburg two mounds were raised, and beneath them were laid all the Riders of the Mark who fell in the defence, those of the East Dales upon one side, and those of Westfold upon the other. But the men of Dunland were set apart in a mound below the Dike. In a grave alone under the shadow of the Hornburg lay Ha´ma, captain of the King's guard. He fell before the Gate.Q2 - What do you think of Hama dying?Q3 - Has the forest moved? A mist gathered about them. Above them a few stars still glimmered faintly; but on either side there arose walls of impenetrable gloom; they were in a narrow lane between moving towers of shadow. Voices they heard, whisperings and groanings and an endless rustling sigh; the earth shook under them. Long it seemed to them that they sat and were afraid; but at last the darkness and the rumour passed, and vanished between the mountain's arms.Q4 - Are these Ents?Q5 - What do you think or Orthanc?

TCW Podcast Episode 224 - D&D & Video Games 3E In our final look at D&D & Video Games, we explore the early PC and mainframe computer scene, as well as the games created by fans of D&D. Various aspects of D&D were incorporated into these games, ranging from puzzles and light combat to full-on dungeon dives to claim treasure from the deepest levels. These games grew in popularity and led to others iterating on the aspects they enjoyed. Games on the PLATO system—such as Pedit5, D&D, and Orthanc—paved the way for reimagining these games on home computers, including the Apple II. This foundation led to the creation of seminal titles like Ultima and Wizardry, which would influence RPGs on PCs for over a decade. D&D has a long history of collaborating with different systems and ideas to create innovative forms of gaming, with the potential to continue transforming video games well into the future.
Though reviewing the movie version of the Two Towers, our hosts follow Tolkiens presentation by focusing solely on Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Merry, and Pippin. As always, they share their likes and dislikes. They also discuss how well the movie has held up over the last twenty years.
In this week's episode, we discuss writing dialogue in fiction, and share eight tips & tricks for writing better dialogue. TRANSCRIPT 00:00:00 Introduction, Writing Updates, and a Reader Question Hello, everyone. Welcome to Episode 162 of the Pulp Writer Show. My name is Jonathan Moeller. Today is July the 26th, 2023. And today we're going to discuss some tips and tricks about how to write dialogue. You may notice that I'm recording this a few days earlier than usual. There's some things coming up in the next few days I want to get a jump on, so I'm getting the episode recorded early so I can still get it out. First up, some updates on my current writing projects. I am now 72,000 words into Dragonskull: Crown of the Gods, which puts me at Chapter 16 of 20 of the book, so I am past the 75% mark and I'm hoping to wrap up the rough draft soon, possibly the week this episode will come out. After that I will write the bonus short story that I will give away for free to my newsletter subscribers. I think it's going to be called The Final Shield this time, and if all goes well, Dragonskull: Curse of the Orcs, no, Dragonskull: Crown of the Gods will be out sometime in August. Dragonskull: Curse of the Orcs is the audiobook that I am currently proof-listening to and that should hopefully be out towards the end of August or possibly September. Once Dragonskull: Crown of the Gods is out and published, the next project will be Silent Order: Pulse Hand, the final book in the Silent Order science fiction series. So it'll be exciting to get to that to finish the Dragonskull and the Silent Order series back-to-back. You might remember, on last's week show that I had a 10,000 word day, while writing Dragonskull: Crown of the Gods, and I'm pleased to report that I've had a second 10,000 word day while writing Dragonskull: Crown of the Gods, which makes sure makes my second 10K word day of 2023. Since I had only one of those in 2022, this is very gratifying. If I remember right, I had nine in 2021 and 22 of them in 2020. Well, there wasn't much else to do in 2020 except write, which I'm sure we can all recall it quite well. Before we get to our main topic of writing dialogue, we have a question from reader Judy, who asks: Are you finished with Caina? And the answer to that is no. After I write Silent Order: Pulse Hand, the next book I'm planning to write will be Ghost in the Serpent, the first book of the Ghost Armor series and hopefully that will be out sometime this fall, if all goes well. 00:02:19 Introduction to Main Topic: Writing Dialogue Now on to our main topic of the week: writing dialogue. The thing about writing dialogue is that it's often tricky because the way people talk is frequently very, very different from clear and lucid prose. Conversations are often rambling and incoherent, even to the participants. The tricky part when writing fiction is that 1: you're writing a story, and you need to move things along and 2: you want the dialogue to be comprehensible so people don't abandon reading your story. However, you don't want your dialogue to sound like two computers exchanging precisely written and grammatically accurate factoids. How to strike a balance between these points? Here are some tips and tricks for writing interesting dialogue: 00:03:02 Tip #1 Speech Should Reflect the Character Who is Speaking Number One: Remember that speech shouldn't sound like prose, and it should reflect the character who is speaking. Consider the following sentence: Maura parked her car at the gas station on the corner of 48th and Truman. Now if she needed to convey that information in dialogue, you just repeat that like this: “I parked my car at the gas station on the corner of 48th and Truman”, said Maura. However, unless the character tends to speak very precisely, most people will not talk that way. It will probably sound more like this: “Yeah. Parked over at the gas station on 48th”, said Maura. “You know, the one across from the dry cleaner.” Or depending on Maura's personality, it might be more like this: “You know that gas station where Jenkins threw up in the aisle?” said Maura. “Parked the car there. Yeah. I didn't go inside. Places is a dump. They may not have cleaned up the puke yet.” Dialogue as we know is often a reflection of personality. If Maura was a law enforcement officer setting a trap for a bank robber, she might say like this: “Parked at the gas station on 48th and Truman”, said Maura, “Ready and in position. No sign of the suspect.” But if she was a criminal who had left stolen merchandise in the car for her contact pickup, you might say like this: “Car's at the gas station across from the dry cleaners”, said Maura. “The one where Jenkins threw up after the 5th vodka martini, you remember. Stuff's in the trunk.” Dialogue will generally be less precise than clear prose and should reflect the character's personality whenever possible. 