It's just before dawn on the morning of 25 October, 3018 of the third age. The embers of the fires from the night before turn to ash. The stars dwindle, the waterfalls begin to crescendo with the energy of another day. A cloaked figure stands alone in deep contemplation. Gandalf the Grey - steeling himself for the council where the fate of many shall be decided. We meet Gandalf at this very moment and offer him a gift... a tarot reading, from our very own Molly. This episode was an experiment in trust, and well, it really paid off. This is a deep dive into Gandalf; Mithrandir, Tharkûn. We explore his story through a very potent half-Celtic Cross reading. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we loved recording this. Find us @fortheshire.pod to see the imagery in Molly's spread and more inspiration for our next epsiode. "Wisest of the Maiar was Olórin'. He too dwelt in the house of Lorien, but his ways took him often to the house of Nienna and of her he learnt pity and patience."

Each year Radio Rotary interviews the current District 7210 Governor (DG); for Rotary year 2022-23 the DG is Suffern Rotarian Larry Palant, who in 20 years of Rotary membership has previously handled a number of important assignments, including promoting ShelterBox and leading the Membership Committee. DG Palant discusses how the District focuses on different causes throughout the year, warm clothing in the fall, food security in the winter, and the environment in the spring. A relatively new focus, promoted by Rotary President Jennifer Jones, the first woman to head Rotary International, is DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion). Gandalf has rejoined the fray at the turning of the tide and with the help of Aragorn, Legolas & Gimli, King Théoden and his men leave Edoras ready for battle. And today, a battle they will get. Thanks for stopping by today as we jump into the next five chapters of The Two Towers which include Helms Deep through The Palantír. Stick around while we cover the siege which encompasses all of Saruman's might against a much smaller force, the Ents taking advantage of a defenseless Isengard, a grand reunion amongst friends, a dispute amongst Wizard's, and an glass ball orb that almost ruins everything. With Chase and Josh describing one of the most climactic battles in the series, discussing what stuck out most in each chapter, touching on easy to miss detail, pointing out major foreshadows, and debating some interesting questions... Don't miss out! "Behold, I am not Gandalf the Grey, whom you betrayed. I am Gandalf the White, who has returned from death. You have no colour now, and I cast you from the order and from the Council."

Saruman, and his mind of metal and wheels… gets squished by a big metal wheel. Subtle! A drinking contest lets Gimli burp and fart his way to new lows. Eowyn dreams of Númenor. Pippin goes cuckoo for a Palantír, and we get into what exactly those are: basically, big goth bowling balls.

In order to inherit His promise you must leave what you Know- and follow Him to the places He leads you to go.Pay attention to who you're following. You can't just follow anyone. You must follow a person that's going in the right direction. Discipleship is not a bad word- it's a Bible word.We must come to a place where we don't make decisions based on how they will benefit or effect us or our lives. But we need to be fully surrendered to the place that Jesus truly is our Lord and the King of our lives that we say YES no matter what the cost! Get rid of all ulterior motives, all agendas and put your arms up and knees down, be fully surrendered and say Here I am Lord!
Discussion of The Two Towers, Book Three, Chapter Eleven Join Cam and Maggie for – BREAKING NEWS: New Lord of the Rings movie just announced! We start the episode by reacting to the exciting announcement of new anime prequel The War of the Rohirrim. Then we move into discussing this wonderful chapter, the last part of the first half of Two Towers [yes that was a lot of math for me]. Crystal balls are the object of fascination here, as Tolkien pivots hard back to magical objects being the roots of all evil and the main engines propelling the story forwards. This time, it's Pippin forming an unhealthy attachment to the magical red flag, and depending on who you ask, he's either falling victim to the will of the crystal ball itself [Maggie] or being possessed by Saruman [Cam]. Gandalf the Grey seems to return, later on, and The Black Riders are back too – it's like a family reunion. We bask in the gothic aesthetic of the Black Riders and take a moment to side-eye Gandalf the White waxing poetic about magical objects when he sort of is one himself now. At one point, Cam uses the term “reanimated corpse” and we finish by considering this chapter as a concentrated version of Tolkien's Middle-earth story. Picture an accordion all scrunched up, it's like that with hobbits. In our Second Breakfast, we reflect on our recent viewing of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and our brains' inability to consume any art now without connecting it back to LOTR. It's exhausting, but you seem to enjoy it. One is sci-fi and the other is fantasy, but they're kinda exactly the same story written around the same time? Cam's got examples, and Maggie jumps to / spoils his grand finale about thirty seconds into the conversation. Here, I'll just do it here, why not? What's the point, you know, like, of anything? HAL is the Ring. Follow us on Instagram: @secondbreakfastpod Send us your feedback and theories: secondbreakfastpod@gmail.com Check out our illustrated YouTube clips page: https://bit.ly/2OT6RP3

