Legolas is at a loss for words after visiting Aglarond with Gimli; Alan is at a loss for words after… well, never, really. Join The Man of the West and The Sage of the South as The Fellowship of the Ring head out on their farewell tour in our second of three episodes on Many Partings. Treebeard speaks his mind about orcs, gives excuses about Saruman, and offers Merry & Pippin just one more drink. Our simple minds speculate about poetry, revisit Gimli's rizz, and wonder if Thranduil and Treebeard went to the same school for jailers. Also, one man's treasure is our confusion.

Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Oriana's choice of topic: Legolas Greenleaf. Not originally planned as a member of the Fellowship – the honor was going to go to Glorfindel, who helps Aragorn and the hobbits evade the Nazgûl en route to Rivendell – Legolas ended up as a classic retcon character, introduced as the son of Thranduil, the Elvenking featured in The Hobbit, even though no such character was ever mentioned or described in that book. A brilliant archer who makes light of burdens, literally can walk on snow and isn't above teasing his suffering companions – but someone who can react badly if his own privilege is ever questioned – he's at once fascinating and more than a little infuriating, though his unique relationship with Gimli is one of The Lord of the Rings's more intriguing subplots. What kind of universality can be read into the character as maybe representing what Elves are like – or is he simply his own individual self? How does he come across to the hobbits, who are the ones ‘telling' the story in Tolkien's own construction of it, and is he truly relatable to them at all? What does his profound change of mood when he nears the sea say about Tolkien's deeper conception of not only Elves but how they considered time? And just what do we think of Orlando Bloom's performance of the character in the Peter Jackson films? (And separately: did we have thoughts on various The Rings of Power trailers? Oh did we ever.)SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. If you're a fictional parent who wins this award, you should feel incredibly highly honoured indeed. If you are a crap parent, then maybe you can join Thranduil (racist party dad) over in the Bad Dad Club. You can find the show notes on the website. This episode was recorded on 31 July 2021. Thanks for listening! You can find out more about this podcast at www.marginaliapod.com. If you have any thoughts, questions, or general feedback, let us know at hello@marginaliapod.com
When someone says “elf,” what do you think of? If you didn't answer, “a toymaker bearing the white hand of Saruman” or “an orc in jingly shoes,” you need this episode in your life. Join us as we discuss such hard hitting questions as: Is Santa a sexy high elf? Is the Naughty and Nice list an unbreakable fae contract? Are Rhys and Tamlin really any different from Legolas or Thranduil? Tolkien, Santa Claus, and Sarah J Maas square off in this semi-useless, mostly coherent collective rant about unpaid labor, sexy bat wings, and writing mythological beings. Happy Holidays!
Being the one hundred and twenty-first episode of the show in which there's swearing in Middle Earth, there are technically five armies, I guess, and Peter Jackson has definitely written in depth Thranduil fanfiction. Look closely: Show Transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. Back in episode 116, we talked about some amazing hoofed animals. This week we’re going to look at some more amazing hoofed animals that you may have never heard about. Some are extinct but some are running around out there looking awesome even as we speak! Thanks to Page, Elaine, Pranav, Richard E., Richard from NC, and Llewelly for their suggestions! If you’re a Patreon subscriber you may recognize part of the end of the episode as largely from a Patreon episode, by the way. Let’s start with an extinct deer with amazing antlers. Llewelly suggested it, or more accurately replied to a Twitter conversation mentioning it. That counts as a suggestion. It’s been a while but I think the conversation was about the Hobbit movies. Eucladoceros was a deer the size of a moose but with much weirder antlers. We’re not talking about the Megaloceros, often called the Irish elk, although it was distantly related. Eucladoceros’s antlers were much different. They branched up and out but were spiky like an ordinary deer’s antlers instead of palmate like a moose’s or Megaloceros’s antlers. But they were seriously big, with up to twelve points each and over five and a half feet across, or 1.7 meters. The deer itself stood just under 6 feet tall at the shoulder, or 1.8 meters. It’s often called the bush-antlered deer because the antler’s many points look like the branches of a bush. Eucladoceros lived in Eurasia but we’re not completely sure when it went extinct or why. We don’t really know that much about it at all, in fact, which is surprising because it was such a big animal. It was one of the earliest deer with branching antlers and it probably went extinct before humans encountered it, but we don’t know that for sure either. Another deer relation is a gigantic animal called the stag moose that lived at the very end of the Pleistocene, or ice age, until around 13,000 years ago. It probably looked a lot like a huge, muscular deer more than a moose, but had moose-like antlers that grew up to 6 1/2 feet across, or 2 meters. The animal itself stood almost six feet tall at the shoulder, or 1.8 m, which is about the size of the modern moose. It lived in northern North America until melting glaciers allowed other animals to migrate into the area, and the modern moose outcompeted its cousin. Early deer and deer relations looked a lot different from the deer we’re familiar with today. For instance, Hoplitomeryx. It was a ruminant and therefore related to modern deer, but while it probably looked a lot like a deer, it didn’t have antlers. It had horns. Antlers grow every year from the skull and the animal sheds them later, usually after breeding season. Horns are permanent, usually made of a bony core with a keratin sheath over it. Hoplitomeryx lived around 11 to 5 million years ago in ...

