Learning about prayer together, by participating in prayer daily! We will also have special guests and episodes about growing and learning about our faith in Jesus Christ.
Hey, y'all! The first year a student attends college or university (or one's "freshman year" as we say in America) is important for a myriad of reasons. It is also extremely vital for one's faith in Christ. Today, we are joined by three freshmen who've just completed their first semester at college: Leah Austin, Anna Mathis, and Carter Gaul. We talk about the tremendous experiences with God in their first semester and also places where they have struggled, doubted, and are asking new questions in their faith. It is wonderful conversation that I hope you can share with other students in your life . . . especially those preparing for college soon!We begin with an introduction (00:41), a prayer (04:17), our lunch menu (04:51), Leah Austin, Anna Mathis, and Carter Gaul (07:26 ), their stories of faith in Christ (08:58 ), how college helped them discover new and exciting things in their life with Christ (11:08), the biggest difference in their spiritual lives now they are in college (14:43), how college has hurt, challenged, or complicated their faith (18:07), ways the Church could have done better at preparing them for a life of faith in college (24:55), things the Church did right in preparing them for faith in college (27:38), have they found a congregation (32:57), what is different about coming back to their home congregation (36:27), advice for other college and high school students about faith in college (39:01), a final prayer (43:05), thank you (44:40), and a blessing (44:55).Menu for the evenings snack with Leah, Anna, and Carter:Parisian/French Hot Chocolate from The French Cooking Academy with Kate and Stephane Further Reading:"Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids" by Kara E. Hey y'all, I told y'all I would be letting y'all know about some exciting personal news and why that caused this Season (Season 6 of the Pastor Brian Podcast) to be delayed. I've written the Board of Ordained Ministry of the Indiana Annual Conference and General Superintendent Trimble, and spoken with my District Superintendents in Indiana and here in Northern Illinois— and (in compliance with ¶353.1 and ¶353.2a of The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church 2016) I'm prayerfully requesting a Voluntary Leave of Absence for Personal Leave to begin in the new appointment year of July 2023 . . . . . . As the Jones family we will still be at Gary, we are not leaving. This is where God has called us and where we can live out our call to proclaim the gospel so other's may know Christ's salvation. It is our family's Church home and we love it here and most of all we love God— the one who we have completely trusted and led us here. In many ways it will be much like it was when we first came to Gary Church in 2010, we will attend, but I will be on pastoral leave and have no pastoral duties, except now, I won't have four little ones running around, they are big, but still running around in Gary Youth! I am not giving up my orders or being a pastor. Simply, pastoring will not be my regular 9 to 5 job . . . just like many of you in your walk with Christ Jesus. I will continue my podcast ministry (producing the Gary Church Podcast and the Pastor Brian Podcast) as I feel that is something God has laid upon my heart continue and enlarge. So no worries, no more interruptions or delays with this season of Pastor Brian Podcast. I'm looking forward to what the future holds here! Most of all, I hope to live out the simple truth that God's call of making disciples of Jesus Christ is constant, but it does not always look the same. I want to show that to my children, to you, and live it out with you as well. Thank you . . . you are loved by me!The music you hear is "We're On Our Way" by Purple Planet Music and licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.

Hey y'all! I know the new season has been late, but that has been because of some exciting circumstances in life that I can't wait to tell you about! However, as a preview into this coming season of Pastor Brian Podcast, here is a small sound morsel of me singing a favorite hymn of rural Indiana Methodists for this, All Saints Day . . . “Are You Washed in the Blood?” (Revelation 7:9-17, Revelation 21 & 22). It is my best audio recreation of what it felt like to sing that hymn in church on All Saints Day . . . enjoy . . . and blessings!
Hey, y'all! This is Pastor Brian at the Pastor Brian Podcast, just letting you know a little about the end of Season 5 and the beginning of Season 6. I had always intended to end Season 5 of the Pastor Brian Podcast with the Easter episode. However, in a truly bone-head move, I didn't mention that at the end of the episode (but in the crazy ramp up from the end of Lent to the beginning of Easter I somehow, in mind, thought I did). Thus, many folks, very politely, through email and in-person, asked when the next episode was coming out . . . and I realized I never actually mentioned that at the end of the Easter episode! Again, so sorry if you have been listening and thought maybe I quit the podcast game or accidently died. No, all is well, we are just taking a break to refocus and book new guests for next Season . . . which will be Season 6!Thus, I wanted to share what the Season format will look like for the Pastor Brian Podcast! The new 6th Season of Pastor Brian Podcast (which consists of a monthly interview of lay people and clergy doing amazing but often unseen ministry) will begin in September 2022 and go through Easter 2023 in April. Then we will take four months off (just like this summer). I have so many exciting ministries I want to share with you . . . this Sixth Season is going to be fantastic! I can't wait until September . . . and I will look forward to praying with ya!!!The music you hear is "Sunnyside" by Ketsa and licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.