The Palantír - Later that night, Pippin becomes restless, thinking about the round object he had briefly held. Letting his curiosity get the better of him, he sneaks the object away from Gandalf, and looks into it. But as he does, a fiery glow emanates from the ball, and suddenly Pippin collapses with a cry. Gandalf wakes and begins to question Pippin, asking what he saw and what happened. Pippin reports he saw towers and nine winged creatures, and a voice asked him who he was. Pippin had answered, "a hobbit." Gandalf is relieved after talking to Pippin, saying the hobbit had come out of the encounter without being corrupted. Gandalf then decides to give the ball to Aragorn for safekeeping, and kneels as he hands it over. Aragorn accepts this responsibility because the object is a palantír that once belonged to Elendil. Gandalf decides Pippin will accompany him to Minas Tirith. The two ride to Gondor on Shadowfax, and Gandalf tells Pippin the palantír is one of seven seeing stones that came with the Men of Westernesse and were used in the past to communicate between different locations. Now, however, they seem to be controlled by Sauron. Gandalf deduces that Saruman was corrupted because he used the very one Pippin had his hands on. It is clear the finding of the palantír is a game-changer, with the benefit of causing Sauron to act hastily, thinking he can now easily take the Ring from the hobbit (he incorrectly assumes Pippin has the ring). However, this means war with Sauron is on its way.

After a life changing performance experience watching the Dallas Street Choir sing at national ACDA conference a couple years ago, I have the honor of interviewing Dr. Jonathan Palant, the conductor. Listen to hear his perspective on inequality in music and making a community space for singing. Jonathan Palant is Associate Professor and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Texas at Dallas and is founder and conductor of both Credo, a 140-member community choir, and the Dallas Street Choir, a musical outlet for those experiencing homelessness and disadvantage. In addition, Dr. Palant is Director of Music at Kessler Park United Methodist Church and is employed by the Dallas Independent School District to mentor middle and high school vocal music teachers. In June 2016, Dr. Palant made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut performing with renowned artists Frederica von Stade, Harolyn Blackwell, Jake Heggie, and Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz. From 2007-2011, he served as Artistic Director of Dallas’ Turtle Creek Chorale. Prior to that, Palant held collegiate teaching positions at Western Kentucky University and Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan. He taught secondary choral music at University School, an all-boys independent school in Cleveland, Ohio, and San Pasqual High School in Escondido, California.Dr. Palant currently serves as president of the National Alliance for Music In Vulnerable Communities, Community Choir Repertoire and Standards Chair for the Southwest American Choral Directors Association (SWACDA), and sits on the board of directors of the Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses. He has also served on the state board of the Michigan chapter of the American Choral Directors Association and Youth First Texas where he was founder and conductor of Dallas PUMP!, a choir serving at-risk youth. In late 2017, the Dallas Morning News named Palant one of nine “Texan of the Year” finalists, and in 2016, Musical America named him one of their “Innovators of the Year” for establishing the Dallas Street Choir. Both Palant’s book, Brothers, Sing On! Conducting the Tenor-Bass Choir, and his Brothers, Sing On! This is the first part of a long conversation about the First Age elvish craftsman Fëanor. We discuss background information about who he is and why he is important to talk about. It will give a lot of context to some other topics in Middle Earth. This was recorded a couple of years ago in the summer. We’re outside, there will be noises! 2:24 What is it about Fëanor that is worth discussing? 3:30 Dan keeps saying Ga-laid-riel 3:51 Fëanor is not mentioned in LOTR, but his influence is enormous 4:30 Dan hasn’t read the Silmarillion 4:43 Who is this Fëanor guy? 5:00 Noldorian craftsman, was taught by an elvish apprentice of Aulë 5:25 Sauron was also a servant of Aulë 6:10 The Silmarils - contain part of Fëanor so they can not be replicated, even by Aulë. Also contain light of the trees 6:37 Morgoth destroyed the lamps and was imprisoned by the Vala. 6:48 Yavanna creating the trees. 6:54 Creating the Silmarils, trees, sea, and the fire of his spirit 7:17 Silmarils shone from within, Varda hallowed them. If you’re evil, no touchie or it will burn you. 7:40 Silmarils are the greatest work of any elf ever 8:00 Fëanor created the Elvish script - Tengwar - the writing on the one ring and also created the Palantíri. 9:14 Morgoth was released from prison right around the time Fëanor made the silmarils. 9:38 Morgoth spreading rumors that Fëanor’s half brother Fingolfin wanted the high kingship. 9:57 Finwë’s wives 10:43 Morgoth stirred up trouble, telling Fëanor that everyone wanted to steal the silmarils 11:25 Fëanor threatened Fingolfin publicly because of Morgoth’s lies 11:33 Adam and Lilith? 12:15 The awakening of the elves - elves were brought to Valinor by Oromë 13:13 Varda is the elves’ favorite vala because the first thing the elves saw were stars. 13:50 Finwë’s second wife had 2 calmer children. Finarfin and Fingolfin. Finarfin is Galadriel’s awesome dad. 14:56 Míriel and Indis - women are not discussed much except Galadriel. 15:48 Erica made a family tree of the house of Finwë. 17:00 Fëanor was creative but had a dark side, threatening his half brother at a party 17:25 The Vala tried to recapture Melkor when they heard he was making trouble. 18:07 The darkening of Valinor - Ungoliant, the trees, the silmarils, and Finwë 18:44 Vala want to revive the trees by breaking the silmarils to restore light to valinor. 19:30 Fëanor denying the Vala the silmarils shows his character 20:20 The silmarils are sacred objects and light is the cornerstone of the culture. 20:40 Can’t recreate the silmarils, it might not kill Fëanor to destroy the silmarils, but it might? 21:22 When Fëanor found out all the stuff Melkor did, he named him Morgoth, which means “abhorred one”. Then everyone called Melkor that forever. 21:50 The oath of Fëanor - He and his sons take an oath to hunt down anyone that keeps a silmaril from him or his family. DAN IS LAUGHING RIGHT NOW! 22:22 Dan is singing a camp song. Erica never went to camp. References: All music is courtesy of Doctor Turtle.