00:04:29 Tip #2: Avoid Info Dumping Number Two: avoid info dumping. One common technique is to use dialogue to convey information about the story to the reader. This can be done well, or it can be done clumsily. Science fiction and fantasy writers, alas tend to fall into this trap all too often because we have exotic concepts to explain to the audience, but you can see the problem very easily when it's done badly. Let's use a modern day example. Jenkins and Maura are about to fly on a plane departing from an American airport, and Maura has never flown before, so Jenkins needs to explain how a TSA security check works. In real life, the conversation would probably go like this: “So what am I supposed to do here?” said Maura Jennings sighed. “Didn't you read the PDF I sent you?” She rolled her eyes. “Fine”, said Jenkins. “Look, you put your stuff in these plastic tubs and then you take off your shoes and go through the scanner. Since you're wearing a tank top and TSA guys are usually pervs, you're going to get the enhanced pat down.” He feigned groping his own chest. “Don't be a jerk.” Now a writer succumbing to info dumping would probably have the conversation go like this: “So what am I supposed to do here?” said Maura. Jenkins turned to her. “As you know, Maura, in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the United States Congress passed the Aviation and Transportation Security Act, which created the Transportation Security Administration, which henceforth would have authority over civilian airport security on United States soil. Initially part of the Transportation Department, the TSA was moved under the authority of Homeland Security when that department was created in March of 2003….” You see the problem? No one actually talks that way in real life. The problem comes in when writers use infodumping and dialogue as a shortcut to worldbuilding. Fantasy and science fiction writers succumb to that temptation a lot, but we're not the only ones. Thriller writers, mystery writers, and romance writers whose protagonists have a lot of back story tend to fall into the shortcut as well. The better way to deal with this is with just enough information in the dialogue for the conversation to make sense, but to leave out enough that the reader is interested in finding out what is going to happen. Humans are innately curious. This is why when someone mentions something interesting that you've never heard before (like for example, your new boss is recently divorced and now engaged to the departmental secretary), the conversation immediately moves in that direction. But if two fictional characters mention something the reader hasn't heard before, they aren't obliged to explain it to the reader immediately, which will help hold their interest. For example, let's go back to Jenkins and Maura: “You've seriously never been on a plane before,” said Jenkins as Maura collected her stuff from the TSA's plastic tubs. “Nope”, said Maura, her frown edging towards a scowl. “Why not?” “Tyler was always going to take me to LA”, said Maura. “Where are we going next?” Her expression said further questions would not receive any answers, so they continued to the gate. In the story, if this is the first mention of Tyler, it adds a bit of mystery. Who is Tyler and why is Maura mad at him? If this is a romance, Tyler could be her ex. If this is a mystery or a thriller novel, Tyler could be a fellow criminal or another law enforcement officer. Not only is this closer to the way that real people actually talk, it provides a bit of a minor hook to keep the reader interested in the book and to keep the reader reading on. 00:07:40 Tip #3: Subtext Number Three: One of the most incredibly annoying things about human conversation is that people rarely say what they actually mean, and the surface topic of the conversation is often unconnected with the real meaning of the conversation. This is called subtext. One of the most common examples is Sherlock Holmes and his archnemesis Professor Moriarty playing chess. Holmes and Moriarity are discussing the game, but that's just the surface conversation. They're really talking about their rivalry. Or a Mafia thug walks into a shop and tells the owner that these rickety old buildings really need to have fire insurance. The Mafia guy isn't talking about the fire code or actually selling insurance. He's giving the subtle warning to the owner that he needs to pay protection money or his business is going to start suffering “accidents.” This can take place in less fraught circumstances. Like for example, a woman is angry than a man has been promoted over her at work. Rather than address the issue, she might start complaining about the contents of the vending machines, or insisting that every new project is doomed to failure. The contents of the vending machine or the scope of the project are irrelevant. The subtext to her complaints is that she's not happy she wasn't promoted. Communication breakdown can occur when the person speaking thinks their subtext is obvious and clear, but the person listening (listening, that's hard to say), but the person listening misses it entirely. Let's have some examples. Say Maura and Jenkins both worked for MegaCorp and Maura thinks the current district manager is incompetent and wants the job for herself. “Profits are down, production is down, and turnover is way up,” said Mora. “This can't keep going on.” “Uh-huh”, said Jenkins. “And I suppose you have a great idea about how to fix it?” Maura put her hands on her hips and glared at him. “Well, what if I do? Someone needs to step up and fix things.” In this conversation, Maura isn't flat out saying “I want to be the district manager.” She's just saying that things aren't going well and they need to be fixed. Indeed, she doesn't mention the district manager job at all. But it's immediately obvious to Jenkins (and hopefully to the reader), that Maura wants the job. If Jenkins misses the subtext, it might cause a conflict with Maura: “Profits are down, production is down, and turnover is way up,” said Maura. “This can't keep going on.” Jenkins shrugged. “The economy is bad. Inflation's up. Can't do much about that.” Maura folded her arms over her chest and glared at him. “Maybe we need some new leadership.” Jenkins groaned. “From where? We would need another search committee.” “An internal hire would be a better choice.” Jenkins laughed. “The people who already work here are idiots. If we did an internal search for a district manager, we'd probably end up with one even dumber than the one we already have.” Maura scoffed, shook her head, and stalked off. Jenkins watched her go, wondering what had annoyed her so much. Maybe those high heels were pinching her toes. So subtext can be a way to make dialogue more interesting to the reader, which leads us to the opposite of this technique: 00:10:40 Tip #4: The Character is Imagining a Subtext That Doesn't Exist Number Four: the character is imagining a subtext that doesn't actually exist. This happens all the time in real life, where people impute meanings to your speech that you didn't actually intend. Examples are myriad and you can no doubt think of several you have personally experienced from off the top of your head. For example, say someone invites you to a movie and you declined to go, saying that you don't feel up to it, maybe your stomach is upset. You have a headache, your knees hurt, or you're simply exhausted or broke and don't feel like going, but if you felt better or had more money, you would go to the movie. Except the person who invited you takes it as a personal insult, even though that wasn't your intent and not the subtext at all. The person who invited you imagined a subtext to your answer that did not exist. This also happens a lot on social media, where a lot of the visual and auditory cues that usually accompany conversation are absent. No doubt you like me, you can think of many examples. A great example from fiction is from J.R.R. Tolkien's Unfinished Tales, which is a collection of side writings and alternate drafts from when Tolkien was working on Lord of the Rings. In one section, Gandalf the Grey is speaking with Saruman the White, and they're discussing the problem of the One Ring. As they talk, Gandalf is smoking a pipe and blowing smoke rings. And Saruman (who by this time has fallen to Evil and is seeking the ring for himself) thinks that Gandalf is taunting him with the smoke rings, but Gandalf is doing no such thing. He still thinks of Saruman as a friend and trustworthy ally, and he just wants to smoke a pipe as they discuss the problem. The smoke rings are just to tease Saruman a little since Saruman has been giving Gandalf a hard time about smoking. At this point, Gandalf doesn't even know that Bilbo Baggins' magic ring is actually the One Ring. In his pride and paranoia, Saruman is imagining a subtext to the conversation that doesn't actually exist. Imaginary subtext often occurs when one character knows something that the other does not, but is unaware that the other character doesn't have this information. Let's have an example. In this version of Maura and Jenkins, Maura has arranged for the district manager of MegaCorp to get fired so she can get the job, but feels guilty about it. Jenkins is unaware of her machinations. “So, we're getting a new district manager?” said Jenkins. “Well, security just escorted the old one out the door, so yeah,” said Maura. “I wonder who the new one will be.” “An absolute moron,” said Jenkins. She glared at him, but he didn't notice. “Only a complete idiot would take over that job. Someone with more ambition than brain cells.” “Oh, very clever,” said Maura. “You've just been waiting to say that. Why don't you let me know how you really feel?” “What?” said Jenkins, surprised at your irritation. “What did I say?” As we can see in that example, Maura felt insulted, but Jenkins' intent wasn't to insult her, merely to observe that anyone stepping into the thankless job of district manager would regret it. But Maura thought Jenkins was talking about her and took it personally. 