Welcome to Episode 2 of Season 5! Today we speak with Rev. Dr. Chris L. Pierson, Senior Pastor of Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton, IL. This summer was the 5th Anniversary of Pastor Chris beginning his pastorate in Wheaton. Today we focus on one particular day: his second Sunday and sermon at Gary Church on Sunday, July 10th, 2016. Even though Pastor Chris had served in various pastorates on the southside of Chicago, cross-racial appointments in Aurora, IL and Roselle, IL, and as Director of Connectional Ministries for the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church for 15 years (right before his appointment to Wheaton) . . . this Sunday was unique. He was a black man coming to pastor in the predominantly white, wealthy, and western Chicago suburbs. The circumstances of his starting ministry in Wheaton different, but so were the 7 days leading up to that Sunday. It was a horrible week of bloodshed, death, and hard questions about systemic racism, policing, and revenge. And into all of that hurt and pain, Pastor Chris stepped into the pulpit to preach the gospel to a new congregation. Dr. Tracy Malone (09:45), the racial context of that time and the events of violence leading up to Sunday, July 10th, 2016 (14:09), his picking of scripture and gospel theme for his sermon (22:05), his personal experience of racism, violence, and the police (27:59), advice for young preachers in times of conflict, mourning, and injustice (36:26), Pastor Chris prays for the Church (39:45), final thanks and blessing (41:49).And finally, the menu for our lunch:Braised Chicken with Mustard and HerbsSteamed Jasmine RiceSkillet-Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Lemon and Pecorino Romano

Hey y'all! We hope you are having a fantastic, healthy, and blessed summer! We just wanted to give you a small update on the Podcast. Pastor Brian Podcast Season 5 IS coming . . . just a little later than anticipated. There are a couple reasons: 1) We are waiting on a few important and new pieces of equipment to be delivered to improve Season Five. 2) The reason why we need new equipment, and this is the big reveal, we are changing the format for the Pastor Brian Podcast! As we prayed about the future and heard from folks, a daily or weekly 10 minute prayer did not seem to be where there was the most need. Instead, we will have a monthly conversation with guests. Not only will it feature theologians, scholars, pastors, and writers who help others in Christ, but half of our conversations will be devoted to everyday Christians. The old Church term used is "Laity." These are people who are so often overlooked, but do most of the ministry of Christ's mission on earth. We hope to highlight these amazing people! I promise you will be inspired, encouraged, caused to think and question, and called to deeper faithfulness in Jesus Christ. But don't worry, we will still pray in every episode, just in a new way. So come on in, join us for Season 5 in few weeks! And as always . . . I will look forward to praying with you!“Pray" by Makaih Beats is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0). Welcome to our Last Drive-In Communion of the year at Gary Church! This is a Supplemental Episode made for the Gary Church congregation taking Holy Communion . . . from our vehicles in the parking lot! The sacraments are a gift God gave to empower us by the Holy Spirit to faithfully live as disciples of Jesus Christ. We made this podcast so folks can still hear the words and prayers of Holy Communion as they are being said at the same time as Pastor Brian and Pastor Chris in the parking lot, even though we are in separate vehicles. If you are not a part of Gary Church you are still welcome to listen to the prayers . . . they are scriptural and powerful. However, as you know, this does not make any bread or juice/wine around you at the time you listen to this the sacrament . . . that’s not how it works! Yet, we would love to partake in this Holy Meal with you if you are ever in Wheaton, IL on a Sunday."Fly" by Makaih Beats is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0). Merry 12th and Last Day of Christmas! First of all, I want to thank you, our listeners, for taking time with you and your family to read scripture and pray to our Savior Jesus Christ together with us during these Advent and Christmas seasons! Also, a special welcome and thank you to our many new subscribers and listeners who joined us during this special time. We are so glad you found us and look forward to being with you as you continue to grow in prayer along with us! If you could rate and review us wherever you listen to us (Apple Podcast, Spotify, Sticher, Deezer, etc) . . . that would really help! Additionally, I want to extend a profound thank you to the Adult Education Committee at Gary Church (www.garychurch.org) . It was their fantastic idea to use this podcast as a way to follow the different Birth Narratives of Jesus in scriptures throughout Advent and Christmas. They, along with Pastor Carey Willimas Bebar, worked so hard at not only finding wonderful readers, but participating themselves. Thank y’all so much!!! I wanted to take a moment to talk about Pastor Brian Podcast. As you know, since Holy Week of this last year (2020) and the beginning of the pandemic we have made a unique prayer podcast every weekday. It has been a joy and absolute privilege to journey with you through prayer, especially during these trying times. However, even as the release of the vaccine has brought a dawn to this dark pandemic, the pastoral needs in our community and congregation have never been higher in all my years of ministry . . . and they continue to multiply. People are facing real difficult and challenging decisions and crisis. Also, many have been reaching out to God in ways they never have before. As I have been praying about this I feel the Holy Spirit is moving me to spend all of my extra time in addressing these growing needs and opportunities to share Christ’s saving love. Thus, I will be making some changes to Pastor Brian Podcast. Don't worry . . . we are not going anywhere!!! Yet, there will be some tweaks to the format. Next Monday we will start Season 4 of the Pastor Brian Podcast. Beginning with this coming season, we will be coming to you weekly, on Mondays. The podcast will be designed so you can use it every day. Although, there will not be a unique podcast every day, this podcast can be used over and over again throughout the week to help you pray. And hopefully, in the near future, there will be some really exciting new directions the Podcast will go. I can’t tell you too much now, since we are still working on the details . . . but we think you will be really excited and pleased! So stay tuned to this podcast feed! Needless to say, this podcast has been a gift to me in these last nine months. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! The kind notes, emails, prayers, the encouragement, as well as our growth in reaching new listeners and subscribers all for God’s glory, has been a delight! I am looking forward to continuing to journey with you in prayer and I can’t wait to experience the ways we will grow together in Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior. Therefore, I will see you next week for Season 4 of the Pastor Brian Podcast . . . and I’ll look forward to praying with you! “Christmas Wonder" by Purple Planet Music at https://www.purple-planet.com.