RadioRotary interviews Suffern Rotarian Larry Palant, membership chair for Rotary District 7210, about changes in Rotary membership opportunities and ways to increase membership in Rotary clubs, including new types of clubs that have been invented to make membership easier for the very busy young professionals. Today, about half the clubs in the eight-country District 7210 meet weekly for lunch, but increasingly as members from the spread-out hamlets and villages of the Lower Hudson Valley have less time to travel to a meeting for lunch, clubs are meeting for breakfast, dinner, or just for drinks. For example, some clubs meet for lunch two or three times a month, then have a dinner meeting that supports a local charity. The e-club, with members from around the world (but still in the District) is a popular option, while Mr. Palant also describes a new “passport club” concept, in which members only meet four times a year, but can use their passports to work on projects with other Rotarians in between meetings. Increasingly also, clubs are accepting corporate members, usually so that several employees of a corporation can be sponsored as members of a local Rotary Club. In this continuation of our conversation about the stewards of Gondor, we talk about Denethor using the palantír, Sauron using the palantír, and the different military situations in Osgiliath and Ithilien. Episode Timeline 1:00 Where did he get a palantír anyway? 1:20 Fëanor. Kind of the worst IMHO. 1:45 Elendil took 3 palantíri to the north kingdom. One is with Círdan in the Grey Havens, one at 2:25 Amon Sûl (Weathertop), one at Annûminias (capital of the north kingdom). Isildur and Anárion each had 2. One at Minas Ithil (Minas Morgul), one at Osgiliath, one at Orthanc, and one at Minas Anor (Minas Tirith). 3:11 Wormtongue throws one at Gandalf. 3:35 Pippin and Aragorn both look into it. 4:07 Effort of will. - How palantír work. 4:19 Belle’s mirror 4:48 Point your palantír in the direction you want to look! 5:20 Palantír stuff is in Unfinished Tales. 5:45 Mental effort to focus: UT p 403 6:13 Light-related stuff with Fëanor. 6:30 Stewards mostly didn’t use it. 6:44 Sauron used his powers of fear and domination to pull the gaze of the other palantír. 7:09 Sauron turned Saruman through a palantír, but not Denethor. Saruman wasn’t being controlled by Sauron, but he wasn’t very helpful. 7:50 Saruman was trying to play both sides and failed. 8:15 Denethor could use his palantír by right, but it wasn’t a very good idea. 8:28 Technically, they all belong to Aragorn, but the stewards held power in place of the kings so the right to use it belonged to Denethor as well. 9:28 Some of the people of Minas Tirith were Nûmenórian, but not all Gondorians are. The line of Eӓrendil is part elvish, but not all Nûmenórians were descendants of Eӓrendil. 10:17 Denethor was using the palantír to get the information he needed to fight the war. 10:44 He continued to use it even though it was a huge mental strain and aged him prematurely. 11:05 Sauron was drawing palantír to him but Denethor could turn it away. That’s a huge deal. 11:20 Denethor was taking really big risks because he needed the information. This was the only way to do it, even though he knew it could destroy him. 11:30 Dan talks a little about how military intelligence works. Tolkien would have known about that and it was a subtle and interesting way to use that knowledge in the book. 13:20 Scene of Denethor eating is SO AWFUL and UNCOMFORTABLE. It’s supposed to be. 14:10 Shoutout to Billy Boyd. Wow! 14:55 Denethor had ONE JOB! 15:28 Hey Aragorn, what have you done lately? 15:50 He was hiding up north while Denethor was risking himself using the palantír and sending his sons to die. 17:03 In Rohan (Norse) the aristocracy earned honor in battle, so they were out in the front of battle. Gondorian culture is different. 17:50 Aragorn is out in front, like at the Black Gate where he’s all later, haters! 18:57 In Osgiliath, it’s whatever fight you can make it. 19:10 Boromir is a cavalier, Faramir is a ranger. Ithilien requires stealth. 19:34 Gondor CIA? 20:00 The brief geography of Mordor/Osgiliath/Gondor. 20:57 Erica doesn’t want to get into the Kinstrife right now. Maybe another time! Larry Palant (Suffern Rotary), Disaster Response Chair for Rotary District 7210, discusses the District’s immediate and generous response to helping victims of Hurricane Sandy. Previously the Rotary District in 2005 provided quick relief to victims of Hurricane Katrina, and Mr. Palant learned from that experience. This time, with generous donations from District 7210 and neighboring Rotary districts, Mr. Palant was able to buy 47 electrical generators, extension cords, gasoline containers, and other necessary items. As with Katrina, only with great difficulty was Mr. Palant able to locate generators, eventually finding them in Chester, New York. A volunteer donated his time and tractor trailer to deliver the supplies to the affected areas in New York and New Jersey, starting with police and fire departments. Mr. Palant also describes a “Go Bag” suggested by experts that people should have ready for immediate evacuation. Much more needs to be done to help those who lost everything. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
Suffern Rotarian Larry Palant, Disaster Response Chair and ShelterBox Representative for Rotary District 7210, discusses how he came to be a ShelterBox Representative as a result of helping provide relief for Hurricane Katrina victims. He describes what each Box contains that help people survive disasters. Founded by Tom Henderson, a Rotarian and former Royal Navy search and rescue diver, ShelterBox has provided relief across the globe since 2000. Mr. Henderson realized that the most needed aid after most disasters was for food, medicine, and shelter. He developed ShelterBox, a package containing these necessities that would last for at least six months for up to ten persons per box. The boxes are prepacked and can be delivered immediately, usually with the help of Rotary clubs near the site of the disaster. Mr. Palant identifies the most recent locations supplied with ShelterBoxes at the time of his interview–Japan after a tsunami, Arkansas after a tornado, and Columbia after mudslide --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
ShelterBoxes is a UK-based disaster relief organization supported by Rotary clubs around the world. In Rotary District 7210 Suffern Rotarian Larry Palant is ShelterBox Coordinator and Disaster Relief Chair. For this interview, Mr. Palant details how the ShelterBoxes function. Each box is filled with critical necessities for keeping at least 10 victims of disasters alive for a minimum of six months. The usual contents include a 10-person tent, sleeping mats, mosquito netting, a stove and cooking implements, emergency water purification supplies, and hand tools, but tot total weighs only about 110 lbs. A Disaster Relief Team comprised of highly skilled specialists accompanies the Boxes until they reach their destination. Each ShelterBox is often able to utilize the international communications network of local Rotary clubs to bypass red tape that can hinder effective emergency response. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support