00:13:33 Tip #5: Profanity is Overrated. Number Five: profanity is overrated and everyone swears all the time in modern fiction, but it happens so often that profanity has become stale and overhead. It's like garlic salt or maybe cayenne peppers: a little bit goes a long way, and it's usually less than you think. Like, profanity might have been shocking 40 or 50 years ago, but most people swear constantly now, and writers tend to use profanity as a crutch, so it's best to go against the current and dial back the profanity. If you use a lot of profanity in your books, you're not being shocking or subversive, you're just being boring like everyone else. A good example might be The Avengers: Endgame movie. In the movie at a climatic moment, Tony Stark says, “And I am Iron Man.” However, in the original script, the line was apparently “F you Thanos.” Wouldn't that have been so much more boring? It sounds like something someone would say in a minor traffic accident or an argument about the building's shared dumpster: “Stop putting your ****** recycling in the trash can, Thanos!” But apparently one of the producers thought up the line at the absolute last minute, convinced the directors and the actor, and they shot it as a reshoot. It was a good decision, in my opinion, because the line is so much better. It perfectly fits how Stark's character always needs to have the last word and is an excellent callback to the first Iron Man movie from 2008. So it's best to be intentional with the use of profanity and not to use it as a crutch. An otherwise straightlaced character swearing in a moment of crisis could demonstrate the seriousness of the situation. Alternatively, you could have a character who swears a lot, except when he gets really angry, when he calms down and stops swearing entirely-it's the people who calm down and get calm and focused when they get angry you really have to watch out for. An observation after 12 years of self-publishing: no matter the level of profanity you have in your books, someone will be annoyed at you. If you have no profanity at all, people will complain that's unrealistic, especially if you're writing about soldiers and workmen and other people who traditionally curse a lot. Alternatively, if you have any level of profanity, people will complain about this as well. Like I recently got an email from a reader expressing gentle disappointment that Nadia swears so much in my book, Cloak of Dragonfire. But here's the thing: I tone it way down for the book. In my head, Nadia swears like an angry drill sergeant, or maybe a roofer who just accidentally shot himself in the foot with his nail gun, especially when she gets angry. But for the reasons I listed above, I don't like to overdo it, so that's a good reminder that no matter what you write, someone will be annoyed, so you might as well write as you think best. But overusing profanity is, in my opinion, just lazy. 00:16:14 #6: People Very Often Don't Answer Direct Questions Number six: people very often don't answer direct questions. If you listen carefully to real life conversations, you will notice that people rarely answer questions directly and often go off on tangents unconnected to the question. There's a quote from Lord of the Rings that illustrates the point perfectly, and short enough that I'll just read it here. The quote comes from pages 611-612 of the single-volume THE LORD OF THE RINGS hardback edition published in 1991 by Houghton Mifflin: ”Are we riding far tonight?” Gandalf asked Merry after a while. “I don't know how you feel with the small rag-tag dangling behind you but the rag-tag is tired and will be glad to stop dangling and lie down.” “So you heard that?” said Gandalf. “Don't let it rankle! Be thankful no longer words were aimed at you. He had his eyes on you. If it is any comfort to your pride, I should say that, at the moment, you and Pippin are more in his thoughts than the rest of us. Who you are; how you came here, and why; what you know; whether you were captured, and if so, how you escaped when all the orcs perished—it is with those little riddles that the great mind of Saruman is troubled. A sneer from him, Meriadoc, is a compliment, if you feel honoured by his concern.” “Thank you!” said Merry. “But it is a greater honour to dangle at your tail, Gandalf. For one thing, in that position one has a chance of putting a question a second time. Are we riding far tonight?” Gandalf laughed. “A most unquenchable hobbit! All wizards should have a hobbit or two in their care—to teach them the meaning of the word, and to correct them.” This quote is almost a perfect example of what I was talking about. In this conversation, Merry wanted to know how much farther they were riding tonight. Gandalf, his mind still occupied by the recent defeat of Saruman at Orthanc, ends up talking about that, which Mary mentioned as a joke. But Merry points out that Gandalf failed to answer the question, and Gandalf laughs and concedes the point. Here's another example with Maura and Jenkins. In this example, Maura has just become the new district manager of Megacorp and is very pleased with herself. Jenkin needs her to sign off on the Busywork Reports for the month, but Maura is still too happy with her new job and is going off on tangents. “Since you're district manager now, mind just signing off on those Busywork Reports?” said Jenkins, dropping the sheaf of papers on Maura's desk, which was entirely too large and expensive, he thought, given that it held only a laptop computer and Maura's new nameplate. “Assuming you're not too busy rewriting the dress code.” “Oh, that's just the start,” said Maura. She rose to her feet and paced to her windows. They looked impressive, but they faced the western parking lot, and Jenkins knew for a fact he got unpleasantly hot here during the afternoon. “There are going to be big changes around here, big changes. First thing, we're getting rid of all the deadwood. No more two hour lunches. No more days off so people can have a mental health day with their dogs or whatever.” “That's great,” said Jenkins. “But can you do that after you sign the Busy Work Reports?” Maura gave him an irritated glance. Now you can use this technique in a couple of different ways. It could show what someone is intending to do, as Maura's example indicates. You can also use it to show if someone doesn't actually want to answer the question, since the person being asked will keep locking onto new tangents and changing the topic to avoid the question. 