Join us once again as we welcome guest listeners to the common-room for our eleventh unscripted Q&A episode! Looks like Elves are back on the menu (that came out way weirder than we meant it to) as we answer live questions about Galadriel, the fading of the Eldar, and whether Elrond has Thranduil on his speed dial. Also, Alan and Shawn read favorite passages from The Lord of the Rings to shine a light of hope through the darkness, and go deep into the dictionary and Tolkien’s works to discover the difference between and “oath” and a “vow”.
Albert sides with Xenu, again. Stan feels that the release of the Snyder cut of Justice League fulfills Biblical prophecy. Sandra cheats on the SubMariner with Thranduil. They then proceed to have a discussion about the genitalia of the Flash's Rogue Gallery. All this and God with a capital "G" shows up in DC continuity. This is not the religious experience you are looking for.

In this episode, we talk about what Gandalf and his knowledge of the One Ring. Why doesn’t Gandalf know right away that Bilbo has Sauron’s ring? How did he figure it out? How did the ring get to a place where Gollum could find it? We talk about the dwarven rings, the One Ring’s effects on mortals, the Council of Elrond, the public library system of Gondor, and what would happen if Gandalf put on the One Ring while wearing the elvish ring that he already has. Short answer: it would be bad. In other news, Dan makes fun of Peter Jackson. 1:05 - Bilbo finding the ring - Riddle party! 3:35 - How does Gandalf not know it’s the One? 4:48 - Dwarf boats are barrels 5:12 - Back to Gandalf not knowing if it’s the One ring or not... 5:30 - Rings granting invisibility 5:43 - Greater/lesser rings 6:00 - I said Eregon. I meant Eregion. Those are different things. I blame the rye. -Erica 6:35 - How did the ring get here? 7:09 - Isildur’s bane 7:54 - Hobbit susceptibility to rings 8:07 - Dwarf rings 8:20 - I said that Sauron didn’t know about the 3 elven rings. He actually knows about all of them, but he doesn’t know where they are. The people that have the elf rings can use them, but the more dramatic the use, the more noticeable they make themselves. When the fellowship is crossing Caradhras, Gandalf uses the power of his ring to start a fire. He mentions that everyone knows exactly where he is when he does it. - Erica 8:40 - Back to the Dwarves - Gold! Madness! 9:00 - Dan is making fun of Peter Jackson. 10:00 - Thorin’s family, gold sickness, and the dwarf rings 10:53 - Why does Sauron want the dwarf rings? 11:15 - Dain putting the Mouth of Sauron on hold / Council of Elrond 12:15 - The fireplace at Bag End 12:30 - Effects of rings on mortals 12:51 - One ring is for enslaving others - Bilbo wants to live in peace and plant potatoes and dream #Moomin 13:10 - #notallhobbits 13:42 - Erica fangirls over Sam very briefly 14:20 - Sauron and Gollum 15:50 - Aragorn found Gollum in the Dead Marshes and was working with Gandalf 16:00 - Gollum did some bad stuff in Mirkwood, ended up prison breaking out of Thranduil's dungeon. Bilbo was able to escape from Thranduil with a baker’s dozen of dwarves in barrels and Gollum was able to get away because they let him out to climb trees. I don’t think he’s really that keen on keeping people prisoner… 17:00 - Gollum is why Legolas is at the Council of Elrond 17:20 - The gap between the party and Frodo leaving for Rivendell is 17 years 17:58 - Gandalf at Bilbo’s party - Great rings extending life (one book into three movies) 19:45 - Gandalf’s research in Minas Tirith - Erica looks at the actual book to confirm. - Isildur and the fire letters. #research #soproud 21:15 - Keep it secret, keep it safe, y’all! 21:44 - Gandalf and the big bucket of NOPE! 22:44 - Why did Gandalf know to go to minas tirith? - Minas Tirith is smart and funds their public library system to maintain the Isildur Archives #primarysources 23:25 - Frodo leaving the Shire (If Gandalf isn’t back by this time = September) - Nazgûl word problems - Saruman doesn’t care 25:37 - What if Gandalf put on the ring to be sure it’s the One? Is it like like drinking the clear liquid in the chemistry Lab? What you thought was H2O was H2SO4! 26:50 - Gandalf touches the ring in the book, but not in the movies. Artistic license! 27:37 - Sauron’s involvement in ring making 27:54 - I said Eregon again. Still meant Eregion. Erica is facepalming so hard. 28:48 - Rings and invisibility again, who turns invisible and who doesn’t? 30:40 - Sam also turned invisible 31:04 - Sauron can’t change shape because of the fall of Númenor. 31:34 - Shadow of Mordor, when Sauron is Celebrimbor’s ring coach, he looks like an elf lord (Annatar, Lord of Gifts) because it’s before the fall of Númenor 32:28 - The short version of the fall of Númenor.