Ronald A. Wilford, once classical music's biggest power broker, died on June 13 at age 87. Wilford was an artist manager of the old school, wielding major control over the business but keeping a very low profile. In 50 years at Columbia Artists Management, Inc. (CAMI), he was the power behind the thrones occupied by James Levine, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa and Herbert von Karajan, among other conductors. With his legendary client roster, Wilford was able to call the shots and secure bookings for lesser-known artists in exchange for one of his A-listers. But the classical music business has changed dramatically since Ronald Wilford's glory days – and so has the role of the artist manager. This week's episode looks at Wilford's legacy and the future of artist management with Bill Palant, the founder and managing director of Étude Arts, a new artist management agency; until last month he was a vice president at IMG Artists. Also joining us is David Middleton, a managing partner at Alliance Artist Management, and a onetime employee of Ronald Wilford's CAMI. "Mr. Wilford had the benefit of being in a position to shape and drive programming globally," said Palant, by essentially forcing orchestras to take the soloists his conductors wanted. But that style of deal-making has become far less routine. "It's no longer a quid pro quo where you say to the orchestra 'my conductor is coming and he or she wants this quartet for a Beethoven Ninth Symphony.'" Middleton agrees, noting, "In my days at CAMI, there was a sense of heavy-handedness, and that control wasn't felt so well in the industry, particularly on the presenting side." The management business may still exercise some hard-nosed tactics, but Palant and Middleton say that stealing other firms’ clients is a no-no. "In my experience, there is a respect for each other where we try not to poach artists if at all possible, particularly if it's from a manager that we respect," said Palant. But if a major artist approaches another manager, wanting to jump ship, "then it's fair play.” Listen to our guests' comments on the future of artist management at the top of this page and share your reactions below.