00:19:06 Tip #7: Avoid Phonetic Dialects #7: avoid phonetic dialects. This might be a personal preference, but I strongly dislike when writers use phonetic dialects in dialogue. This is when the reader mutilates spelling to create an illusion of a dialect or an accent. For example, let's say Jenkins was about to say this: “Well, I reckon it's my it's time that my dog is hankering for his dinner,” said Jenkins. “Well, Ayuh reckin it's a-time fer me dahg to be hankerin' fer his dinnuh,” said Jenkins, his voice covered with the accent of a writer attempting to create an illusion of a dialect and failing miserably. Really, I find that very annoying and I'm not the only one. It's lazy writing. It borders on indulging in stereotyping, which is another kind of lazy writing. Since a stereotype is just a symbol used to represent a person so you since you don't have to do so, you don't have to do the hard work of describing that person. Phonetic dialect is also really hard to read, since your brain has to interpret the odd spellings. HP Lovecraft had a bad habit of doing this, and perhaps the single worst example I've ever read is at The Color at the End of Space, an otherwise excellent story. When the farmer attempts to explain the sinister alien force that invaded his farm and Lovecraft does his best attempt at a rural New England farmer accent and fails miserably. JK Rowling writes the excellent Cormoran Strike private investigator novels, but she occasionally uses phonetic dialect to represent the various different regional UK accents and it's just annoying. If you want to represent a regional accent, in my opinion it's better to do with patterns of speech, vocabulary and perhaps regional slang than with phonetic spellings. 00:20:42 Tip #8: One More Thing #8: One more thing. One curious feature of human conversations at the main point doesn't often arrive until the conversation is nearly over. Doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals notice this a lot. During an interaction with the patient, the main point, the actual reason for the visit, often won't come until the end of the conversation, usually presaged with “oh, one more thing.” This is usually true if the ailment in question is sensitive or somehow embarrassing. You see this in police procedurals and mystery novels quite a bit. The detective will be talking with the suspect or witness about something else entirely, getting them into a conversational rhythm and then drop the main question- when was the last time you saw Maura and Jenkins talking together, for example. And what were they doing? Let's have an example. In this example, newly promoted district manager Maura is asking Jenkins about Megacorp's most important account, which the company is in danger of losing: “So,” said Maura, fiddling with the paper clip holder on her oversized desk. “How are things in your department?” Jenkins shrugged. “About the same? No one really misses the old manager. Though people are just loving all the new dress code memos.” “Right, right,” said Maura, still sorting through the paper clips. “It's important that we represent a professional appearance. No more showing up to work in jeans or cargo shorts.” Jenkins smirked. “Yes, that will increase profits, won't it? Good to know that we are prioritizing the important things.” The sarcasm went right over her head. “Look, um, said Maura, and she stopped playing with the paper clips and folded her hands on the desk. “The government account. We need to talk about that.” “Ah”, said Jenkins. “I suppose you didn't call me in here to talk about the dress code after all.” In this example, Maura is worried about the big account, but can't bring herself to ask Jenkins about it right away. You can use this technique frequently or occasionally to indicate if a character is nervous or what the main thing they're worried about is, since they won't bring it up till the end of the conversion. So hopefully, those eight tips and tricks will help you write more realistic and entertaining dialogue for your readers. So that's it for this week. Thanks for listening to The Pulp Writer Show. I hope you found the show useful. If you enjoyed the podcast, please leave your review on your podcasting platform of choice. Stay safe and stay healthy and see you all next week.
** Use the code "GREAT" at https://shop.theonering.com to get $2 off anything! ** It's hard to believe, but this week we finish "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age"--the last chapter of The Silmarillion! We talk about the the truth and beauty of Middle-earth (and how we're not connected to it), how Peter Jackson portrayed the battle between Gil-Galad, Elendil, and Sauron poorly, and Saruman's mysterious visit to the east--after which he took up residence in Orthanc and started his evil turn. Then, join us in our extended episode (https://theonering.com/members) where we discuss if Isildur just took the glory over Elendil and Gil-Galad when they defeated Sauron, why Tolkien mentioned Frodo's destruction of the differently in The Silmarillion, and whether Sauron should've bribed the Dwarves with gold (since the Rings of Power didn't sway them a bit).

The next morning, Frodo wakes up early and meets Gandalf and Bilbo as he walks about the grounds of Elrond's house. They attend the Council together with Sam following behind, though he was not invited. There are many there already, including Elrond, Glorfindel, and Strider/Aragorn, as well as Men, Elves, and Dwarves unknown to Frodo. Glóin, one of the Dwarves, shares that a horseman from Mordor had come to them, asking about hobbits, and promising them magic rings of power if they showed Sauron friendship. Glóin has been sent to warn Bilbo that the Enemy is seeking him and his Ring. Elrond says the purpose of the Council is to answer the question of what is to be done with the Ring Sauron seeks. At this point, Elrond shares the entire history of the Ring, and how, in the Second Age of the world, Sauron forged the One Ring in secret to control all other rings of power, which had been made for use by Elves, Dwarves, and Men. He tells of how Gil-galad and Elendil fought Sauron and overthrew him, and how Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand. However, rather than destroy the Ring, Isildur claimed it as his own and was soon "betrayed by it to his death." The shards of Narsil, Elendil's sword, were given to Isildur's heir Valandil. The One Ring was lost, and in its absence, the Elves used their three rings to make beautiful things. The finding of the One Ring threatens all of these beautiful things, Elrond tells them. Boromir, a Man of Gondor, then tells his tale. Because Gondor is near Mordor, the growing power of the Enemy has already begun to affect that land. Amidst these rising tensions, Boromir and his brother Faramir (the sons of Denethor, Steward of Gondor) both have had the same prophetic dream, and they do not fully understand what it means. He has come to seek Elrond's wisdom on the matter. One of the references in Boromir's dream is to the "sword that was broken." Aragorn stands and displays his own sword, which everyone can see is broken in two pieces. When Boromir asks him who he is, Elrond interrupts, saying Aragorn is "descended through many fathers from Isildur Elendil's son of Minas Ithil." Aragorn reveals the sword is Narsil, and asks Boromir, "Do you wish for the House of Elendil to return to the Land of Gondor?" Bilbo interrupts, and so Elrond calls upon him to tell his part of the story next. He describes how he found the Ring: he had engaged in a game of riddles with Gollum, who had accidentally dropped the Ring, only to be picked up by Bilbo. Then Frodo tells of all that had happened since he acquired it. Both Legolas and Gandalf fill in gaps in understanding: first, Legolas tells the Council, Gollum, who had been held captive by the Elves, has escaped; then, Gandalf tells how Saruman, the head of the wizards' council, has betrayed them and seeks the Ring for his own use. Indeed, Gandalf reveals, Saruman imprisoned him on the pinnacle of Orthanc before he was rescued by an eagle. Then the assembled Company debates what should be done with the Ring. Some would like to hide it, or throw it in the sea. Boromir suggests using it for good ends. Elrond maintains the Ring cannot simply be hidden; it cannot be used for good; it must be destroyed in the fire of its forging. It is unclear who will take up this task, but finally Frodo says he will take the Ring to Mordor to destroy it. Elrond says Sam may go with Frodo. The Fellowship of the Ring: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Soundtrack composed by Howard Shore. Audiobook narrated, produced, and edited by Phil Dragash. Art by Jian Guo.

Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Ned's choice of topic: Ralph Bakshi's animated film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. A heavily promoted effort at the time due it being both the first ever version of Tolkien's work done for film as well as due to Bakshi's notable reputation as the most well known American animator since Walt Disney and Chuck Jones, the 1978 movie was a reasonable success but not a smash, and the fact that it was only the first half of a planned two-film sequence – but not marketed as such – led to confused audiences and an upset Tolkien reader fanbase. At once a surprisingly faithful if still heavily redacted version of the book and a very unusual mix of animation styles that grew out of Bakshi's earlier movies, the film has retained a cult following since, and the resulting contrast with the later Peter Jackson movies has proven illuminating to both. What makes the sequences like the Flight to the Ford both compelling viewing and something of a slog? Which voice actors bring a notable depth to their characters along with the script and animation efforts – and which ones end up undercutting their characters completely? How does the shifting between particular animation styles, even within scenes, both act as intriguing experiment aiming to solve particular problems and yet also a confusing mess? And what is up with that incredibly generic musical score?SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. Jackson riffed on this scene for a reason. And Jared did bake a cake for Megaphonic's Kitchen Party! Sziasztok, Ez itt a Vágatlan Verzió, három hetente jelentkező filmes podcast 49. epizódja. Isengard and the Tower of Orthanc are architecturally and strategically significant, but historically obscure. They're a perfect showcase of how Tolkien draws us into his world by giving us just a handful of fascinating tidbits but almost no concrete details. While Gandalf and Aragorn ponder the evening's events and finally identify the object of Pippin's affections as the palantír of Orthanc, a Nazgûl flies overhead — which means it's time for Gandalf and the sticky-fingered Took to exit, stage east. And as Shadowfax carries them over the plains at breakneck speed (not that any necks will be broken, we hope) we bring Book III of The Lord of the Rings to a close. But before we wrap the fifth season, a mailbag question about the podcast and listener expectations gets Alan and Shawn into introspective mode.
Fully fed, fully caught up, and fully reeking of pipe-weed, our heroes enter Isengard, where Gandalf demands to speak with Saruman at the foot of Orthanc. The Until-recently-white Wizard refuses to come down or let visitors in, but the White-now-and-check-out-my-new-skills Wizard manages to get his attention, and the parley begins. But although Saruman has lost his armies and devices, he still has some weapons left: his voice, bitter anger, and possibly some kind of Vorlon powers (because it's been too long since we got in a Babylon 5 reference).
The debate has raged for years: what are the two towers of the title? Is it Orthanc and Barad Dûr? Maybe Orthanc and Cirith Ungol? Perhaps Faramir’s base in Ithilien is in the running? In this week’s episode we’ll finally...barely address it. Many Partings -- After many days, when the festivities are over, the Company sets out for Rivendell. Aragorn tells Frodo that he knows the hobbit wishes for nothing more than to return home. Frodo answers that he wishes first to stop off at Rivendell to visit Bilbo one last time, as the older hobbit will likely die soon. On the way, they stop at Rohan and bid farewell to Éomer, honoring the memory of Théoden. After a brief stay in Rohan, they set off again. Arriving in Isengard, they meet Treebeard, the Ent leader who orchestrated the march on Saruman in The Two Towers. The Ents had promised to guard Saruman's old stronghold of Orthanc, ensuring that the corrupt wizard would never escape. Treebeard tells them of the flight of many Orcs and the doom the Orcs met in the forest. He relates that he reported news regularly to Saruman, who would come to the window of Orthanc to listen. But then the wizard withered away. Treebeard, to Gandalf's dismay, has released Saruman, for he did not wish to keep such a miserable creature caged. Gandalf warns Treebeard that Saruman still has the power of his voice—a power he has used to his advantage in the past. Proceeding onward, the group comes upon an old, ragged man leaning on a staff. They recognize him as Saruman. Another beggar in his company is Wormtongue, his former servant. The deposed Saruman is bitter but powerless. Galadriel and Gandalf offer Saruman mercy and reprieve. Their kindness irritates Saruman, who claims that with his demise, theirs will soon follow. After a few more days of slow and pleasant travel, Galadriel and Celeborn turn eastward and return home. The remaining travelers reach Rivendell and the House of Elrond, and they find Bilbo. The old hobbit sits quietly in a small room, surrounded by bits of paper and pencils. The next day, all of Rivendell celebrates Bilbo's 129th birthday. After a fortnight, Frodo realizes that he must return to the Shire. Bilbo chooses to remain in Rivendell, for he is far too old for any more travel. Bilbo gives Frodo three books of collected lore entitled Translations from the Elvish, asking Frodo to finish editing them. Before Frodo leaves, Elrond takes the hobbit quietly aside, assuring him that in time he himself will visit the Shire, and he will bring Bilbo with him.
Chapter 7: The Pyre of Denethor -- The narrative returns to the perspective of Pippin. When the Black Captain disappears from the gate of Minas Tirith, Pippin runs to Gandalf and tells him of Denethor's madness and the situation in the tower. Gandalf wishes to pursue the Nazgûl but knows he must save Faramir. As they race to the Citadel, Gandalf laments the Enemy's ability to bring evil and discord to the inner circle of Minas Tirith. Reaching the door to the House of Stewards, the two find Denethor's servants bearing swords and torches, standing before the lone figure of Beregond, who holds the door against them. Two servants have already fallen to Beregond's sword. The men cower at the sight of Gandalf, whose appearance is like a burst of white light. Denethor throws open the door, drawing his sword, but Gandalf lifts his hand and the sword flies from Denethor's grip. The wizard decries Denethor's madness, but the Steward says that Faramir has already burned. Rushing past, Gandalf finds Faramir still alive on the funeral pyre. To Denethor's protests and tears, Gandalf lifts Faramir and carries him away with a strength that surprises Pippin. Denethor, the wizard says, does not have the authority to order Faramir's death. Denethor laughs. Standing proudly, he produces from his cloak a palantír, similar to the Stone of Orthanc. He warns that the West is doomed, as he has foreseen the black ships of the Enemy approaching. The Steward condemns Gandalf for bringing a young upstart Ranger to replace him as ruler. Denethor wishes that things would remain as they always have been in Minas Tirith. He springs for Faramir, but Beregond stops him. Grabbing a torch from a servant, Denethor lights the funeral pyre. He throws himself into the raging fire, clutching the palantír. Gandalf and Beregond carry Faramir to the Houses of Healing. As they exit, the House of Stewards collapses in flames, and Denethor's servants run out. Soon after, they hear a great cry from the battlefield—the sound of Éowyn and Merry's defeat of the Lord of the Nazgûl. A sense of hope returns as the sun breaks through the Darkness. Gandalf discusses Denethor's palantír with Pippin and Beregond. Gandalf says he had always suspected that the Steward possessed one of the seven seeing-stones. The wizard surmises that Denethor, in his growing distress, began to use the stone, and through it he fell prey to the lies of Sauron.

The Voice of Saruman - Gandalf needs to speak to Saruman. He lets the others come along, and they go together to Orthanc. Saruman, whose voice can mesmerize, tries to win over Théoden with his beautiful voice. When this is unsuccessful, he tries to convince Gandalf to join him. Gandalf is having none of it, however, and casts Saruman out of the Council of the Wise, and breaks his staff. As they turn to leave, Wormtongue throws a large, round object out of the window at them. Pippin picks it up, but Gandalf immediately takes it away. Gandalf, Aragorn, Pippin, Merry, Gimli, Legolas, and those from Rohan prepare to leave for Edoras, leaving Treebeard in charge of making sure Saruman does not escape. The Ents promise to watch Saruman carefully.
Flotsam and Jetsam - Aragorn, Gandalf, Gimli, and Legolas spend time with Merry and Pippin, catching up on what has been going on during their separation. They also seem to have grown a few inches—something Legolas attributes to drinking the waters of the Ents. Among the other goodies, the hobbits have also found some Longbottom Leaf, which is produced in the Shire. Aragorn gives the hobbits the things of theirs he picked up along the way, and the hobbits fill the other three in on what has happened since they were captured by the Orcs. They explain the Ents "roused" themselves and began to march on Isengard to destroy it, and the huorns followed behind. At Isengard, the Ents tore into the rock and laid waste to the place—all except for the tower of Orthanc, which is protected by some magic Ents cannot overcome. The Ents then changed the flow of the Isen to fill in all the tunnels under Saruman's stronghold, and make escape impossible. Gandalf came and spoke with Treebeard about the situation at Helm's Deep, and when he left again, the huorns silently went toward Helm's Deep to form the mysterious forest. The hobbits also note Wormtongue did indeed make it to Isengard and is currently trapped in Orthanc with Saruman.
Bill & Ted discuss the extended edition of Peter Jackson’s 2002 adaptation of the JRR Tolkien’s 1954 Lord of the Rings Book “The Two Towers.” On the hunt for Hobbit-nappingOrcs, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli meet an unexpected old friend and become embroiled in the defense of Rohan at Helm’s Deep against the tower of Orthanc […]
The Road to Isengard - No one seems to be sure where the strange trees came from, but all are joyful the battle was won. Gandalfconvinces Théoden and his allies to ride to Isengard, and, not knowing exactly what to expect, they agree. Nearing Isengard, the mysteries intensify: they are surprised to see some Ents, which no one but Gandalf even knew existed, and when they come to the River Isen, it has mysteriously slowed to a trickle. That night, they feel a rustling darkness moving around them, and in the morning, the strange trees are gone. They continue on to Isengard, noticing as the River Isen resumes its normal flow. Arriving at Orthanc, the tower in which Saruman lives, they see two small figures napping and smoking amidst a great deal of destruction. These small figures turn out to be Merry and Pippin, who have been given instructions to greet them. Gimli, Legolas, and Aragorn are overjoyed to see the two hobbits. Gandalf and Théoden meet with Treebeard.
167: Council of Elrond Session 43 12/08 In which we see Radaghast’s curtain call, as Sauruman’s pawn. The Eagles evolve from talking fairytale animals to agents of angels. The Wind Lord, Gwaihir rescues Gandalf after an entire summer stuck in Orthanc’s tower. Deus Ex Aquila: the eagles do seem to specialize in rescuing virtuous people (and their corpses) from “Sticky Wickeds,” don’t they? HOMEWORK: Find instances of “To try to” and “To try and” and we’ll examine it next time. Field Trip: Vales of Anduin, Blomgard “Deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised.” ~J.R.R. The Council of Elrond - The next morning, Frodo wakes up early and meets Gandalf and Bilbo as he walks about the grounds of Elrond's house.

Frodo finally learns why Gandalf never came as promised: Saruman the (Until Recently) White has turned to the dark side! The betrayal sinks in as the wizard tells the tale of his imprisonment at Orthanc and his rescue by Gwaihir, swiftest of the Great Eagles. With the Council finally caught up, they turn to the real question: what to do with the Ring? (And no, Gwaihir isn’t taking it anywhere.) We celebrate an important Tolkien birthday, go on tour with the Dreadful Nine, and wonder what lucky person in Rivendell got picked to hang the Ring on Frodo’s neck.

The party is still finding their way through the catacombs of Orthanc. In this session they are on the verge of finding Taradon's shield, the embodiment of his "Wagers" diamond.
The group is in Isengard. Saruman informs the party that Taradon built Orthanc back in the Second Age. He then grants permission to search through Orthanc's catacombs to find the shield of Taradon and the last item of Taradon's Wager.
Welcome to our first ever listener question episode! Thanks to Deb for this intriguing idea. 1:00 Tom Shippey, sources 1:20 Hi Deb! 1:37 Orc clans - warlike 1:50 Sauron and Morgoth found ways to unite them. 2:00 Nature of evil 2:30 People asked Tolkien this very question! Specifically Peter Hastings, the manager of the Newman Catholic Bookshop. 2:50 Naturally bad, but not irredeemably bad. 3:20 Who is Tom Shippey? 4:20 Orcs made by Morgoth 4:30 Evil can’t create, can only corrupt. 5:00 Morgoth made orcs in mockery of the elves and Eru. 5:15 It’s an example of subverting God’s will. 5:30 Orcs in other literature are generally derived from Tolkien (discussion of Bright). 7:10 Orcs and loyalty. See Tom Shippey’s Orcs, Wraiths, and Wights. Orcs show knowledge of good and evil. 7:38 “Regular Elvish Trick” 8:00 Elvish = bad, orcs are the opposite of elves. 8:20 Dan thought orcs would have opposite morals but they don’t. 8:40 Elves can be bad too, just look at Fëanor (or Eöl). 8:50 Orcs are the infantry of the old war against the Vala and the elves in the first age. 9:18 Morgoth put his power into his works, the evil dilutes. 9:40 Erica’s amazing hand gestures. 9:50 Morgoth’s diluted evil - this idea has spread to other fantasy. 10:14 The dilution of evil is also dilution of control, so Sauron has a harder time controlling them than Morgoth did. 10:20 Tolkien tossed around the idea of a hive mind, but never really settled on it. They misbehave. 10:40 Ocrs that were elves vs. orcs that were men? 11:00 Orcs vs. goblins - idea for future research for Erica! Or, if you know, please tell us where Erica can look it up! 11:20 Goblins/elves = Moria, Orcs/men = Mordor? (upon further consideration, Erica doesn’t think this part is terribly likely because both of those places are extremely far East considering when orcs came into being) 12:10 We solved everything! Wait… not in any way… 12:27 Melkor corrupted orcs and they serve him out of fear. 12:47 The alternative is unpleasant 13:00 Born, not manufactured like the goo chamber in Orthanc in the movies. 14:00 Initial group created in the first age and the rest descended from them. 14:20 Is the goo chamber in Orthanc corruption? (Erica needs to watch the special features again) 14:54 Could there be a good orc? Yes. Not irredeemable. 15:00 It’s important to Tolkien to have redemption as an option. 15:24 Catholic background - post-fall beings with free will 15:50 Nothing can be created without Eru Tokien’s letters p 195 - “by accepting or tolerating their making… orcs would become part of the World, which is God’s and ultimately good”. 16:28 Orcs know good and evil so they MUST be redeemable. 16:40 Only Eru could create things with independent thought 17:05 Eru wouldn’t sanction Melkor’s works like he did Aulë’s. 17:24 Corruption isn’t inheritable 17:50 Don’t know about socialization of orcs. 18:00 Children of a warlike, violent life. This episode of the podcast highlights the resolution of the conflicts at Isengard and Helm's deep. Jimmy and Alex wind it down with in depth descriptions of the siege of Orthanc and the rise and and fall of Saruman the White who gets less credit than he deserves as one of the great characters in the Tolkien universe.
In this continuation of our conversation about the stewards of Gondor, we talk about Denethor using the palantír, Sauron using the palantír, and the different military situations in Osgiliath and Ithilien. Episode Timeline 1:00 Where did he get a palantír anyway? 1:20 Fëanor. Kind of the worst IMHO. 1:45 Elendil took 3 palantíri to the north kingdom. One is with Círdan in the Grey Havens, one at 2:25 Amon Sûl (Weathertop), one at Annûminias (capital of the north kingdom). Isildur and Anárion each had 2. One at Minas Ithil (Minas Morgul), one at Osgiliath, one at Orthanc, and one at Minas Anor (Minas Tirith). 3:11 Wormtongue throws one at Gandalf. 3:35 Pippin and Aragorn both look into it. 4:07 Effort of will. - How palantír work. 4:19 Belle’s mirror 4:48 Point your palantír in the direction you want to look! 5:20 Palantír stuff is in Unfinished Tales. 5:45 Mental effort to focus: UT p 403 6:13 Light-related stuff with Fëanor. 6:30 Stewards mostly didn’t use it. 6:44 Sauron used his powers of fear and domination to pull the gaze of the other palantír. 7:09 Sauron turned Saruman through a palantír, but not Denethor. Saruman wasn’t being controlled by Sauron, but he wasn’t very helpful. 7:50 Saruman was trying to play both sides and failed. 8:15 Denethor could use his palantír by right, but it wasn’t a very good idea. 8:28 Technically, they all belong to Aragorn, but the stewards held power in place of the kings so the right to use it belonged to Denethor as well. 9:28 Some of the people of Minas Tirith were Nûmenórian, but not all Gondorians are. The line of Eӓrendil is part elvish, but not all Nûmenórians were descendants of Eӓrendil. 10:17 Denethor was using the palantír to get the information he needed to fight the war. 10:44 He continued to use it even though it was a huge mental strain and aged him prematurely. 11:05 Sauron was drawing palantír to him but Denethor could turn it away. That’s a huge deal. 11:20 Denethor was taking really big risks because he needed the information. This was the only way to do it, even though he knew it could destroy him. 11:30 Dan talks a little about how military intelligence works. Tolkien would have known about that and it was a subtle and interesting way to use that knowledge in the book. 13:20 Scene of Denethor eating is SO AWFUL and UNCOMFORTABLE. It’s supposed to be. 14:10 Shoutout to Billy Boyd. Wow! 14:55 Denethor had ONE JOB! 15:28 Hey Aragorn, what have you done lately? 15:50 He was hiding up north while Denethor was risking himself using the palantír and sending his sons to die. 17:03 In Rohan (Norse) the aristocracy earned honor in battle, so they were out in the front of battle. Gondorian culture is different. 17:50 Aragorn is out in front, like at the Black Gate where he’s all later, haters! 18:57 In Osgiliath, it’s whatever fight you can make it. 19:10 Boromir is a cavalier, Faramir is a ranger. Ithilien requires stealth. 19:34 Gondor CIA? 20:00 The brief geography of Mordor/Osgiliath/Gondor. 20:57 Erica doesn’t want to get into the Kinstrife right now. Maybe another time! The Nicks fall into a meme-hole, discuss the doings of Gandalf and Saruman, and finally get down to brass tacks to decide what is to be the fate of this Council... and The Ring. THIS JUST IN! A COUNCIL HAS GATHERED….TO COUNCIL.... ELVES, DWARVES, MEN, AND HALFLINGS TOGETHER UNDER ONE ROOF! DELIBERATIONS ENSUE AND STORIES ARE TOLD -- INCLUDING BILBO’S! ISILDUR’S BANE REVEALED! WHY ARE WE HERE? CAN ONE SIMPLY WALK INTO MORDOR, AND WHAT IS GANDALF’S STORY? Maps Map of Middle-earth LoTRproject.com interactive map - Caution: spoilers for new readers! Notes for this episode Use the Force Harry Vader Brita Saruman Trololo Trolling Saruman Part 2 Trolling Saruman Part 3 Other fandom trolling memes: 1 2 3 4 5 The story in this chapter Gandalf's Tale: Gandalf has the longest part to tell - but he has done the most to understand the enemy, the Ring, and to set in motion the tale we now read. Saruman The Rings and their jewels or lack thereof Hunting for Gollum Saruman knew of writing upon the Ring - but what is the source of his knowledge Who else but Sauron held the Ring? Isildur That means Minas Tirith might hold a clue Abandoning the chase to go to Gondor! Denethor not very welcoming The scroll of Isildur describing the “fire writing” unknown language - but eleven letters Gandalf HAS tested the Ring Speaking the words of Mordor - of the Ring Gollum did go to Mordor He was forced to spill his guts about the Ring The servants of the enemy have been to the Shire, and now know - perhaps the enemy already knows - that the Ring is in Rivendell Gollum imprisoned with the Wood Elves Definitely still full of mischief Legolas speaks up in distress Gollum has escaped How so? Was it coordinated? Did he have help? Or was he just being opportunistic? Gollum is cunning, escapes the skill of the elves to track Heading to Dol Guldor Gandalf - Gollum may have a part to play yet - Tolkien keeps insisting on this - it must mean something What of Saruman? Drawn to Orthanc by the message of Radagast (taken advantage of my Saruman) - Tells of Nazgul The Nazgul keep asking for the Shire Saruman summons Gandalf to give him “aide” Radagast to send messages Bree - stopped at the Prancing Pony (when was all of this?) To Isengard - Orthanc - Built by Numenor - At the Gap of Rohan Fear fell on him inside Isengard Saruman the White or…. Many Colors Saruman feels that Gandalf has been hiding information in the Shire Saruman has contempt for Radagast … and Gandalf… and their colors “Saruman the Wise” “Saruman ring maker” “Saruman of many colors” White - can be broken - or - is perfect Leaving the path of wisdom A choice The world of men which we must rule We need power “WE” “There is no help in elves or dying Numenor” Join with that power - there is hope that way - and rich reward Join the evil way despising the many evil things biding their time to come to their true purpose. Knowledge, Rule, Order No change in designs - only in our means The Ruling Ring - “If WE could command that, then the power would pass to US.” Gandalf a prisoner of Orthanc - on the pinnacle A narrow stair of many thousand steps. In Letter 210 - Tolkien tells us that Orthanc is 500 feet tall In modern American building terms that is about 29 stories. Not huge - but massive for the surrounding area To take the stairs literally then - 500 feet divided by “many thousand” (5000?) works out to be approximately 1000 steps per hundred feet. - 100 steps per 10 feet or 10 steps per foot. Pits and forges, wolves, and orcs - Saruman is building an army - to rival Sauron How was this kept hidden from Gandalf when he got there? Or did it happen while he was there? Frodo calls back to a dream! (REVISIT PIN) It was late Radagast was true and trustworthy The Eagles - Gwaihir Rohan Tribute of horses - tribute of horses and many to Mordor It’s a lie Evil at work Shadowfax Tireless, swift as the flowing wind, silver by day, shade by night, light footfall, unridden, untamed, Gandalf reached the Shire when Frodo was in the Barrow Downs though they left the same day (Rohan, Hobbiton) Gaffer - changes for the worst (Needs a pin?) Changes already started? Has Saruman already started to tear it apart looking for the Ring? Crickhollow Broken into - Hope left Gandalf To Bree - Butterbur Good news - renewed hope! A night’s rest. The Nazgul’s movements 2 Nazgul in Bree 4 in the Shire 2 at Crickhollow Captain in secret south of Bree After the attack on Bree/Crickhollow Some across country Eastward The Captain and others along the Road 2 days out from Bree - Gandalf beset in the Ring of Amon Sul - Weathertop The Wraiths were already there. Closed around at night - Light and Flame! Gandalf fled to the North - then toward Rivendell Gandalf nearly 14 days to Rivendell Only 3 days before Frodo End of tale THE PURPOSE! - What shall we do with the Ring The old forest used to stretch from where it is to the other side of Isengard (Fangorn even?) Can we obtain help from Tom Bombadil? Send the Ring to him for safe keeping? The Ring has no power over him. He would forget it and throw it away Also, even the enemy could be held off - his country would be besieged and ultimately overthrown The Ring cannot be kept away by strength only 2 options Send it over the Sea They would not receive it - it belongs to Middle-earth Destroy it We have no craft that can unmake it. OR cast it into the deeps - where it could not be recovered. Only a delay tactic Gandalf wants to make an end of Sauron - not delay Sauron - would expect the Westward option (in or over the sea) He would March up the coast to the Grey Havens Westward road seems easiest - and therefore must be avoided It will be watched That leaves only the option to undo the Ring The only hope - to take the Ring to Mordor - to the fire Frodo felt a dead darkness in his heart Boromir Why hide and destroy? What if it has come to us in our great moment of need? Why not wield it? Valor needs first strength, and then a weapon. The Ring can be our weapon. Elrond We cannot use it It was made by Sauron and is his alone it cannot be wielded by any except those with great power of their own. But for them, the desire of it corrupts their heart Like Saruman - corrupted by the thought alone It is evil and dangerous Nothing is evil in the beginning - even Sauron. Boromir So be it Gondor will fight on Perhaps the sword that was broken can help “If the hand who wields it holds more than an heirloom but also the sinews of the kings of men” May the day not be delayed It would comfort us to know others fought also Gloin More power if the people's join together What of the three rings of the elves? They were made by the dark lord long ago Do they remain? Are they idle? Elrond We cannot speak of them They are not idle, but they also are not weapons But if Sauron regains the One all their strength would be turned to destruction If the One is destroyed Perhaps they will be freed, and be able to heal the hurts of the world Or perhaps they will fail and many things will fade and be forgotten Glorfindel But all the Elves are willing to take this chance! Back to the destruction of the Ring What strength have we for the finding of the fire? That is the path of Despair! Or Folly! Gandalf Despair Is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt Wisdom to recognize necessity when all other courses have been weighed Folly It may appear to those who cling to false hope. Let folly be our cloak/veil before the eyes of the enemy The only measure Sauron knows is Desire, “the desire for power and so he judges all hearts.” He does not think that anyone can refuse it, and therefore follow through with destroying it If we seek to destroy it - we shall put him out of reckoning AKA - he won’t see it coming - it’s not a possibility he thinks would ever happen “This quest may be attempted by the weak with as much hope as the strong.” Small hands do them because they must While the eyes of the great are elsewhere (THIS IS THE CRUX OF THE PLAN!) Bilbo - It’s plain enough what you’re pointing at I started it, and I must finish it. Boromir nearly laughs at Bilbo Elrond - your part is ended What do you mean by “they” The messengers who are sent with the Ring Bilbo - “Exactly, and who are they to be?” That seems to be the only thing this Council needs to decide Let’s get some names together No one spoke - looking downcast - in deep thought Frodo - felt a dread or doom on him And an overwhelming desire to rest in peace with Bilbo in Rivendell “At last with an effort, he spoke and wondered to hear his words, as if some other will was using his small voice. ‘I will take the Ring.’ [NJ - DEFINITION OF BRAVERY - the quality or state of having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty. -- speaking up in spite of deep desires because it is the thing that must be done, or the right thing to do.] Elrond I think that this task is appointed for you, and if you do not find a way no one will. But it is a heavy burden I do not lay it on you but if you take it freely I would say that your choice is right. And though all the mighty elf-friends of old, Hador, Hurin, Turin, and Beren, you shall be seated among them. SAM! [Again eavesdropping] -- But you won’t send him off alone! No indeed - You at least shall go with him. A nice pickle we’ve landed ourselves in, Mr. Frodo. New Characters: Denethor - Steward of Gondor Saruman the White/Many Colored - Istari, Leader of the White Council Gollum (makes an appearance) Theoden - King of Rohan Shadowfax? - Lord of Horses Radagast the Brown - Istari, part of the White Council Links greendragonlive.com Twitter Facebook iTunes/Apple Podcast Stitcher Google Play Music YouTube "Five Armies" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Special thanks to our friend Harry Murrell for the use of his music.
